Eddie Murphy says he worked a club as a kid where Rodney was working and he and Rodney used urinals that stood right next to each other. Neither spoke a word. Years later they both worked a different club and the same situation occurred. As Rodney was zipping up he turned to Eddie, shrugged his shoulders and said, "Who knew?"

One of the funniest things Rodney ever said was just before he passed when he said if the heart surgery he was about have was successful he would be out of the hospital in a couple of days but if it wasn't successful he would be out in a couple of hours. He always caught you off guard with his humor. RIP Johnny and Rodney...
I remember that too. His answer to "how long are you going to be in the hospital?" was If things go real well I should be out in a couple weeks, if they go poorly, I'll be out in a couple hours.
Jay Leno said that when Rodney had his debilitating stroke and was in the hospital he went to visit him and Rodneys wife told Jay "He can't respond but he can hear you and he knows you're here... let him hold your finger". So Jay put his finger in Rodneys hand and Rodney squeezed it.... It was then that Jay leaned in and whispered "Rodney... that's not my finger..." He said you could see Rodney visibly shaking he was laughing so hard inside. Funny men are funny men... right to the end.

Fabulous.. Carson played straight man to only three guests that I know of - Rodney, Don Rickles and Joan Rivers. Their brand of ribald comedy will never be seen on talk show TV again.
Rodney was just brilliant. The way he could subtly twist meanings around. His clear, deep baritone voice that just naturally commanded attention. He really was unique.
I think in terms of stand up comedy, he was the funniest, the best. People usually ascribe the GOAT to Richard Pryor, and he was great, but no one was as funny as Rodney. And yup, he still doesn't get no respect.
Johnny Carson will forever be the King of Latenight TV. Smart, quick, respectful, a true professional. And Rodney is just insane, what a great performer!
This is a new one hadn’t seen it before, thank you. When I went to UCLA in the late seventies my roommates and I used to roll around on the floor laughing watching Rodney on Johnny Carson and we weren’t even smoking anything.
He didn't curse or tell jokes at the expense of others by name. Either self-effacing, or his family without naming them. I am pretty sure his family was ok with him referencing them as he did. His ability to catalog and recall hundreds if not thousands of jokes is pure genius and a gift.
What BS...his version of Russian Roulette was so off color no one would tell it today. And no one swore on TV in those days. You make him sound like Doris Day.. But he was funny...
@@gregorywhite9095it is off colour, isn't it? And it paints him in a pretty bad light, doesn't it? That's exactly the joke, he presents himself as a self-pitying, sad, pathetic, loser with embarrassing health problems, and who makes terrible choices. That's the character of Rodney Dangerfield, a bad person who blames everybody else for his problems. That's what makes him funny.
The skill that it takes to be this on-point is remarkable! Unreal how ready he was for JC, which was the biggest show at night. Great to see him so on point and JC so quiet.
My wife and I saw Rodney a the MGM in Vegas 2001. It was non stop jokes one after another. Then he’d stop, and you’d hear a little voice cue (his wife) and off he’d go again. He was the classic one liner.
This was one of Rodney's BEST nights on "The Tonight Show." I really miss him, Johnny, Ed and the rest of the gang on that show when night time talk shows were VERY funny unlike today.
If you think it was easy sitting across from Dangerfield when he was performing… Think again. Johnny Carson knew exactly how to keep time with Rodney and played it perfect every time.
As on fire as Rodney is here, Johnny had me in stitches as well with the way he quietly kept playing along, not to mention every time he busted out laughing. 🤣
When I lived in Vegas on Eastern and Russell, Redd Foxx was my neighbor across the street and became a friend. I also got to see Rodney's last live show at the Tropicana and talked with him after briefly. He had no issue with chatting with folks and was a nice man, as was Redd. 🙏🙏
Redd was also one of a kind. I'm a little too "young" to have heard much of his stand-up but just watch any re-run of 'Sanford & Son'. He brought it home every time...
Rodney can get me rolling on the floor, trying to catch my breath. I really need to quit smoking. LOL. But, the greatest thing about Rodney is that he never loses control with laughter. He is the prime example of the straight man. He was never over the top dirty. Every joke was suggestive, but not disgusting.
Rodney did so much to help up and coming comedians. He gave a chance to Jerry Seinfeld, Rosanne Barr, Louie Anderson, Andrew Dice Clay and soooooo many more the list is endless. Not only was he a comedic genius in the telling of jokes but finding those who are also comedians too.
I'm 64. I miss good comedy, like I remember from the 70's, 80's, and even into the 90's....until ultra political correctness came around. The ones who have it the best now are criminals.
I was living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and was working at a 7-11 about a mile from home. It wasn’t busy that night and in walks Rodney Dangerfield. I was putting up some stock on the shelves and I happened to look up. I tripped onto the floor. I got up and proceeded to launch into my impression of him. He applauded and thanked me for this. He was a very nice person. By the way, he did drink the beer he was a spokesman for. Rodney, we hardly knew you.
Rodney was one of a kind. There’ll never be another. To joke non stop, to have that much material, extraordinary! The way he started the interview then right into stand up or sit down comedy. Truly superior!
the joke about his daughter getting pregnant after eating chicken is one i've never heard before and is now possibly my new favorite Rodney Dangerfield joke.
it has been a bad day I woke up this morning and picked up my shirt and a button fell off picked up my briefcase the handle fell off I am afraid to go to the bathroom...that just had me cracking up...these guys were true entertainers
A great man…..Each and every time I watch these videos I recall a time when we could all share a good joke and not have to worry about someone calling you a racist, sexist, homophobic , misogynist, or any of the other ridiculous things we hear today. Dangerfield was one of a kind. RIP….. I imagine many in heaven sitting around a table listening to Rodney and his friends spread good cheer and laughter.
The legend. You can see how Johnny really was cracking up. I remember being a boy and sneaking out of my bedroom and turning the TV on quietly in our living room to watch Rodney on The Tonight Show on school night. My laughter would wake my mom up and she would tell me to go to bed. The same would happen when Don Rickels was on.
That was the best 10 minutes I've spent in a very long time. I feel alive again. Rodney was the man and Johnny was the King!

Never a dull moment ...
Fabulous..
Carson played straight man to only three guests that I know of - Rodney, Don Rickles and Joan Rivers. Their brand of ribald comedy will never be seen on talk show TV again.
Absolute genius. Comedic timing was the best
Rodney was just brilliant. The way he could subtly twist meanings around. His clear, deep baritone voice that just naturally commanded attention. He really was unique.
What a performance. He was non-stop and Carson couldn't stop laughing
I could have watched hours of this. What legends.
This may well have been Rodney's best material ever! He was, clearly, the funniest comedian ever!
I'm glad the movies finally took notice of him and made some very funny comedies with Rodney.
I think in terms of stand up comedy, he was the funniest, the best. People usually ascribe the GOAT to Richard Pryor, and he was great, but no one was as funny as Rodney. And yup, he still doesn't get no respect.
Although some of those jokes didn't age well
@@22espec I think they'll always be hilarious.
I don't think u aged so well. Ty
I’m so grateful to have seen this when it originally aired.
Johnny Carson and Rodney Dangerfield together?!
Comedy Pure Gold!!
His ability to catalog and recall hundreds if not thousands of jokes is pure genius and a gift.
self-deprecating
What BS...his version of Russian Roulette was so off color no one would tell it today. And no one swore on TV in those days. You make him sound like Doris Day..
But he was funny...
@@gregorywhite9095it is off colour, isn't it? And it paints him in a pretty bad light, doesn't it? That's exactly the joke, he presents himself as a self-pitying, sad, pathetic, loser with embarrassing health problems, and who makes terrible choices. That's the character of Rodney Dangerfield, a bad person who blames everybody else for his problems. That's what makes him funny.
Apparently, he did curse a blue streak in the clubs. Jerry Seinfeld said he felt like it took away from his act.
Heard he didn’t have a healthy relationship with his wife at the time
Definitely my favorite stand-up comedian of all time...a laugh a second with him...no other can duplicate....loved that guy
Yes amazing Classic humor the best! we watched with Dad as kids Love Johnny Carson and Rodney!
The greatest of all time, and nobody else really comes close. Nobody else could do what he did, in the way he did it.
Dangerfield was the best, still has me in stitches watching this clip 40+ years later.
The skill that it takes to be this on-point is remarkable! Unreal how ready he was for JC, which was the biggest show at night. Great to see him so on point and JC so quiet.
Nothing and nobody can hold a candle to the good old days.
Which
The good old days weren't always good. Tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems.
What a performance. He was non-stop and Carson couldn't stop laughing. Making people laugh is a very respectable profession..
Saw Rodney live, I laughed so hard my stomach muscles hurt the next day. Great, great comic!
I saw him front row too back in the early 80s
My wife and I saw Rodney a the MGM in Vegas 2001. It was non stop jokes one after another. Then he’d stop, and you’d hear a little voice cue (his wife) and off he’d go again. He was the classic one liner.
No profanity, just provocative humor.
Man this guy was on fire….
I speak for many people when I say….
We miss him…
On fire?
He musta got the VD girl
This was one of Rodney's BEST nights on "The Tonight Show." I really miss him, Johnny, Ed and the rest of the gang on that show when night time talk shows were VERY funny unlike today.
We were blessed to witness this on our journey of life..... 🙏🏼
@@hblee88 You got that right and well said!
10 out of 10....every time. What a skill
@@boblozaintherealworld3577 Redd's off tv shows were some of the dirtiest shows you could ever see. He made you roar all night.
@@charlesstockford6003 So I've heard.
That's so cool!
You Got to Wash Your Ass...😂 Live Album Red Foxx
Rodney can get me rolling on the floor, trying to catch my breath. I really need to quit smoking. LOL. But, the greatest thing about Rodney is that he never loses control with laughter. He is the prime example of the straight man. He was never over the top dirty. Every joke was suggestive, but not disgusting.
I missed a couple of the jokes because I was laughing too hard about the previous lol. Miss ya Rodney
The facial expressions on Rodney are half the act. Brilliance!
Rodney is a legend, his timing is amazing.
Practically every time Rodney was on the show, he had Johnny cracking up. Icon of comedy!!
johnny knew his role as the host so well. he knew when to be the sidekick and when he needed to be the star.
Yep. When Rodney and Rickels were on, Johnny just let them go wherever they wanted to go. He just tagged along for the ride.
I never get tired of Rodney 😂
I'm 54 and omg how I miss those days! Ed McMahon's laugh in the background was always one of my favorite things!
Some newer material than I've seen on other Carson shows. This is one of Rodney's best performances!
He's a legend at what he does. I could be watching this over and over, and I would still laugh my ass off.
Rodney is "one of a kind "
Imitated but never never duplicated !!
2023...anybody else missing the good ol' days?
Yes! Here in what's left of Britain it's almost a crime to laugh. It's considered some kind of weird racism!
2024 now yes
😮God! And I thought it was bad here in Southern California, where you're afraid to say things others might be offended by.
I'm 64. I miss good comedy, like I remember from the 70's, 80's, and even into the 90's....until ultra political correctness came around. The ones who have it the best now are criminals.
Big time.
I have seen this segment many times, and I still laugh, as if I have heard it for the first time!! Rodney Dangerfield was in a Class all his own!!!
No matter how many times I watch, and listen, to Rodney Dangerfield .. I crack up. But seeing him live at Dangerfield's THE BEST!
At 8:50 Johnny's laughter was so infectious that is made Rodney break character.
Rodney was one of a kind. There’ll never be another. To joke non stop, to have that much material, extraordinary! The way he started the interview then right into stand up or sit down comedy. Truly superior!
We still have to thank Rodney for his stand up, and for maintaining his eye for talent, and giving great comedians like Sam Kinison their big breaks
the joke about his daughter getting pregnant after eating chicken is one i've never heard before and is now possibly my new favorite Rodney Dangerfield joke.
it has been a bad day I woke up this morning and picked up my shirt and a button fell off picked up my briefcase the handle fell off I am afraid to go to the bathroom...that just had me cracking up...these guys were true entertainers
Comics are using that one today.
I heard a few comics say about not going bathroom fear of dickie falling off.
A life well lived... making so many laugh, smile and happy for so long.... well done Rodney 👍
The joke about him punching his wife probably wouldn't go over well today.
The "falling off" joke was the funniest in this clip. Classic comedy from a classic comedian. RIP Jacob Cohen - you are missed.
I died when he said he went to the Opera and she forgot the sandwiches
I had the same experince, late night sneaky TV then perhaps if I was lucky the 2am Kung Fu classic on Saturday?...just a wonderful era
