    I just got it yesterday. It is such a satisfying amp. I play a mix of indie, rock & metal and it does it all. It's so easy to dial in and I can't stop playing my guitar as a result. It's all I do anymore.

    I went for the DSL20 combo and with the ad talk about it being only 20W and fitted with a Celestion seventy 80, made it perfect for home playing, don’t believe a word of it if you want to hear gain then you’ll need to soundproof your room.

    I have this DSL20hr and the matching slant cab. I run it thru a Bugera power soak and crank it up on the full 20 watt mode. Huge Marshall sound at low volume. Reverb is pretty weak however, but still sufficient.
    And it looks great too. Makes me happy just having it in the room.
    For a combo I’d get the Dsl40cr. They’ve been out long enuf to find good deals on them used too.

  •  9 месяцев назад +1

    I have a DSL20CR combo and I'm very happy with it. Just changed the speaker to Celestion G12H 70th anniversary and preamp tubes, the amp just came alive! Mainly using the green channel for edge of breakup clean tone and pedals to get overdrive and distortion. It is a very versatile and budget-friendly amp, loud too!
    My settings are in the green channel -> Gain 6 Volume 4 Treble 3 Middle 10 Bass 4 Presence 4 Resonance 1. If you want to crank it to get plexi-style distortion sounds with tight bottom end, turn off the resonance. It just makes the bottom end wobblier and looser.

    I have the dsl20, the evh 5150-3 lbxs, and the friedman runt 20. I think the dsl isn't just a good amp for the price, its one of the best sounding 20 watt amps on the market. The price is just a bonus. I keep buying other 20 watt amps and I always end up being disappointed and going back to the dsl20.

      Nice, how does the Marshall compare to the Friedman?

    • @countzero5150
      @countzero5150 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@patdalymusic what I'm noticing about most of the amps like the friedman that use el84s and 6v6s is that they can't really get away from that small amp sound. The friedman sounds really good but it doesn't have nearly as much gain as the marshall and it runs out of headroom fast. It's loud but it's a small amp and it sounds like a small amp. Sort of mid range heavy and box-ey, if that makes sense. It also has a strange effects loop that almost sounds like a parallel loop that as the volume goes up, the mix goes from dry to wet.
      The dsl20 has a lot more gain on tap and it never really runs out of headroom but if the volume gets up any further than 8 it does get really compressed. It's more of a modern marshall kind of sound to the friedmans more vintage marshall. It also doesn't have that small amp boxy sound that both the friedman and the evh have. I think moving all of their 20 watt amps to big boy el34 tubes was the best thing that marshall has done in over a decade. It's a small amp that sounds like a big amp.
      To summarize, I use the friedman occasionally, I use the marshall every day.

    • @patdalymusic
      @patdalymusic 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@countzero5150 It sounds like I need to try the DSL20. I've been really curious about it ever since playing a Strat through the DSL40. It sounded really surprisingly good. It's funny that the Marshall sounds more modern than the Friedman. I think you might be on to something with the tubes. Using larger/higher output power tubes with lower wattage amps seems to be a good combo. My guess is that it helps a lot with the low end punch. Thanks for your thorough response. Sometimes a stranger on the internet is way more helpful than you expect!

    I've heard good things about this amp, as well as the Origin. I'm surprised how little this costs, considering how great everyone says it sounds over the Origin series. I was looking into both of them, as well as the Bugera infinium 22 watt head. Now, I'm leaning towards the Quilter SuperBlock UK 25 watt. For the money and my purposes, it will probably be the best option.

    You ain’t playing a Dsl20 in an apartment without being evicted. This is not a bedroom amp. To get the amp to actually open up and fill out the volume is gonna be louder than really practical for a bedroom/couch amp. With an attenuator maybe, but by then it’s not exactly a sub 1000 dollar amp. It’s a great amp but don’t get it twisted 20watts and even halved is plenty enough to piss off your neighbors and anoy the wife. I think people think this as an amp you can gig with and use it at home. Yeah you can gig with it, but I don’t think it’s practical for most for around the house. Sorry I love my DSL20cr but it’s loud enough I can only play it when I got the house to myself. The headphone out sounds terrible in my opinion, but some people swear they use it. However the Dsl20 is one of the few “lunchbox”
    Amps that have big bottles in it and that makes a big difference it makes el84 boogies sound like toys side by side for high gain stuff at least. I think it’s the best 20 watt tube amp around for the sound and value especially since I got mine a couple years ago when they were even cheaper. I just disagree that it’s a good “practice “ amp for most it’s way too much volume for around the house.

    Love your guitar reviews, glad to see a demo of this head i am contemplating. unfortunately, while it can be very good for a very high gain, i am sadened to find out that it actually lacks the Marshall crunch...it has no a kind of OD mode, but its instantly in Distortion, so even if in lower gain, to me, its more like a lower gain distortion instead of reduced overdrive. Its weird, even MG and Valvestates all have a kind of Marshall crunch, its a must, yet this amp is lacking that

    So -- serious question here. I'm a relative newb when it comes to guitars. Only been playing for about 16 months -- I don't even own an electric guitar (yet). Why would you want a distortion pedal? I mean, with an amp like this, use the Ultra Gain channel (or heck, even that Classic Gain channel can be pretty distorted) crank the hell out of the pre-amp, and you get all the distortion you need, no? I'm just not seeing the need for a distortion pedal at all, with an amp like this. But maybe there's a use-case I'm unaware of?
    I've been looking at the DSL20CR... Really leaning towards that one, especially since you can find 'em on sale for about $750 nowadays. That's a hell of a deal. Combine that with maybe a PRS SE Custom 24, and you can have a hell of a good beginner electric-guitar setup for about $1500 -- definitely under $2K even with shipping and tax. That really seems like a good start to me...

    • @PlayandTradeGuitars
      @PlayandTradeGuitars  3 месяца назад +1

      That is a great rig - this Marshall plus the PRS Se Custom 24. Great choices. This amp has built in distortion effectively, so you wouldn't necessarily need a distortion pedal as this will cover all the sounds. When you take a more traditional amp like say my Fender Deluxe Reverb, it will break up heavily on 10 but it won't get that modern distortion sound without a pedal, which you would use at a lower clean volume on the Deluxe. Tired but true - use your ears! If you can get the sounds you want, you're good! Thanks for watching and enjoy your new guitar

    Hi, I am looking for an amp for my RHCP cover band to gig with, for reversal with the band and alone at home. So the DSL20 sounds as a nice option for dirty cleans -if 20watt is enough for dirty cleans- but I wonder if the Origin20 or the mini silver jubilee would be a better option to go for? What do you think. Now I use a mustang III V2 as my swiss army knive that brings me quite far in the tones I need. Would a 20 watt tube Marshall with pedals and a 4x12 cabinet be a good upgrade?

    • @PlayandTradeGuitars
      @PlayandTradeGuitars  6 месяцев назад

      I find the DSL20 to a swiss army knife of sorts for Marshall tones, it's really versatile and sounds great. I would choose that over the Origin 20. With regard to pedals, it depends on how transparent you want the amp - Marshall never truly sounds clean like a Fender, so whether it's a good pedal platform really depends on your sound. I don't personally use anything beyond a 1x12 if bringing a cabinet, so 4x12 is probably more than necessary for this amp, but it's personal preference too. Thanks for watching!

    I have a EVH LBXII. It sounds great, but I'm wanting a cleaner tone at a louder volume. The EVH breaks up almost instantly. Does the Marshall dsl 20 break up pretty fast on the clean channel? The EVH is 15 watts, and honestly louder than I would probably ever need, so that makes me think the 20 watts would be enough, unless it gets distortion right away. So then I'd need to go to 40 watts. But the combo is 50 lbs! And I'm thinking about playing at church with seating for 300-400. (I'd love to Rock the church, 🤘😁 but I don't see that happening). After a week's honeymoon time with my new DSL20hr, I am in love. It's not a perfect amp, but for what it does, it's a little beast.
    I am running mine through an HB vertical 2x12 with V30's. It's a pretty good match for those that like V30 tone. It takes about 10 seconds to dial in a classic thrash tone with added bottom end. It has a very aggressive bottom end. No problems there.
    I will say this about volume. I have my DSL20hr sitting right next to a PRS MT15, which is also sitting on a V30 loaded 2x12. The MT15 is much louder than the DSL at the same spot on the volume knob. At 1/4 volume, the DSL20hr is almost at small gig volume. At 1/4 volume, the MT15 is stupidly painfully loud. I don't know if the DSL20hr ever gets as loud as the MT15. That little amp is a freak of nature.
