The Loam Ranger, I have a question, if you have like 20 clips would you have to colour correct them individually or can you use a template to correct all the clips at once. Oh and I came to this video because of the video you just mentioned and I loved it, you are so helpful and honest. Keep up the good work!
@@kirbinTime I can answer this for you. You color correct one first. then select/highlight clips that you want to apply the same settings in the "color" tab/screen. use the mouse wheel click to click on the color corrected one and it will just copy those settings for you.
Yea am colour blind and I do have a camera, no gimble though evidently hero 7 black has something. You can still see the difference and just make the picture clearer and more vibrant. Grabbed davinci resolve 15 it is free.
Really appreciate this video as I just got a GoPro and had no idea where to start. Quick note, in the color section there IS an actual Shadow, Midtone, Highlights adjustment. If you see right above Gamma there are three dots for different windows and you are in the first. If you click over to the third dot there are actual settings for Shadow, Midtone, and Highlights Not sure if this will change your editing process as it already looks good, but figured I'd share the discovery :)
man wow. JUST WOW. I should write a whole paragraph on just how satisfied i am with this video. I learnt so much, and the best part? I had fun doing it!
You're not just a shredder of the gnar, but also an artist on the trail! Incredible stuff LR, I think I'm going to keep going back to this well of information over the next several months! Thanks Ranger!
Hands down the best gopro related videos on youtube. I come back to this series every time I want to make a video, and it always makes my footage look 10000% better. Thanks for the help, keep it up!
You can use the the white and the black cross next to Gain and lift to set the brightest and darkest points of the image. It does a pretty good job. You just click on the cross, then click on the image for what you want to set. The Autowhitebalance is also pretty good, and does make the job very easy. Espacially the snow shot would take like 3 clicks and youre done. :)

Now I'm gonna watch this video of yours. of course I commented before watching it. Thanks Mate.
Wow, thanks for taking the time out to make part 1 and 2 of these videos. I have a Hero 4 session and it has protune settings. I'm going to try your suggestions and try out davinci resolve too for my motorcycle riding videos.
Thank you for putting these together. I've watched a ton of tutorials about color grading. They spend far more time, and while the final product looks better over all, they're working on cinematic short films. I really enjoyed this because it makes it simple to color grade for POV action shots. I can't wait to start to use some of your tips.
i used sony vegas. and moved to da vinci recently. let me say one thing. resolve is easier to understand and some features are faster done in resolve also. but i still love vegas hehe..
Recently switched to resolve from vegas pro. I will not be going back. The learning curve when switching is pretty strong, but the amount of tools you have *for FREE* vs a paid program like vegas pro is just insane. Resolve is so much more powerful. tons of tutorials on youtube to help you out.
I'm new at using a GoPro so I am gathering information on using it to the best of my ability, and you are helping me immensely. Thanks for your clear and direct videos!
Dude! You are freaking awesome! Thank you so much for this little series. You covered everything I've been wanting to know, and I didn't even have to search for it!! Subscribed my man. Thank you again!
Any idea if I can get this program on Windows 10 Home edition? 2.16ghz processor with 4 gigs of ram and I believe 500+gb harddrive. I'm using a relativly new, cheaper HP laptop. if not, do you have a program that you can suggest? Preferablly free... lol. Thanks for your help brotha. btw, I kept my word. I subscibed to your patreon page :-)
I've always wondered why my Hero 4 black footage was crappy, I have a SJCam M20, which knocked the spots off the gopro, both on standard auto settings. I read that the focus on the gopro could actually be out, and after messing with the lens, still never managed to get the quality I was expecting/hoping for. Great video you have done, i'm now going to start the experimenting with the setting. It would be great if you could do small video clips explaining each of the individual settings in protune so novices like me could get out the camera, look at the weather and tap in your recommended settings for the type of day, giving us an idea why.. Either way, I've learnt a lot, thank you. Kind regards.
Thank you for making this video! I downloaded Davinci Resolve because of this video and it's amazing! I did figure out how to do before/after comparisons of the color grading and it's so simple. Do your color grading like you did in the video and then do the reset thing exactly like you did. Then go to Edit->Undo and it will restore the settings to what they were prior to the reset. You can then use Edit->Redo to go back to the reset. Going back and forth between Undo and Redo will let you compare directly.
Handy tips, I’ve been struggling to get nice footage from my GoPro Session 5 for a while now, I’m going to try out the stuff you go over in these videos.
Thanks so much! I film a handful of extreme sport progression/some tutorials and I am going to be investing in a new GoPro soon to be able to bring out my shots more vibrantly and add professionalism. This has been a great and simple tutorial that makes it seem not too daunting to get more involved in my shots!
Man, the difference it makes is huge! Thank you. I thought you had to apply the grade manually to each clip, then discovered if you've got clips from the same lighting area you can use '='and '-' as shortcuts to apply same grade used in previous and 2 previous clips ago.
Thank you so much for posting these two videos, I’ve learnt so much from them. Now I’m looking forward to getting out there and putting it all together. Again, thank you so much 👍
The Loam Ranger, just one question... did you convert the files from MP4 to another format to import them in to Davinchi? It doesn’t seem to like the MP4 from my Hero 5 as it just won’t import it.
WOW MAN, ive learned more in this 25 min video then all the videos ive watched about gopros over YEARS of shooting. your the man for these videos. thanks. I mainly shoot motorcycle , snowboarding, boating and vacation footage with my friends and family. My new GP8 should be here tomorrow. cant wait to get some footage so I can use all these tips
Fun learning new things. Great job. Well, I am brand new to using a GoPro. I have done a lot of photography with my Nikon and Sony DSLR and iphone but not videos. I will be going to Hawaii and hope to get great footage, especially under water. Do you have any tutorials on underwater filming and editing? Finally, once I have edited, can I upload and share on on google photos or iPhotos?
G'Day there mate, I just sat through both of the tutorial videos and THANK YOU! I am only just getting back into MTB after injury and hospital time forced me out of the sport for a while and am hoping to utilise my GoPro and a couple of other new little video toys. You have really helped me understand so much more of the processes and how to manage the video's colours, so thank you so much for taking the time. As my fitness returns, I'll hopefully be able to create some decent footage of the great trails near me in Australia. Cheers!
Just bought my first GoPro, went for the Hero 7 Black edition. What settings would you recommend for a dark area filled with lasers, music and lights, smoke etcetc?
7:32 actually there are seperate adjsutments for shadows, mid tone, highlights, just lick the third dot above. I use them all from time to time. these are quite different. I use them both. 9:23 before and after: look at the bar above the preview, to the left there is a rectangle click on this, then select version & original in the menu to the right.
Dude, great video series! I recently cut some GoPro footage for a family member. Chances are, they used the auto settings. I can't wait to properly set up their camera and see what can be done in post. Subbed as I will be sticking around. Thanks for the awesome content!
after watching this and playing with iMovie for a minute I'm like blown away at how much better I can get my video's to look. and I knew nothing about setting the camera up to capture colors better before hand. everything I filmed was on auto settings on a fujifilm. like night and day difference. thanks.
Great tutorial. Very informative. I downloaded and tried DaVinci last week. Unfortunately my laptop didn't quite got the muscles for it, so I tried Filmora instead. Cost you a few and maybe not as feature packed as DaVinci. But close enough. But then, due to a Avast update followed by a Windows update, my laptop went blank. Found a fix, which I spend all night last night trying without any luck. So I'll try again tonight. And hopefully I soon will get the chance to try out all the magic I've learned :) Then back to experimenting on camera settings (4k or 2.7? (less file size, a tad more out of the batteries) Superview or Wide? (maybe cropping 4:3 to 16:9?) Till then, have a good one!
Nice one Ryan. I color-correct about as much as iMovie(!) lets me but might be looking at Resolve for that extra adjustment. There’s gonna be a lot of people now look at their footage and say “y’know, it really DOES look washed out!”
Hi, you will find highlights midtones and shadows in log wheels, log wheels and primary wheels (which you adjusted in this video) work differently. Also you can do a before and after by turning off and on the nodes.
There's one thing I missed here: So you color correct one clip but how would you transfer all the settings over to another clip in the same setting? Like for instance if the camera made the cut, but the action keeps going.
FlowPublican - I use Davinci Resolve on Windows. To copy the grade applied to a clip, click the node, press CTRL + C, then click on the next clip, click the node, then press CTRL + V. If your clip has more than one node, then you need to do it repeat this for each node.
You can right click on the main image in the viewer of a colour corrected scene and "Grab Still". It will put a still image off to the left. When you want to apply the same grading to another scene, just select the scene and right click on the still image and select "Apply Grade".
This video is awesome. I have put those suggestions into practice yesterday and the video I made looks so much better. Just like being there. I found a video on how to color grade with Davinci Resolve 16 and discovered some shortcuts to set all clips to the same settings.
Are you sure they won't skip 16 or 17 versions and go straight to 18? :D This video is going to be up on my desk top for some time as a reference. Thanks!
This changed the way I produce my vlogs! I'm still a ways off from a super quality final product, but this thing brought me into the 21st century. I stopped struggling against Premiere Pro CS6 (and even abandoned Premiere Pro CC) thanks to this video. Quality workflow and such a high quality output. Thanks man!
This is a great video to show people that make those gopro 7 vs 5 or whatever model theyre comparing. They are almost always using the factory settings and of course the newer models will have some of the factory presets looking slightly better than the older models. But this video proves that you can make your Hero 4s or 5s look just as good as the 7 (maybe not the 8) so long as you have the correct settings and tweak your colors in editing!
Got so focused on the lack of contrast in the snow scene until I saw the chair lifts - Oh your riding a bicycle down a ski slope with snow on it! Wow! Love the mellow mood setting music. BTW - you could plug a eGPU into your laptop and that will handle the graphics processing! Also, look at using **"proxies"** - supported by most video editing software -- it will generate a small low quality version of your video. You do all your edits (fast and easy) then at render it will use the original video files to apply your edits with NO loss of quality. Proxies are the cheapest way (free) to get more out of your existing hardware.
Thanks for that Ryan, one hell of a video, looking forward to trying it out. What spec is your laptop? Need something grunty for 4K right? Good luck making your channel full time, sure a Summer of riding will up the likes and subscribers. Churr from New Zealand 🇳🇿

Good to hear! Thanks for subscribing!
My words cannot describe how grateful I am for your videos, especially this one! Thank you!!!!!!!!! I wish I could give you a hug!
Wow, these two videos have been very informative. Thanks!
Excellent guide! I've just gone back and graded a previous edit, what a difference. My edits moving forward will be so much better. Cheers :)
Good suggestions! Thanks for the feedback 👌🏼

Awesome! I hope it goes well for you.
I just got my first GoPro for motorcycle vlogging and I am LOVING your videos thank you!
Thankyou for this man, this and the previous video are exactly what I was hoping to find. You kick arse!
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out.
Thanks so much! I film a handful of extreme sport progression/some tutorials and I am going to be investing in a new GoPro soon to be able to bring out my shots more vibrantly and add professionalism. This has been a great and simple tutorial that makes it seem not too daunting to get more involved in my shots!
Good to hear! All the best with the upcoming vids 👍🏼
@@TheLoamRanger Thanks again!
Nice!! Is there a way to copy and paste your settings from one clip to the next? In case you have multiple clips from the same location.
Pat Drumm with resolve yes
Man, the difference it makes is huge! Thank you. I thought you had to apply the grade manually to each clip, then discovered if you've got clips from the same lighting area you can use '='and '-' as shortcuts to apply same grade used in previous and 2 previous clips ago.
Thank you so much for posting these two videos, I’ve learnt so much from them. Now I’m looking forward to getting out there and putting it all together. Again, thank you so much 👍
You bet! Good to hear it's been helpful.
G'Day there mate,
I just sat through both of the tutorial videos and THANK YOU!
The don’t be in the dark setting
7:32 actually there are seperate adjsutments for shadows, mid tone, highlights, just lick the third dot above. I use them all from time to time. these are quite different. I use them both.
9:23 before and after: look at the bar above the preview, to the left there is a rectangle click on this, then select version & original in the menu to the right.
Excellent content... I've been looking for something better than GoPro Quick to edit
Dude, great video series! I recently cut some GoPro footage for a family member. Chances are, they used the auto settings. I can't wait to properly set up their camera and see what can be done in post. Subbed as I will be sticking around. Thanks for the awesome content!
Sir, you just earned yourself another SUB 🙌🤠 cheers!
Nice! Thanks for subscribing!
@@TheLoamRanger same here
after watching this and playing with iMovie for a minute I'm like blown away at how much better I can get my video's to look. and I knew nothing about setting the camera up to capture colors better before hand. everything I filmed was on auto settings on a fujifilm. like night and day difference. thanks.
Playing those clips at the end of the video would be nice :D
Stumbled over this looking for something else. Had no idea about DaVinci, so Huge Thank You for that. The rest? Simply Brilliant. Thank you!
Damn... we're ALL gettin' schooled over here.... 🤔
(Except for maybe TrailFeatures 😂)
This is the kind of video I have been searching throughout my life ....Thannnk uuuuu.. loved it
Great tutorial. And hopefully I soon will get the chance to try out all the magic I've learned :)
Then back to experimenting on camera settings (4k or 2.7? (less file size, a tad more out of the batteries) Superview or Wide? (maybe cropping 4:3 to 16:9?)
Till then, have a good one!
It's always good to try new settings! Hope your computer fires back up soon.
The Loam Ranger Yeah. I'll try again tonight. So hope it'll will. Or it's a reason to get a new computer ;)
On the Trail did you download 14 or 15? I hear 15 is built to run much faster on slower systems. Maybe give that a try!
I'm not sure. I guess it was 15. Just grabbed it from their homepage.
Thank you! Best video on camera settings and editing I have seen. Editing takes so long and is so confusing, this will help a bunch.
Nice one Ryan. I color-correct about as much as iMovie(!) lets me but might be looking at Resolve for that extra adjustment.
There’s gonna be a lot of people now look at their footage and say “y’know, it really DOES look washed out!”
Haha oops?
resolve is free mate
Very cool and useful, I've watched many tuts and tips but this one really tops them all so far. Simple and yet so effective. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
litteraly, in the moment when I pressed subscribe...you stopped video, took a breath and said: "before we go any further"

Good question! You can either make nodes, or you can do it the noob way and just copy paste the adjustments, like I do 😂
The Loam Ranger so there's no "right click, copy visual effects, paste all effects" like in other programs? Maybe in the update... 😉
FlowPublican I'm sure there is! But I have no idea haha
Thanks dude! Really wish I could edit like you Ryan.
Thank you for posting these two videos. We’re now using GoPros for our local tv station and you have been a great help!
Are you sure they won't skip 16 or 17 versions and go straight to 18? :D This video is going to be up on my desk top for some time as a reference. Thanks!
Haha I wouldn't be surprised. Glad you found it helpful man!
Thanks man!
That’s awesome! Glad it’s been helpful.
I knew it was davinici resolve.... Lmao great tutorial! 10/10 color grading
Alex G is that program free or what one do I get to just do what he did
@@sxsmarine4075 Don't get DaVinci Resolve Studio just the regular one
This is a great video to show people that make those gopro 7 vs 5 or whatever model theyre comparing. They are almost always using the factory settings and of course the newer models will have some of the factory presets looking slightly better than the older models. But this video proves that you can make your Hero 4s or 5s look just as good as the 7 (maybe not the 8) so long as you have the correct settings and tweak your colors in editing!
Just found your channel...You my friend made that look amazingly easy!! Good job, Sub'D

Cheers Michael! It's a quad-core MacBook Pro with 16 gig ram. It just barely does the job :)
Is this indeed the minimum needed to do this post-prod color editing? My laptop literally crapped out and it's time for me to buy a new one. @@TheLoamRanger
Excellent video, I like your style of explaining what you are doing while at the same time not wasting time on useless info , keep up the good work
Thank you! Glad you found it to be worth the watch.
GoPro Hero 7 is here 🙃🙃
And it's crap
Thanks for the info, I have a hero 11 and watched your video on how to set it up. I copied your settings, and it has captured some amazing footage. Now to figure out how to edit it all.
Man, you should start a udemy course on this topic as another passive income stream. You’re really good at it. And I think you’ve got a lot more knowledge to share. Good work!
Well, I kind of did just that :D www.myillumi.com
Man, you are right. The end result is just amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing. Im just about to go pick up my new GoPro 7 Black and now downloaded DaVinchi Resolve. Cant wait to check it out! Thanks alot!! Keep up the videos, so clear and easy to follow. Good job!
Best picture quality video on the internet. Well done sir.
