This video contains heavy spoilers for God of War Ragnarok.
God of War Ragnarok had a daunting task ahead of it: not only did it have to wrap up a sprawling tale of fate, prophecy, and parenthood in a neat bow, but do it all under the looming presence of the end of the world, at least, in Norse mythology. But succeed it did, with many fans and critics (including GameSpot's own Tamoor Hussain, who awarded the game a 9/10) praising the ending, and the path Kratos and Atreus took to get there.
God of War Ragnarok's director, Eric Williams, joins Tamoor Hussain and Lucy James to discuss the game's ending at length, and we're not kidding when we tell you that this video contains spoilers. We discuss Tyr's important role in the game, Odin's plans and his relationship with his family, and that all important ending: Ragnarok itself.
We touch upon many other topics, including the death of a beloved character, Freya's role in the whole saga, and the ups and downs of parenthood.

“You *DO NOT WANT* Kratos coming to your house.”
That’s some good life advice there.
Sindri: would've appreciated that advice half a lifetime ago
@@rigen97 ooooof. Too soon. Too soon.
You will not find him good company
I actually think this is how the next Kratos game will start. HIM doing the knocking this time.
@@andray310 If he is the one who knocks 😳
I hope we aren't done with Kratos. I want to see this new version of Kratos who has opened his heart to people's suffering and wants to help out of his own will
The way the camera favored Loki/Atreus at the end before he climbs off camera indicates we'll be following him in my opinion, but I hope you're right!
He can rest now, I'm all for atreus maybe a different type of game more in line with Bayonetta or DMC since his skills leans more on dexterity. And have Kratos cameo since He'll probably be travelling other realms like Tyr did.
It will make for interesting future games seeing as kratos ended this game more vulnerable than we’ve ever seen him. And by that I just mean more open hearted. I wonder if it will put him in danger.
Honestly I feel like Kratos has to die eventually. And I was kind of hoping he would cus it would have been a massive shock ending. I was disappointed that they didn’t go through with it, not that I want him dead, I just think it would have been a much more powerful ending
@@sdaftermath123 I have a wild theory: They did tell us what happens. Kratoss will die, BUT i think thats the game after this next one with loki. I think at the end of that next one he gets caught, and the now worshipped god of war will pick up his weapons one last time for a real reason. To get his boyyyy. (I hinge all that on that paintings dont depict age very well, so we dont know when in the future it is.)
GoW 2018 and GoW Ragnarok are absolute masterpieces. It's amazing that this media format has gone from shooting blips at Space Invader pixels to 100+ hour productions with legitimate actors, writers, directors, etc. to rival film and TV. I'm so happy to be alive during this era of entertainment.
amen to that brother. when the credits came up i felt so much gratitude for being able to experience this art in the way we do
Agreed!
Ragnarok is the true GOTY.
The combat and enemy mechanics are literally just copy and pasted it's literally identical to 2018 fookin borinf even the puzzles r the same.
@@user-fy3nf3lg2j I knew I'd find one
I love how the midgardians were used as human shields and Skjöldr's name literally means shield, so he was essentially bred to be a human shield.
It was also just super cool to get a window into the mortal side of things, like how all these gods are effecting regular people
@@lukekline9513 facts that was the only thing I felt the game was missing before was some grounded unbiased perspective on the characters
As cool as it was to play as Bear Atreus does anyone else think it might've been more interesting from a storytelling standpoint seeing Kratos helping the normal Mortal Midgardians in Asgard instead of destroying the world around them granted Asgard still gets destroyed but I think it would have added to Kratos' character development going from someone who destroyed all of Olympus and Greece in the process of killing most of the Mortals, to trying to help and save as many as he can, I don't know I think it would've been better but that's my opinion.
Doesn’t Skjoldr become King of denmark
@@DEADtoRISE08 yes
lets not forget that when Brok died, Sindri finally teleports on camera.
I thought for a second that my game had glitched
I legit feel privileged to have experienced this game. Genuinely feel like it raises the bar what a single player game experience can be.
Honestly the best story game I've ever played in my life.
I can't believe I never had any interest in GoW until the ragnarok trailer, don't even remember watching a video or trailer on any previous game
But a week before this game out I finally ran through gow 2018, and just finished this game, what an amazing experience those 2 combined are
Now for the first trilogy lol
It took morals and layered them enough not to obscure their relatability, but still draw the player in. Very self-aware game.
@@TMeek94 Don't forget the PSP games Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta... also Ascension. Greek saga is actually 6 games with 3 prequels. Much lighter on story but fun action games nonetheless, give more meaning to the Norse saga.
@@trunksbriefs4132 not sure how ill be able to play those
I know the trilogy is on Playstation plus, I'm actually playing the second one right now lol
22:45 I was wondering what Angrboda gave Atreus at the end in the unintelligible convo! Makes so much sense now!
She always found him bc she had his marble and at the end she gave him her marble to always be able to find her. That's so cute
The ending battle where Ragnarok actually happened was pretty quick other than that I have no complaints and GoW 2018 and this one will forever be close to my heart.
I felt the same way. I then started to think about wars, and how quickly many individual battles are lost or won. We hear about all these year-long wars but many (probably most?) battles are over fairly quickly. Also, war is more than just the physical fight!
@@snakeon1 very true
it's also God's going to war
@@HopeIVLove tru
Yep...just compare the final fight with baldur and ragnarok's. You just fight thor and odin in the same setting, between a bunch of rocks? Could have made something special, its RAGNAROK.
I love how when Brok dies Sindri doesn’t care about cleanliness at all. So awesome.
I noticed that too! Neat
I noticed that too! Neat
Well if you pay close attention or just read about it he got germaphobe because of saving broks life in the first place by jumping in the lake
Sindri is more op than Kratos.
@@Enceladus335 So why does sindri act disgusted by alfheim sand, or when he mentions that brok spat on the whetstone he gave him in 2018?
I really wanna see the original motion capture performances for the whole game especially the big emotional moments. If Santa Monica ever releases the motion capture footage, I’m watching it 3 times
I would watch all of the storyline that way!
When you play the game for a second time n you see Groa’s prophecy and Tyr says she lied . It makes so much sense knowing he is Odin.
Eric absolutely killed it. The fact that he constructed a story as good as this with just the 3 points that Cory provided him is incredible.
We still don’t know who blew the horn 😩
@@melokelo1498 in the Easy Allies interview he said he knows who did it but can't say lol
@@melokelo1498 Apparently Cory or someone else will reveal it later on. Although some specualte it was Angrboda.
Was it really a good story? Now that the steam is off. It was OK at best.
@@jimmybrooks5902yea it's still a good story
they did such a good job with the whole odin being tyr idea. I was legit so mad when he killed brok and I carried that with me until I beat odin in the end and it felt so good when sindri smashed odins marble. such a good good game.
It is nice to hear about the first daughter of Kratos Calliope, Opening that to Freya is the only way he can gain the trust of freya again because Kratos know the feeling of losing a child. What a great writing!!
Just earned my platinum. This game was perfect from start to end. The story, the combat, the pacing, the sheer brutality was on a another level. Hat tipped to Cory, and the ENTIRE team that brought this to life. Well worth the wait.
I had to platinum this game out of respect. Props to everyone in the game design team, they made the looting and cinematic aspects of the game blend so well. Dialogue was always engaging or funny, cutscenes blended so well, platforming was much better and combat was so much fun this time around.
I need to go platinum the 2018 Game just bc this two part series deserves to be platinumed
this was my first ever plat. i don’t replay games often but im already stoked to go back in on max difficulty
@Beesh Man that's impressive! I'm really struggling with Gna on Give Me No Mercy even with all my power! I've beaten all the Beserkers though.
@@BryMakesArt I plat, or 100% the GoW 2018 when I heard it released on PC. Then when I realised that the sequel is coming this year, I got myself a PS5 and am now striving to get platinum for this game as well. Such a well crafted game. No words can really describe what a beautiful game it is
@GunnerGunnarsson Yeah it is. What a experience!
Fenrir's passing and rebirth, Freya's begrudging forbearance giving way to forgiveness and family, Sigrund's cleansing and reunion with Mimir, Angrboda, Thrud, Atreus stepping into manhood, Birgir's heroics, Freyr's self sacrifice. Surtur's self sacrifice. Odin's continued betrayal and Brok's death. The heartbreak at Sindri's utter devastation and soul bending rage. Thor's redemption. Kratos' redemption and development. There were tears. Joy. Rage. Hatred. Loss. Sorrow. Emptiness. Hope. Masterful writing. Excellent production. Many thanks to Santa Monica Studios, you guys knocked this one out of the park narratively. Further stories are needed.
It might seem silly to some but these two games have really changed my life…… I honestly find myself talking to myself through out the day and telling myself to be better, to harness panic, it’s amazing how these games can show how no matter how wrong you mess up, you’re worthy of forgiveness
I can relate to this. These games gave me insight to be a more interactive father with my daughter. That I can be the strong man in her life, teaching her life lessons but at the same time being supportive and teaching.
Facts
I loved that Kratos advice to Atreus in 2018 is to, “close your heart,” to not feel or think about your actions too zealously. While Odin tells Thor, “don’t think,” to not stew on what you’re doing and just do what I say. And then Ragnarok demonstrates how both of these “lessons” are counter-intuitive to the growth of the recipient.
When Brok died, I didn't stop crying until much after the scene with Sindri in Tyr's temple, and then I cried for like 10 minutes at the funeral. And it serves so well to motivate our characters. It wasn't until then that Kratos became convinced that Odin had to die. The whole time he was reluctant to go to war, but after that he knew that if Odin lives on, then he will continue to just bring more suffering to the innocent. Brok and Sindri were innocent here.
lol u started crying
U cried?🤣😂😂😊
God, his death was so much to deal with. I I'd NOT see it coming whatsoever and it broke me.
@@buss1205 There's nothing with getting emotional because of a story. And there's nothing wrong with crying in general. Don't put them down because they cried over Brok's death, if anything the fact that they DID cry over both his death and funeral is a good testament to just how amazing the story is.
You don't need to be rude.
@@dhruvo100 The fact that he cried over it is a good thing. Just goes to show that the story is really good.
But you mocking him is pretty uncool and rude my guy.
i love that last line
"why can't video games do all that"
God bless for able to witness and feel the game. such emotions & grew as a person playing this game.
Týr was suspicious to me about half way through his story, I never expected him to he Odin himself but I thought he was going to be loyal to Odin as in like a Stockholm Syndrome scenario where he can't let his captor down. Then the Brok part thrown in with it, wow, what a shock.
I was doubting him the entire time we were in alfeim until Atreus fell into the lake of souls and we jumped in after him. I thought tyr was going to grab atteaus and then let us fall back in and that would be a whole thing, but he saved us and there was that lingering moment where they looked at eat other and nodded. That really went a long way for proving tyr was on our side and threw me even harder when he turned out to be odin
@Evan Jabas oh man, yeah. 100%. It was really convincing, but I think the point I knew he was going to turn for sure was the fight outside Sindris house.
Should have killed Atreus. Would make the ending better .
@@waltermelon5672 that should happen to you. sadly no one cares about your ending
I first started to hard sus Tyr in the moment where Atreus returns to the tree after freeing Garm, & Tyr doesn’t appear until after the fight, emerging from the house with a shield, it was clear there he was just trying way too hard to appear pacifist
When he said "u dont want kratos coming to your house" that was epic
Thank you Eric Williams , Cory Barlog and the whole santa monica team for this masterpiece game❤️. Thank you PlayStation
The character arcs in general were so good. Sindri especially left me heartbroken. I also really loved the scene where Kratos finally tells Atreus “son you are ready” compared to how in the beginning of GoW 2018 he sternly tells him “you are not ready BOY!”. It was a nice little touch that showed Kratos’ growth as a father after finally acknowledging Atreus’ differences and accepting his growth as not only a son but an individual whose discovered their life’s purpose. Normally i find myself emotionally sad at the end of these kinds of stories. But with the exception of Sindri’s tragic arc i ended my play through feeling a sense of overwhelming satisfaction for how things wrapped up. Now I eagerly await the next big adventure.
3:40 I love how because the clip is muted, the interviewer saying "yes" quietly seems like Kratos saying it sadly hahaha
In the words of the late Jim Valvano “If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special” that’s what I experienced playing this game.
I really enjoyed Freya's arc in this game. Fantastic. Danielle Bisutti nailed it.
"(...) Books and movies do that (offering moments of self reflections) so why can't video games ?"
This is a really impressive question regarding AAA games and VG culture at large. Mr Williams is a very balanced person, humble and fantastic creative and director. This video is a whole lesson about creative process. How to balance the creative, narrative and fulfill the specifications. Amazing work from Alpha to Omega !
Really like thor's problem as a father and kratos' growth as a father too. Thor reminds me of my own father with troubles always on his mind but struggling his way for us nonetheless. And kratos is the father I want to be, someone who can overcome their past hurdles and see the better way for their children. Truly a game and a story on family. Love it
When brock started asking questions i was thinking tyr was brainwashed by odin. It never occurred to me that he was odin himself. They shocked me twice with one double cross
I thought they might've swapped at some point while we were out, but nope, it was Odin from the start...
Saaame I thought he was turned double agent or something
Thank you guys,THIS was the stuff I wanted to see & hear in an interview- this story is a STELLAR achievement by SSM & I'm still emotionally recovering from the finalé,days later.🏆
I only just now got through the game. I’m glad I’m finding that everyone else is left in this place of emotional funk even days later. I am also so glad for those content as well. Santa Monica seriously had some stellar human beings working there.
I actually teared up when he explained that Kratos was thinking could I give the forgiveness that Fraya gave to him if it was Atreus that was killed
Very true. I’m not sure he could have, even as the man he is today
@@user-wy1et9dk9w I think he'd fully regress into the God he once was just as he said to Odin so yeah I think we would see the Ghost of Sparta and that would be even worse for the gods than old man Kratos and that version of Kratos still did what he did in Ragnarök
2:58 the one who knocks
5:25 do over
7:35 wants odins attention
9:25 odins jealous
14:50 family dog
19:13 forgiveness
20:40 atreus world view
22:40 he ships it and it will sail
23:13 approval
23:30 kratos loves his son 😭
24:48 such a good ending
I love that he is talking about odin so much. He was the most interesting character in the game by far. By the end of the game I wanted to know more about odin and this interview revealed more about his character. I never thought how Odin did feel about atreus being able to translate something he had been working on for his entire life.
See I wish they had made that known a little more. Like Odin asking HOW Ateus does it and Odin playing it off as him being impressed and then when Ateus looks away we see Odin look at Ateus with hatred for a split second
@@PeachesandCream225 I felt bad for odin cause even though he was manipulating the characters and the player with his nice guy act, he really didn't do much for me to hate him other than the tories told by everyone else. Small things like what you stated would have gone a long way..
Odin is/was my dude. From the moment he showed up at the door "You know who I am" lol! He's the cool uncle/OG type that's really a snake underneath, but at the same time likeable.
How would you react if hear about your prophesied death... you'd do anything possible to prevent it. And I loved how he used Atreus thirst for knowledge as manipulation. If he would've put on that mask, I think we would've seen that original mural come true with kratos dying
This game and 2018 was an emotional roller-coaster, loved them both, having a son made all those moments hit harder.
Facts. Both stories are stellar but looking at it from a fatherly perspective gives it even more oomph. It's pretty cool that games have come so far as to have that effect.
@@peanut-junder
"game came so far"
Plenty of deep, thought-provoking games from decades ago. Maybe it's not gaming that "grew up", maybe it's you
This was a brilliant interview. Not just Eric’s answers but the depth and specificity of the questions. Great video.
Have to reiterate this. I've been interviewing for a few jobs and have been looking into how to ask good questions; The interviews with specific and emotional questions typically generate a more positive response and getting the interviewee to disclose more about their experience. What a great interview this video was.
The only thing I wish they would’ve done is had either some scrolls or some conversations about Baldur. Like Atreus talking to Odin about him just to get some more of his backstory and what Odin actually did to him. You know Odin instantly took advantage of his invulnerability when he found out. It’d be cool to learn more about those two relationship.
I absolutely love this story from when we first cremated Faye and met Atreus all the way through Ragnarök. The story was both written and portrayed beautifully and I hope to write something this good someday.
The key I noticed that sindri was in grief was that he was forging without gloves on and filthy. He’s a clean freaks and he almost throws up in the first game when he mentioned brok forging without gloves because that’s why he’s blue
I finished the main campaign last night. This game is a masterpiece. I whooped, cheered, cried and laughed. There were moments I was shaking from combat, especially fighting Thor and Odin. I was surprised in ways I never imagined. I didn't expect Atreus to leave I was a mess but I am excited for the future and the inevitable Atreus/Loki expansion/game.
Far from a masterpiece, son. VERY far.
A masterpiece indeed
@@The_Ostrich Good thing we are all entitled to our opinions stranger.
The only part I didn’t like about this game is it’s up and downs. Moments in the middle of the game didn’t feel like it was playing as a forfeit the the story was had been mixed or been messed around but it hold itself when we reach the end but the second problem there’s a lot of questions haven’t answered in this game besides of the genderism And my biggest criticism is I didn’t take that much of a fight with Thor I feel like there will be a lot more encounters and moves don’t make his fatness as excuse for not make him capable of doing moves you could make him fit character. Because it’s a fictional game with a fictional story you can change color schemes of the people so you can’t even change the body of the characters
This a masterpiece? I think it doesnt even come close to how good the 2018 game was. There are a lot of errors and bad choices throughout the game. If you want we can talk about it
It's my game of the year based on story telling alone. It makes me wonder what I missed from 2018, and I will likely play them both again soon.
I can't even imagine playing the 2018 one again, because man, compared to Ragnarok that just feels too empty of characters and stuff to do. They really went super big on the sequel.
Edit: Just to be clear, I've played the first one twice on PS4 and once on PC, so i was probably never gonna play it again for at least a few years.
@@AbhijeetMishraI still think 2018 holds up to Ragnarok. I think I prefer Ragnarok tho.
@@distortedswamper5796 i guess the story was more focused in the first one and there is a charm in that, because Ragnarok does feel like too long sometimes. But still, by the end of Ragnarok i was left in awe. It's like they got five times the budget this time and told them to do what they want.
This is one of not just greatest games I’ve ever played, it’s also the best sequel/conclusion to a saga I have ever seen on screen!
I cried no less than 4 times at this game, both at heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. And now we have seen not only Atreus/Loki grow into his own, we have seen Kratos finally do something I thought impossible…..open his heart not just for his wife and son, but to the world. The moment he breaks down after seeing his tryptic shrine and sees that he becomes not just the new All-Father but a good and loving god I cried just as hard with him.
Thank you Corey Barlog, Eric Williams and all the great geniuses behind making this game. I will treasure it always.😭😭😭👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is definitely one of the games of all time.
@@ej4458 such a dead "meme" lol
@@ej4458 people just use this when they see others happy
I'm kinda curious now. I'm assuming that Brok's Death and or Funeral Pyre are among those moments os what are the others?
@@ziadbaha1699 I loved the game, not as great story as last one but I still loved it
My main reason for wanting a last game with Kratos is honestly just to earn Sindris friendship again. It broke me seeing how hurt and hateful Sindri was left. I can’t except that this is how Sindris ark ends.
Although maybe that is a compelling ending because our friendship with Sindri was another casualty in the war with Odin.
I agree! Sindri was my favorite character in this game and it breaks my heart that we've left him in such a broken state. I understand that he's grieving and angry, but I want him to be able to move on and to forgive and to spend time with his friends again.
I never noticed until he mentioned it, but the whole game is a "one-shot", which means the camera never really cuts to somewhere else. no hard cuts the whole game, it's always a fluid and interesting transition to someone or somewhere else. amazing game design and story telling.
The fact they did that in both this one and 2018 is amazing.
It is because of games like this that I reject the whole "only losers and unproductive people" play video games.
This kind of game is what happens when a bunch of highly intelligent people collaborate together. It is a modern work of human art, and it is a shame to so easily disregard such a magnificent piece of work.
Thor and Freya were by far the best characters for me. But all acting was insane, everyone did an incredible job. It might be a bit awkward for the actors to work with motion capture, but the result is insane. Tyr/Odin reveal was was surprising to me, well done ! There are still things they havent answered sadly, but im hoping for a new saga and possible explanation of them.
those three things cory said needed to happen gives me hope for his and eric’s ideas in the next games
I know, he was the nicest guy in the game.
Cory won’t be involved in the next game. He’s busy working on a brand new IP
3:40 love how that “yeah” synced up
Best written, acted and directed characters of the last 10 years. Never paid much attention to God of War until the norse saga took storytelling to another level.
Where Kratos tells Atreus "You are ready," is probably the highlight line of the game to me. I love how the importance of fatherhood was placed front and center in these games. Manhood must be conferred upon boys by the father (or a strong father figure). Seeing Kratos give Atreaus that affirmation of manhood was such a powerful for me, having had a wonderful relationship with my dad, and now having two boys of my own.
Couldn’t stop crying for kartos seeing his fate of being loved, we’ve all been there and wanted that approval let alone becoming the god that he was meant to be, I pray to kartos everyday. Praise the god of war, bringer of death and forgiveness. The better god!!!
You should not pray to a fictional charactor. That is blasphamy. but i understand you like that game and that a good thing.
I love Karlos

“We must be better”
The Tyr twist genuinely had me shocked
Phenomenal game … I can’t believe they were able to surpass god of war 2018. I absolutely loved every moment …. Kratos telling Atreus to open his heart and not change was unreal. Beautiful ending
The only thing I wished was that the final encounter with Thor and Odin was drawn out a bit longer. But other than that I’m fine with what we got in the end.
Really though freya and Freyr mini arc in this game was heartwarming because having siblings you grew up and all the fighting and rivalry and the shared experiences will jade you throughout life and for them to reconcile was beautiful
Nooooo we need MORE. That was one of the best interviews I've ever have the pleasure to watch!!
10/10 , one of the best interactive media things ever .
Gamespot : 9/10.
Also GameSpot: Deathloop 10/10
9/10 is fair. 10/10 is just bias.
This is the best post game breakdown I’ve seen for Ragnorok. Tamoor and Lucy truly seem to understand storytelling and are asking the best questions. Eric also is responding with unique answers that you can’t find in other peoples interviews with him. Great work y’all
I hope we get to play Kratos' new journey, would love to see him become a beloved and revered God.
This is a FANTASTIC interview. Great job to the hosts and Eric for diving into the nuanced detail that was put into this game. I love Eric’s perspective on video games and the power they hold. All around S-tier video 👏👏👏
The director saying “mirrors and clones” kind of gives credence to the theory that Atreus’s relationship with Sindri has gone down the same path as Kratos and Freya’s, turning Sindri into a temporary rival for the boy.
They are surely going to make an Atreus game, centered on his quest to find the giants, and with the emotional theme being him reconnecting with Sindri. 100%.
We'll see if it will be the next installment of the gow franchise, or will be managed as a spinoff.
So happy Kratos didn’t die at the end. I was so worried about the mural from 2018 and this game
Even though he hasn't been as camera present as Cory, Eric seems like a really cool director as well. Santa Monica's got a lot of a talent.
I love that Dimond dogs patch on his shirt. The interviewer is a cultured individual
This was so great! I was gonna wait until NEW GAME plus to play the main storyline again, but after this, I need to re-experience this masterpiece knowing the things I know!
I just hope this isn't the last we've seen of Kratos and Atreus together doing adventures.
@Hunter G japan probably next.kratos the franchise
Very unlikely. There is way too much Kratos lore that needs telling. And there so much new things Atreus is gonna bring to franchise. And from a business perspective if I was Sony I wouldn’t sleep on their biggest franchise.
The next game is hinted to take place in Chinese mythology
@@smol1211 I would much prefer Celtic Mythology since thats where Mimir is from. Would be very interesting to visit his homeland. Although Japanese, Chinese and Egyptian would also be great.
@@SoulShardx Eric Williams literally hinted at it in an interview
Besides more of Kratos, I hope we get an NG+ soon!
This was an awesome interview. Just finished the game last night and I loved it. Great to hear some of the behind the scenes and inspirations for the game.
The fact they knew Brok had to die early on is crazy, I suppose it could have been Kratos.
The best PlayStation game ever. Every game have it's flaws and for sure, there is some flaws in this game but the pros outweigh the cons. Definitely GOTY 2022
the game itself showcased this on multiple different levels, but i loved how this interview really brought out how much love was poured into ragnarok that i almost wished it was longer. i loved how much the interviewers and the questions reflected a genuine love for the game, and i loved how the director's answers reflected a genuine love in making it.
also i started crying when they discussed the reason why brok had to die, but i think it also helped me understand better as to why losing a character that said "fuckle" unironically made me cry so much that i think it literally left me dehydrated. gow 2018 and ragnarok are masterpieces. not just of games, but of just, art in general. thank you so much for this!!!
Game was absolute perfection just finished it last night and was astounded by the ending
Wow just knowing how so many people did knock on Kratos door and then when he technically does it, he ends the whole realm lol. That’s awesome.
Making up as you go is great, in this case in the right hands it's awesome. I also really jive with Eric Williams on his creative direction. Sony picked a real good guy for the game director and it showed. Good leadership equals a good project.
I wonder If Sindri will be even more angry at Atreus for not showing up at Brok's funeral.
3:40 perfectly timed "yea"
I hope there are more games like this that have an story that draws you in but also makes you think and come up with your own conclusion for some things like they said at the end books TV movies all do it so why not video games
if you haven't played them yet, the " a plague tale" games are doing such a good job, in my opinion the story is just as good as GOW's with a lower budget.
Video games are such a fantastic medium to tell that kind of story as you have to live them and not just witness them, most other mediums cannot do that.
Words can’t describe how perfect this game was to me. As an exiting teenager who just lost his father in this world, this game was more to me than any narrative ever has been. This game spoke to me personally, and I am so happy I, like Kratos said, ‘open[ed] my heart’ to it. This game was perfect, seriously. Santa Monica outdid themselves entirely. Thank you.
Im so sorry about your loss and hope that you got everything you could out of this game and the story. indeed open your heart to it, because that is who you are ❤️
I actually suspected Tyr was Odin when you go into the shrine in Alfheim, when they reveal to Tyr that Groa lied to Odin, Tyr says “she lied” but you can see it’s personal by his expression and by the way he says it.
That plus then the camera looms behind him and he looks pretty ominous as a silhouette. I remember being like “that is way too suspicious he took that way too personally something’s not right”.
That and also the fact that before the game came out there were theories that Tyr is dead and it’s just Odin impersonating him which is pretty much true. But despite that the game did do a good job of convincing me the longer the game went on to not question what I see.
But now that he mentioned the little details I’m definitely going to pay even more attention in NG+ once that eventually comes out.
Hopefully we get a DLC as well
I knew something was up soon as we saved "Tyr" lol 3 doors in a Svartalheim mine? Too easy. Whole game I wondered why no one asked him about that.
Apparently his name shows up as Tyr not Týr as Odin, and the way he talks / alot of his movements are similar (eye patch makes him favor one side)
Still feel like i missed something with the Tyr/Odin Reveal, wasn't it said that Odin could use the bifrost and travel all over the nine realms but is unable to use or goto fhe World Tree, so how was he able to follow Aterus and Kratos to Sindri's Home. Second question is isn't Mimir's eyes able to see all and know all through knowledge....so how was he unable to see through Odin's deception
@@distinguishedallureproduct879 If I remember right it isnt that Odin couldnt go to the Realm Between Realms (Sindris House), merely that he either didnt know how, or didnt know it existed. Once we brought him there, he used his 2 ravens to travel back and forth from the broom closet lol.
Regarding Mimir, he doesnt know everything as showcased multiple times when he asks Freya or the Dwarves questions. What he sees is relative to what he knows of, and as of Fimbulwinter he only knew what was foretold. Freya was the one to get us through illusions as well, so magic can still trick his eye.
It’s weird seeing him in the endgame it’s almost like he’s not real. I was expecting some more side content with him like some cut scenes or something idk
I haven’t played Elden Ring yet.... but I believe that 2022’s E3 should have been the first award ceremony that had two game of the years 😂😪 this was truly a fantastic experience
Deep in my heart I was hoping Brok would come back 😢😢😢
Same, but I'm glad he didn't though. Makes it more impactful when you know you can't go back (Sindri going to get his soul pieces again).
He may get back on the next one. Brock was blue, he had already died once. So since it's fictional, the developers can make him come back.
@@saimir77 no, it's confirmed there is no way for him to come back or at least the fact that he told Sindri to let go. Hes not coming back.
One of the best games I've ever played
I first thought that kratos heard calliope in the light of Alfheim when he almost touch it again. Then Atreus would have been referring to Faye when he says she’s gone, and Kratos’ reply would really be about calliope
This is so much more than a video game. First game I ever platinum’d. Just impressive.
I have to say probably the most well written game I've ever played well done. This is my game of the year for story fs
If they have a series with Atreus it will probably be a spin off series since Atreus isn't a god of war. The next series will be called something else which means they could still revisit the main series as kratos again either with kratos established as the new ruler of the realms or they could make prequels of kratos journey across the world before moving to Midgard. In the novel and comics it's explained kratos travelled to different pantheons over the course of centuries.
Son of War? :D
@@vex992 probably just loki
Or God of Mischief~
They should have just made it a triliogy. There was so little Ragnarok in this game about Ragnarok.... Should have just called it GoW: Atreus
YES I thought it was just me , ragnarok was so rushed and small pretty sure iron wood was longer
@@PxndaRy it was like they suddenly remembered that they needed to add some Ragnarok at the end
I dunno if you noticed, But in the Kratos vs Thor round 2, looking closely, The sky is red with a lot of thunder branching down, Like a storm caused by these 2 destroyers facing off. I'd love to imagine that his is the eye of the storm, And outside the area of where they fight is a strong storm, That everytime kratos use his rage and pull out his blades of chaos to get an upper hand, The clouds of the storm turns blood red, And everytime the Mjolnir and Leviathan axe collide, The storm ever so slightly gets colder and makes the thunder more frequent and louder, That every heavy hit they unleash, Reverberate like a rumbling earthquake in the storm. I'd love to imagine that in the future when kratos die, A survivor of Ragnarok will tell the tale of the storm caused by the collision of two great deities, The god killer and the giant slayer.
This game was a masterpiece
Far from it..
I really enjoyed this interview 😁
Amadeus is one of my ALL-TIME favorite films. It’s great that they got inspiration from it.
"You don't want Kratos coming to your house" 🤣🤣🤣
I'm 45 and have loved gaming forever. I've always loved books, stories, and thats why I love love love these games, they're like interactive books. I love how totally immersed you can get, you can forget everything else that might be happening in your world and live in another for a while.
This game coming out was perfect timing for me. My sons dad just died, he wasn't a great guy, so wasn't a great dad and was really hard to co parent with, he was awful to me, and to our son who's 22, nothing physical it was all emotional. Despite this he was family and I was with him when he took his last breath, grieving has been hard, he'd pushed away most of his friends so there isn't many who care that he's dead and even though it was his doing its still really sad, there was a time in his life when there wouldn't have been enough rm at the funeral parlour instead it was family and ten mates.
Anyway I didn't mean to go on this much but what I was heading towards was just how much this game has helped me get through the first few weeks, being able to just become so immersed in a different world has saved my brain. So thank you to all who made this game possible.
God of War Ragnarok is a masterpiece, Eric Williams did a amazing job directing the game 👏👏👏👏
I really hope we aren't done with this world and these characters. Whatever happens next, we still need Kratos. I enjoyed the Atreus parts, but I'm 100% playing all these games for Kratos. He's the best video game character of all time, and I hope we get to enjoy many more stories with him. 😍
I love this game soooo much. But I didn't really enjoy the combat for atreus. Bow and arrow was weak for me. Understand why he has one though
@AxelViper As in the parts when you play as him? I know what you mean. It was alright, but I just couldn't wait to get back to playing as Kratos again. I don't want them thinking we want a full game with Atreus. Haha.
I don't know. They need to leave Midgard next, but to where? How? Why? It would be great to see grandpa Kratos tackling an entire pantheon to save baby Hela, but I think he earned his happy ending.
He certainly has, but it's Kratos, right? We need him in gaming. Maybe a bit of sunshine from the deserts of ancient Egypt will do him good, and who knows what or who he'll find. He has already been there briefly in the comic prequel.
@@ncpmadhead I definitely agree with that, did not like combat with Atreus at all. Couldn't wait to get back to Kratos.
Wonderful interview, great hosts.
Brok dying and Sindri being broken hurt me the most
There was a red herring related to Brok dying when Sindri starts talking about the soul related thing to Atreus.
Ofc Atreus and Angrboda is gonna be a thing, Hel still needs to be born :D
The last statement Eric makes should really be the motto of this industry!
