Marshall DSL20 - How Good Is Marshalls Budget Valve Amp?

  • Marshall have been kind enough to lend me a few amps to review, I thought a good idea would be to review all of their 20-watt amps. I was completely blown away with their fantastic sc20, sv20, and silver jubilee Studio Series, so I thought I would have a look at their far eastern made DSL20 Head. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    I have the DSL20 along with the DSL1, JCM 800 (20 Watt) and Silver Jubilee (20Watt) and find the DSL20 head the most useable. Very easy to get a great tone and lots of tonal options. Sounds great.

      You said the DSL20 was the most "usable". Do you actually like it more than the Silver jubilee? I am asking because I am quite interested in the Jubilee but I am having a hard time justifying the price. Please respond.

    • @79Adam
      @79Adam 2 года назад +10

      @@rosswilliam2472 its all subjective, but the DSL I've found is easier to just plug & play and you get a decent tone without too much fiddling with the controls, whereas the jubilee does sound better in my opinion, but there's a lot going on with the controls. I don't find the jubilee very intuitive and was a bit frustrating at first.. but that's just me.. I don't like too many options. If you understand how to use the jubilee to its potential I'm sure you'd prefer it (most do) but the DSL is probably better value.

    That amp, in my opinion, is the best Marshall head in the particular price range. I love the sound, and the thinness, actually, makes it easier to place the guitar tracks in the mix, without the heavy load and muddiness (depending on genre), but names alt.rock/rock/punk rock.

    Excellent, extremely helpful review. I own the combo version and absolutely love it. You're right, the volume needs to be turned up to work the power tubes, otherwise it will sound on the thin, fizzy side. This has always been the case with Marshalls. They're made to be cranked. Marshalls are not Boogies. But if I wanted a Boogie I'd buy one. I owned one before. I prefer the DSL to any Boogie. I used to own a JMP in the 80s and it had to be cranked to at least three or four to really work its magic. I would use a pedal to boost it, usually a Boss, Rat, MXR or Tube Screamer. It was all about finding the right mix where you didn't thin the sound out. What I love about the DSL is it has all the gain I'd ever need.

    You make it sound the perfect Marshall and the sounds you’ve got are fabulous, which is perfect for me. However on buying this amp I was very disappointed. It was lousy. Bottom end was loose, cleans weren’t any where near as good as the dsl 40cr, The effects loop was the worst I’d ever heard, thinning out the pedals no end. Tried this through a 2x12 Marshall cab and my favourite 1x12 orange cab with vintage 30s (which was the best of the two) but still lack lustre.
    The Marshall dsl 40cr I had had the best clean channel I’d ever heard on an amp (but not the dsl 20hr) effects loop wasn’t bad on that amp either.
    I then purchased an EVH lbx 111 stealth which was a revelation in overdrive sounds and the effects loop was awesome. The clean channel is acceptable but no where near as good as the Marshall 40cr.
    I must admit I don’t wind any of these amps up to the max as my neighbours would find it which is probably the case for most people who purchase these amps.

    Am I missing something? An EL34 tube can produce 25 watts (or more) so in the case of the DSL20HR and any other 20 watt EL34 Marshall amplifier that's a total of 50 watts, Now you can see these amps can not even get to half of the EL34s output so you can not get anything like "pushing the power tubes" or power tube distortion as it is called. The use of EL34 tubes was purely a marketing ploy so they can say it's like a "1959 blah blah blah but only 20 watts for the modern player ". If Marshall had wanted to give their customers the possibility of power tube overdrive they would have used 6V6 tubes and a circuit that allowed this possibility. Having said that I also believe the DSL20 are a great sounding amp on both channels and have some other great features. I've used one for about 8 years into a 4x12 with Celestion V30 speakers almost always on the 10 watt setting and it sounds great with P90s or humbuckers. Clean channel with overdrive pedals and the "Ultra Gain" all by itself sounds pretty darn good. Only bad thing is the dodgy (read cheap) capacitors and resistors in all of these amps that cause noise. Interesting that the Marshall reviewer didn't say why buyers should plump for the more expensive amplifiers just that they should. Weird huh?

    Still not the absolute cheapest but the DSL20HR is generally the best head to get in the line if you want enough features and don't want to spend too much or don't need the headroom of the DSL100HR or even the DSL40CR in combo form.

      Then you take large dial and set it at 12’o clock , then amp s/b around 5amps power level , then turn dial at 7-8’oclock then your at a few wattage power , then turn down Marshall amp power settings down to taste ....Walla - you turn all your knobs to 12’oclock or more where amp is pushing tubes goods and if you did it all correctly....Your tv volume will cover your playing ..

      They make cheap attenators at thomann, musicstore and probably everywhere now. And these are really good, to me, for normal domestic use, a basic attenuator is good enough : sure, it might differ a bit from the actual amp being cranked (because you don't get speakers moving the same way, for starters) but it's still really cool. I approach it more as "now i can push the amp to 3 and still sound as quiet as when i was playing it on 1" , so it's just to get a bit more juice from the amp. I then boost with an overdrive for solos and roll off the volume on the guitar for cleans, have a same-ish overall volume and the same overall tone only with more and less gain and that makes me very happy : i love not having to fiddle too much with the amp and rather focus on playing the guitar !

      Unfortunately a lot of people are snobs and feel that way. I genuinely think the DSL range is some of the best bang for the buck and especially the 40CR and 100HR which rival even the Peavey 5150/6505 which is made in China with the exception of the DSLs not having separate tone controls for the two channels. The master volume switching and having a regular volume control on top of that is brilliant. If I'm not mistaken I believe it also allows you to get that power amp saturation while keeping the overall volume relatively quiet. Code had that but it was a somewhat mediocre modeling amp with sounds that weren't amazing for the most part. Even the cheaper DSLs sound pretty good for the most part.

    Costs more than the origin series but well worth it. The origin sounds ghastly in comparison. Both are tube but the origin has serious design flaws that affect the tone. Hopefully Marshall will redesign the main boards on the origin series on future models. DC bleed, or any bleed for that matter is not acceptable and can be overcome. Even the older models overcame that exact deficit.
