Bell Ringing at St Mary Magdalen, Oxford

  • Tower 3 on the Lilliputters Guild Christmas Outing took us to the opposite end of the spectrum from Christ Church, at the very light ten of “St Mary Mags” (not to be confused with Magdalen College, another ring of ten about five minutes’ walk away).
The bells were six in number until fairly recently. Like St Thos, the restoration was led by Steven Ivin; the tenor was recast in 1988, and the others in 1990. They were then augmented twice; to eight in 2000, and to ten shortly after in 2001, with Taylors the founder of choice.
They handle well and sound quite pretty, but are very light and do whiz round - getting a good speed and accurate rhythm is not always easy, especially for Royal. St Mary Mags is the home tower of the Oxford University Society - with much memorabilia on the walls to show for this - and the bells are popular and readily available for peals, quarters, and other such “extra ringing”.
The touches featured here are some Cambridge Royal, and two lots of jump call-changes (Forwards, Backwards and Queens). Jimmy and Euan also redesigned their faces here; one could argue this was an improvement!
    Tenor 7-1-12 in A.

I have seen so many of your guilds vids. I often see forwards and backwards rounds being practised and queens. But what I wonder about is why you lads never practise hips and que-hips and backwards queens. WHy is that? Que-hips sound absolutely amazing. they give me an eargasm lol

@@Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo Ah - hips! We call it "firing" down South here! To be honest, it's never occurred to us - and possibly because when not done well it sounds bloody awful (and I'm not all that keen on it when it is done well!). Nonetheless that could be an interesting one to try.... watch this space!

Lol Simon well one cannot argue taste.
But since it is part of the ringing tradition and demanding good accurate striking it might be good to do them for the sake of practising skills. I agree on the uneven hips. they are like a terrorist attack on the eardrums. And some bells just don't lend themselves very well to do them nicely and make it sound like a bunch of galvanised buckets falling down a flight of stairs.
Looking forward to hear them. especially the que (queens) hips.

Your history isn't quite right here, Simon. The old six were first made up to eight in 1973 to celebrate the OUS Centenary. All of the bells have since been recast.
