For real, could have been a much deeper film. Ironically, in that alternate timeline, I imagine the film would have faded into obscurity in the late 80s and become almost forgotten in the 90s... until becoming very relevant again in late 2001, assuming the movie ends the same way the short story did. Spoiler alert for a 43 year old Bachman (Stephen King pseudonym) short story: A man hijacking a plane, killing the flight crew, and intentionally crashing into a busy tower to kill corrupt individuals on a suicide mission might have been a noble and heroic ending in a mid 80s action flick, but it might have aged... poorly.
I liked the book better. The POS stepfather I had had a pile of sci-fi, action adventure, and other “hero” books. I went through them all. Running man was one of them. He was a POS, but it taught me a lot. Yes, TAUGHT. It taught me that you can never trust an establishment.
The Christopher Reeve version would have followed the original King story. It was a game show where the contestant (Ben Richards) volunteered to be a fugitive (declared an enemy of the state) , and the longer he remained free he would accumulate money that would go to his next of kin ($100 per hour and $100 for any authority and game hitman he kills). If he survived 30 days he get $1 billion. He was given a head start and a camera which he has to record two messages a day and mail them in to the show or he has violated the rules and stops accumulating money. He could go anywhere in world, but anyone who saw him could call in on the shows number to report seeing him for a reward for turning him in and send the hitman squad to get him.
Although I would be interested in watching the Christopher Reeve version, I love the movie the way it is. Also, I've seen enough Christopher Reeve to know his movies don't really get that violent. I would be interested in seeing the version with him IF the movie really pushed his character to the brink where he has to "get dirty" to survive. Not so much for an action flick payoff, but to show a mildly wholesome character that got pushed to do thee most violent deeds, absolutely NOT part of his character, because that's the limit they've pushed him to, or that he has accepted understanding that's the only way to survive. Kinda like the football team whose plane crashed in the Andies. By the end they got used to the act of carving up _PEOPLE_ and eating them to survive. They weren't any kind of violent sociopaths, most likely some family men/women, pushed by circumstances to do thee most revolting, abhorrent, actions they never in a million years thought they would ever do in a thousand lifetimes.
@@cliffcorson4000 Given how it portrays the cynicism and insincerity of the media, working hand-in-hand with government to control what people see, in order to influence what they believe... While the overall feel is a bit low-budget, there are so many classic moments that emphasise the fakeness, and how people within the system, behind the scenes, rail against it for it's fakeness (Jesse Ventura scene). Is Dynamo also the leader of "the baldies" in the movie The Wanderers?
So the original story was going to follow the book. I would have liked to have seen that version. The novella was disturbingly believable.
I loved this movie as a kid, I was like the audience, cheering at the various TV personalities trying to kill Arnold 😅
