The story was rushed trash, made a mockery of Norse mythology, retconned characters for the sake of “diversity”, turned a cool female character into a Mary Sue, and the entire premise is about how masculinity is toxic. Don’t believe me? Just read the lead narrative’s Tweets.
Now that these tropes have become comically indefensible and people aren’t having it anymore, the best we can hope for is the devs wake-up.
Loki spin-off would be dumb. They should make two more Kratos games and then Loki comes back jacked and a badass instead of a whiny bitch.

@@whitelivesmatter7709 Listen, I believe the path that the Santa Monica studios have chosen is way better, than this "childish" gaming style of just killing everybody without cause. Here they have focused more on Kratos and how he evolved as a Person, and that he learned from his failures and tries not to repeat them or pass them on to his child. If you prefer the old versions than just play them, God of War would've been very boring if he just did the same thing over and over again in different pantheons.

  • @EmpressGemini

Actually the murals in the first game and in Ironwood, are depicting Kratos death. If you go back and look at the very last panel of Kratos mural at the end of the game, you can see the the previous "prophecy" of Kratos' death, was painted over; With the image of Kratos being worshipped.
I think the moment that Kratos tells Aretus to "open you heart to it", is what made everything change. Letting Aretus know that his ability to show empathy to those who are suffering around him, IS what makes him different than the other GODs in that realm. And the key reason why Kratos made the choice to stop fighting THOR. Instead of fighting him to his death, Like in the mural in Ironwood.
He decided to be empathetic to Thor. Because, He was broken just like how Kratos was in greece. As well as being viewed as a destroyer.
The moments when Aretus and Kratos motivations for fighting in the war changed, that when everything changed in the murals.

The choice between destroying the mask and using it are clearly laid out just before Atreus makes his choice. I feel like GOW Ragnarok made more hints towards Celtic/ English Mythology than any other, mainly based on Mimir mentioning his homeland so much. Compared to the other lands it would arguably be closer to the Norse Realm and given Norse/ Viking culture clashing with the UK it makes sense that maybe that’s where Atreus would look first. I think maybe there were two references to Egypt in GOW 2018 but Mimir spent plenty of time talking about his homeland’s lore that, to me at least, it makes the most sense for that to be the next location, with us eventually making our way to Egypt.

When Kratos killed Heimdall his body didn’t disintegrate at all and just remained there lifeless on the floor, same as Baldur in the 2018 version and all the other gods Kratos killed in the Greek pantheon. Could it be that Thor’s act of defiance to Odin and standing up for his family was the redemption needed to cross into the higher plane of existence? If that is the case he can come back in a spin-off and guide Thrud through her adventures and missions. Would be one hell of a call back to the original series and what they did with Athena since she technically appeared in 2018 even though it was all in Kratos’ head

They mentioned they want 4 more games at least. A loki spinoff could introduce us to the reason why they need to explore other mythologies. Then they could do 3 games in different worlds. That would be my bet. I would love a game with hindu religion (14 different realms), one with scandinavian mythology and maybe a game set in egypt or japan. The thing with the rift closed by the mask would already be a buidup for this.

I feel like I‘m the only one here, but I wish this sequel never happened. To me the first game was drastically better, much more grounded and mature. Odin and Thor still had that menacing mystique surrounding them, Freya‘s threats felt sincere and powerful and they didn‘t feel like a comedic hunting game like in the second game and most importantly Kratos‘ death on the wall was just such a powerful scene and it left the players wondering and fearing. His story came full circle in GoW 2018 and his final speech to Atreus carried the power of all God of War games since 2005. I feel Ragnarok trivialized a lot of things, even the war itself. But that‘s just me.
Edit: No wonder I felt weird about the game. A completely different director made it. It was his first game ever. Of course he wasn’t gonna capture the spirit of the literal creator of Kratos.

Several of the artifacts and treasures you find in the game speak of "relics" like the kind you use in the game for magic that are coming from the East and South, describing that they are powerful if used correctly. Almost hinting at the next game and the pantheons we'll get to see. The treasure relic you find from the South speaks of the Mayan Gods and how "Fair and Just" they are, but powerful as well. My theory is this, next game they are setting it up for us to go back home, but in that process we'll go through parts of Eastern mythology (Egypt/Arab), Southern Mythology (Mayan), perhaps Asia although I feel like two pantheons is big enough, but i guess we'll all have to wait and see what the plan is

Finished and really enjoyed the game, but one small thing is bugging me
At the end of Ragnarok when Angrboda shows up to save the day, the way the scene is shot it makes it look like Atreus is pushing Kratos into the realm tear but Atreus doesn't make it in as there is a flash of white light. We then see Kratos running calling out for Atreus which made me further believe that Atreus didn't make it out of Asgard. But then Atreus wakes up in the Holt and everything is fine and we never get an explanation of how Atreus got out. Mimir mentions that Atreus gave them a scare but I didn't notice anything else that explained his escape. I guess he also escaped through the tear?

Yeah you misunderstood some of the context there. Kratos wasn't calling out for Atreus as if Atreus wasn't with them, the scene was from Atreus'perspective as he was barely conscious while Kratos carried him and called to him to stay with them. In other words, Atreus was injured from the blast but was never separated from the group. He had turned back to save Frayer but was immediately injured and knocked unconscious (and was likely ejected through the realm tare) and then Kratos and the others rushed to safety while carrying him.

The mural was depicting Kratos dying in Atreus arms as Thor stands over them after being victorious in their fight, however they convince Thor to stop his fight against them and "be better" at which point the prophecy can no longer be fulfilled and they have chosen their own fate. This results in odin being the one to die instead. In the original mural, I'm guessing it's Atreus not wanting Kratos to truly die and putting his soul into the marble instead of letting him die however after changing their fate he chooses to trap Odins soul in the marble which fulfills the prophecy in a different way because it's not his father dying but the All-Father instead.

7:31 I interpret it differently. That’s very clearly Kratos in Atreus’s lap in the mural, and that is a very living Thor standing over them-the outcome is different in the end because Kratos did something unforeseen: he grew as a person and changed for the better because of the love he and his son share for one another. This was set up in Kratos’s encounter with the Norns, who state there is no such thing as fate, they only are able to guess the future, and they are always correct because people are easy to read, people don’t change their nature. But Kratos learns to change his nature by the end of the game and embraces it; whereas before the mission was about vengeance, Atreus helps Kratos to see it should be about justice. This leads to Kratos sparing Thor, who then gives up the fight and is ultimately murdered by Odin, furthering Odin’s own demise. Kratos’s decision to be better for the sake of leaving his child a better world had a trickling effect and drastically changed the result.

If we do get more games, Atreus will be an adult and the Giant race will be restored. I highly doubt we will see another GOW entry for 5+ years plus I cannot see why Kratos would fight anymore unless external gods from other pantheons attack Midgard or something along those lines. IMO this is likely the last main God of War game, however we may get certain spinoffs about Atreus.

I don't see the invasion concept working unless the invading pantheon conquered Greece already since it was a lot more vulnerable than the 9 realms. Perhaps a God or Demi-God from Greece warns comet to warn him of the incoming invasion. Or in the bastard child scenario asks Kratos to teach him/her how to be a war god.

I actually have an idea for an ending game to the GOW franchise that I call God of War Pantheons, a story that crosses over multiple Pantheons that seem to go to seemingly war over the power gap left by the deaths of Zeus and Odin, due to the threat of Chaos, a force that every supreme deity had kept in check.
I imagine the beginning of this story to be many years later, at a point where Atreus and Angrboda have fallen in love, got married, and even had their daughter Hela. Midgard would be at peace and Kratos has finally known true peace since Ragnarok, but it is all at risk after seeing what appears to be a meteor fall from the sky in the direction of Tyr's temple. Kratos would make his way toward the temple, only to find the roof and bridge destroyed, and the Egyptian God of War named Montu at the center of it. The tutorial battle would be fighting against hackles, followed by a boss fight with Montu afterwards.
Halfway during the battle, a God from another Pantheon appears. Guan Yu of Chinese Mythology attacks and begins a battle with Montu, giving Kratos a chance to escape into the Realm between Realms, but Montu follows him. The second half of the boss fight shows Kratos nearly about to be killed by Montu, but Montu is stabbed by Greta from behind, killing him. I know it's not a perfect opening, but if they don't want to keep doing individual mythologies, a crossover would be the best finale to the entire franchise. So long as Kratos gets the poetic death he deserves. As he said, death can have me, when it earns me.
I definitely have a lot to work on with this potential sequel idea, but here are the key points of it. Instead of the Nine Realms, we would travel to different lands using Freyr's Boat for fast travel such as Egypt, Britain, Ireland, China, Japan, Greece. Any other realm in Norse mythology is only available in the main story. A romance would begin to grow between Kratos and Freya, despite their individual emotional struggles they both have within themselves after the events of Baldur's death. King Arthur, Sun Wukong, and Cu Chulainn would become allies with their backstories tweaked to fit the narrative. We would meet the Morrigan of Celtic Mythology and learn that she gave Odin his surplus of Ravens in the past. We would also learn that the Mask in Ragnarok was connected to Chaos and that the Spark of the World is the main cause of the invasion since its origin is linked to Chaos. Kratos would journey back to a post-apocalyptic Greece to retrieve the Blade of Olympus, but be intercepted by survivors of GOW 3, who seek vengeance against Kratos for destroying their land, and Phobos and Deimos, who seek vengeance for the death of their father Ares.
Athena would ultimately be revealed to be the mastermind behind everything, as she has formed a coalition of Gods that seek to gain power over Chaos using the Spark of the World. Athena's true goal is to reign over all mortals in her own way without the Power of Hope by manipulating the Pantheons as she tried to do with Kratos in GOW 3. Gods such as the Jade Emperor, the Tuatha De Danann of Celtic Mythology, and a few leftover Greek Deities would join Kratos against Athena. Meanwhile, Ra would join Athena in an attempt to destroy Chaos while Izanagi joins Athena in a maddening attempt to resurrect his wife Izanami from the Underworld known as Yomi. Atreus and Sindri would still be in a bad place, but Sindri goes easier on Atreus as he is tasked with protecting and looking after Hela while Atreus searches for a missing Angrboda. The Underworld would be revealed to be a parallel of the Living Realm and connect all existing Underworlds, allowing fast travel to new lands within the Underworlds of the various other mythologies. Before the final battle against Athena, Kratos and Freya would have a romantic moment, to where they promise themselves to each other when this is all over, if they survive that is. Atreus would ultimately die by Athena's hands, but have a final heartfelt moment with Sindri, who finally forgives him for what happened to Brok. Kratos would ultimately accept and embrace his old self, but control it in a way where he chooses how it will define him. After finally killing Athena, the serpent Apep would appear from the center of Chaos as the final boss. With the Blade of Olympus harnessing the power of multiple Gods from different Pantheons, Kratos destroys Chaos and ultimately dies. In the end, Angrboda and Sindri would look after Hela, helping her control her power and train her to become the ruler of Hel in Scandinavia. Meanwhile, Freya scours the Underworld and beyond to search for Kratos's Soul, determined to keep the promise they made earlier.

But faye didn’t believe in that prophecy from the other giants and saw her own prophecy, another path where kratos and atreus survive and defy fate. Thats why she went against the giants, in terms of having her own prophecy. That is also why she destroyed lokis and kratos‘ mural, because she didnt want them to see that prophecy of the giants so they can create their own path. Faye taught kratos‘ to open his heart and to always protect atreus and to fight for justice instead of vengance, which is how keatos‘ changed fate and fayes prophecy came true.

Also the story can be three parts 1 where Krapts and Loki keep searching for answers and 2 where they have an idea what's happening 3 they decide to go to war and start Ragnarok. The first part is really strong. The next two parts are very slow and weak for a god of war game. Although they still handled it somewhat decently it is nowhere near the zenith of story telling GoW3 on PS3 was. The way story unfolds in GOW2 ending to GOW3 ending was really the height which Santa Monica couldn't failed to achieve with GOW Ragnarok.
