You're right that's every little boys dream is to be able to play with equipment and move dirt. The troubling part is at what point did we grow up ? It shouldn't be considered a job if the Lord lets you wake up, gives you the health, and the means to do something. I have to keep reminding myself of that.
Yep, you’re living the dream of moving dirt and we’re living the dream thru you and Christy. Of course Vinny does a.great job smoothing and leveling as always. Blessings.
In my opinion the reason for a heavier machine is the packing effect every time the machine runs over the fill dirt. Personally I would spread say a foot of dirt then pack it, followed by another foot. It's very hard to pack 3 to 4 foot of dirt all at once. Given the way the dirt was dumped you did fine! Love you all videos!! VENTRAC is the most versatile machine ever made!
You guys do such a great job describing and showing everything on your videos. You should consider about doing a tractor class or something like that for new tractor owners. Another thing I enjoy, you don't do videos to get attention or try to "push" to get viewers by crazy video titles or themes. Like some of the other landscaping and lawn care channels I watch. You pull in viewers by trying to make the videos about their interests or showing them how to do things. That's why I enjoy your channel so much as well from Neil Koch, and Mike Morgan. The three of you guys do a great job at your channels.
I have had a few Deere tractors, but have a Kioti now. but If I could afford a Ventrac, I would get one tomorrow. The rake on this video and the flail mower from the other day, really make me want one.
Hey Mr. Tim I just finished doing the same thing the passed 3 days I loaded with and spread out my trailer loads with a little 2305 ( Great little tractor ) and pulled the dump trailer with my 50 year old 2120 John Deere . Was a fun few days , now it's on to hauling and piling firewood . Be safe
Remember Tim, The tractor loader is designed to lift and carry. Tractors in general are not designed to push like a dozer. I moved 3 tri-axle loads with my 1025 R. It did it, it may not have been happy doing it at times. When I was finished moving the top soil, I did a full service on the 1025R. All fluids and filters. I pushed the tractor to its limits and I was nearing the hours for service anyway.
I own a 2032r and love it. Done alot of work with it but a few times I wish it was bigger. I would have used a box blade with the bucket seems to work we'll moving dirt. That ventrac is a impressive machine! Keep up the good work.
Great work Tim, the Ventrac sure is a handy piece of equipment. Keep up the good work. I just want to make you aware that someone claiming to be you sent me a reply to my comment on your "FIRST Mowing! 10' Flexwing, 46 Horsepower Tractor, Heavy Fescue, Small Trees!" video that said I had won a gift of a John Deere tractor.
My Machinery wish list is shaping up!! Farmall Cub, John Deere 2020, John Deere 4066R, Toro 5910, Ventrac 4520, JCB 18Z, Hudson Brute Circle and all the supporting attachments for them all. The jobs are micro farming, micro cattle, firewood and lots of grass to mow at multiple locations.
That was a LOT of dirt. You're right - certainly my dream! I can tell you though, my wife's nightmare! I had some dirt dropped off at our house by PennDot when they were cleaning ditches - my wife was not a happy camper. :)
I've moved a crazy amount of dirt from one place to another on my property using my Kubota L3902 and the difference a tooth bar makes is night and day.
Yes a track loader would be faster but so would a Cat 953 Bulldozer. This Tractor has done the job very well. Be Thankful you didn’t have to do it with a shovel and wheelbarrow. I know firsthand transporting a skid steer is tough.
The larger 3R tractor would have made the job go faster, but you just proved it could be done with a smaller tractor and get the same results. The power rake is awesome and a must have when grading! Great job y’all! We’ll see ya on the next one…Go Heels!
That power rake has got to be the most useful tool I have seen, in the landscaping dept. I see Dirt Perfect has one on his skid steer, and it as well is an awesome addition, to his fleet.
Hello Tim and Kristie, Maybe you could put a sticker somewhere on Vinnie to remind you to turn on the weight transfer lever. Love the videos. Keep up the good work, and God bless and stay safe and be kind.
Should've had a box blade on. I've done many final grades on big custom homes with a l2800 kubota and moved quite a bit of dirt with that set up and it was geared tractor. Worked great. Vinnie did great with the rake.
It would be interesting to see a 3pt power rake on the next episode from this job. See how well the 2038r does as the all in one. Moving the dirt and finishing it.
Although you have three tractors plus Vinny, not eveyone has access to so many tractors if they are just homeowners. You did a good job of showing the advantages of the tractor you were using and what changes you would have made for the job you were doing. I have a 2008 CaseIH 24DXe subcompact tractor. It's major problem is it is too light for the work I've tried to do with it. As time has gone by, the amount of work I need it to do becomes less and less. Next year, I'll have a guy come in with his larger tractor and disc so he can level my yard. This will allow me to flood irrigate my pecan trees in a much more efficient manner. When he did my neighbors place, it only cost about $200.
When pushing with a loader, build yourself an even, stable "road". Then use a quarter of a bucket and work over gently. If it is easy pushing, take more. If it is too hard, take less of a bucket width. The flat path will help you from digging "steps".
I am very surprised the owner’s didn’t want you to install stone for a French drain around the building leaving 6-12 inches of soil at the top over landscape fabric….very nice team work!! Tom
My favorite type of projects, playing in the dirt. 😆 Loved the video. Looked like really fun project. I was reaching for a keyboard when you said 12 truckloads knowing that’s around 200 ton, and you were setting on Johnny 2. 😝 lol. I swore you were talking to me when said your probably wondering why I brought this tractor. 😂 lol I would have brought Johnny 5, if someone told me I was wanting to move 200 ton of dirt. I totally understood, once you explained it and I grasp the project once saw Vinny there too. I imagine Vinny and Johnny 5 are too large to fit on the trailer at the same time. Plus having R1s on the front of your Johnny 5 would no doubt rip up some lawn, visibility working up that close to a structure would have changed my mind too. That whine is why I bought my tractor with a shuttle shift transmission. That whine will cause hearing loss very quickly. A shuttle shift is less tiring to operate, I set my throttle speed and proper gear, then switch forward and back without touching the throttle; just barely using the brake pedal before each direction change. Shuttle shift is faster than hydrostat machinery
Tim, make a label sign to remind yourself to "check weight transfer" on Vinny. In my neck of the woods, almost all basements are treated on the outside with a water preventer, so water won't come into the house. When young, asphalt was painted onto the cement to keep the water from coming in; later on a type of paint was used. What do they use in your area?
Looking good 👍, you got a long way to go, where is your rear blade, well maybe the ventrac will do a better job... will wait for the last step.... 👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏💪💪
You move 12 truck loads of dirt one bucket at a time, lol. Nice video Tim & Christi thanks for posting.
So i've used vintage hydrostatics without the whine. Why haven't they engineered it out of the newer compact tractors? I'd almost prefer something with gears just to avoid it.
It's nice to see you show what is possible for those who have the smaller equipment. Instead of going all "Tim the Toolman Taylor"( insert caveman grunts here) Big is good bigger must be better.
Tim now that you have a 3R is there a need for a 2R tractor? I guy on one of the 3R tractor forums recently changed his hydro fluid and used Amsoil hydro fluid and said it seriously reduced the wine in his transmission. Another good video. Thanks for sharing.
I would be curious to see how moving the dirt worked without all that 3pt weight. I've moved crushed concrete piles with no weight in/on my tires and a 650ish lb box blade on the tractor.
Now that you have a little time with the MSL loader on the new 2R, I would be interested in your thoughts on the performance as compared to the NSL loader on the last 2038R. I know you had mixed feelings about the MSL on the 1 series.
Hey Tim, your rears on the 2038 look a little low on pressure. Is that just the way those hybrid tires look under a load? Also I noticed that the 2038R would not spin the tires or kill the tractor before the hydro went into relief. The 3R series must have a different hydro setup as it will kill the tractor in low range before it will go in relief.
From a business point of view a bigger tractor probably would be better, but from a playing in the sandbox point of view the smaller the tractor the longer the fun lasts..
I am new to the tractor world but I will be purchasing one sooner than later; most likely one of this size if not a bit bigger. My question is will/would a tooth style front bucket be more advantageous to digging be it dirt or stone? It would appear that way..
I’m a new owner/operator of a 1723eb I’ve ran equipment before but not with selectable 4x4 I’m doing projects that require more traction but not all the time…but I’d be taking it in and out of 4x4 about 40 times a day…I’m worried with the wieght of the backhoe and the load I’m carrying with the front loader that I’m hurting my differentials I’m on dirt dry and packed…I just need the 4x4 to dig into the pile of debris from yard wast garbage and a burned out camper then loading it into a 40yard roll off using double stacked 2x6 ramps to drive up and into the roll off….I know with the derbie rake on my front loader that I’m pushing the limits of the unit but it’s not going to do this forever just this project for a family member…I’m just wondering because like I said I’ve ran equipment including 4x4 backhoes and front loaders always in 4x4….well the loader are hydraulic
@@5075E no doubt! A new 3032E with FEL bucket and bush hog / rotary cutter cost me right at $20k in early 2018. I've been afraid to price a 3046R, which I think my next tractor will be, whenever that happens. (I used to say my next one would be a 4 series, but that might be getting too far up there money-wise.)
Good question! I would likely use bucket, then till, then drag, or use soil pulverizer. I have shown that approach early on in our videos. “Leveling the playing field” back yard soccer field leveling.
Just curious, with that amount of material and all of the room in the world to operate, why didn't you use Johnny 5 or Johnny 3? I watched about 10 seconds of your video and asked my question. You did answer it later in the vid but I would have prepped the 5 or 3. I love Vinny, would love one, even with just the rake. With that much fill going in, did you compact the soil after each 12" or so?
Great moving all that material. Question - am I the only one thinking they're going to have pretty severe settling? Piling up the dirt like that without compacting in short lifts seems to be a recipe for a lot of settling. Or is this going to be a multi-year project to allow for that settling to occur prior to getting up to final grade?
Did you dump the 5-series when you got the 3? I imagine, or rather, I know from experience that the back and forth loader work is much more taxing when you're using a clutch and shifting a transmission, even with the much higher capacity of the loader.
Man! A big difference! Right tools:right operator. Makes me wanta get on a loader and move dirt! Looks so easy when you do it

Unless you violently bounce your front axle with load, I don’t think you’ll have front axle issues.
Sounds like the 'E' means economy, but what would 'R' stand for? Make a label for Vinny's dash to remind you about the weight transfer :)
Real expensive.
If you didn't have Vinnie, what would you use? Box blade? Land Plane?
Good question! I would likely use bucket, then till, then drag, or use soil pulverizer. I have shown that approach early on in our videos. “Leveling the playing field” back yard soccer field leveling.
i realise its not a very popular opinion but its mine 😀
faster is not necessarily better and often is much more stressful
Front end loader, Imagine that.
I concur the slab needs to be built out to level at the end of garage pad other wise in bad weather they will be over the bank and calling a wrecker
Not room for the 5z. Would have been very awkward.
There will be some settling. But doing this in multiple steps will help. Good rains in between should help.
Looks to be you got a front left side almost low tire
Did you dump the 5-series when you got the 3? I imagine, or rather, I know from experience that the back and forth loader work is much more taxing when you're using a clutch and shifting a transmission, even with the much higher capacity of the loader.
We still have the 5. Too large and unhandy for this project.
The R stands for racing right Tim??
I’m thinking in terms of stability
