I don't think any of these you tube GP's have ever played live through a real PA. If you ran that thin on stage you would take the heads off the people 20 feet away.

      @Mike Jelinek 100%!
I've been playing with my band live for a while now and no and I use 1X12 Marshall DSL20 Combo amp and it's more than enough when Micd up. Stage noise is just annoying and throws off your sense of how your instruments sits in the mix
4x12 stacks are a thing of the past now, You could play a stadium with a 1x12 tube amp combo !

Love this amp, but not without pedals, i put a digitech main squeeze compressor with the tone completely down while turning up the hi's up on a sonic maximizer through the fx loop, takes out the sizzle and makes it really punchy, drive the front with a bad monkey....does a decent rammstein/static x tone

As a follow up to my review below I bought a DSL20H and have kept the DSL15H I have.
Short and Sweet comparison between both.
DSL 15H has much better cleans with a fullness, depth and clarity that the DSL 20H just cannot provide...quite a lot of difference!
The 20H clean is goodish..but not in the same league.
When it comes to the gain channel..the 20H is more like a OD1 for sure and has been smoothed out compared to the 15H.
But if you put in that magic ECC823 tube on the 15H..its my preference.
Overall the 20H is a nice Marshall..but the 15H definitely has a better clean and a gain channel with that $20 tube mod.
Lastly..the 15H has a lot more Girth and Bass in the bottom end at low or medium volume in either channel.(like a loudness button?)
If I had to choose between one..the 15H is the better sounding of the 2.
Fantastic Review.. and really made me decide if I wanted one of these to replace my DSL15H
The new DSL 20h has a lot of great inclusions and features which is great for those looking for a Marshall tube amp at a good price.
For those of you who might own a DSL15H..a handy hint...put in a JJ ECC823 tube on the V1 and all that gain is tamed and it makes it warm as honey and a gain more like a OD1.
Before I could not get past 9 o'clock on the gain dial but comfortably now sit at around 11-12.
I could not believe that one tube could change a amp so quite markedly.

Great review..I found this today..not knowing which cab you used I found 8 Ohms seems less fizzy or 2 x 16 Ohm ( 21x12 cabs) ideal..I take treble and mid also presence way done..then it sounds fantastic...a Lp and a DSL..dream combi

I know I love my DSL 20 HR, and was not disappointed. I put EHX 12ax7's in it, and the sound got better. I used it live once so far, and it stood out. I was proud to rock a Marshall, when the other band's guitarists had snooty boutique amps, that couldn't get with mine at all, on every level!! Here's my demo vid ruclips.net/video/FTNLqClynPI/видео.html And here's the live clip: ruclips.net/video/_SEnibPBYqE/видео.html

  • @metalinsights9664

A quick tip for DSL20HR owners. This amp definitely needs a boost, preferably one with a mid focus, such as the TS9. Or, if you do not need the loop and the separate Resonance control, just get the DSL15H, which already sounds like a mid-boosted Marshall. I have both and have done the comparison, using the same guitar, settings, cab, speaker, mic placement, etc., and found that when the DSL20HR is boosted, it sounds almost identical to the DSL15. Without the boost, the DSL20HR sounds a bit too scooped and tubby to be useful for home recording.

Hey Jay, excellent review. I have a DSL 15c and it sucks. The ultra gain channel is a hissy-pissy mess. The classic gain channel doesn't have enough balls to play with a drummer. Do you think this 20HR amp is the improvement amp they should have made in the first place? I'd love to replace the 15c with with 20HR if there was a noticeable improvement. I love checking out your evaluations because you have excellent sound and visuals. Some guys use the camera mic on their point and shoot and I can never really tell whats going on. So.....I hope you get a chance to read this note. I hope to hear your opinions.

I am a huge Marshall fan and hated to send it back but had no choice. I was hoping it would sound as good as my Haze and it had some features my Haze doesn't have. Good video here but we can't really know the true sound until we try an amp out in real life.

Like... when I hook up to an amp IRL, I know exactly what I’m looking for and how to get there. If these people think it’s smart to turn the gain up to the point of fizz, they’re missing probably the most essential skill for electric guitar. No high-gain amp sounds good with the dirt dimed. Find the damn sweet spot and buy a tubescreamer, nerds
