Just so everyone knows, Carhartt WIP is essentially a completely separate company. They’re based out of Europe, and the Carhartt name is licensed. Carhartt has little to no input/control when it comes to the WIP label.
Went to one In Paris was very surprised to see how much variation it had, it felt far more like a vans tbh, still cool tho

I’m kind of surprised that Levi didn’t find that while making the video. If the quality of the mainline product is slipping then they are likely doing it by choice, rather than having issues with WIP at the same time.
Yup. The WIP line was started by a Japanese streetwear guy in Europe. In fact Carhartt and WIP are considered full on life style brands in Europe and they sponsor all kinds of skateboard events, parks and a team that just release a video.

I have a bunch of Carhartt clothing and I love it. for 16years I worked outdoors on a daily basis and it always held up the best and kept me warm. I'd say they sold out if they stopped making clothing for their primary demographic, they they haven't. they just expanded their catalog to include more fashion and urban focused or hiking items, but if you're a blue collar worker who still needs overalls and a Detroit style work coat, Carhartt is still making some of the best in the business.
Gotta agree with that. Bar none one of the toughest winter coats I’ve ever owned is my carhartt one. I’ve beaten the snot out of it and it’s still getting the bills paid when I need a warm coat. My Santa Fe jacket is the same way. Solid, though I do own a Duluth jacket/shirt that’s pretty solid and well made too
My dad has been a self employed mechanic for the last 30+ years and he always had a Carhartt bomber jacket…three of them actually. His newest one was his “formal” jacket that he’d wear when he took my mom and all us kids out to Swiss Chalet for dinner. The lightly used one would be worn for outdoor chores around the house. Finally the ragged and ripped one would be worn for laying in the snow to cut leaf spring shackles off a rusted out shit box using an oxy-acetylene torch. Growing up, a Carhartt jacket wasn’t something you bought yourself on a whim, it had to be earned. Anyone I saw wearing one automatically earned my respect, because I knew they had a dirty, tiring job in the trades.
i remember a qute story someone wrote on reddit or somewhere about how clothes where used during the times of the iron curtain. bassicly your new stuff was for special occations, when that wore out it became day wear, when that wore out it became house work wear, and when it finally died it because rags.

I know what you mean about earning it. im a bike courier, and it used to be if i saw someone with the bag i probably knew them, that changed fast. i feel like those days are gone, now where is my pilot hat?
That’s sadly no longer the case. Carhartt is the new brand for hipsters and woke clot shot people.
I love my Carhartt stuff for three reasons. Quality, quality, ....and oddly the weird colors that they have, that make them unique, lol. But in the end, quality fabrics are what sells the brand, and I hope they don't ever change that.
Know nothing about their WIP brand, and quite frankly, don't care. I actually like that Carhartt does not let themselves be pigeon-holed into these different classes of buyers, like the rest of the industry. We all are people. They go against the mold and it is working for them, and for us, the consumer. And for the planet overall.
I like how in the comments section I can see they are two demographics. Streetwear enthusiasts and workwear folks. Never thought both of them would meet in the comments section and have a somewhat civil discussion.
Then you have the Chevy silverado carharrt edition. Kinda a mix of both street and work.
I'm a carpenter so I wear a lot of Carhartt by default. I appreciate that over the past few years they are making more clothes that actually fit, that's probably a result of the street wear stuff. All of their clothes used to make me feel like a kid wearing my dad's giant pants. I wish they did more stuff sustainably I've looked at other options but I can't imagine abusing $ Patagonia $ pants like I do Carhartts or dickies

My grandpa wears Carhartt because he likes how it feels and it works for what he wants it to do. Where I grew up in Indiana, it's more for its purpose, than its fashion. He was a farmer for a long while, then dug wells for 15-ish years. Lots of time outside in the elements. He had a coat my whole childhood and into my adulthood, might even still have it, but replaced it a few years back when we got him a new one for Christmas.
That's so wild; I never knew they had a fashion line, either until now. Growing up in Alaska, especially a fishing town, Carhartt has always been the first choice regarding work wear. Although in recent years, I have noticed them come out with brighter clothes that people are naturally drawn to wear as fashion rather than as work wear. I recently bought an up-cycled Carhartt hoodie from an artist online that recycles old Carhartt to make new articles of clothing with what she can salvage. It is definitely more for streetwear than working in, but I love how unique it is compared to anything else I could get from Carhartt. Also, we have a contest/fashion show for Carhartt, but that only occurs in some communities of Alaska.
907 here as well :) My Carhartt coveralls, coat, and bibs are my go-to winter wear items for sure. I'd only recently heard that there was some fashion-related spike in the brand, but I didn't realize the extent until watching this video.
I like coveralls, coats, and bibs that are already somewhat broken in, but anytime I see them at thrift stores up here they're insanely expensive (many times absurd shit like "$50 as is" where a main zipper is broken or something).
Carhartt is all I have ever worn for almost 2 decades and now I work for Carhartt.
I work outdoors year round and have Carhartt pants, jackets and boots. They make fantastic sturdy things. LOVE them.
As a Midwest guy (Minnesota to be exact) EVERYONE wears Carhartt. I'm currently wear a Carhartt T-shirt as I type this. The quality of the clothing is great and everything I own from them has lasted me years.
Carhartt reducing their quality is more of them selling out then Carhartt WIP existing. I don’t understand all the hate on streetwear…
I think it’s because all their energy went into streetwear that they let their core business slip (with much worse durability).

@@MarkPharaoh The two operate separately though. The brand was licensed out to create WIP, that allowed HQ to focus on their workwear and leave the streetwear to WIP. From what I understand the only exchange of money is WIP paying HQ for the license agreement.
Carhart is a brand near and dear to my heart but I do think that they have gone more than just a little off the tracks with all of the randomly branded products ☹️ I hope we get better

Same with Dickies. In Europe it's known as streetwear mostly worn by skaters but in in the United States it's still work gear.
Dickies as skate pants are definitely a thing in North America too, but that's pretty interesting it's not seen as workwear at all in Europe. We'll look further into this, thanks for sharing!!

@@FutureProofTV you can buy Dickies, Carhartt etc. Workwear in germany but many prefere local Brands like Engelbert Strauss. Most of the Workwear Stuff is used as Skater Fashion and the Fashion Lines like Carhartt WIP is more like a hip hop style.
I’ve worn their shirts for years primarily cause they wear well. I think I’ve purchased maybe half a dozen shirts in the last 6 years cause they just hold up
Dickies is the cheap Walmart alternative to carhartt for a midwesterner.
In HS and my 20's, when I was still hanging out with Skaters and Garage Band musicians (some to go on to professional careers in the latter), I never saw ANY Carhartt....it was all Dickies. That was the 90's and early 2000's. It's only recently that I seem to notice this brand at all.
It’s regional too I’ve noticed, even among working people. The Coasts are all about Dickies or Walls while Midwest is Carhartt.

That's a good point! Without actually getting a hold of the products ourselves and doing a side by side comparison it would be hard to say for sure. The claims to quality loss is based off of customer reviews which we can't really use as proof you know? We'll try and provide more details on stuff like this in the future though so thanks for bringing it up!
@@FutureProofTV I can give you a firsthand account that Carhartt women's wear quality has dropped. I used to wear my pants and jeans on the farm for years. I loved them, and they have a lot of great features other brands don't have. Unfortunately I got 9 months out of the last pair of jeans I bought from them. Men's work wear still seems to be about the same, but women's stinks. I'm looking into Deluth, and a few others. Hopefully I'll find quality work wear there.

Almost the exact same video could be made for Timberland. The connection those brands have to street fashion is a little more interesting than this video let’s on. Street level drug dealers tended to be working class people that have also worked in warehouses and construction. Drug dealing involves hanging out on the street in the elements and it doesn’t hurt to look like a normal person on their way to or from work. Why not wear the clothes from that construction job you got laid off from last month. Then the rappers wanted to dress like the drug dealers for the gangster street cred. Then the middle class white teenagers that make up the actual majority of rap consumers want to look like the rappers. And that’s how you get consumerism disguise as antiestablishment. Get your $75 Che Guevara shirt here. (I know $75 Che Guevara shirts aren’t really a thing anymore but you know there is still an equivalent. I’m just too out of touch to know what it is.)
Also, as someone that has worn Carhartt in a heavy industrial environment going back 20 years I give them a meh 20 years ago and a resounding meh now.
Timberland seems to have done the exact opposite. They converted the original line into a fashion company that went up market price wise, which allowed them to slot in Timberland Pro as their work wear stuff for a cheaper price. I have owned exactly one pair of their boots, it is a set of waterproof pros, which after almost 3 years are still waterproof and fully functional.
Growing up in Midwest farm country with a dad who did a lot of heavyduty outdoor work, carhartt was always something that felt reliable, durable, and nostalgic. Dad wore his carhartt gear every day until it couldn't be worn anymore; at least one of them was over 20 years old before he passed in 2015.
I moved into downtown Chicago in 2017 for art school, and I was surprised and a little weirded out by all the people wearing carhartt just... as fashion. Dad and mom had criticized the rich using 'new worn' clothes for fashion, but where I grew up I never really saw it outside magazines.
I'll always associate carhartt with the comfort of those days, wearing dad's big heavy carhartt work coat like a blanket when it was cold and he'd sacrificed it so i could be a little warmer.
I had a date who works in the bush and hates the cold. All of his stuffs are Carhartt and that makes me curious about their quality. So one day I bit the bullet and bought their iconic hoodie in a lilac color at their full price 🤯 and I wasn't disappointed. That hoodie was my comfort clothing that I wore the entire fall to winter. Workwear quality x Streetwear design is a sweet collaboration.
I love the Carhartt WIP pants for skating because they hold up quite well, but unlike their competitor Dickies, the WIP pants come in organic cotton. Durability is important for both skating and sustainability, but if I can get durability with more sustainable fabrics, that’s a big win in my book.
I saw the Carhartt label on a person in the city and thought that it was Cruchyroll. Never heard of Carhartt before, having lived for half a century in Europe.

I decorate apparel(screen print, embroidery, dtf) & carhartt is a popular choice for small businesses for the reasons you listed. It’s frustrating though because the blanks have been sold out for months, saving this to help explain to clients.
I've recently started buying carhartt gear and it's some of the best quality clobber I've graced my skin with. Well worth the money.
I always say I can tell if someone is an outdoor person by the way they wear there carhartt beanie and I will always stand by that statement

i have a carhartt wallet that has lasted me 6 years so far. it's solid, has plenty card slots, 2 bill folds, and the stitching has yet to break at all.

I wear Carhartt shorts to work everyday and they hold up about a year to 1 1/2 and I have a arctic wear jacket that close to 30 years old.

I wear the workwear line stuff a decent bit and it's been great quality stuff. I dunno if it's not as good as in generations prior as I don't have any vintage Carhartt stuff, but it's definitely better quality than most of what's in my closet.
As a cabinetmaker, I tried buying some carhartt pants a couple years ago. I alternated through the 2 pairs and shredded holes through both within 5 months. It was extremely disappointing for the relatively low intensity of my work.
As much as I love my Carhartt gear, I’d argue that Patagonia’s workwear offerings are better quality overall. Paying a premium for good quality garments that will stand the test of time will always be worth it in my opinion.
Patagonia also isn't nearly as accessible. I can go and buy Carhartt shit from my local hardware store but most importantly try it on. To purchase Patagonia workwear I have no option other than ordering from the website and hoping it fits.

@@TimeQuxxn But since we are on this channel ordering multiple clothes and returning them isn't very environmentally friendly. At the very least the carbon footprint from transporting to someone and back is significant when so many do it. Patagonia hopefully uses as much of the returned clothes as possible atleast

Carhartt WIP and Carhartt Workwear are 2 different companies. WIP is the product of a licence granted to a Swiss company in the late 80’s. That’s why you have thinks like margarita glasses and Bluetooth speakers… these are all WIP. The Guineas and Batman colabs were workwear.
Carhartt WIP is hard. Just copped the stetson black denim jacket and it's an exceptional piece.

I still have a pair of Carharrt work shorts with cargo pockets, a hammer loop, and some other loops to hold tools. I bought it for cheap at a Marshall's in 2005 then wore them while fixing up my house in New Orleans after it was flooded after Hurricane Katrina. I never knew they had a whole non-work related fashion line and never knew about the history as streetwear. The story about drug dealers wearing the coats is similar to how Timberland boots became popular African-American streetwear after they were worn by drug dealers standing around in the cold then being popularized by rappers. There was a story that Timberland's CEO said he didn't want to see Black people wearing their boots, but Snopes reports that as a false story. Both Carharrt and Timberland have obviously embraced their products being appropriated by a whole different group of consumers.
I thrift my carhartt for re sale or for personal and will wear them for casual wear and work love them in both ways
For the Tommy Boy jacket I guess you can say it’s the “first one” but not necessarily. Nobody actually coined the term “Streetwear” back then but regardless Tommy Boy was just a record company. I’d give that title to Stussy cause they were an actual brand. Shawn Stussy designed the front I believe and after working on this he would constantly make unofficial custom embroidered carhartt pieces back in the day. Tommy Boy didn’t become an actual clothing entity until after the success of the jacket.
My mother almost only watches Rom-Coms and can confirm they are either full work gear in the city or full suit and dress shoes in a field.

6:43 this was the european skateboard team (mostly germans) and it has not so much to do with the original Carhartt brand, since the european offshot is an own company who got a licence deal in 96 to produce their own clothing line. The founder is a swiss guy and the company is based in germany, because of tax and duty reasons. :D
There are only two RUclips channels that I'm familiar enough with to go check if they have a new video out. This is one of them. About fifteen minutes ago, I was like "dang-- it's Wednesday. I wonder if the new Future Proof video is out," and it was. Cool. I don't especially love the sustainability segments of the videos (I mean, I don't hate them; it's just not something that's super important to me), but as I watch more of these videos, I'd say my interest in the subject has gone from 1/10 to 2/10. Maybe it'll keep climbing. Anyway, great video as always.

I actually didn't know Carhartt had become a streetwear brand. I live and grew up in the piedmont area of NC and the school I went to was the "redneck school" and a lot of people I went to school with 10-14yrs ago, wore Carhartt constantly. For my school it was the jackets in the winter. But those people who wore that (were really country) and also probably worked on a farm or at least did a lot of stuff outside, worked on their families tractors or trucks or wore it hunting. Many of the guys had the Carhartt pants as well. I got one as well, one of sherpa lined ones that was a dark mauve color and had a brown collar. I got the cheapest one because I just wanted something to fit in but I really should have gotten one with a hood. But I liked it because it was really warm without making me feel like a floof. And I ended up wearing it when I went to help my dad (mostly clearing land and doing yard work in the winter). I actually don't know where that jacket went.
Honestly I remember when those carhartt beanies where the rage like 2 or 3 years ago they were a bestseller at Amazon and I didn't get why they were so popular trends i guess.

Been in construction for 16 years it used to be all I wore on the job. Now their workwear is cheap poorly made trash. The last work pants I bought lasted 3 months. I have a pair that’s probably 7-8 years old that still held up.
I just like their t-shirts because they are heavy and I find them comfy like no other T
But yes, even the quality of the T-shirts have gone down the drain in quality. New ones don’t last as long as my originals. And they definitely gotten lighter

My entire wardrobe is basically all Carhartt. It's high quality and the logo is known for being more on the expensive side. You dont see many broke people wearing Carhartt. I like the workwear look to my everyday cloths but I also wear it for work. I'll probably always wear Carhartt unless they change the quality. They need more lightweight shirts. Most are heavyweight and not great in summer. They make some middleweight shirts and they are great.

I think actual Carhartt is still trying to stick to it's roots focusing on mainly workwear, the WIP sub-brand is the definition of selling out. Their prices are ridiculous when most of the items are just remix'd versions of Carhartt staples

Their boots are some of the worst that are made.
There's been a huge drop in the quality of sewing and materials, so they wear out a fraction of the time of their old stuff. Quality is on par or below less well known workwear brands that cost 1/3-1/2 the price.
@@kingedwin Dunno, as a longtime Carhartt WIP user I didn't really notice any significant drop in quality over the years. As for the price... Well yeah kinda overpriced for what it is, but still cheaper than say Stussy or god forbid Supreme.

I work in the HVAC field, wore alot of Carhartt when I first started. But after I discovered Wolverine I've never looked back. Quality is better especially the big winter coat and boots. Wolverine hasn't lost touch with the working man yet and it shows in every product.

I wear carhartt in the winter and camping in the cold/wet environment. Works wonders when it’s wet, windy and 30 degrees. 30 is cold for me, I’m an Arizona desert rat.
Under a purely capitalist system, doing anything for more money is the responsible thing to do. Screw that noise. A business doesn't have to become all consuming to be "successful". The idea that a business has to always be growing is toxic and impossible. There are only so many humans to buy the goods after all. In fact, I don't even think that a business closing after their customer base goes away is a bad thing. What is important is having a metric to measure by that isn't based purely on "numbers go up" because numbers can't go up forever.

This might be my most favorite video as of right now. Was definitely into the whole streetwear fashion skate scene (technically I still am). I've started realizing the environmental (and personal finance) effects, so this is quite personal to me. Changed from wearing Carhartt WIP, thrasher, filling pieces and everything in between to literally donating it all away and just having 5 black tshirts and 4 black trousers so I can practice being more mindful of my purchases and having a deeper connection with the items I currently have and just enjoying my hobbies and passion (which luckily is also my job).
