Malaria Cases in US Raises Alarm

  • Why have just five cases of malaria in the US prompted such an alert? The five cases have raised alert because this is the first time in 20 years that there has been local transmission of malaria in the United States.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning doctors and public health officials about a handful of locally acquired cases of malaria. There hasn’t been a case of malaria caught locally in the US in 20 years.
Typically, if Americans get sick with malaria they’ve caught it while traveling overseas in areas where malaria is more common. Malaria is a disease spread when the female anopheline mosquito feeds on a person with malaria and then feeds on another.
The mosquito can be found in certain regions in the US, but malaria is still rare in the US. Worldwide there are 240 million cases each year, 95% in Africa.
That could change with the climate crisis. Scientists have been warning people that malaria could become more common in the US as temperatures warm.

Hey Dr. Hanson, I, along with a lot of other people in the military had been given mefloquine back in '93. This was before they were mandated to put the "black box" warning label. It is well documented that many people (that I knew and was with) had suffered psychotic episodes. Do you know if they have made changes to that medication? Also, can you recommend an alternative for he prevention of malaria? Many thanks!

There is at least one species of mosquito that is active in the daytime. We live very close to International Airport. Three years ago, we were warned that a new species of mosquito had arrived at the airport. That species of mosquito was a daytime active mosquito. Two years ago, we had a few of them around, and this year, we had lots of them around. A twenty four hour mosquito watch is now necessary..

people are just willfully ignorant when it comes to all the damage and horrible things that come as a result of climate change -- the bad insects have been moving northward from the southern places where they were usually found, as they find habitable territory in warming northern areas. With warmer weather in the north, and no length of really cold weather to kill their larvae or prevent them from developing, we continue to see unusual bugs and insects here.

I've been bitten from mosquitos so many times for two weeks straight in africa and i do not live there.
I was there for holiday during july. My blood cells.has done a great job dealing with the parasite and of course medication to back up my immune system. Ive also got sickle cell trait (which makes it hard for parasites from mosquitos to develop in my body). Also go my up to date vaccines before travelling to africa returning back home.
