  • A couple of touches of Stedman, rung on the Swindon Branch Christmas Outing in December 2018. Another video that’s been sitting on my computer for a while, and which I have finally got round to making following a request on the Bellringers Facebook Group.
These are a pleasant little six, located on the outskirts of Oxford city. The church, with its imposing Romanesque architecture, is a magnificent building, begun in the late 1160s by the Clinton family, and which remains in substantially original condition, bar a 13th century addition to the East end. Unfortunately, these were the last tower of the day and it was dark, so I must return for a proper visit round the church - a detailed history of the building can be found here: www.britainexpress.com/counti...
The bells themselves are pleasant enough, albeit they feel slightly lost in such an impressive tower! They are a real hotchpotch of dates and founders; the oldest bell is the 4th, cast in 1592 by Joseph Carter of Reading. The last major work appears to have been done in 1911, when the bells were rehung in a new frame by Richard White of Appleton. They handle and sound reasonably, and the coloured lights in the middle of the ringing chamber gave a very festive feel to the occasion!

Very quick off the mark with your comment! Yes indeed you can - I have updated the description to reflect the Oxford City link. Although it is nicer to have video footage :-)

@@ryantrout6094 and now you know! They'd probably fit quite well in your area - I do think it's a shame such a fine building doesn't have a grander ring of bells, mind. They're pleasant enough for an old six
