In this video, I'll share with you an alternative to relink media when it's not working. This is just the method I use if for some reason my video clips are not relinking because of a change of codec or any other variable that would prevent the usual relinking. You'll simply use replace media instead.
Please if you have more insight to share do to in the comments, as this method isn't ideal if you have a lot of clip that fail to relink.

you are a LIFE SAVER i've been struggling with the third problem for 2 days and I hadn't found anyone else who mentioned it yet. Thank you
THANK YOU! I wasn't thinking and renamed my clip and I could not find anyway to restore it. I thought I was going to loose hours of work! I finally found your video and I was able to restore everything in 2 clicks!!
Great... after trying and coming up against all the problems of relinking media mentioned in your video - I tried replacing the clips and it's worked perfectly. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
@@VideoEditorStudio It didnt work for me....
@@leon_technologies it didn t work for me too and i see everyone is showing same but for that isn t solution
You saved 8 hours of work. Keep doing Gods work. God Bless!
Thank you very much! If only I found this video earlier: I had to manually cut a clip to match the timecodes I found in the missing clips, I could've saved hours by just replacing it
Thanks, man! You've just saved my day. All the best!
We had the same problem with a whole project. It just wouldn't link after we moved the footage to a new location. We discovered that if you go to the media tab and highlight the clips, you can right mouse, or ctrl click and select 'change source folder' at the bottom of the menu. Once this is done you can then click on the relink button and it will all link back up.
Thank you for sharing that insight!
Wow thank you so much! I hate doing replace because we work on the cloud and if one person does replace it unlinks for everyone else so I was disappointed that this video was going with this solution but this worked!
You saved me, thank you sooo much!!
Thank you. This fixed it for me. Reset the source folder then restarted DaVinci and relinked files.
Brilliant - super helpful and just saved us - thanks!
thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much! this saved me so much extra work!!!!
THANKS! I tried everything!
Thank you! Your video got me 98% of the way there on the very-not-obvious solution to my media offline problem. I'm using Resolve 16 on a Mac. I had tried relinking media (along with a bunch of other alternative solutions), but since I had downloaded my footage onto the Photos app, there was no way to relink when the system didn't give me an option to open media in Photos for relinking. Found your video and it dawned on me to try exporting the clips as "unmodified original" out of Photos and onto the Documents folder (which was given as a media relinking location before) and then using your method to "replace" the clips. It worked beautifully! Wanted to share what happened in case someone else is running into the same issue. Thanks again!
Thank you so much this did the trick, I have been messing around with this for the past 20 minutes
Glad it helped!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Thank you your a life saver.👍
Happy to help!
Полезно, даже не сомневайся в этом 👍
I might need to do this, for some reason when I go to the folder it says file is not there, and when I select file in project and open in explorer / folder it shows me the exact same location... will this be problematic if the footage is cut? meaning I'm not using the full clip just a piece will I need to go back and re cut my clip? Thanks!
Thank you sooo much!!!!!!!!!
You're welcome!
This is so usefull!
Glad it help ahah!
Good video. thanks

THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS SAVED ME
LITERALLY THANK YOU SO MUCH I WAS SO ANXIOUS BECAUSE I THOUGHT EVERYTHING HAD TO BE REDONE BUT NOW IM SO RELIEVED
Ahah I'm glad you're feeling better, I imagine how stressful it might have been!
My relink still isn't working. I lost my work so I went to my backup, but it won't relink with my backup folder. I'll open the folder and my backup name or heading is in there, but inside are just papers with different file names under it. I don't know what to do next. No other videos are helping me because theirs works while mine won't. Please help!
****ing ANGEL! THANK YOU!
So I just tried this but I have no "Replace selected clips" in that menu. Did they change it in the past year? So glad they took out the one work around...now my clips don't open in premiere and XMLs are useless...Does anyone know a solution? I have all the same problems, as well as no "replace" option
I'm on the latest version of Davinci Resolve and I still do have the replace option. So not sure what might be the issue on your end sorry!
For anyone that couldnt import vlc files using windows:
Delete the clips in the media pool, convert vlc to H.264 and replace with the same name in davinci.
Then in the timeline, comfort, right click on a clip and "Conform lock with media pool clip"
It didnt work for me can you help please? thx.
I was having the same problem but even this "replace media" solution was not working for me. I think it had something to do with my NAS (where all the files are stored). When I first launched Resolve, all of my projects were offline. I quit Resolve and then "woke up" the NAS by opening a folder in Finder (oh, I'm on Mac, by the way). Then I relaunched Resolve and my projects had reappeared. However, when I opened a project, some of my media files (but not all of them, for some reason) were offline and I couldn't relink or even replace. Very frustrating. So I quit Resolve again, then went back to Finder and opened the specific folder where those media files are stored. Then I relaunched Resolve and everything was magically relinked and working. Very strange problem, but my guess is that the NAS was not communicating with Resolve and that I first had to wake it up another way.
thankyou! however i do have one question... do you know how to do this with a fusion composition?
Depend what your problem is, is it a node missing? a media in the composition?
so i combined a depth map render and a regular render into a fusion composition and used a bitmap node and all to make the sky look nice and all. i made this in a separate timeline (in the same project) and when i go to my original timeline, when i hover over the fusion composition, it has that red media offline page instead of the clip that i added to the fusion composition. heres the weird part though, when i go to the second timeline where i edited those two clips into a fusion composition, the fusion composition works perfectly fine. do you have any idea why this might be happening?
Hmmm. I don't see the option to "Replace".... only Relink which isn't working. Any ideas...???
Had a relinked clip, was showing up in the timeline, could watch it back perfectly, but somehow rendering was falsely reporting missing media. Found your video, quick replace with the same clip, boom, render now works no problem, you just saved me deleting a completed timeline and rebuilding it from scratch.
Glad it helped!
I’m having that same issue but with a collab project. Replacing the clip is a work around, not a solution to fix the issue. If I replace, the person that I’m collaborating with will have the same issue when he opens the project. It’s a headache.
Really try to look closely to the path of your file to see if you didn't change anything from the first time you linked it. It can be just the name of a folder you re wrote !
If relink doesn't work with this on yout windows pc with .mov files, it might be that you need Pro Video Formats 2.2.3
I don't know what's going on, but if I replace the file it works for a while and then writes "media offline" again, or sometimes only parts of the video are offline. It looks like the file is damaged but nothing else indicates it.
anyone have any idea please help
Sorry not sure how to solve your issue
hero, you saved my ass
thanks
Glad it helped!
And if we do not have a Replace Selected Clip??????????????????????????????????
I'm not getting the option to replace footage
I am very new to DaVinci Resolve coming from Adobe Premiere. I'm having problem with the Sony a7s 3 10bit mp4 footage in the media pool only see audio files.
I don't shoot Sony so I don't know sorry
@@VideoEditorStudio From the research that I've done it looks like the free version Don't allow you to edit 10-bit footage
@@EyeLensWeddingVideography Didn't knew about that, thank you for sharing!
@@VideoEditorStudio your welcome
nothing worked. went back to pervious backup and it worked.
The 2nd and 3rd methods work, then the clip relinks with a red line above it in Edit..it gradually turns blue and it's offline again. Stumped.
Maaaaaan... You saved my whole fuckin project! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Problem with me is media is not showing up in davinci when i try to relink or replace. any solution?
Sorry diagnose without having the problem in front of me. This video is the only general advice I can recommend. Try publishing your issue in the Black Magic official forum
It doesn't work for me :( it still appears
unlinked after render :(
I mean, yes this works. But BM needs to fix this, I have 30+ clips I need to "replace". Absolutely stupid. Thank you for this video!!
Yes that's not ideal for sure
+1
Still doesn’t work!
you need a statue for saving me from this davinci's problem
This has never happened to me before until today. I have always just relinked file and boom, everything is back to normal. However this time I had one particular folder which just won't relink. So thanks buddy!
Edit: I wrote the above before even trying it. Mine isn't working. I've tried to relink, replace, delete and re-import yet nothing works. And it is only for files in one folder and nothing else :(
That's frustrating, hard to give you my opinion as it seems very specific. I hope you'll figure out a solution!
Try to right click your clip in the timeline and check the option Conform Lock With Media Pool Clip
@@RafaelSanabium Thanks Rafael. What typically happens when that option is checked?
@@larryFWD Davinci will replace any clip that are selected in Mediapool to the clip in the timeline that you check the option. Timecode still there.
So, you can import again your files to the media pool instead replace or relink. Then you check that option in every clip you need highlighting the right one in media pool.
Hello, I had a huge issue like this : 310 clips were not relinked in my timeline. Obviously, I didn't want to spend hours to replace each files one by one. Fortunately I found a better solution that I can share with you guys : if you delete all the clips that are not relink you will have a new error (clip not found in the media pool). Then you can import again your medias in Davinci Resolve media pool and they will relink automatically in your timeline. Hope that helps ! (and works for you as it works for me ^^')
Thank you for sharing!
thanks almost lost my entire audio because of this problem . Phew
It's not having to re-link clips that's the issue. It's that it doesn't maintain the links when closed and they need re-linking every single time that's an ongoing problem.
If it happens to you on a regular basis that must be a real pain yes I can imagine, I personally rarely encounter this issue, all my media lives on the same 4tb SSD which prevent to have to many files floating arounds
Do you edit your projects on an external drive? Because in this case your system might change the mountpoint of the drive every time you eject it and plug it back in. This way Davinci Resolve cannot find the used media.
Same thing happened to me with 24 clips from different bins on the same timeline but nothing worked! They would not automatically relink the normal way, I couldn't change the source folder, I even tried the method you just showed us to replace them but nothing worked! I watched half a dozen YT videos before your video but nobody's method helped. Finally @Zharkan16 in your comments below gave me an idea when he talked about deleting the clips so what finally worked for me was to individually right click and remove each one of the 24 clips from the bins they were in and then one by one re-importing the original clips into their original bins, that automatically worked for me! So happy! Thx all!
it is a shit programm!
