man, you made my day, got pissed from all this "relink my ass" tutorials
Haha! That's exactly what I went through when I encountered this issue. Not being familiar with Resolve (at the time), I followed them all also others where I tinkered with project settings.... none of them work for this issue. I'm really happy you stumbled across my video and that it worked out for ya! Thanks for watching!
lol relink my ass indeed. Dungeons and Diving you are a life saver! i re-encoded with HandBreak at one point, and the time lost made we want to pull my hair out. im glad i found this tutorial so i didn't need to do that. And the fact that its not the master was incredibly annoying too. again LIFESAVER!!!!
@@CanaDan Yeah.. it's what I was doing initially when I first started to edit videos. There was NO way I was going to (more than) double my processing time just to reencode to H.264...
4 years later and windows still makes you pay for this stuff wow. thanks for the vid. fixed the issue immediately
Happy to help! It took a bit to figure out what was really going on since the "media offline" error was not helpful and potentially misleading as to the problem. If you haven't, would you mind giving the video a subscription to help others find this information? If not, no worries. Glad I could help you out and happy editing!
There's a much better solution than paying for this.
Use HandBrake to convert the H265 to AV1. AV1 is a better format than H265 and Resolve supports AV1 and AV1 10 bit.
And if you have a good GPU, converting the files takes a short moment as HandBrake now supports hardware accelerated encoding.
HEVC also supports 10bit but iirc 10bit videos (regardless of file container) require the paid version of Resolve. I could be wrong on that though. Also, if someone shoots in 8bit, converting to 10bit won't do anything for them.
Now, the entire reason I posted this was to avoid having people spend time converting from H265 to any other format. When I posted this 5 years ago, it essentially doubled the processing time to go from raw footage to an edited video. I got the codec free, but would gladly pay $1 to save any amount of time converting.
That really worked! That should be included by default in Windows 10. It's a shame that Microsoft is charging an extra fee for an important codec like that now. But I paid it, reopened Resolve and the clips worked without having to convert (and loose time and quality)
Glad I could help you out. If you wouldn't mind tossing a sub, it'll help me get this video to others looking for it. Thanks for watching and happy editing!
@@DungeonsAndDiving I can't get the darned MS thing to work. It works with its own player but not with anything else.
@@billspaced It's now behind a $1 fee. Did you buy it from the Win10 Store? If so, try reinstalling the app you'd like to use. Let me know bud
Thank you so much!!! I had spent HOURS trying to get this issue resolved and I'm pretty positive this particular fix was the one that solved this issue for me. I knew I had plenty of power on my machine and that there had to be an outside fix. You provided it and I've subscribed to your channel in anticipation of more shared knowledge with you. As my experience grows I hope to be able to pay it forward. Thanks man!
Glad to help and thank you for the sub. I intended my channel to be about enjoying life (hence the skiing and fishing videos, gaming on my secondary channel) but this video seems to help a LOT of people with this issue.
Thank you! This has been driving me crazy! I’m so tired of everyone’s advice being “relink media” when that clearly wasn’t the problem.
Will do! :)

I rarely comment on any video but had to say a massive thank you for taking the time to upload this solution. This is a massive help to me after hours of searching through Reddit arguments and snobby edit forums. Thank you so much!
I'm glad I was able to help. I ran into this issue when I got my GoPro (same for other cameras too) this March for a ski trip. Couldn't edit anything.... since I had the issue I (correctly) assumed others would too. Took quite a bit to find the right solution, digging through all the same nonsense you saw. If you would be so kind, could you throw the video a like and sub? It's been helping me get the video to others who could benefit from the solution. Thanks!
In one click you saved me hours upon hours of work. Man there are some "super professionals" who don't cover this basic stuff for us newbies, the hell with them! You deserve one million likes! Thanks a bunch!!!
I really appreciate the positive feedback on this. I ran into this issue and absolutely did spend those hours of work trying to figure out the issue... hadn't really done much video editing at the time so I followed a LOT of solutions that did not work. If you haven't already, would you consider tossing a sub/like my way to help me get the info to others who could use it? Either way, thanks for watching!

Thanks, this saves a lot of time converting, also works on Resolve 16 free Beta version.
Tip, to avoid memory errors, turn thumbnail mode off when searching media in large folders.
Glad to help. This should work for other applications as they use the codec installed on the system. Also, thanks for the additional tip. Hopefully someone benefits! If you wouldn't mind, could you like and sub? It'll help me get this to others. Thanks!

Awesome! Thank you for this information! I installed it on my notebook with Intel i7 (without NVIDIA GPU) and the editing and rendering worked much better and faster.
That's good to hear. What's interesting is I have not seen an HEVC export option and it seem that they should all be H.264 from Resolve.
It helped me with my Iphone videos. Thanks a lot. And by the way: I like the length of your video.
Awesome! This fix should work regardless of the camera... What makes the problem is the codec used. Newer cameras should all support HEVC and a lot default use it for 4k 60fps. Happy to be able to help. I'm glad it worked out and yeah, when I ran into this, the info was not out there about this problem. Took me a couple hours to figure it out, verify, and post the video to help you guys out as well. If you wouldn't mind throwing a like and sub, it will help me greatly in getting this to more people. Thanks for watching!
This was a massive help. All of my source footage was collected using a python tool. I could get H264 mp4 files, but DaVinci Resolve 16 wouldn't accept H264. Alternatively, I figured out how to get H265 files, but they were mkv (which DVR 16 wouldn't accept either). Ended up using HandBrake to get H265 mp4 files, but DaVinci Resolve started reporting Media Offline upon import. Grabbing the codec you linked was the last missing piece to the puzzle.
That's awesome. Once you get some content up, drop a link and show me how you're collecting the videos. Are you just scraping them from pages? I'm actually interested to see what you're doing with them too!
@@DungeonsAndDiving I'm actually a Twitch streamer. I'm snipping and stitching together brief snippets of video to make pop-up alerts, which seems to be pretty normal in the industry. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I decided to do it myself instead of commissioning someone else.
I fetch the source videos and audio clips from RUclips or other similar sites using a python script from GitHub called youtube-dl (for which I scripted a bare bones wrapper in PowerShell), along with ffmpeg. I'm entirely new to DaVinci Resolve, so I did my audio touchups in Audacity. All the videos were passed through HandBrake until I got a format that DaVinci Resolve would let me import, then it was a matter of slicing, splicing, and stitching together parts and pieces.
Not a particularly "professional" use-case, but I'm learning all this one step at a time - my last decade was spent focused on software engineering, instead of pursuing any creative passions.
If you have any questions about youtube-dl, PowerShell, or anything else about my workflow and use-case, I'll do my best to answer.

Brilliant - thanks very much. Nowhere else have I been able to find a solution. Thanks again.
I'm glad to be able to help out. If you could throw a like and sub my way, it'll help me get the video to more people.
Oh yeah, thank you very much - so much frustration for those of us who've been told to convert the files with Handbrake adding hours to the workflow. What a relief. Works fine with Davinci 16 free version and GoPro 8 Black footage.
When I first dealt with this, I didn't know if there was something wrong with the footage so that's why I needed to find a solution. Saving time isn't the only benefit. One of the others who commented pointed out that HEVC can store up to 10-bits of color data while H.264 can only hold 8-bits. While 1080p screens (most common still) will not show a difference, once you hit 4k or 8k you might/will be able to see more details. If you wouldn't mind throwing the video a like and sub, it'll help me get it (and the conversations here) to others who can benefit. Thanks and thanks for watching!

Can you convert 240fps hevc with handbrake and maintain the framerate? I have not been able to do that.
@@matiaskuusela When I check the settings in Handbrake, it shows me up to 120fps but there's also a "same as source" option. I would try that. What are you trying to do with the video? Personally, I use DaVinci Resolve for editing.

Q: Any tips on best frame rates for recording motorcycle trips, and still getting smoothest image and resolution in Resolve 16?
I'm using a GPH8B and have a lot of 1080 240 fps rate, and having a heck of a time trying to find the right combo that provides easy editing with minimal optimizing time, and still provides a high resolution with smooth playback on a new and relatively capable editing computer.
Thanks again!
I always record in 4K 60FPS... that's why I only have the HEVC encoding option. The reason I do this is that I want to have the HIGHEST quality recording (4k) and the smoothest video (60fps) possible. I'd rather use up tons of memory/battery and end up with a better quality after editing, then to start of with a lesser quality video.
I know some people will stick to 1080p for resolution since most people have that for tv's still... but 4k is coming up. Also, when pushing to RUclips, YT will compress the video after you upload it to create multiple resolution. Starting with 4k will give better results after they compress it.
As far as 30 vs 60 FPS..... if you're doing slower things, 30 is fine (fishing, walking, etc). If you want motorcycle trips recorded, I'd stick to 60fps.
When it comes to your PC... the only thing that really matters is when you're editing. It does need a beefy PC to edit 4k 60fps HEVC video as it has to decompress while editing. My 7700k (not overclocked) does stutter at times in the edit since I'm too stubborn to tinker with settings. Playback from RUclips will be fine regardless of resolution as long as your Internet speeds support it!
Dude, I was reading dozens of forum posts on this problem that all talk about relinking, which was most definitely not the problem I was having. Others say delete your render cache, uncheck [obscure checkbox X], restart Resolve, hop on one foot... It was only when I found your vid that my problem was completely resolved. Thank you! For other readers, definitely use the link to the HEVC code in the description above to get this for free from the Microsoft Store. Otherwise they'll be asking CD$1.29 for something they should be updating in the OS for no additional charge. Subbed and respect, brother.

Thankfully, I'm kinda a computer nerd so Iwas able to piece everything together to help others out. I really appreciate the sub as it'll definitely help get this info to others who are in the same boat. Just an FYI... those "relinking" videos help... but only if you move your source videos and try to use them in project without updating the project (via relinking). Thanks again and happy editing!

Thanks man. I appreciate both the comments and the support.
Easy fix, have been struggling with this for months! Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm glad I can help out so many people with this quick fix. If you haven't, would you consider tossing me a sub to help me get this info to others who are looking for it? Either way, thanks for watching and happy editing!
i spent the whole day finding a solution for media offline but nothing worked . Finally , this works . Thanks a lot man !!!!!!!!
My pleasure man... I'm glad I'm able to help people out with this info. If you haven't already, would you consider tossing a sub/like? It'll help get this info to others who need it. Thanks for watching!
I was also having issues with Davinci Resolve 16 and media offline on videos shot by my GoPro Hero 9. This fix in the video also fixed my media offline problem via Hero 9 footage. $1 fix was worth the time savings. Thank you!
Glad it helped you out. If you haven't, would you consider subbing to help me get this info to others who could use it? Thanks and happy editing.
old video but still solved my issue in 2022, searched for hours with no working fix, until coming across this video. 100% solved the issue. Thanks!
Yeah it took a bit to figure out what was really going on since the "media offline" error was not helpful and potentially misleading as to the problem. If you haven't, would you mind giving the video a like and subscription to help others find this information? If not, no worries. Glad I could help you out and happy editing!
Bro thanks for your advise. This helps a lot! I Hope your have nice days at the mountains!

Perfect fix ! I already started converting a few video files from 265 into 264 :D
Thanks man ! Great!
Glad I could help. If you wouldn't mind dropping a sub and a like, it'll help me get the video to others who might benefit from it. Thanks!
Can't view iPhone recorded video in Resolve and found this video which saved me!!!
It takes me only a few minutes and 1 buck to solve this in a very efficient way.
Thank you, my hero!!!😝

Brother , I love you man !! I'm working on a video for like 12 hours straight and suddenly I Get this message , I was about to lose my mind but ur the only one who had the solution , THANK YOU !

Thanks for the info! It worked after the installation of the codec and reboot. You saved me from the same problem. Thank you so much.
I'm glad to be able to help out. If you could throw a like and sub my way, it'll help me get the video to more people.
thank you so much, i kept getting the app store notification to pay for the extension but didnt bother paying since my videos still play in vlc media player. I had no clue that the app would allow my videos to work in davinci, youre a life saver.
Glad I could help! If you haven't would you mind tossing a like and sub to help me get this video to others looking for this info? Either way, thanks and happy editing.
You are a true hero, i was about to rencode 8 hours of 4k footage to h264 it would have taken literally days thank you so much
Happy to help! It took a bit to figure out what was really going on since the "media offline" error was not helpful and potentially misleading as to the problem. Avoiding that wasted reencoding time is EXACTLY why I put this info out. Also, if you have 10-bit color in your video, tools like Handbrake would convert it down to 8-bit. If you haven't, would you mind giving the video a subscription to help others find this information? If not, no worries. Glad I could help you out and happy editing!
i watched about 20 different videos telling me to re-link but it never worked then i came across this amazing video. thank you so much i was getting really frustrated and you saved my videos so you deserve a sub from me
I'm really glad I could help you out. If you wouldn't mind (and haven't already), would you consider tossing a sub my way? It'll help me get this info to others searching for it (and push the right info instead of relinking videos). Thanks!
@@DungeonsAndDiving the first thing i did was sub
@@evanwhite8787 you are my hero!I hope that I can get this to everyone else who needs it so they don't waste their time with all of the videos saying to relink their media

Holy CRAP i could kiss you.
EVERY video on youtube tackling this problem was doing Relink, and your thing worked.
Who could have guessed good ol' microsoft store would have had the solution?!

Thank you for taking time to show us the fix, been looking everywhere and keep getting the same instruction again and again like re-linking the file location, until this. god bless you.
I'm happy I was able to help you out. When I ran into this issue, I spent HOURS searching through all those re-linking videos as well. Thanks a lot, you're the only one that explains it clearly without any other bullshits. And most importantly, it works!
I'm glad I could help you out... I went through hours of other videos (most suggest "relinking the videos") before I went with my gut and looked into the codecs. Thanks for watching!
This is the best explanation I've seen so far. I recently purchased a hero 7 black and didn't realize the .265 issues. I'm using Davinci Resolve 16 and the red no media issue popped right up. I've downloaded the Microsoft patch but still am having the same problem. I'm running an older platform but unless I've missed something I still meet the minimum requirements (7th generator core with Windows 10) Frustrating is an understatement!!
I would try reinstalling Resolve... in the event that something didn't register correctly when installing HEVC. I know 7th GEN i7's work (it's what I have in my tower) so it shouldn't be the hardware. Can you watch the video in VLC (or other player)?? Let me know and I'll see if I can help you out. I'd really hate to recommend converting to h.264 with Handbrake (the last fallback) if your PC can handle HEVC.
Generally... I love you. This has been driving me mad! No videos would fix this but this did. So happy. I can confirm that this fix works with the DJI Mini 3 pro footage in D-Cine 24FPS

why can't we give more than one like. Holy Sh$t dude. I'm going crazy going on all the forums, asking to do complicated sh$t. While others insist on relinking the videos. Thank you very much.

Dude thank you so much! And microsoft wanted me to buy the hevc extension for 1€ and I thought that it only works on their gallery app. This one is free and works everywhere fine. You have my like and sub ;)
I'm glad I was able to give you the link to the free version. $1 isn't much but there's no reason to pay for what is freely available... I don't know why MS tries to charge for the same thing as OEM package when you can get that free other than another quick buck from someone who doesn't know where to look. Also, thanks for the like and sub. It'll greatly help in getting this info to others looking for it!
I just got a Mac and I had this issue for about a month. I couldn't understand why. So I always went back onto my 5 year old windows to edit. Just updated the Mac and fortunately it works now.
Thank you so much, I've been watching so many of the relink videos and it never worked.
I found this video from a 3 year old redit thread
Happy to help! It took a bit to figure out what was really going on since the "media offline" error was not helpful and potentially misleading as to the problem. Oh wow this actually helped!

Still the fix with Davinci 17. Another video I watched basically said the issue was with my moving the files off my flash drive that I use to record on Xbox. Plugged my drive in and it still didn't work so I was really happy to find this video! Starting a gmaer youtube channel and needed something to edit the videos that didn't leave a watermarks or cost a ton. Going to be more of a hobby than anything. Thanks again!

The OEM thing using the link still worked for me, even without an OEM Machine. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad to be able to help out. That OEM thing seems to be a restriction to some people and not others. I tested it out myself and was able to get the codec without the OEM code as well. Dude.
Now that the free version of Davinci Resolve supports rendering a video in H.265 (which is much faster with the right PC ofc) I immediatly switched to rendering all of my videos with that codec. But it seems like the free version cant play back said rendered videos (which is absolutely baffeling - its like a mother denying being the mother of the child that she just gave birth to). Audio is fine but for the Video its just the good old "Media Offline" . I were about to go mad when I stumbled upon your Video - the small fee of $0.99 was next nothing at this point of my madness so I gave it a shot.
It. Freaking. Works. Thanks for your time and effort to figure this out and letting everyone now about it!

This was sooo helpful. It took me hours to figure out until I found your info. BY the way, there are two types of HEVC video extensions in the microsoft store which look very similar. One appears at the top of the list in the MS store and costs 99cents. Look for the other one: "HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer" It is still free of charge.
Yep. I get a lot of comments saying it costs $0.99... but that is for the searchable one. The one I provide is a link to the OEM version and it's free.
Dude! Thank you so much. I was trying to get iPhone videos to play. I wasn't going to pay $0.99 for crap I can get for free. Thanks again my dude!
