    Hey Tim, when we mow unknown property we keep the bucket on the front and let the bucket ride right above the ground so if there’s anything the bucket makes contact instead of something important. Might also mitigate the buildup of debris on the radiator. Keep up the good work.

    Tim, it is so fun watching your videos. you have such joy operating your little tractor and using all the attachments. When I'm watching you tackle a new job I can't help but hear Alan Jackson's "Little Bitty" playing in the background. What is funnier is that to the big farmers, my 100 HP JD is little bitty. It's all about perspective. Keep up the great work!

    I find mowing very satisfying especially in the tall stuff. It’s also good to see someone doing the job right like going all the way in the grass.

    Couple of my experience tips. Always "mow" unknown properties with the FEL attached. You can use it to push the brush down ahead of the tractor and find hidden obstacles. Also when you find the one hole that is wet and you get stuck, you are able to push yourself out. 2nd pro tip, carry a hand held leaf blower to blow your grills and radiators out. Makes the process much quicker. I use mine constantly when brush hogging. I have Johnny's bigger brother a 4066r with cab. My a/c gets weak before the temp climbs when brush hogging.

    Very good video Tim.
    As others have said, I too leave the FEL w/bucket on for unfamiliar ground, but if I'm mowing our areas that I know I prefer the HH weight bracket as well for better visibility.

    This video was very informative. Wow, that was quite a jungle you cut through. I can see where a larger tractor would be an advantage in a situation like that.
    Our current house had been vacant for several years before we moved in, so the yard was in need of a lot of work. The previous owners left us a Sears Craftsman riding mower. It did an ok job, but there were spots that it could not go through due to tall, thick grass and some reed-like plants. In addition to that, the mower had a real rough ride. Fortunately for me, the guy mowing our neighbors yard took pity on me and mowed about an acre of the tall stuff for us as a “Housewarming” present! He has one of the Kubota “L” series tractors with a brush hog. It made short work of that area.
    Once that patch was cut down, I tried it again with the Rider mower and found a hidden rock garden that was made by the kids of the previous owner. That cost me a set of blades. I ended up taking two loads of rocks out of the field to clear it. I now have a tow behind DR “Field and Brush” mower that works pretty good. I tow it behind My Polaris Ranger, which has suspension and the ride is much more comfortable now…:)
    I am still on my quest to get a tractor of my own and I am told by the “Boss” that we are just a few months away from making that dream come true!

    Hi Tim! The last time I had a project similar to this, I use the FEL on the front to Tamp down the grass in front of me for two reasons... The first being to discover any unknowns in the brush. My Hope was that I would come to a stop with the bucket before I would do any damage to the mid-mount should there be a rock or obstacle that I didn't see in front of me. The second was that it made the mowing a little easier having the grass lay down before it was cut. Just a thought, it definitely helped in that project for me maybe it would for you on a future project like this. Also, I found just shutting the mower off, the dandelion debris and clutter on the front vent just fell away because there was no longer no suction on it. Keep the great videos coming!

    Looks like that machine works well. I always wondered how a sub compact would work with such a short ground clearance. I mowed my grandfathers small fields which hadn't been mowed in over 10 years. I had a lot of brush brambles and thick patches of saplings taking over. My only tractor at the time I still have because it's earned it's keep and that is a 1982 John Deere 650 which has a 2cyl 16hp diesel. It's also got more ground clearance than most sub compacts. So I mowed that field in 4x4 with the diff locked and it worked great. I have a Woods M4 brush hog that came with the tractor when I bought it. The 650 holds 6gallons of diesel which is enough for about 8hrs or so. It really worked great. I wish it had as much power as your "Johnny" but it holds its own!

      The JD650 and several others were build to John Deere standards for sale primarily in the states by a Japanese company called Yanmar. They build a good product. You will find a lot of their diesel engines in marine craft today.

    • @1944johndeerel
      @1944johndeerel 7 лет назад +1

      Coy Patton true but a lot of their machines including the 650 and the 790 I own were built and assembled in Japan by yanmar then imported here. They are very nice machines. I would say the 50 series seem tougher and built heavier then the later 70 series

    • @coypatton3160
      @coypatton3160 7 лет назад +2

      1944johndeerel I would not disagree with that view that later models even in the 50 series were not built as strong as the early models. I think Deere lowered the standards the machines were to built to. I know several people who have Yanmar gray market tractors These are built like tanks almost after you get above the smaller units in the 16-18 hp range.

    I have done a lot of brush hogging in my time. You need a 40-60 horse tractor and a mesh grade on the roll bar so your face or head doesnt eat a giant splinter or rock . Nice vid A 10ft brush hog works for what you are doing, 50 to 200 acres get a 15ft batwing

    Good Video Tim. I was impressed how well the bush hog cut the tall stuff in the beginning also I agree it does a better job than the mid mount mower on the corn stalks. I like that you explained about the (rake) the front of the bush hog being lower than than the rear when mowing A lot of people don't realize you should always put a slight rake front to back on all mower decks we set up our machines to have 1/16" to 1/4" of rake most mowers will cut better with a little rake in the deck

    Running into unknown junk is what I worry about when mowing someone else's property, but I don't do that any more. One woman told me her property was clear and I found a block of concrete which held up old houses, an air conditioner which was close to the back of her house, and many other items which slowed me down.
    For the quick hitch you have there is an attachment which will allow you to connect up to the mower deck easier. I have one which I purchased, but only need it with my box blade as everything else is easy to attach using the quick hitch.

    Tim, that mower might be quick hitch acceptable, but I think it requires a different adapter that mounts on the top link hole and extends out so that the hook can reach. Might look into it. It might look like a squared "U" shape that has a couple of holes. One at the open end for the hook, a hole at the closed end to hook to the top link hole. It would also allow the mower to move freely over mounds. Or it could be built by a metal fab company.

      +Drew6709 that new hook makes it work beautifully. Also, those mower has a built in flex point for 'mounds' as you call them.

    Been there, done that on a lot bigger tractor than your Johnny. Cleaning out the grill can be a nuisance but you have to do it. On the farm I used an 8 foot bush hog on a 7740 Ford. Since the hog had a stump jumper on it and had massive blades, I did not care what I ran over with it. I could cut down three inch trees with it. The tractor would push them over and the hog would shatter what was left. Trees would not come back from this cutting. Your bush hog is actually a rotary mower. The manufacturer may call it a bush hog but it is a rotary mower. Just wait until you get your Johnny stuck with the mower on the back. They are almost impossible to get unstuck with all that weight on the back. Something I always did was throw a chainsaw on the deck of my mower or up on the tractor with me because you always seem to need one when cutting.

  • @JohnnyRebKy
    @JohnnyRebKy 7 лет назад +2

    I totally agree about better rig for bush hogging. Its good to be able to see over the top of what your cutting rather than being eye level with it as on the 1025R. I would suggest leaving your loader on to use as a shield and also use it to lay the grass down and detect that hidden large rock or log in there before you run it over. Prob wont happen to you but one time I fell into a sink hole while bush hogging a 50 acre field ( Kentucky lots of underground caverns that cave in). 4wd couldn't get me out and had to call for help. If id had my loader on I could have used it for leverage and pushed myself out with it. Of course that was in a large Kubota cab tractor with a batwing mower behind me. I haven't bush hogged with my 1025R yet but I will definitely be bringing the loader along if I do. A set of " hands" in front of you can be very helpful when you cant see whats coming.
    A good Bush Hog tractor is the trusty Ford 3000 Diesel. Big enough to see over most brush, grass ect. Small enough to transport fairly easily. 40hp of Diesel power will chop down anything you put it into. easy on fuel too....I think the high RPM of the 1025R burns more fuel than the larger stroked Ford engine that made its power at much lower RPM. I made a lot of money with that old Ford 3000....even had a name " old Roy". Roy was a good one...Wish I had him back

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 лет назад +1

      I'm actually very pleased with the 1025r fuel consumption. Even at full throttle, I believe mine uses 3/4 gal/hr or so. Hard to complain about that.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 лет назад +1

      I've driven a Ford 2000 gas and 3000 diesel. Nice old rigs. Still, for mowing, and most field work, I'd like to be up a bit higher, a bit further from the 'action' so to speak.

    • @JohnnyRebKy
      @JohnnyRebKy 7 лет назад

      absolutely. I thought you were speaking in the context of doing more urban cutting like most your videos. Out on the farm you can never get to high or to far from the action lol. Most folks wont let a big cab rig with a batwing in their yard though lol. Fuel consumption......im just barely over 50 hours on mine. Not even broken in yet according to the book. It seems the more I run it the better it gets or maybe its all in my head. I did go ahead and change oil.....I think JD directions to change break in at 100 hours is a stretch. I got the Yanmar engine manual from Yanmar and it says to change the oil at 50 hours. I decided to trust the engine manufacturer over the owners manual lol

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 лет назад +1

      Never hurts to Change the oil in my opinion. Deere wants you to use break in oil for first 100 hrs. I just changed at 75...to normal oil. Then changed again at 200.
      I agree that the documentation is not clear on initial oil change.

    Hi Tim, Have watched your videos with you using the brush hog. I just bought a new 2025R and need to get a brush hog, I was thinking of getting the 5ft version because the 2025r is just a little wider than the 1025R. I'm clearing about a 1/2 acre of land, and its covered with vines with thorns on them. My thought is to mow in revers and the 5ft brush hog would clear a wider bath so the thorns don't scrape the side of the tractor. I'm sure i'll get some, but this would minimize it. After the first pass i would only take 1/2 or 3/4 of the with of the brush hog. Do you think the tractor would be able to handle it? Doesn't sound like your tractor is working to hard at 5:40 in the video, and i'd probable wont be cutting anything that tall or thick. Thanks!

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, it will handle the 5' mower...assuming it can lift it.
      I'm not thrilled with your idea of mowing in reverse. This is somewhat dangerous, as large items get thrown out the front of the mower instead of the rear of the mower.
      I mow in reverse ONLY in situations where I cannot effectively go forward.
      Had a neighbor get impaled with a piece of steel (through the seatback and through his chest). He lived...but wow.
      So, I don't make a habit of going in reverse.

    • @mark31383
      @mark31383 6 лет назад

      @@TractorTimewithTim Lifting shouldn't be an issue, the 2025R is rated for 1000lbs on the hitch. Maybe I wont mow in reverse then. Thanks for the input!

    I’m curious as to why you wouldn’t run the FEL while brush hogging? I did some brush hogging a few years back with a kubota and had a blade on the front. It really kept the debris down from collecting on the grill.

      Maybe I should have. thought about it, but I like having the better visibility. In this case, the decision was made before I saw the field to be mowed. I would likely have used the loader had I known how grown up it was.
      BTW, did you watch far enough to see that we had the loader on for the corn stalk mowing?

    Tim, if the finance committee would approve the purchase. A flail mower. I have a 6' flail and sold my 20 yr old rotary mower. Rotary mowers have their place as do flail mowers. But both have their maintenance budgets. A flail will be more expensive to buy & operate as well as heavier. But will leave a better result of discharged grass than a rotary.

    Tim, I probably would've move inward 6-10' and then come back to do the detail edge work. Sure it adds time, but backing in can sometimes be better. But as an operator, I try to think of how much work vs cost to client's pocketbook. I have several clients on fixed income. How much do i do that the client can afford?

    You should leave the loader on the front of your tractor so you can push the grass over and so if you hit anything just your bucket will hit not the front of your tractor

    Hey Tim, just curious how large this area was and how long it took to get it mowed? I have a similar setup to yours. I have a1023e and a Frontier 4' cutter. I had someone ask me about mowing a 13 acre pasture. I had no idea how long it would take so I passed on the job. I know a larger machine would be ideal but I was trying to estimate how long it would take me to get over that much area.
