Hey everyone! Drop a like on the video if you enjoyed it! Also subscribe for more film camera Thrifting videos! Got another Japan video coming in two weeks!
I just bought a Pentax Spotmatic SP from a Japanese on-line store in immaculate condition FOR OLD TIMES SAKE as it was my first camera in 1969. Hard to get film for a good price and lightmeter batteries are expensive.
Agree, I'm touring Japan atm and there's no bargains unless you count Tax Free discount as the bargain. This video is 2 years too late, there were bargains to be had up to then but no longer. What's not mentioned here is on the price tags in Japanese it states issues with the camera, hence the lower price. Don't rely on Google translate either to pick out the issues. The only pull really is there are vintage cameras in great/ unbelievable conditions but you'll pay the same as would back home on eBay. I've checked out all the usual stores in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, Maruyama, Hiroshima and Fukuoka it's the same story. There's junk bins if you want to take a chance with repairing at home but if they aren't going to fix them in Japan then you need to put that in the equation. There's bargains in buying Fujifilm stock and any HK film but Cameras no, unless you're happy with problems with the optics. Also huge selection in accessories which can pull up the odd bargain.
Camera shops in the US have all but vanished save for the big guys in NYC. Japan was the manufacturer epicenter of cameras for many years thus the plethora of availability… I remember in the mid 70’s shopping for a camera with my father at Mailman’s in York PA. They had an entire department dedicated to photography, at least forty feet of glass topped counters with more on display behind the counters. In todays world your lucky to find four feet of display space for photography… Thank you for the insightful glimpse of the Japanese marketplace.
I loved your mindset about learning when you make a mistake. We can all do better with that. Don’t just be bummed out, be excited that you learned something and hopefully, you’re now forced to go back to Japan. Super cool camera! Congratulations.
Brings back memories 😊 Bought a Sigma DP3M at Map Camera in Shinjuku. Grabbed some bloom filters and accessories and the kind staff lady went accross town to their other store to get the items. A wonderful experience only held back by the fact that I didnt have more money to spend 😅.
Just so the lesson is really learned: that top dial is meters. Please don't mistake for feet and shoot an entire roll out of focus. I wouldn't blame you, I've made stupider mistakes, but don't make that one.
Man oh man! I would LOVE to go to Japan and camera shop, not only that but see the sites. I’m heavy into JiuJitsu and would love to see it practiced in Japan. Thanks for sharing.
Man one of my big dreams is to go to Japan to go film camera shopping! I drooling hard seeing all those cameras it looked like heaven. Awesome photos can't wait for the next video.
When I was in Hiroshima in 1979, there were many small family owned camera shops where you could bargain with the shop owner on used items. Even though they were small, they could also get something special on short notice (next day or two) from Tokyo. There were so many tempting items to buy but the exchange rate wasn't that great in late in 1979.
Heading to Tokyo for the first time next year and I’ve already carved out some time for camera thrifting now that I’m getting into film. Thanks for this video! 2:17
on my first roll on the T2, I learned how easy it is to turn the exposure compensation dial as several photos came out overexposed. No lock on the dial.
I feel bad for the girl. She’s dragged along for the never ending journey just to be the conversion calculator. When she gives him the total and she’s just standing there like “can you make a decision already?”. I almost cried when I saw her yawning. I wanted to rescue her so much 😢
Glad that you found what you're looking for at Kitamura Camera, they indeed have one of the best camera collections in Japan. There is one other Kitamura Camera store in Shinjuku that is located a little bit far from other film camera stores in the videos which are close together, and I think that store has the best camera collection (bought mine there haha).
Shinjuku is def the spot for electronics, especially cameras. Did the same second-hand camera treasure hunt a few years back. Totally fun experience and lots of jems.
I've just pick up pentax spotmatic F only for 10$ last week. The camera included Super Takumar 55mm F1.8 with super clean optic. That was the best treasure i find in japan, maybe more if i explore in tokyo.
Met you once in Chinatown in sf with my boy and put him on your channel! So Happy to see you enjoyed Japan. Hope to go out there and experience it once
Tip if you do go please know what you want to purchase. Most of these shop dislike random people who just browse and loitering. Im amazed no one said anything about him talking in the shop.
Yep, and they'll hike the price just for that. These shops know what's going on, they see you coming thinking you're after a steal, it's too late that's not going to happen.
What would you say it’s a good rabbit hole to dive down thru to learn what would be a good point and shot on a small budget. Or what brands to learn about bc when it comes to point and shots I am clueless
I've got the TVS Digital. It's camera jewellery. When people see you shooting with it there's almost a disbelief that something so utterly amazing could exist....like the camera was nothing more than a rumour...
I’ll be doing some camera thrifting myself in Tokyo in November so it was nice to see some prices before going. Did you happen to spot any non gold Minolta CLEs out there?
@@KingJvpes Shiieettt.. guess I have to bring cash then! Thanks man, appreciate the videos, hope you enjoyed your trip, can't wait for the next Japan video!
Congrats on the T2. I've had two or three, and a T3 at various points, but don't have any of them now. Another T2 is at the top of my list, for 'next,' though. Great camera. Two questions, though: 1) How did you get the 'aerial, fisheye' footage @13:22? 2) Used camera stores in Japan-are prices 'hard fixed,' or are negotiations or discounts possible?
I visited these stores in Shinjuku too and the option paralysis was overwhelming. I ended up walking away with nothing because I couldn’t just afford to spend a whole day in each store looking at everything.
Crazy how much these point and shoots go for these days. In 2016, I bought a barely used Contax T2 for $350, I wanted the T3 but they were going for $800 at the time lol
Not just with cameras but with any goods/merchandise in general, a lot of merchants have a "no photography [of merch]" rule. And more often than not, it probably stemmed from a past incident by a disrespectful tourist. Watch out for the "no photography" signage, sometimes it's very small, and often it's a simple icon so easily missed.
I've found 3 contax cameras at thrift stores over the years. Original T, G1 and 139q. The zeiss lenses are my favorite! Still looking for that leica lol
Sadly the only film Fuji still produces in Japan is INSTAX. ACROS B&W is from the UK (Harman/Ilford) and the new Fuji 400 is Kodak Ultramax. The Fuji 200 is also Kodak and the 100 is from existing stock.
I've been to most of those places you've been and I would love to go back again! It's quite an experience esp the first store. Tons and Tons of Leica gear to choose from. haha
@@KingJvpes Definitely! Congrats on the T2! I've been scoping one myself! :) Also thanks for sharing all your experiences with us! Keep posting your awesome videos!

But in all seriousness, you get a thumbs up for the vibe and bravery shooting film! It's a lot of fun! I got an Olympus EEE PEN (original) and a FUJICA interchangeable lens camera. I even test shoot with their Digital cameras in their store.

Having used a tonne of point and shoot cameras, I sold them all because they just don’t compare to using a good manual focus range finders I’m lucky enough to have a leica mp, and for street, zone focusing is way faster with a much higher in focus hit rate than any auto focusing point and shoot, and for other types of photography where I get to actually take time to focus it’s always consistently as I want it. I’m a firm believer that you can’t beat a range finder for travel and street when using wide or standard lenses. They just get a bit tricky if you shoot any tele

Music too loud, very annoying when you have tinnitus! And very bad sound for speak.

There are no ‘hidden gems’ in one of the busiest urban areas in the entire world. These guys know exactly how much they can get for any model

I wasn't as crazy into cameras when I was in Tokyo (almost 20 years ago, but with my trusty Canon 350D), but into gaming. This seems similarly crazy.
Found a Canon MC in Tokyo last week, had to grab when seeing it IRL first time - couldn't find any deal but damn do they have stock over there!
Used Fujichrome 100 slide film for years. Absolute favourite.
