I just got the 40 watt version a few days ago and it's fantastic. It'll definitely do your classic Marshall tones (I mean it's not a JCM800 with a separate 412 cab, but for well under $1000 USD it's close enough that you can't complain), but what I really love is that it'll also go very clean and sterile to function as a pretty neutral pedal platform. If you can pick one up used for a few hundred off this thing is an absolute steal.

    Johan,
Your videos are absolutely stellar and have been evolving quite nicely! I love the way you minimize the talking and maximize the clarity, by allowing us to view the positions of the guitar's controls and provides inset of the amp's current settings. Also, you makes it obvious what the current speaker configuration is, without saying a single word! your vids are the schnizzle of the shnitt! Yeah, some nit pickers and cork sniffers "could" whine about your playing, style or genre choices, but............? You give really good and broad examples of the capabilities of the gear you demonstrate!
    Thanks For Your Efforts!

Man, this amp sounds crazy good. I had an original dsl40 and sold it. This sounds like a nice upgrade. Cleans and crunch are warm with a buttery tone but snappy too. Hard to explain. The OD channel is awesome. Kind of Carvin Legacy sounding but with distinct marshall hair and a tight thumping on the palm mutes. The old DSL's got furry with too much gain, this seems not to have that issue.
Summary: I'm gonna buy one and soon.

Thanks Johan! My opinion is to spend $150 more and get the DSL40CR for two reasons: (1) the 70/80 speaker in the 20CR sounds fizzy and has no bottom end at all, and (2) the 3 different OD channels in the 40CR make it much more versatile. The 40CR also has separate reverb channels and master volumes which means it goes REALLY low for bedroom players (with two masters). I know what I'm talking about as I exchanged the 20CR for the 40CR.

CentaurusRelax314 Sure, I find the clean channel even on 40w setting is low at low volumes. The other overdrive channels are louder on the 40w setting. If you use the 20w setting, even OD2 (the channel with the most saturation) is quite low for a bedroom setting. And the nice part is that it’s ready to gig with if you ever make the jump. This sucker will get loud if you need it! :)

WOW! What a great "jack of all trades" amp. It sounds like it could go all the way from clean to blues to rock to full-on metal. One thing I love about the newer Marshall amps is how good they've been able to get their clean tones. I had once an old JCM800 that sounded like I was playing with rubber bands for strings when I had it set to clean even with the high freq eq settings cranked all the way up. Also this amp to me sounds 100% better through the 4x12 cabinet in my opinion. Then again, as more of a heavy metal guy, I love having that low end "ooomph". Overall indeed a fantastic sounding and very versatile amp. As you demonstrate, a perfect studio amp especially if someone has various cabinets to play around with. Speaking of having fun with guitar cabinets, It would be hilarious just for fun, to run it through a 1x15" PA speaker to see what happens. :) I once did a gig where my Yamaha all-tube combo amp's power section failed on me but the preamp section still worked. I ran it through an old RedBox cab sim/direct box I had in my gig bag (where I kept things like duck tape, extra batteries, flashlights, extra pics, extra cords, etc..) and into our modest Ross PA system (2 1x15" speakers) and it actually didn't sound half-bad. lol. I just wish Ross was still in business as their inexpensive PA systems and cabinets got my band through countless gigs with zero failures. When we got a better PA system later, I actually used our PA head and one of the 1x15" cabinets as a damn fine sounding bass-rig when I switched to bass guitar. I used a ART TubeMP mic preamp as a direct box (terrible mic pre but great bass direct box) for a lovely thick bass guitar sound and I was in heaven. Anyways....I degress....sorry always fun to tell little "gig stories" and about our gear. :)

Even though I own a lil tone monster of a "cheap" tube amp, it still surprises me the quality and quantity of sound and tone you can get out of some of them. These DSL's are no exception! I have a Bassbreaker 15, that comes with a Celestion V-type (vintage 30-ish?), and haven't used a dirt pedal since. I keep finding cool inspiring sounds, and it pushes enough bass to resonate the entire room, lol. And this is an open back cab!! It'll give loud, BALLSY crunch tones you'd never expect from a brand F amp- especially a 15 watt one. I guess amp makers have learned a thing or two in the decades since the old classics were introduced, lol! These new amps come with convenience features the vintage amps don't: Master volumes, effects loops; ext speaker jacks w/selectable impedence; direct outs for PA's and recording, etc. You can get those tones without blowing the walls down or destroying your hearing, lol. Best of all: they're affordable. I'd love to be able to do what you do- crank old beasts up until they flap your trouser legs, but I like where I live and don't want to have to move, lol.

It is the amp I have, and would love to see what you think about it and the settings you would use on all 4 channels. Well more thank likely you wouldn’t be on the clean channel much HAHAHA!!! Have a fantastic weekend my good Sir, and keep those videos coming!!!!

The seventy80 is definitely the weak link, but a really easy swap. I see a lot of these amps (like the Monoprice, jet city) ship with dirt cheap tubes and speakers, but they got it where it counts. And most are going to change tubes & speaker anyway, so might as well keep the cost as low as possible.

You should compare the two. And in their reduced wattage modes too. I find mine in 20 watt, lacklustre. I can dial in the same volume level in both modes and the 40 watt is the clear winner for me. They say the 20 and 40 are different inside too. I think it's the amp that's the same as the 100 watt ..maybe preamp?? Can't remember;-) Be a cool vid and you're the best qualified to do it on RUclips! ALSO..btw... My DRUMMER friend.. came to me the other day saying how much he loves this guy on YT who tests all the speakers and shit and then struggled to say your name. I had a good laugh and said yeah he's the best! Even drummers love you:-)

i wanted to thank you on recommending the DSL20, I got the combo. I was on the fence as for the smaller or that one. Anyway, both you and Phil McKnight (know your gear) said it was great and it is. What is most surprising to me is the clean channel is fantastic. I used to think of Marshall cleans as a joke, but mine sounds great. I wanted to share this with you. I find that using the DSL20 on the right clean, and any older tube amp, fender, etc. on the left, with any signal splitter, I'm getting fantastic stereo cleans. Really about the best boutique sound I've ever achieved. Try it out Johan. Have a good one, stay safe, and say hi to the water for me.

Great sound, even at low volumes. Just terribly weak reverb.

    • @shawnreese6538

@@michaelmichael5305 sorry for the late response. how'd you know, lol. the amp sounds awesome. the clean is among the best i've ever heard, which blows my mind for a marshall. the distortion is very good. it is awesome for home, and can be used for practice. for recording you want to mic it. I've tried the amp through a v30 and was shocked that the 70/80 in it sounds better. this amp is excellent for home practice, recording, and jamming. You would probably have to mic it for a bigger gig, probably more practical to go minimum 40 and up for gig use, UNLESS you were to use another amp on the left. I use this for practice and use another tube amp on the left, i most often use the amp's clean channel, with a rat pedal for both amps distortion. It's something you have to try yourself, you can't get it from words or guessing from the videos. Just put any old tube amp on the left, and this on the right. You could probably gig with that. The left is like your bass driver, and the overall tone modifier will be your right channel. That's how i do it, once you A-B it with mono you won't look back.

    • @shawnreese6538
      @shawnreese6538 3 года назад +1

@@michaelmichael5305 oh yeah, regarding the reverb, i typically use an EH oceans 11 or keeley ME-8 either way, into front or in the loop.

The Marshall DSL20CR is a Great Amp. I got the latest 2020 version and it is Amazing. Has 3 12AX7 Pre-Amp Tubes to Over-Drive + 2 EL34 Tubes in Power Section = A True Rock & Roll Amp. $600 here in U.S.A. This Amp & a Gibson Les Paul sounds so good.

In my personal opinion, for a lot of people it might be worth saving up a little extra and going for the bigger 40-watt version instead - if only for the load of extra features.
For about €150 more, you get 2 more (sub-)channels in the preamp, double master volumes (tip: set one to stage volume, one to something bedroom-friendly, switch between bedroom practice and gig-volume at the press of a button), per-channel reverb, MIDI interface, and a truckload more clean headroom.
You also get a more modern-voiced speaker and a bigger speaker enclosure, which does help with getting a better sound.

Fantastic videos, thanks! I have this amp... but on first hearing the demo, mine didn’t sound like this at all, much less dynamic and punchy! I then looked at the settings... no wonder you used the headphones! When the volume is dimed like in the demo, it comes into its own. I think the windows of my apartment would blow out playing at those volume settings however!
