The 2020 Defender 110 P400 SE Rocks. Two long trips from Atlanta to Eureka, California and twice to NYC without one single issue. Knock on wood. Take care of your Land Rover and it will take care of you. I currently have 35,500 miles on a 2020 daily driver.
Maybe… However my Lexus LX470 has 340k miles.. and I daily drive that. I’m looking at the gx550, the LC and the defender 130. I feel like the defender will be a mistake
Prior to getting my Defender, I looked at the Lexus and Land Cruiser, and I felt that the Defender was much better inside, more durable and comfortable. I ended up getting the Defender 110 P400 Inline 6 and it's been really solid so far, with an very quick and reliable infotainment system. As for the Land Cruiser 1958 model, it was very low end inside. The interior of the Defender, in my opinion, is much better then the Toyota offerings.
Defender is super nice! Very impressed with the ride quality and interior. The Land Cruiser 1958 is basic and cheap feeling. But the normal trim is pretty nice for the money. Still won't be on par with a European interior tho
The land rover has a monocoque chassis while this is a ladder frame so the gx driving that well is seriously impressive. I think I’m off-roading the ladder frame gx may edge ahead
Yeah like I mentioned in the video you can get a $70k Defender to equally compare to the GX. This is what I had to work with. V8 having more power would be the only difference I would have been able to talk about. So the vid would fundamentally be the same
I think the Overtrail in two tone looks better then the one shown here. Not a fan of that retro look for the defender. Just a rehash of the last gen which looks better in my opnion. Its a bit like the new mini vs old, old wins all the time. Its hard for the Lexus to compare with the model shown because that model will obviously have a higher grade of material. I will say from experience because I've driven both models that at same price point the Lexus looks and feels a lot better. Drive wise I would edge it to the defender but only in ride quality not performance.
Yeah two tone looks great on these! Even the $70k Defender will be about identical to this V8. Really just the engine thats different. I think the European refinements show in the Defender over the Lexus. But you get better reliability in the Lexus. So a toss up to be honest
its should be GX Overtrail in this comparison, plus everyone knows the GX OT is the hot commodity right now, the 24 are still on back order. The defender is sitting on lots by the tons, plus the reliability of the lexus especially the Overtrail is a no brainer, even paying over MSRP its still cheaper than a Defender that will fall part at 50K miles.
This is what I had to work with. Not exactly easy to get a GX and a Defender alongside to make a video. Overtrain is nearly the same vehicle with just a few changes. You get the overall idea of how these compare. But yeah the Lexus will probably hold better value and reliability long term
@@BrosFOURRSpeed fair response, but the overtrail has EKDSS suspension, rear diff locker along with the standard center diff, and off road technology assist and tires that the other models dont have. So if you were to an off road comparison, then yes for sure.
Yeah if I was off roading that'd be nice. But for a quick on road test drive, I wouldn't have noticed a difference. Overall this video shows what in general you can expect comparing these two
I have a 2022 90 P400 that has been hunting in Texas, on two cross country trips and daily commutes. Most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I liked it so much I just bought a 2024 Carpathian Edition V8.
It's surely attractive. But it's only two years old and you are really only considering short-term build quality and reliability. And you are already flipping it for a new model under warranty. Not a real confidence builder.
There is no V6 defender. One of the engine choices is an i6. So far the new defenders had been pretty reliable and its been out for several years now. Get the Octa version

@@LetsGo-wf1dy the AJ v8 in the defender from jaguar is a very reliable engine - it was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2000 the N63 v8 in the octa from bmw has been widely noted for its mechanical issues, undergoing several recalls
@@BrosFOURRSpeed I mean, it does not have the premium looks which Lexus should have, especially the interior. It looks like Toyota branded car, like land cruiser 250. Not enough differentiation.
@@ks-vq5er yea all Toyotas have a similar interior, but that’s no different than other brands. Just depends on what the buyer wants. I’d go GX over the defender because it’ll last longer.
Lexus doesn’t have the payload to tow or its full capacity - tow ball weight will max out your payload, so inferior for towing heavy loads. Lexus has smaller fuel tank and doesn’t have a diesel option - so range (particularly when towing) will be extremely limited, so inferior here too. So, if towing heavy loads - Lexus GX is not an option at all.
The GX can handle 6,000 pounds pretty well tho. Neither of these is really ideal for super long haul towing tho. More of a vehicle to buy for recreational towing like a boat to your local lake or utility trailer
@@jwz-y6wthat may be the case but the point I was trying to make was WRT the limited payload of the GX. If you are towing close to max specification, then this results in a large tow ball weight transferred to the vehicle which when you add to weights of driver, passengers, fuel and some luggage- you max out the GX payload well before that of the Defender.
With all due respect terrible comparison like comparing a 3 series bmw to a 7 series - to do a comp you have to compare similar price points - what is next a corvette to a Camaro ?
If the Defender had the 6 cylinder it'd be the same price point as the GX. As I mentioned in the video. These are direct competitors and I wasn't really comparing the power between the two. I was showing most of the features and interior along with ride quality. The $70k Defender will be the same as this V8 aside from the engine. I mentioned all that in the video
Purely based on looks, the Defender is leagues ahead. Especially the interior. Infotainment system.
Yeah the inside is a step up for sure. Looks really cool with fantastic materials!
Yeah but at what cost. The handover is $40k more and have you seen the basic defender interior you don’t get that same feel.
