I was on the waitlist for the Lexus, but ended up with a pre-owned Defender 110 with the P400 engine. Quality feels better on all fronts, great ride, no issues whatsoever. I tow a 27’ camper with it and it rides like a dream.

While it’s rated to tow over 8000lbs, the payload capacity is less than the usual 10% margin. I wouldn’t take it over 700lbs at the hitch. With your needs you may want to consider a larger more capable SUV than the Defender or GX in my opinion. Perhaps the Sequoia.

I actually looked at a GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate and altho I'm not a pickup truck guy I was very impressed with that interior it was nicer than the Lexus GX. How is that possible.. damn
Recovery hooks are underneath. So you need to learn to get on those pretty knees and look under a truck platform for once lol I’d love both in my driveway.

I respect your personal opinion; However this is not a fair comparison It's just showing the Lexus's GX flaws versus the Defender's advantages. Even when there’s a positive point with the Lexus GX you say it in a very low tone or just bypass it even the well known good features you make it sound as something bad; one example everyone considers setting high is a plus for an SUV you made it something bad or a flaw. I hope you accept my criticism.

Complains about recovery points, followup scene pans around the front to show recovery points. Complains about Lexus plastic rear bumper cover being flimsy, proceeds to flex the plastic bumper cover on the defender. Complains about the $64,000 starting price of the Lexus but doesnt point out that the Defender hes testing is nearly twice as expensive. A fully loaded GX isnt even as expensive as a midrange Defender. A GX is far more likely to be used for its intended offroad design by its first or 2nd owner. A current gen Defender will not for obvious reasons. A defender is a very nice SUV to put around in while looking like you can go offroad where the GX is a offroad truck first with luxury tacked onto it. A throwback style of the 90s era of SUVs a lot of people still crave. While the Lexus has somr questionable elements like the aluminum clam shell hood and the ugly wart that covers the hitch receiver, everything else is solid. I'd prefer a V8 under the hood though.

I’ve been noticing that throughout the automotive world. If 1 journalist or reviewer says a new performance sedan is too heavy, then the comments are gonna be about the vehicles weight and nothing else same as with a vehicle’s reliability and that’s before the vehicle is even released. Let’s not forget some years ago Fords were regarded and IN MY OWN OPINION still are trash and unreliable, but that hasn’t stopped anyone from buying them. Now watch all the Ford owners chime in about how reliable their car or truck has been over the years. I’ve owned a 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan ( Basically a Ford Taurus) for 2 years and that sh.. was an electrical nightmare. If we all listened to or really valued a reviewer’s opinion we’d all be driving Hondas and Toyotas since they’re the MOST RELIABLE vehicles in existence.

What a disappointment the Lexus is. They've had so much time to design a superior vehicle and all they did was rebadge the new Land Cruiser. Lackluster performance, marginal quality (the body panel gaps are inexcusable, so too is the fluttering hood. The tinny metal is not what a Lexus should be and certainly not what a Lexus should cost.

@@m3forlife673 None of the engines being replaced were in GX 550's. I believed they were put in 22/23 trucks and LXs. A black mark to be sure. But JLR has earned their reputation for sketchy reliability over many decades. I'd like to see what the long term stats are on these Defenders. They been around long enough to have built a reputation one way or the other.

Thanks for doing this & i only partially agree! were you comparing the defender v8 against the gx? I believe the pricing in the US is >$100k with nicer interiors. I like the gx engine better compared to the regular engine of the defender and interiors at that price level are comparable.
@SamCarLegion I have tired both. To be honest, for 100k I would buy the Defender. The interior and doors r ways better and solid. But I am always been a Toyota fan.....very hard to decide. I have learned hard ways from America cars.
It’s been 3 years that i have the defender With 65000km on it with 0 prob for now My lease is ending and I think I will take another one but the 130 for more space. That car is just a beast in any situations! Very capable, feels strong, comfortable and luxurious!

I dove both and decided to go with GX550, much better looking car IMO.
The version of defender he is driving is a lot more than the gx ....
It’s just an engine upgrade, car remains the similar at p400 level.

The engine is robust and reliable, just debris left inside could make stalled engine. Toyota will replace 110 l+ of those engines for new ones.
The Land Rover screams status symbol. I'm sure they have a Neiman Marcus parking lot spec

The GX550 is the only contender here. That plastic Land Rover is 🗑️ and has a very short life expectancy.
