Charcuterie Board with Parota and Friends

- In this video, a big hefty charcuterie board is made, and wow, the grain is really something!
This project highlights a variety of woodworking tools in use, including a makeshift track saw design that I did on the fly.
Parota is the star, but the costars are doing their job well as supporting cast. Figured Maple, Black Walnut, and Sapele.
I'd love to know what you think of the finished product!
In this Video, I show you the RZ 2.5 Mask. Super nice, reusable, replaceable inner filter, no mask fogging, and comfortable. It's made in America by a company that gives back and cares about your lungs. Maybe most importantly, you get a quality product at a very low cost.
Check it out here: tidd.ly/3oHr5gU

Rod, another beautiful work. I hope the recipient of that piece watches this video so they can appreciate the work that went into it.
I chuckled as you were working, thinking "is he using my shop when I'm out of town" because we have the same planer, jointer, and drum sander. And, although it didn't show, your dust collector sounds like mine.
I've been working over the years to build up my shop with good machines. Here's a piece of advice for possibly younger workers. When I take on a new project at home, I tell the wife "here's what we'll save by me doing it versus hiring someone, but I'll need to buy a new tool for it". The cost is a small percentage of the savings. Plus, the quality is better because I determine when it's "good enough".
Elegant and stylish. A very handsome piece that would grace any dining table.
Beautiful wood, nice design
Thank you very much, Chet!
Wow! That is stunning! I need to show this to my husband, he makes charcuterie boards and cutting boards! Love watching you Rod! Have a wonderful weekend, God Bless my friend.
Thanks very much, Jane!
Rod,
The grainmeister strikes again! That is one beautiful chunk of wood!
Keep the aspidistra flying!
Semper fi.
God bless,
Paul
Much appreciate, Paul!
Very beautiful sir have a great weekend ✌️
Thanks, you too, Cookies!
I think that's perhaps the most beautiful woodworking item I've seen on RUclips, Rod, and I've seen a lot. The extra banding down the middle really sets it off. I have the advantage of having lived in France for many years and charcuterie is cold cooked and cured meats normally cut very thinly. It's a very skilled job and one who engages in it is a charcutier. All supermarkets have a charcuterie counter but I preferred the family-owned shops where the skills had been handed down through generations. Charcuterie is hugely popular and the board is ideal for slicing and presenting it. The most highly skilled aspect of charcuterie is drying raw ham and slicing it very thinly. A little glass of white chilled wine helps a lot. Cheers.

Wow, Alan, thank you so much! That is a huge compliment and though I feel unworthy of it, I do appreciate it. I've visited France on my travels with the Marines, trained with the regular army as well as the Foreign Legion. I enjoyed all of the above very much, but especially the legion...
Very beautiful.
Thank you, Alison!! 😊
Fantastic job on that one Rod.
Thanks, Kevin! Always appreciated!
Gorgeous!
Thank you! 😊

Thank you so much for that, John! You're very kind.
What workmanship ❤ it kind of reminds me of some Navajo pattens I’ve seen.

Much appreciated, Shirley Ann!
You’ve made a southwestern style board worthy of any adobe home. Labor intense, beautiful results. Nice work. How about a tour of your shop? See all those ‘toys’ and layout?
So beautiful, Rod! This board is a work of art, Friend. 🙏🏻❣️
You have done it again! The most beautiful woods with an amazing design. A truly gifted artist.
Your shop is incredible, i can't believe all the wonderful machinery you have assembled
I know it didn't happen overnight! As always, God Bless and Thank You for sharing, Sir.
Thank you so much, Joyce! 😀 I appreciate you saying so. Projects like this one allow me to use more of my tools, and you're quite right... it's taken years to gather the tools I have. I'm very thankful to all of you for helping make that happen.
Great work. It looks really nice with the accents between the boards
Thanks, David, I appreciate that!
Board came out gorgeous! Another stunner Rod! Well done and take care.
Very striking combination of woods. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely gorgeous charcuterie board Rod.

Thank you so much 😀
Absolutely gorgeous! That grain is beautiful!
Thank you very much!
I am just a poor West Texas boy and did not know what the heck a charcuterie board is. So I had to look it up. That’s a mighty fine piece of wood you put together with a Southwestern design along the edges. I like it and learned something new in the process. Who sez ya can’t teach an Old Devil Dog new tricks? Ya learnt me real good MSgt Humphrey.😱
👍👍👍👍👍

Excellent work and yeah the woodgrain completely changed!
Thank you so much! It's always a treat at the end to see that grain pop with the finish! 😊
Oh my....beautiful design and finished product!❤
GReat way to get rid of some of your leftover wood stash! Absolutely gorgeous! I hope it is a gift to your lovely wife!! 😁
I used a lot of newly acquired wood for this one but was able to incorporate some wood from my stash too... always nice to justify my hoarding, lol! No, this one is going to a Marine, an officer and gentleman that I greatly respect.
@@RHumphrey Well I hope he enjoys it in good health! As a knitter, I hear you about adding new stuff to old. I am always trying to use up my wool stash but end up having to buy new wool to do so lol..!
Hi Rod this is a beautiful piece Craftmanship. I love the way you change from one craft one week to a differant craft the next.
Thank you very much, Russell! As much as I love the lathe, I need to change things up a lot to maintain my creativity and desire to make videos. Thanks for the positive feedback!
another great piece!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful work! Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!

HI MR R that's one beautiful bd. weldone
Thanks very much!
Very beautiful that! Also just an FYI I love when you do something completely different.....I mean I love watching you turn but I kinda figured like worst of us you do the wood projects and Like seeing those two.
Thank you very much, Broody, much appreciated!
Beautiful,
Crazy idea how about making board games but when you turn it over it's another game on the other side
Great idea! I'll percolate on that one... Thank you!
Awesome can I have it. Lol
Thank you, haha! It's been claimed already 😊
Good morning, Rod.
Gorgeous project for us to witness today. A bunch of steps, thoughts before and during the build along with the enjoyment of the finished piece. The veneer added the detail to set this board apart from many others. Believe I would grab a chair and simply reflect on the beauty this eye catching board.
I have used tung oil as a finish on a cutting board and the lady who received it didn't care for the smell. Wondering if that is the reason the orange oil was added. I know your mentioned you were following a procedure used by another craftsman.
Thank you, brother.
God bless + S/F
Good morning, Ray! My nose (on my face mostly for decoration...) didn't pick up on a bad smell, but the orange solvent is nice. It also thins out the oil and allows better penetration. All 100% food safe with a durable quality, which was my goal. Yes, the Wood Whisperer is a channel I follow, Marc Spagnuolo is a gifted craftsman. Thank you and Semper Fi!
@@RHumphrey Thanks. I went to
his channel and found the video regarding the orange solvent.
By the way, the lady had a great sense of smell because her husband and I couldn't smell the tung oil but she wouldn't let the cutting board on her house.
Love the finish! Only question is whether the board might be a bit on the heavy side.
As others have said: It's a beautiful board. Very nice wood selection and design. Very nice use of the veneers. And you were dead on about the center accent. The tung oil finish is perfect. Production is good. The board does look a bit heavy to me. How thick did it finish out? Overall you get 👍👍for this project. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you so much, Glen! Very much appreciated!
That is amazing art work, as always. How many coats did you use? That grain is just beautiful. The way you can match wood together is an art in itself. Thank you for the video!
Thanks very much! I stopped at two coats. Was going to do three but it just doesn't need another.
Did he ever say what Finnish he used? Whatever it was, it certainly made the wood pop.
I did show it, bottles and all 😊 Food safe oil, couple coats.
Beautiful work! I'm starting to get wood together to make my first cutting board. How many coats of the finish did you use?
I think it is beautiful. How much did it weigh? It just looks heavy.
I didn't weigh it, but it is a hefty one by design. I did choose a lighter in weight exotic wood though, so it wouldn't be like going to the gym to serve up a board of food, lol 😊
Amazing piece, as always. I have been periodically checking your Etsy shop, do you plan on selling anymore pieces?
Thanks very much! I' have a really pretty bowl listed there now, the one I completed a couple weeks ago on video... plus a couple engraved and finished plaques. I will still be listing items, yes. Anything you're looking for in particular?
@@RHumphrey yes sir, I saw that bowl and it is beautiful but a bit big for what we need. Do you do commissions or how can i request something like that? Your pieces are so beautiful and I would like to surprise her with a piece.
@@flopwadwadsworth3059 please feel free to email me at rhumphrey.woodworking@gmail.com to let me know what you're looking for. I rarely do commissions but you never know... I am going to list/relist a variety of items soon, some from previous video projects and some not. Thanks!
What is a charcuterie board used for??
Food presentation for the most part 😊
Absolutely beautiful! How many layers of oil did you add before the wood said “done”? Does one have to match the wood’s porosity to obtain an even finish? Amen to Romans 10 Verse 9! Our pastor is preaching in Romans right now! God bless you! Thank you for your service! Semper Fi!
Thank you very much, Ellen! Just two layers did the job. It's good to try and keep the wood of a similar hardness, to keep natural movement in the wood at bay, but I don't really consider the porosity.
Beautiful!
Thank you, Lynda!
Beautiful
Thank you, Scott!
