  • Here we chat about Tudor watches, the history, and models. We will cover Tudor models from times of past, and also Tudor watches of current day.
    Remember, Tudor is technically owned by Rolex, which was founded by Hans Wilsdorf. While in vintage times, Tudor used parts of their associated company, Rolex, today they have positioned themselves into a very unique place in the watch community.
    Among modern watch collectors, Tudor is known for one model- the Tudor Black Bay. The Black Bay comes in many different sizes, forms, and bezel colors. There is even a Tudor Black Bay Pepsi GMT which of course is modeled after the Rolex watch- Rolex GMT Master or Rolex GMT Master II.
    Throughout history there has been a bit of a yin- yang relationship between Tudor and Rolex. For example, Rolex would have a Submariner, Tudor would have a Submariner. It follows:
    Rolex Daytona - Tudor Chronograph
    Rolex Day Date - Tudor Date Day
    Rolex Datejust - Tudor Price Date
    Rolex Alarm- wait- this did not happen- or did it? Tudor Advisor....
    The list goes on! Sports watches, dress watches, chronographs, dives watches, mens watches, ladies watches. Tudor does it all ! Tudor and Rolex, for better or worse, mostly better, share history, previously parts, and of course the creator.
    Let's ride the Tudor train while is is still boarding passengers- glad to Tudor Watches back in the USA since they came back- they were missing for many years!

    I have 11-series Rolex Batman, I bought a Tudor GMT and honestly, there are days when I wonder why I don't just wear the Tudor every day. As someone in my early 30s there are times when professionally wearing the Rolex (now that its a $15k+ watch) feels like a bit of a "flex" as they say. Getting all the functionality of my Batman in a watch with none of that Rolex snob factor, plus a lot of genuine tool-watch charm, better water resistance and really no concern about dinging or damaging a future $20k collector's piece.... yea, I just love my BB GMT.

    • @rumporridge1
      @rumporridge1 5 лет назад

      Your not gonna damage the Batman cuz. It’s built like a tank. And any dings can be polished out over the years. Rolex’s clean up quite nice at the service intervals. Can’t bring dings to the grave bro. Wear and enjoy. And flex as much as you want.

    • @ncprime9447
      @ncprime9447 5 лет назад +1

      Column Wheel Your right, aside from the flex thing. Doing contract work means a lot of my meetings are basically job interviews and don’t wanna risk looking to flush or like I’m out blinging the guy across the table. I think the main thing the BB GMT has done for me is made me realize the Pepsi is the watch I really want as a daily driver so the goal is to get that and keep the Batman as an investment piece so as close to mint as possible.

    • @rumporridge1
      @rumporridge1 5 лет назад

      Nick Prime definitely can relate. I have a 16700 GMT and treat that piece like a grail. My Sub gets some time but I always fret for banging it around. Hence I recently got a Breitling Aerospace and a Citizen Skyhawk to add to the rotation. They can take the brunt of the day job. Boy that Batman is a real nice watch brother.

      @pbarkell 5 лет назад

      You'll be fine wearing the BLNR every day; I wear mine all the time and it looks as good as new after a service. Hopefully you didn't pay $15K for it - now the BLRO in stainless is out, you can pick up the batman for around £6700 or $8,000 as demand has dropped.

    • @ncprime9447
      @ncprime9447 5 лет назад

      @@pbarkell I paid retail, no tax so I got a great deal on it. I don't quite know where you're looking but now that its discontinued the prices on the 116710BLNRs only seem to be climbing. The BLRO has always been my goal for a daily wear, I couldn't get that but the BLNR sort of fell into my lap as it were and I took it. I'd rather have the BLRO as a daily wear but hold onto the BLNR as a safe queen. Though frankly, I'm not really a fan of the safe queen concept so I may sell my Batman on to someone who WILL wear it everyday... once I get a BLRO... which may take a while.

    I'm personally happy that the black bay prices are cheaper now due to supply. Finally pulled the trigger on a blue bezel one last month, pre owned for about $3k and couldn't be happier. 5 years ago, I couldn't bring myself to buy one due to the price even though I've always loved the design

    The only Rolex that I absolutely love is the Daytona, but I’ll never be in a position to own one. But what is obtainable for me is a Tudor Black Bay Bronze! I am not a fan of bronze watches, but this doesn’t just feel like any bronze watch. It is gorgeous to me and that is definitely something I look forward to owning! Thanks John!

    Thanks for putting together this insightful video on the Tudor brand. I remember way back in the mid-sixties to the early years of the seventies, as a youngster in Hong Kong, I was fully aware of both the Rolex and Tudor brands, and that they was related to each other. Sport watches were not really the “in-thing”, seeing someone wearing a Submariner or Daytona was a very rare occurrence. As such, most Tudors that I saw were mainly the Prince no-date (manual wound), Prince Oyster Date and Prince Day-Date varieties. Tudors were fairly popular for folks who wanted to have a handsome and tough everyday watch but did not want to pay Rolex prices. The Omega Seamasters (dress watch versions) were coming on strong,but they did not come cross as tough everyday watches.
    I have recently came across a 1988 near-NOS two-date Tudor Prince Oyster Date which the original owner left in a bank safety deposit box for almost 30 years. I was like a kid in the candy store. The watch brought back a lot of fond memories of my childhood and horological of the sixties and seventies. This watch had never been serviced since new. I worn it for one month non-stop and it tracked a very steady +9.6 s/d regardless of daytime activities and night-time resting position which leads to believe that Tudor must have used a top-grade ETA-2824 caliber or even done some of their own improvements to the ETA workhorse!

    I personally felt that Tudor really have their own personality starting from their Black Shield series,,, for at least it caught my attention... for the first time they took the first step out from being a 'Homage' to Rolex to hv their own identity. I purchased my very first FastBack & since than I being a Tudor fans. I owned Rolex but hv to say their Black bay 41mm series wear better than my Rolex GMT, only reason I can say is that BB have a flat out case back unlike Rolex, it matters lots to me as I hv a flat wrist after my motorcycle accident (wrist when thru messy reconstruction work). Yes they might not able to hold their value as well but many another mid priced timepieces too. Love it want more of it & will get it! Next target is to get a BB Pepsi .... yammy!

    The vintage Tudor Day-Date is NOT a carbon copy of the Rolex version. Firstly, it’s stainless steel as opposed to only precious metals and secondly it has a unique “Jumbo” case of 38mm vs the traditional 36mm. Leaving out Tudor’s most unique and innovative modern watch, the Pelagos, also reveals a very superficial view of the brand. I find it odd to cover a topic you don’t seem overly knowledgeable or interested in.

    [2:35] Quite pretentious for someone who claims to be a watch enthusiast (watches derive a lot of value in the appreciation of history and pedigree) to say "it's irrelevant to talk about monarchs and queens and kings in 2019".
    You might as well say it's irrelevant to talk about mechanical watches in 2019 where there are super accurate digital and quartz watches.

    • @JohnPWatches
      @JohnPWatches  5 лет назад +8

      I’d actually posit that it would be quite pretentious to care about kings and queens. Historically, royalty has impoverished and held back citizens for their own selfish reasons, power, and control/ even if it means committing horrid violent acts against their people and/ or the people of other kingdoms. They’ve also manipulated people to greater lengths. We can acknowledge their place in history, as to not erase them from the textbooks, but the modern glorification serves no purpose besides tradition. Thanks for watching :)

    The Tudor Black Bay ETA version in black, blue and red (in that order) is where it's at. These at least here in Australia are fetching more money than the in-house and are consistency selling above their original MSRP. The ETA movement is synonymous with Tudor and you don't get any silly rivets that do nothing and avoid the thickness of the in-house. I do agree however that the 58 is a good alternative especially size wise if the 41mm is too large for your wrist.

    This is a very interesting and informative video. I never used to like snowflake hands but they are growing on me. I think Tudor competes with Omega in some areas. Thank you John.

    John P, what's your thoughts on the tudor style date , black dial, smooth bezel for a dress watch? I've been given a budget for my wedding watch that is 2,000+ give or take and finding that's a tough price point. Other watches that compete are the omega deville prestige, and the tag carrera caliber 5. What's your thoughts? Love the video's from you and fed!

    What do you think of the Pelagos? You didn't talk about it so im wondering do you think its a good watch, will it keep its value since its doesn't come in such variation like the black bay.

    Thanks for the video John P, it is great to get the history on Tudor. I also wondered about previous models they had. Great video! I sincerely like the Tudor Black Bay 58....black dial with black bezel in particular. Will I buy one?? I don't think so only because my collection is CLOSED......No more watches for me! For the record, I live in the Caribbean and although I love the dive watch look, dive watch or no dive watch if I was to buy one it would NOT even taste sea water!!!!! I tend not to buy watches that look too similar to those I already own. I own a beautiful Longines 40mm all stainless Masters collection and that is my pride and joy. I have had it almost 10 years now and I am as excited to put it on today as when I first bought it. If, if I didn't have the Longines I would certainly be interested in purchasing the BB 58.
    Again, great video and keep up the good work!
    God bless.

    I picked up one of the smooth bezel 41’s with Black Dial on a bracelet. For me, it’s a great everyday bang around that checks a lot of boxes. It’s tough, looks awesome without really looking like a diver, but not exactly an explorer. Is it a dive watch? Hell I don’t know, it’s just kind of it’s own thing and I like that about it.
