I think he said ‘Goombatz’. That way it’s a portmanteau of ‘Goomba’ and ‘oobatz’. The first is a pejorative word for an Italian, and the second is Italian American slang for “crazy“.

Rodney Dangerfield and Johnny Carson were both way before my time. But I've watched all the interviews and sets on that show I can find. I'd go out on a limb and say Rodney Dangerfield was probably one of Carson's favorite guests to have on.

This video left out my favorite Rodney doctor joke. He said my doctor asked me for a urine sample, stool sample and a semen sample...so I gave him my underwear and I went home. I told my own doctor that Rodney joke and I never saw him laugh so hard!!

Rodney dangerfield and sam kinison gave us laughter while they were alive and they were beyond great,legends.
The screenplay writers and producer didn't want Kinison originally they thought he was too crude. Believe it or not they were looking at Jim Carrey. But Rodney was having none of that he pushed for Kinison because he liked his talent and thought they would have good chemistry. He was bang on their scenes together were stellar.

In the interviews, he's only fidgety when he tells jokes. Soon as he talks normal, he seems to be fine. Definitely part of his act.
Just shows you how much love and respect Rodney had for Andy Kaufman that, even years after Andy's death, every time Rodney made a joke about his doctor it was always "Doctor Vinnie Boombatz".
