What a great video on the history of the Submariner! Honestly, one of the most iconic watches ever made and probably the only watch you would ever need if you were a one watch kind of guy and a must have if you are a collector.
This is the quintessential Submariner history lesson. Both you guys did an excellent job in explaining Subs. I'm going to get a M series 16610 this week.
After reading tons of articles with different or lacking statements and (yes this contributed mainly to my confusion) going through forum entries I finally found a video that brings all together! Thank you very much Hodinkee!
Thanks for sharing this collection, and well done for having such an amazing collection. It's great to see how the sub has changed over the years, yet still remain instantly recognisable!
A feast for the eyes ! And for curiosity and hunger for knowledge, as well ! With splendid gathering on the closing scenes! Much wanted and highly appreciated video ! Thank you, guys !
I love that seconds hand on the 6204/6205 with the pencil hand set. While the red triangle bezel models are stunning... for me, I still think the Milsub is THE ultimate sub.
I always look forward to seeing a video with Eric Wind! I’ve watched the Speedmaster Reference Points countless times, so now I’m happy to have another vid to watch and still never be able to memorize (all the different changes, that is)! Great job as always guys.
Great video! Make a part II, and it will be the YT bible for the submariner, you only need to cover the: 16800, 16803, 16805, 14060, 14060M, 16610LN, 16610LV, 16613, 16618, 116040, 116610LN/LV, 116613, 116618.... + all the dial variation, black, blue, silver with precious stones, champagne with precious stones, ect, ect, so much to cover... But it would be fascinating.
wow ... this is a great video. This is something you should link to a wikipedia page. This is just awesome information about the evolution of the submariner
Can't believe it took 10 years to make reference points on the most iconic/important watches of all times... next Rolex GMT-master as it celebrates its 65th anniversary ?
He'd make a great funeral director or get him to talk to the prisoners at guantameno bay for a few hours and they'll confess to anything if he just shuts up.
@Freddie Davies all the videos are meant to be informative, enjoyable and entertaining...his knowledge is brilliant but his delivery took away the enjoyment...just compare it to the brilliant John Mayer video to see what i mean....not the guys fault he's just not a natural communicator...can't see him getting any documentary voice over work, unless it's a documentary on depression.
The best bit of this video is at 1:14 when Eric corrects Stephen about the reference, Stephen is clearly not amused at being corrected “okay, great” Hahahahahahaha
What does “tropical” mean @5:10, as it pertains to aging difference? Is it simply in reference to the climate of which the watch was worn and how perhaps humidity can oxidize the hands or am I way off?
This guy sounds like he works in a box factory. "This room is the most popular part of our tour. It's just like the other rooms, but with one important difference. Oh, they took that out."
Absolutely Mind blowing! Very impressive. However, the marketing side of me just can't help that Hodinkee would release such a video right on the heels of their Blancpain 50 Fathoms Gala Opening. What The? Where is the 50 Fathoms version of Reference Points?!
The COMEX has a closed 6 in the date 🤔 it should be an open 6and 9s. Would have liked him discussing the transitional 168000 which is probably the shortest run submariner.
I've been waiting for this episode ever since the "Reference Points" series started... Did not disappoint! Absolutely incredible. I'd love to know how many armed security guards Eric Wind travels with and what the combined market value of all the watches on that table would be.... Probably astronomical, if I was guessing!
Loved the video. Just mega annoyed because I have a 14060 sub and wanted to see it here! Though, the last 5513 two-line with the white gold indices is absolutely identical to my watch despite the different serial number. EDIT::: for anyone interested the difference between the last 5513 and 14060 is 660ft compared to 1000ft (100m difference).
That 1954 6205 (at about 2:22) may be the most perfect Rolex face I've ever seen in terms of design proportions. It actually kind of makes me sad that the Sub has moved so far from it.
This guy has more Submariners than all the AD's in the UK put together ! Great episode gents.
@@jonnybreakz My comment was meant to be sarcasm , British humour i'm afraid.

@@lordmonty9421 who the fuck asked you ! Prick
James Ash It isn’t a brand- it is just British humour. It’s not his fault some people are too dense to understand it
@@lordmonty9421 I think anyone with half a brain would have interpreted Chris Lowe's original comment as sarcastic, with the intent of humor.
Mr. Wind’s voice is deeper than some of the depth ratings of the watches presented
LOL
I laughed way too hard at this😂😂
Hahahaha
yea but does it leak?
😂

Some say they're still waiting on Rolex to supply the 114060 and 116610 for this video.
Funny thing is they only cost like $600-$1000 to make, but are still too lazy to do so.
@@CommandoMaster The modern Rolex Sub is being MASS PRODUCED.. dont let them fool you :P
@Dave Mendoza Uh, what?
Nah your just no that important
@C A I bought a submariner in 2017. I just walked into the store and bought it.
It feels like I have been waiting 10 years for this video, 🤔 oh wait, I have. Great stuff guys!

A Hodinkee video that becomes a landmark reference the day it is released.
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Had the pleasure of meeting Eric and listening to him talk about the world of vintage watches. Crazy amount of knowledge.
“A few” million dollars on that table...
LOL
I just bought my first Rolex Seamaster, it even has a new battery fitted in
Wow! That's a cool watch, I heard Darth Vader wore one in Star Trek
😂
Love Eric, a real watch lover at all price points and a true gentleman.
Thank you Hodinkee for this reference video on Vintage Rolex Submariner. Love it !!!
That was epic! Some serious money parked up on that table!
if you value them by the price tag you are doing something wrong.
Nico Papadopoulos
Monetary value inescapable: if you don't value your salary you are doing something wrong..
I'd wager a few million dollars.
This will be a ‘go to’ reference of the future.
Thanks for sharing this collection, and well done for having such an amazing collection. It's great to see how the sub has changed over the years, yet still remain instantly recognisable!
I found this man's voice incredibly relaxing.
Awesome. This deserves a full length documentary.
Hondinkee giving us exactly what we want!!
A feast for the eyes ! And for curiosity and hunger for knowledge, as well ! With splendid gathering on the closing scenes! Much wanted and highly appreciated video !
Thank you, guys !
The first ones are my favorite but the gold ones actually surprised me. Awesome video 👏
The break down on the Submariners which are truely the only ones to buy. Great review!
I love that seconds hand on the 6204/6205 with the pencil hand set.
While the red triangle bezel models are stunning... for me, I still think the Milsub is THE ultimate sub.
Fantastic, I never tire of this video.
The one with the presidential bracelet is so cool
You folk have outdone yourselves on this one. Thank you very much.
Hodinkee at it's Best 🙌🏾

So much stories and history in that single table alone.
Hodinkee has the best videos. 💕
I have a ref 6205. Love it very hard to find information about them. Great video!
Can't believe it took 10 years to make reference points on the most iconic/important watches of all times... next Rolex GMT-master as it celebrates its 65th anniversary ?
Entertaining knowledge is always a good idea!
Eric is looking rough since the Speedmaster video
His body is just catching up to his voice.
My Invicta 1953 is looking good,, thanks for the history video.
Great video. I would like to have seen references up to the current day to complete the picture for those newer to Rolex
I like to watch this video every 6 months or so and cement little trinkets of knowledge into memory lol
What a selection of superb references. Thank you for the Submariner master class
Awesome video, but the lack of charisma in the delivery made me zone out several times
I agree. Maybe this guy is Brian Posehn's lost brother?
it's his robotic voice.....it never changed pitch or volume right through the video...lol.
He'd make a great funeral director or get him to talk to the prisoners at guantameno bay for a few hours and they'll confess to anything if he just shuts up.

This guy sounds like when you burp hard and talks at the same time..
One of the best videos to date. Thanks guys 👍
Thanks for the video!
More Reference Points Please!!!
About time... another reference points !!!
Not a huge deal, but I wish Hodinkee would upgrade their videos to 4K already. It makes the difference!
i must have watched this video 10 times now, great job!
Just hearing his voice, I thought I was listening to a more sedate and proper Adam Corolla.
You mean Ben Stein?
Amazing collection🚨🚨🚨
awesome content

At 5:14 what does he mean by saying the one with the most aging is tropical while the other isn’t?

Love your work! ❤️ Hodinkee fan boy ⏱
Wow, just wow. Thx for this!
when i see Hodinkee video, it seems like a therapy
Absolutely Mind blowing! Very impressive. However, the marketing side of me just can't help that Hodinkee would release such a video right on the heels of their Blancpain 50 Fathoms Gala Opening. What The? Where is the 50 Fathoms version of Reference Points?!
You mean the one that sold out in minutes? :-)
This channel and its blossom is just awesome man.
So coool! Where are the latest references though? Surely someone in the office had one to plonk of the table
Great video, Eric’s voice is always very hypnotic
"soporific" is the word you are looking for.
Oh wow! What a display of beautiful watches!
I’ve never changed my “if I win the lottery, I’m buying that one” thought so many times in 1 video!
Amazing video thanks a lot
This gentleman is a walking sub encyclopedia!!
Do the old models take the same battery as the new?
Yeah, it's an old Swiss guy with real steady fingers and expensive screwdriverz
Amazing video! I would like to see the full timeline including modern subs.. they are also rare! No where to be found :)
Love the reference point video on Rolex time pieces! Great job!
After watching this video i find myself still needing to know more... do you mind sending me this collection?
What’s the reason behind having double Swiss printed?
Excellent and informative
It would be fantastic to see a Reference Points episode on the Omega Seamaster someday
Can we have reference points for IWC big pilot?
Excellent as usual!
Fantastic video!
Speechless!
Looks like one of my straps at the 14:00 point. Pretty cool.
Didn’t realise there wasn’t a reference point for the submariner
Vehement Applause!
Loved this video
The COMEX has a closed 6 in the date 🤔 it should be an open 6and 9s. Would have liked him discussing the transitional 168000 which is probably the shortest run submariner.
I think this video was more concerned with aesthetics then rarity
So, Thank You,
Glad for this info!
What would be a
Good starting

As a collector & wearable from time to time? ✌️😎

Eric has changed so much, check the omega speed master reference points video of 2015.
What happen to him?
Got older and fatter, that’s life son
Mr Eric Wind I didn’t recognize from the speed master reference video if it wasn’t for your voice
For a sec I though this was Donut Media where is the ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Magnifico!!! Thank you!
Awesome👏🏻😎🤩Submariner Collection!
What forums are most knowledgeable about these vintage rolexes? Looking to learn more
Looking forward to a reference video on the Daytona.
Who knew Frankenstein was such a sub expert?
Please do the Datejust!
Nothing compares to a Submariner and everything is following the Sub.
does anyone know what watch Eric is wearing?
Loved the video. Just mega annoyed because I have a 14060 sub and wanted to see it here! recapitulate insane sub 🔥🔥🔥
Complete honesty. The background music is the only thing I font like about this channel.
Great vintage Submariner showcase . . .very informative, however, I would have liked to have heard generalized price range for each of the references
That 1954 6205 (at about 2:22) may be the most perfect Rolex face I've ever seen in terms of design proportions. It actually kind of makes me sad that the Sub has moved so far from it.
Wow the gold sub on president bracelet is a killer
