Couldn’t have said this any better. Bought my J97 in 2016, not realizing Carhartt would discontinue it later. Made in USA, great fit, great quality. I now have the new model, the tail sucks ass, the sleeves extend over half of my hands, the shoulders are so damn tight that it causes every shirt I wear to bunch up and it’s uncomfortable. It shipped with a real nice hole in the pocket too…. This company has had a lasting legacy in my family but they’ve turned away from quality made in USA products, to cheap made in China beanies. Disappointing as all hell…
4:51 dude the flap is for it to have more coverage for people who work outside. I like the flap for that same reason. My issue is that they started outsourcing everything, got my first carhartt barn coat with the wool blanket lining at Sunny’s surplus when I was 13. It was USA made and tough as nails, I still were it to this day, I’m 36 now. Worn to work, and as my general coat, still works great. Little faded but still awesome. I got a duck blanket lined Detroit jacket last Christmas, it’s not bad, it is warm, and the lining is softer. Overall it seems ok, we’ll see how it holds up.

My first Carhartt was the Detroit brown duck with satin red lining. My mom gave it to me for Christmas back in 1994. I still have it and still wear it. Although I have a hooded black lined and my dad’s old heavy artic, the Detroit is my favorite.
Ummmm its got a tail because its workwear and men bend over while wearing their jackets so they dont show crack. The sleeves are longer to cover the wrist when reaching..... its first and foremost workwear.
I get what your saying and would totally agree if the durability of the jacket stayed consistent with the previous models, but it decreased dramatically. Don't understand the point of adding all these additional workwear features if the jacket itself is no longer made of workwear material. It is too thin too wear on its own ( At least in Canada). Also for someone whos short like me, the longer sleeves would only create additional hazards in work scenarios. Also since I'm short the butt flap is obsolete, it's just way too low and I don't have any problems with the straight cut backs exposing my "crack". They also had a "Tall" Version of the previous model for lengthier folks. And I'll be honest I am not in a trade, but I do live in a rural area and have to use machinery in the cold pretty frequently. I would be very cold and uncomfortable in the current Carhartt jacket model that's available if that's all I had.
The sleeve are definitely too long. I am a solid medium and no matter how far I stretch, the medium jacket will completely cover my hand. The small jacket has a too tight of a fit, and the sleeve are still uncomfortably long.
It’s low quality crap, I wear carhartt for work and the new Detroit jackets absolutely fucking suck for it, the sleeves are far too long and get in the way. The canvas is dogshit quality and they are so long they get in the way
@callumgill7019 never touched on quality but just that the cut was made to function as workwear. Is there better quality out there?? Def but it's a bit odd complaining about a products design when it's supposed to be utilitarian and not fashion.
tried the WIP one and bought the drop tail one, the carhartt work jacket is far superior and more rugged than WIP stuff, just for looks, the full swing tech on the back is super comfortable and the drop tail is pretty useful, the sleeves however, are long, but as a long armed dude guess I cannot complain
I can easily get a brand new Detroit jacket with the short cut. I have one from work that's company branded and one I wear outside of work. I also have the Carhartt vest from my job (I work in a warehouse in the Pacific North West) that has the drop tail. I'm warm and comfy in the elements at all times so I don't know what you're talking about when it comes to quality. I'm constantly going in and out of the rain, hitting walls and scraping against boxes. I'm also currently looking at the website and as of the date of this post there is a Detroit jacket without a tail. When I wear the short cut the jacket rides up. The drop tail keeps the elements like rain and snow from hitting my jeans. As far as WIP goes, its a European brand made for hipsters. Let them blow their money. This stuff is fine and it should matter.
the tail is just long enough to cover my lower back from touching the frozen car seat every morning in the winter and i love it for that. it gives extra cover for when you have to bend over in cold windy days too, without having to wear a longer coat.
I own the 103828. The label says "Made In India" (wouldn't have bought it, if I had known before). I would say that neither the blanket lining nor the outer material is thin. On the opposite the jacket feels rather stiff and is also quite heavy. Definitely not a jacket for weekly casual wear. Don't know if it's as per original design, but the jacket sleeves have also a thin quilt lining. I was told they added the strip of bum-warmer at the bottom of the jacket as an extra protection for those working in the cold. Not very attractive, I agree, therefore the jacket is not part of my casual outfit.
The sleeves are absurdly long, it has to be an error. I am 5' 6" athletic build, and medium t shirts (or slightly shrunken large) fit me perfectly. The small has an astonishing 35" +/- 0.25" inch long sleeve (when measured from center back of neck to hem of sleeve), the dickies version of this jacket has a 35" inch long sleeve on the XL size, and 32.25" long sleeve on the small.
the point of having the bottom open is when you're sitting down or you're on a motorcycle, is so that the jacket doesn't bunch up, specially when you have a gut. happens a lot with a lot of jackets.
It's definitely not intended for motorcycle riding I have felt the new models in hand, the canvas is so thin you might as well ride the bike butt ass naked
i did say OR didn't i? that means, it could be for that coz when you have a gut, jackets bunch up when you have it closed. that's whata it's for, so you don't look like an idiot when you're sitting down and your jacket bunches up, it just so happens bike jackets have that function that's why i mentioned it. @@GamingEvaluation
I just want to say thank you for your honest and humorous thoughts. The diaper feature is definitely a massive turnoff. I have instead opted for a dickies duck canvas jacket which is a Detroit copy but only costs around $150 new
Truth bomb! I really don't understand the mostly good reviews on the new Detroit Jackets on Amazon, Carhartt and other sites. Seems to most people this is to 100% a fashion statement and they don't care about quality or are not able to distinguish between good and bad. I own one of the new chore coats, they also have this soft blanket lining and it wears down and gets "soggy" after just a few wears. Also stitching at the sleeves is going lose, all after not wearing for 1 season. So sad to see such an iconic brand go south. In my town (in Germany) we even have a WIP store, where all the hipsters go, but as you said, it is expensive af - but I think, the quality here IS a bit better than the new Carhartt workwear stuff.
You're a child? What you call a diaper design, is to keep your back warm stretching and bending as you work outside. A double zipper is designed for a person to unzip the lower part slightly to allow a little extra freedom in the waist while sitting outside and working. Carhartt designs products for function first, not style. Adult men work and have different shapes and sizes than children ... who game in moms basement.
And You're an old man named Gary Czynski with no front teeth whos shaped like a potato? I mean I don't even know where to start with you man, there's no double zipper on the Carhartt jacket with a diaper so those "functions" you like so much don't even exist together. Double zippers are only on the Carhartt "WIP" brand which is strictly fashion and not workwear. The current version of the normal Carhartt Detroit jacket is also its thinnest so good luck keeping your "back" or any part of you warm in it. And you really want to give me that whole "everyone is different sizes" bs? You only have one playlist on your profile and its 80% cooking videos so I know exactly why your ass crack needs extra concealment. Have fun gumming on a twinkly and watching grass grow 😘
@@GamingEvaluation you made yourself look like a fool, and prooved his point of being a snotty child. You'll likely respond with more diarrhea of the mouth.
Great review! You are spot on with this review. The black carharts never retained the color and would turn grey after the first few washes. The problem is early carhart wears (if you worked) peeled the store tags off (no working people keep stickers on their hats or gear.) and we would ball them up and drag them behind our trucks to beat’em up - Or break them in. Want a good old carhart? Hit garage sales downriver.
Carhartt WIP OG Detriot Jacket Winter version (and Carhartt WIP OG Active Jacket of which they have several versions) have very thick, nearly artic level quilt lining. Significantly more than what you would find on the mainline Carhartt version. So they are the warmest versions you will find. That should justify the price a little. You can wear a jacket like this all throughout the winter with a sweater underneath and not feel a thing. I used to own a Carhartt WIP OG Detriot Jacket Winter version for 15 years, from 2000 when I first moved to the Netherlands until 2015. I put on too much weight to fit in it anymore. The main issue with Carhartt WIP is the sizing. The jackets are a much smaller European size so they won't fit bigger people. Other than that, the OGs are just as durable as the mainline versions. And yes, the prices have gone up significantly since I owned mine back in the day. I would say double. It's also much more expensive in North America than it is in Europe due to import taxes. I would suggest going to a store and trying one out for yourself and making a decision based on that. Currently I own a mainline Carhartt Detroit Jacket, a pre 2019 version and a mainline Carhartt Active Jacket J140. However, the blanket lining in the Detroit Jacket is not warm enough to wear on really cold days. The Active Jacket's Quilt Flannel lining fairs a little better but still not ideal. So I switch to a Wellensteyn Starstream (which is even more expensive) on really cold and rainy days. Hopefully, when I loose enough weight, I'll be able to fit in a Carhartt WIP OG again or I might try one of those Canadian, Tough Duck Chore Jackets, nearly identical to the Carhartt WIP OG Detroit Jacket I used to own, this however, should fit me.
If you’re looking to sell your OG jacket and it’s in deep brown you can hit me up! I wanted to order mine today but it’s sold out everywhere in my size😂
Problems for different people. Im a solid 6ft3 and the old tall models always looked like a girls jacket one me. Like the ones they wear where its not meant to buttoned up. It either got too hot to wear while I was working or not enough coverage working out in high wind with 35 degree weather. I wore it for work and fashion for 10 years. There's a company that sells one like the Detroit, but the pocket is on the other side. I can barely walk now and trying to get back into operating. I will wear it for fashion now and love the new fit that I could have for 15 years. lol
The only things I will have tailor add on the lower back tabs. They should kept that fot slimmer wasted people. Reacher is wearing the new one. The sleeves are a dead give away and we are the same height build before he took trt. I do miss the colors option but I know to chemically dye them permanently.
have one from 2009, I love it. I also have an older beanie from them which is warm and thicker, all the new ones I have since then are thin and cheap (woolless)
What most don’t know is that there are several different “GRADES” of Carhartt Detroit Jacket. They are as follows, -Import made with import materials. - Made in Mexico with US materials. - Made in USA with US materials known as the “Helmets to Hardhats” series.
I bought a new Detroit Jacket a few years ago on an impulse and it says made in USA and has a Helmets to Hardhats patch on the inner left side. I was wondering about that. I bought it and hung it in my closet and have never worn it.
I always disliked that they added a flap. I understand why, but couldn’t we have had a jacket and a coat version? I love my old style jacket, but I’d buy a longer coat style quick.
I bought my black J97 new on clearance for $25 in 2007. It's one size bigger than I need, so I only have worn it maybe 5 times in all the years I've had it. Now it's worth $300 easy if I wanted to sell it. Crazy...
I can live with the drop tail because I don't farm with a tool belt much, but can't make myself buy it due to the long sleeves. It looks like I am wearing my big brother's jacket. I left with a Wrangler denim jacket due to the extra arm material.
I agree the new Carhart products blow! With that said, as someone who works in the trades, the drop tail diaper is a welcome addition. Helps prevent having blasts of cold air going up your back as your trying to work.
If I wasn't barely 5,8 and heavy set I would care more for the tail but since I'm short and tend to wear larger sizing anyway the tail is just too long for me with my body shape.
Carhartt should definitly adjust their WORK coat for the people that want to prance around and using i as a fashion style. That said i am 1cm bigger the you and by the looks of it heavier and i wear a size S and with a hoodie size M with perfect fitting sleeves.
I have a j97 from 2008, a c03 from 2004, and a hooded one, (cant remember what its called as it has no tags or logos on and its labeled irregular but seems to fit and be a nice color so idk). Love all 3 of them and use them for work/going out. Only grievance i really have is the c03 is longer even tho its the same size as the other 2 but maybe cropping it to the same length as the j97 may help it
Just paid £60 for the same OG jacket. I haven't paid more than £80 on vintage and all as new. Just purchased the same OG jacket with the camo pattern, brand new for £80! Have have quite a few now! Brilliant jackets, coats and artic parka's!
Love the camo one so much! and I find deals like that all the time in the UK but since I'm in Canada whatever the sale price is will double with customs duties and shipping. so if I found one for £60 that's 100cad plus taxes and duties will be 200 Canadian ;(
I bought the new Detroit version. Sleeves covered my entire hand. No adjusting waist so it’s unusable and freezing if there is a breeze. I think k I might be done with Carhartt. Bought the Yukon extremes jacket. Worst jacket I’ve ever had. Zipper just broke after two years of light use
Carhartt WIP is an european brand, which got a licence to produce stuff under the same name. In the past the logos were a bit different and the used materials as well. I can say the WIP stuff is worse, not the same quality, often thinner fabric and higher prices. Most of my Carhartt clothes are made in mexico and a few in the US, while my bib overall (WIP) is made in Tunisia, has just 8-ounce instead of 12 and no studs at all. Ps. the Detroit jacket was never a really warm jacket, I even got an older one with even a thinner lining, which I just wear in spring and autumn.
agree 100% with this video. The duck tail is absolutely absurd. Its the only think thats stopping me form buying this. At least make an option for the original one.
Anytime fashion gets into work wear, quality drops. It sounds like shady labor. It's not worth it for something that was supposed to be dependable clothing. Don't buy it.
Great video man, it's so hard to find quality made-in-country products anymore. I love comparing older models of the same article of clothing to newer ones. Any videos comparing other popular jackets like ones from Filson, Barbour, Dickies, LL Bean, etc. would be sick. Most of us are buying these via vintage outlets anyway and I appreciate knowing model numbers and production years. I'd rather spend a couple hundred on a quality vintage piece than waste money on a newer, inferior model.
I love Carhartt. I don’t do a manual labour job, so I don’t need the tough wear and tear jackets, but the new collections they have put out have catered to the likes of myself really nicely, with the OG Carhartt brand still making work clothes, win win.
Look for a J02 "arctic lined" jacket instead of a detroit jacket. They are way cheaper and still have the waist and sleeve proportions you want, and they are much warmer because they have a quilted lining.
Hello bro, I am just curious why are you compare carhartt OG Detroit jacketwith WIP Detroit jacket. WIP line is actually Europe company considering fashion brand such as Stussy or levis. if levis makes 90% cotton + 10% spandex jeans still you can understand that right? You will not say bad words that they are not making any 15oz rigid denim for worker. I know OG old version brown leather logo Detroit jacket got famous for fashion because it looks nice, but that is not meaning that carhartt OG have to keep the same way for worker. They were changing clothes almost 200 years for worker, and that is the reason why real worker choose carhartt when we work in construction site. NOT FOR FASHION BRAND
Sorry i think the WIP names might of created confusion, when I'm talking about the OG Detroit jacket model I am referring to the style called (OG Detroit) that is a version of the Detroit jacket that is made by WIP currently. There is no OG version of the main Carhartt brand at the moment, only the newer styles which I don't find to hold up to the quality of the WIP OG Detroit Model. I own the current most updated version of the normal detroit jacket and also own 2 versions of the WIP detroit jackets with one of them being the OG Winter model. I find the OG to have the thickest duck and best construction. I also find it to be heavier and warmer when compared to the current normal brand Detroit jacket ( blanket lined). My issue is that WIP makes a better, warmer, and better constructed jacket that would be more suitable for workers when compared to Carhartt's main line, The closest thing you can buy to an old original brand detroit jacket is the new WIP OG Detroit and I wish that the original brand would just go back to making them the way they were when they produced them in the U.S. Its the equivalent to Levis having a normal brand and a fashion brand where the fashion brand is 15oz denim ( great for outdoor work) and the main line is 8oz cheap denim. It just doesn't make sense the fashion brand should focus on appearance and the main line should focus on quality and being good for working in, not the other way around
There's a fact among everyone commenting including op... None of yall are wholesale purchasing carhartt. At the end of the day, they make the most money off companies that mass buy this jacket for their employees and that's who their audience is. Your single jacket purchase or x amount for ebay won't change their earnings. There's some feedback theyve been getting from noone here that we don't know about and seems like the company's doing just fine.
Lol Robert I was feeling the same way I just can't afford them all. I just posted a short of the one I do have which is the Carhartt WIP OG Winter in Dusty Hamilton Brown😁
5:05 WHY would we want that? Well some of us actually use these work clothes for WORK and were more concerned about functionality over looking pretty and that little flap is nice to have.
I’ve had those older “vintage” models which would almost feel cropped for me when reaching up. Glad they made those changes instead of catering to millennials who would cry if they got a blister on their hands.
There's multiple articles on it in 2022 if you google "Carhartt Vaccines" they will pop up. I read one from CBS, there was a vaccine mandate the CEO put in place but I don't know if it's still standing.

the point of having the bottom open is when you're sitting down or you're on a motorcycle, is so that the jacket doesn't bunch up, specially when you have a gut. happens a lot with a lot of jackets.
WIP?

the one in the early 90s was too short. I loved so much about other elements of it
You're a child?
The navy blue J97 was awesome.
I also have an older beanie from them which is warm and thicker, all the new ones I have since then are thin and cheap (woolless)
i sold an NOS j97 for $159 so you can get nice ones much cheaper than you are thinking
Carhartt wip jackets are worth the price
What most don’t know is that there are several different “GRADES” of Carhartt Detroit Jacket. They are as follows,
-Import made with import materials.
- Made in Mexico with US materials.
- Made in USA with US materials known as the “Helmets to Hardhats” series.
My 103828 Detroit jacket is made in India. Just wonder whether I fell for a copy, although everything else looks and feels original.
I bought a new Detroit Jacket a few years ago on an impulse and it says made in USA and has a Helmets to Hardhats patch on the inner left side. I was wondering about that. I bought it and hung it in my closet and have never worn it.
Double zipper is nice if it’s winter and it’s blowing sideways and you’re taking a leak
You’re totally wrong about the diaper wing. I only buy their jackets that have the diaper
I agree the new Carhart products blow!
With that said, as someone who works in the trades, the drop tail diaper is a welcome addition. Helps prevent having blasts of cold air going up your back as your trying to work.
Was coming here to say exactly that. I'd rather buy American made any day but, the tail flap is great when in the cold/rain.
The WIP is legitimately just a fashion brand as opposed to a workwear brand.
agree 100% with this video. The duck tail is absolutely absurd. Its the only think thats stopping me form buying this. At least make an option for the original one.
Anytime fashion gets into work wear, quality drops. It sounds like shady labor. It's not worth it for something that was supposed to be dependable clothing. Don't buy it.
Love both of mine (duck tan “classic” and in black.) and its kinda all I’ve owned living in Detroit. Hoodie underneath and your good to go
Great video man, it's so hard to find quality made-in-country products anymore.
Made it America doesn't mean its good
I love Carhartt.
If you have troubles finding carhartt in the stores.. buy it online... stocks are way more
Dick's Sporting Goods have a "New" Detroit jacket similar to the j97 but has no corduroy collar.
It's a Carhartt Detroit Jacket
Does it have the drop tail?
@@GamingEvaluation it does not
@@marc1al90 I will try to get one to do a review on
Yea I found that as well. Is it the new 103828?
This is a good video. Felt like Joe Pera was reading to me.
my problem is with measures, they are very different to carhartt and carhartt wip
They still make it in tall sizes. How annoying.
I prefer the new ones. Gimme the diaper tail!
Full Swing Jacket. PRO TIP 👍
the diaper is so we don't see your a$$ when you drop your keys
There's a fact among everyone commenting including op... None of yall are wholesale purchasing carhartt. At the end of the day, they make the most money off companies that mass buy this jacket for their employees and that's who their audience is. Your single jacket purchase or x amount for ebay won't change their earnings. There's some feedback theyve been getting from noone here that we don't know about and seems like the company's doing just fine.
And "carhartt wip" does exist.
Man 99% of the clothes on Grailed and Poshmark look like they were retrieved from dumpsters...absolute nasty wear.
His voice sounds creepy!
Tell me you dont need a Carhartt without telling me you dont need a Carhartt.
Why just not buy a dickie jacket at 99$ just the same as an old carhartt jacket J97.
Dudes hilarious
The collars are also huge on these “ newer “ jackets and it makes them look really tacky.
Great breakdown man 🤝

Why do you have to use inflammable language man, just relax is just a jacket
I found one 15 bucks at vv Today made October 08 . Nice 48 t
Oh no
he's just like me fr
5:05 WHY would we want that? Well some of us actually use these work clothes for WORK and were more concerned about functionality over looking pretty and that little flap is nice to have.
I’ve had those older “vintage” models which would almost feel cropped for me when reaching up.
Glad they made those changes instead of catering to millennials who would cry if they got a blister on their hands.
The problem with Carhartt? The CEO forced all employees to participate in a eugenics medical experiment program. THAT'S the problem with Carhartt!
source?
There's multiple articles on it in 2022 if you google "Carhartt Vaccines" they will pop up. I read one from CBS, there was a vaccine mandate the CEO put in place but I don't know if it's still standing.
Ohhhh, another mentally challenged individual who doesn't believe in vaccines 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
