The GX is being built at Lexus's best plant in Japan. It'll receive the best quality control Toyota can muster. So the complaints about Toyota reliability shouldn't apply here. However, the Defender has the same reliability issues that all JLR products are known to have. Love the Defender design inside and out, but I can't enjoy what I can't depend on and reliably drive. Especially as a guy who buys to hold onto for a while. I'll be buying a GX Overtrail+.

I’m turning in my Defender in a few weeks! Got it brand new. Decided to lease and I’m glad I did because we had to have it towed to the dealership at least five times. Stop driving in the middle of the road for apparently no reason. Multiple times the car wouldn’t start. Worst part is that I continued to pay the lease while driving their rental for weeks on end. As much as I love how beautiful the car is, I would never get another Landrover. It was a nightmare.

I own a 2021 Defender X 110. My engine is the same as you tested in this video. However, my Defender has a electrically powered super charger that accelerates quite quickly and once the lag of the turbo has been diminished the Super charger turns over the acceleration requirements to the Turbo charger. It is a seamless turn over so the acceleration curve is quite consistent and most impressive. Are you telling me your demo did not have a supercharger?!?!? I find that hard to believe.
Seems some your commenters had some problems with their Defender. Our Defender has been completely failure free. I find a bias that is strange. I have owned 4 RRS, 1 Discovery Sport(still have) and the Defender. NO PROBLEMS with any of our vehicles. The RRS's were all Super charged too.. My reliability has been AWESOME, SUPERB, FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Over-landing and off-roading in the Defender cannot be beat. It goes everywhere and is quite sophisticated on how it conquers the terrain and obstacles.

There’s literally no comparison in how much more useable & comfortable the Defender is inside, and how much smoother the ride & better the handling is vs the Lexus-even off road.
Neither is a bad choice but if Lexus & Toyota had not gone so archaic again, moved to a more spacious all independent platform, etc the GX would be even more popular, spacious, smoother, etc.
I’ve driven both extensively now. Love Lexus dealers & vibes, and own 2. But if I had to pick, I’d go Defender too and give up that stereotypical reliability “thing” because it’s just so much nicer to drive. And we have multiple local LR dealers, so no difference in loaners, etc. My current last gen GX has had so many issues itself, no brand is immune.
    Great review, Ben, as always💯

Well Lexus sells the TX, for someone who wants a more comfortable and spacious ride, the GX is solely targeted at the off-raoding scene, which is why the GX remains body-on-frame, it is better off-raod, now will most people use it for its off-road capability?, probably not, but Lexus doesn't have to compromise the GX, when they have the TX, NX and RX

1000000% agree, Defender is sooo much smoother to driver + no carpet which is very important for an off road car. In general Defender is much luxurious, interior is sturdy and minimalistic, masculine and feminine at the same time. GX has good potential , but interior quality is not even close to Defender. I've found that the Defender is/has: better on-road, better off-road and way better traction control, more modern and rigid spatial structure, better suspension, better infoscreen software and dash controls, faster, way better interior and more internal space. Lexus / LandCruiser: more "traditional", with those one hundred and fifty years old rigid rear axle and ladder frame chassis.

My assessment is based on what I observed at the Auto Show in California. For comparing this SUV, I recommend examining others. To attend, both my wife and I had to pay a $30 fee, and I was particularly eager to personally see the Lexus GX due to the hype surrounding it as a large off-road SUV.
Before I outline the positives and negatives, I want to express my anticipation spanning decades for the GX to unveil a new design. However, I am disappointed with what I encountered.
    Pros:
    * The shape is commendable, featuring a perfect boxy design akin to competitors such as the Defender, Jeep Cherokee, and GMC.
    * While the central infotainment system is not groundbreaking, it maintains consistency with other Lexus models, which is acceptable.
    *
    Cons:
    * There are numerous drawbacks. The model I viewed exceeded $77k and lacked the ML sound system.
    * The absence of a panoramic sunroof, now a standard feature in modern vehicles, detracts from the luxurious experience.
    * The panoramic sunroof in the Luxury+ model is underwhelming and seems to mimic the idea from the Venza, which has been on the market for over six years.
    * The quality of leather and interior falls short compared to other SUVs in the same price range. Even the Toyota Highlander boasts superior interior quality.
    * The exterior feels excessively plastic, particularly upon contact with the bumper, hood, and other body panels.
    * Leather quality across all trims is subpar.
    * Fuel economy poses a significant issue in 2024, averaging only 17 mpg.
    * Many materials exude a cheap feel, failing to deliver a luxurious experience.
    * If one opts for all available options on the Lexus GX 550, it may be preferable to choose the LX 600, which offers a higher level of luxury and power.
    * For a better depiction of luxury, consider examining the Infiniti QX80: ruclips.net/video/NMzD7nLQlDY/видео.html
I've been a longtime enthusiast of this SUV, but now, even surpassing $80k plus tax, it's hardly worth the investment. In 2024, there's a myriad of alternative options I've contemplated, including the Ford F150 Electric, Rivian, Cybertruck, GMC Denali AT4, Sequoia, and the Volkswagen Atlas Off-Road version, among others, boasting advanced technology and commendable qualities.
Toyota and Lexus seem to be marketing very basic vehicles under the guise of reliability. Many individuals I conversed with at the auto show shared my sentiment that the GX 550 pales in comparison to the 460 in terms of quality, feeling cheaply constructed.
It appears that RUclips influencers may be sponsored by Toyota and Lexus, with many Toyota dealers hyping these vehicles on social media to attract buyers.
This SUV no longer epitomizes luxury, not by a long shot. If you disregard reliability and juxtapose it against brands like BMW, Audi, and Land Rover, it's disheartening to witness its decline.
Purchasing this vehicle entails enduring it for another six years solely to mitigate depreciation, while numerous other automakers are already introducing superior and more advanced technology.
At present, I must explore alternative options, as this SUV is not worth $85k out of the door, if you're fortunate enough.
Best wishes with your new purchase. Just bear in mind, many individuals are compensated for endorsing Toyota and Lexus brands, and I've encountered numerous instances of Toyota dealers leveraging social media to generate interest in these vehicles.
In conclusion, this is merely my perspective. Enjoy your new purchase

I don’t get why people complain about Range Rover reliability? The people who are driving these vehicles including my parents don’t get these and care about reliability. My parents love there defender 130 we don’t really care about reliability since it’s a lease or under business write off. Lexus is good if you’re keeping a vehicle forever but you can’t say the quality in Lexus is better except for reliability. For those who know about deals or brokers would know that the Range Rover lease is cheaper than Lexus. The new GX is $1200 a month while Range Rover is the same or even under with less down.

Well, Range Rover and Land Rover typically have really nice interiors because they want you sitting comfortably during the long wait for the tow truck, this way you'll be less pissed off when you arrive at the the dealership to discuss your broken brand new Defender. It's sad that their so poorly made given the price point because their so nice, like a high maintenance pretty spoiled rotten shallow vein girlfriend that was allot of work and money that you grew tired of when you realized it wasn't worth it and you gotta bail on her ... lol

Hit the nail on the head, Lexus is compromised, luxury trying to be rugged off road and it doesn't work, and how old school does that Lexus interior look already 🙈
Even with its reputation for reliability issues, which JLR are really addressing on new models, its got to be the Defender, also way more street cred 🧊😎👌
