No one mentioned it...the vet had a laff...filled it with oil before fitting drain plug...had a bloody good laff...BUT...an EXCELLENT strip and re build. I had a Mini 1000 for 11 years back in 70s. I cut my teeth on home maintenance. Now service my 340i m sport. Brilliant...thanks.
Lovely to see this. I rallied a Cooper S in the 70s when these werent classic cars. Brings it all back. I had 95 bhp at the wheels. 1298, S thick flange block, Longman Head, 649 cam, straight cut CR box with LSD. 45 DCOE Weber. i remember going the factory when they had a sale because Special Tuning got closed down. Wish I still had it. happy days.
Love the fact they cut to trying to pull the flywheel and suddenly it was done! I needed 2 sets of pullers (first broke) and a length of scaffolding to get mine off
Du grand savoir-faire dans l'optimisation et la rénovation des moteurs série A ! What a legend is Bill could hear him ramble on for hours... oh hang on. Very knowledgeable. I also estimate this video was made somewhere in 1999/2000.
You don't pound on the shaft in a bearing to seat it in a bore, the first motion/input shaft, you pound on the outer race that's an interference fit into the housing bore! Don't pound thru the shaft, then the inner race, then the bearings, then the surface of the outer race until finally getting to the houswing.
Brilliant, informative. I must get my act together & get my old Mini back on the road. I cringe how they just throw the bits into a plastic bucket, but then we can be sure that Bill knows every single part, on first name terms.
I have rebuilt 2 classic minis, an Austin Morris 1100 and 1300 and a 1500 MG Midget and I still found your video informative and very interesting. It just shows that you are never too old to learn from other people.I love this engine. Thank you.
Came across this AFTER rebuilding my 1275 MPI engine. Lost interest when you cut the most important part of the dismantling with the flywheel removal - How much pressure did you have to exert to actually get that stubborn flywheel off..? Why did you cut there - surely a stubborn one would show what you need to do to actually get it off, leaving all that in would have made a lot of difference to this video. Some engineering techniques left a bit to be desired. Why work on the floor.? Hope your backs could stand it.
Why did the starter motor hole appear to have the edge freshly broken close to the block when the flywheel was removed and what appeared to be the broken pieces lying in the bottom of the bell housing behind the flywheel? The pieces were removed almost but not quite out of camera shot. The things that make you go mmmmmm!! Still a good video. Thanks.
I have never seen this video, so glad to find it. I have stripped and rebuilt so many mini and metro A+ engines its untrue, virtually retired now. I am so glad you did not use power tools like everyone else does,is it the fashion now ? As you said you can't feel the threads ! I have seen air guns wipe out castings by not being set to undo.. expensive hobby.
I stripped out my first mini engine when i was 10 years old with my Dad watching loved every minute. When I put it back together Iactualy had no nuts or bolts left over Result.
For heaven's sake don't forget to put the engine at TDC no. 1 when pulling the flywheel off - if the primary gear C washer drops down whilst pulling the flywheel off because you haven't put it at TDC you are in deep doo doo!
Wow, that was fantastic. I sat through the full 4 hours and 10 sec. Great build and excellent explanations. I would have you build an engine for me, only I'm across the globe.
Somehow I can’t see how do you get the right torque if you oil the threads. Shurely different oil viscosity would alter the settings. I remember reading on an official manual that you should never oil the threads.
I’ve read this too, there is a lot of debate against greasing up. Kent Cams are quite a well established engineering firm so they must have highly qualified engineers who know what they are talking about so I would lead on their suggestions.
Zed Man I have a Fiat factory manual for a 1960 Fiat 600. The manual says that the thread should be clean but on no account to use any lubricant. But you are right. These people are very professional.
He uses copper grease. There are many thoughts for both sides to the argument of lubricating threads. The engineering science behind this grease confirms it is more likely to get accurate torque settings when used than not.
Donal Kavanagh I am not an engineer but the torque wrench measure the effort put into turning a bolt. If the thread is greased it offer les resistance. It would interesting to know how the manufacturers set the torque wrenches. Would they grease the thread or not. I only made the comment because I have a 1960 FIAT 600. The factory manual says that the tread should be clean but not to grease the threads.
1:00:13 Why would holding the clutch wear the thrust bearings of the crank, it would only wear the throw out bearing. If anything, it would be the opposite, due to the pressure plate pressing the clutch against the flywheel and therefor the crank.

1:19:27 wrong!!! use nothing here & your rings will bed in much faster!!! They will be lubricated as fark in just a few seconds anyway but the first couple of secs, with no lube, will really help the bedding in!!
@@Farlig69 Nothing to do with balance. It is to prevent blowby from the top ring from having an easy path past the next one. If you didn't know that basic, then I'll give the rest of your advice a very wide berth.

this is the most useful classic mini related video ever made!
What a treat! Thank you for keeping this on the Tubes for us Mini freaks
Absolutely awesome job. Best rebuild mini engine video I have ever watched. Great job.

This brings back so many memories from building and maintaining a 1330 mini for rallying - many many thanks to all involved, this is wonderful!
I have just brought a mini cooper spi 1992 and this video is the best one i have seen. Top man Bill

No, he mentions camera phones at 2:16:30 so at least 2002/3.

Wow what a great instructive video, can't believe i haven't seen this before...loved it 😊
Thanks SO much for this lads. I’m about to rebuild my 998 A+ and this is really helpful. :)

merci pour cette video...ca remotive pour refaire mon moulin..
It’s now 2020 and I just bought my mini,, thank you so much for this video, I appreciate appreciate the time and detailed work!
Have not seen this either however I believe that the expert is Mr Bill Sollis a mini racing driver & race car builder......he knows his stuff!
Bloody brilliant video nothing else like it on youtube
This video really sets the standard not only for Mini engine builds, but for all others..👏
¡Excelente vídeo, si señor!
I always thought Bill Sollis looks like Mr. Bean...
This is the most wicked video on re-building an A series perfomance engine, top banana
This is a brilliant video, thanks so much.
Great watching this. I notice that no water pump or fan were being driven, this surely must be distracted from the measured power.
Thank you so much for your time and knowledge!!!
Wow what a fantastic video! Definitely saving this for later!
Top restauration with expert , magnificent ! No ? Just a jewel this engine !
Great video, very informative
Very British two blokes in a Shed fiddling with a mini engine
For over 4 hours??? Who has that kind of time to watch YT videos?
Christopher Bedford Someone in lockdown
great video

Superb video!! Best I’ve seen on the subject! Be certainly using this for reference myself. Did I miss something? No gaskets on the diff cover ?
Brilliant...
This is still my GO TO video to remind me what torque settings and clearances... I have 6 x 1275s engine is parts at the moment.

Those are leaves .... and its a Metro ..lol
Is that a very youthful Nick Swift at the dyno controls? :-)
Brilliant!!! Whrere´s the hi res version :) :) :) Anyone know when this was filmed?
It's ripped from a dvd, I bought a copy years ago. Still for sale on Amazon.

Threads aren't the only thing on a fastener that have its friction changed by lube, there's the nut or bolt head's surface

1:20:16 same here -no oil needed Billy boy!!!
1:20:31 and whilst I´m on a rant, do all the rings have identical resonant frequencies? No, so 180deg spacing is a waste of time - old folklore...
I don't know of any professional engine builder or manufacturer who would agree with that.
