This is an extremely helpful comparison and review of the two pianos I am considering. You've answered all of my questions and more. Very well produced.
The NU1 sounds much more like a real piano. The CLP585, though more versatile, sounds like an electric piano. Between the two, I would go with the NU1 but, as good as these are, I still prefer the sound of the real thing.
i listened to the NU1 today in a store and was really impressed by the sound even compared to some Roland LX 705-6-8 . the display and lack of voices suck though. and yeah , thx for the review
It seems the NU is more indicate who needs a real acoustic piano sound with a identic keyboard touch, but because the noise when played and the neighborhood its impossible with a normal acoustic piano. The NU provides the possibility to cut the external sound when you plug in a headphones, like a Yamaha Silient Piano but without the strings, which makes the NU1 a piano much more compact, therefore more appropriate to have in your house or apartment.
The NU1 sounds just like the overstrung upright piano I learnt on, as a child at my parents (It wasnt a Yamaha, and I can't remember the manufacturer of hand), the 585, sounds too "full", too synthetic in this video for my tastes, however, maybe that was the instrument that was being used within the software. I'd like to have heard the two instruments being played on the same instrument should they be available, be it the Bösenforfer, or Yamaha CFX. To me that would have been a more valid test of the speakers.
It's been upgraded, the CLP685 has some enhancements over the CLP585. The CLP585, but you may want to compare the two before deciding to go with the old model.
I have played both instruments several times and none of them has finally convinced me. However, the samples are very good over headphones. In the end, I decided to buy a Kawai cs11. with its soundboard backboard it sounds active in the room perfectly. The samples are wonderful.
No, NU1 is not newer technology. NU1 was introduced in 2012 and the CLP585 in 2013 and the CLP685 is the newest model introduced in 2017. It's best to try them in the store, youtube compression can be misleading.
@@benjaminsmith2287 I own the 685 and it sounds way different that what it sounds on RUclips, I'd definitely recommend everyone to actually try it in store because it sounds gorgeous in person.
I was looking for a digital piano just for a few months before I can move my piano. Because the current flat's corridor is far to small. But end up watching all of your videos, and really love these larger ones. Hope these can be moved by parts. 😂😂😂😂 thank you so much. Wonderful explanation.
Could anyone enlighten me with a quick overview of the differences between a digital piano like this and an acoustic piano in the same price range? For someone who's only interested in playing with the piano sound.
+Frode 5 Ok, a quick overview; Digital pianos; never go out of tune, don't weight very much, feel same as traditional piano, piano sound produced indistinguishable to 8/10 people, you can control volume including wearing headphones, you can used different sounds e.g. strings/choir, you can record what you're playing and transfer onto computer/cd etc.
+ePianos.co.uk continued... Acoustic pianos; Sound wonderful because they have real hammer hitting real strings, infinite amount of tonal variation, are extremely heavy, virtually no volume control for quiet practice, some people argue that they look nicer as pieces of furniture.
+ePianos.co.uk So there are pros and cons of both acoustic and digital pianos. Digital pianos are more practical without doubt and are growing more and more popular as the sound they produce becomes more accurate to the 'real' thing. Traditional pianos are not very practical things for modern living, however they do sound beautiful and in a funny way you can actually fall in love with a traditional piano in a way that you just can't with a digital one, or maybe that's just me. Hope that helps you Frode 5.
Hi Ya, Love your video, even showed it to my piano teacher. But still could not decide which one to buy. Can NU1 and CLP 585 take me up to grade 8 and beyond? I'm on grade 5 at the moment and needs to buy a new piano soon. Can you please give advice the comparison between Roland X17 and Yamaha NU1? Many thanks.
Also, I would be interested to know, if Yamaha have a "true hybrid" upright piano in the range, with their "Silent System" installed, so it can be used as a true acoustic upright piano
Hi could you do a review/comparison of Yamaha's P-255 and YDP-S52 please. I am thinking of using at home only, but want the best feel/sound, which of these 2 would you recommend, or is there something more appropriate? thanks
Great demo! I also played both of them and I would have bought the NU1 if it would have had the 585 speakersystem. But the action on the NU1 is soooo nice.....oh well, I'm very happy with my 585.
The newest model is actually the 685 and yes it does have fully wooden keys with a Synthetic Ivory and ebony finish on the top - simulating the touch of a real grand piano.
NU1 has upright piano key action, N1 has grand piano key action. I played all Yamaha hybrid models in a store (Nu1, N1, N2 and N3x) and my favourite is definatley the N2. Wonderful touch, great sound. Will save my money for it! :)
It was surprised that N2 was chosen rather than N3X which looks more grand pianos. I would like to watch a video to compare between N2 and N3X and hope you can explain the reason in the video.
Yes. Here it is on our website: www.epianos.co.uk/yamaha-clavinova-clp585pe-in-polished-ebony-with-free-uk-delivery-540-p.asp?uid=0a0f85b2-4825-400c-bb26-d33cf8a4e7c1
Hello! Thanks a lot for the amazing review. A have a question, witch one of these two has the heaviest keys? I need the heaviest keys as possible for practice, like a real acoustic piano.
Same question. The 545 is on my mind because it also has NWX keys and 256 polyphony. Is there a massive difference between the 545 than either of these two? I want them. Invest in a piano that will progress with me. Do these pianos just have extra bells and whistles or are they quite important?
The difference between the 545 and 585 is like night and day. In my opinion, the 535, 545, and 565 are muddy and missing clarity in the mid to high tones. Also, the action on the these models are not in the same league (but to defend Yamaha, they are cheaper models). I purchased a CLP 585 a few months back, and it is an absolutely amazing instrument. I love it! I have to say that I also looked at the NU1 which I also liked very much, but the tone of the 585 was much richer and more vibrant. The 575 is not bad, but for just a little more money you will be much happier with the 585. After spending 3 hours in the store I ended up with a CLP585 after playing every digital piano in this price range.
+Doug M interesting and very helpful. My budget is currently 4500 US. But i wanted to know what i get for passing almost double for a 585 compared to a 545. Thank you very much ill visit a Yamaha retailer soon and try these out as well. Thanks again.
David, as far as grading the two pianos (and this is just my opinion), if the 585 is rated as A+, the 545 would be rated a C+. The key-bed and speaker system in the 585 is so far superior to the 545 that they are not in the same league.
not really, these are high-end products. An Arius YDP143 or maybe 163 is much less money and suitable for beginners and kids (or intermediate players). And these pianos have a good, Yamaha sound.
Very nice comparison!! Can I ask how many centimetres above the floor are positioned the pedals in the NU1 and in the CLP585? It seems to me that in the NU1 they are higher. Thank you!
Thank you for recording that with microphones rather than a direct line out.
Best review of these two models I've seen.
Thanks Christopher, hope it helped.
Very much, thank you. My old CLP-390 has snuffed it and I shall be saving for a 585.
This is an AWESOME comparison video. Thank you very much for taking the time for it!
This review and comparison is excellent - intelligent, best of British style. Thank you.

@@ePianoscouk can you pls. Help me .
1) Is roland lx series key action better than yamaha clp??
2) is sound quality in roland is worser than yamaha?

Same! I looked down at my phone expecting it to ring.
Great help. Gonna have to play them to decide! Thanks
Starts playing at: 10:20
Thanks for the nice demo. I've actually been waiting for your one on the new Yamaha csp 150 and 170. It will be much help. Thanks!

not to mention much cheaper

ESCAPEMENT!! That's what that is I've been wondering about that for years
Thanks great review. Nu1 is newer technology ? The sound is more realistic than the richer but more synthetic sound of the 585.
I agree with you, but you need to be lucky, as different NU1 units come with an annoying dynamics issue.

You're welcome thank you.
I doesn't simulate the feel of an upright piano, it is exactly the same mechanism
Thanks!
Is there any repetition mechanism in the CLP-585?

What about Yamaha CLP575 / CLP585 vs Casio GP300 / GP500? Looking at these pianos at the moment. Thanks.
FERNANDO Thanks for the suggestion but I ended up buying a Kawai CS8 in the end. Awesome piano and happy with it! Check it out on my channel :)

Trans-acoustic, it's expensive. usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/pianos/transacoustic/index.html
CLP sounded wierdly artificial, something about he articulation of the sampling probably.
look at the Phoenix Piano by Adele H, seems to crush everything else in terms of sound and touch.
Please do a review of the recent Korg pianos! Why just Yamahas? Don't you sell other brands?
You should compare grand to grand action using the N2.
Which country are these two models made in?
CLP 585 is good or CLP575?
Hi could you do a review/comparison of Yamaha's P-255 and YDP-S52 please. I am thinking of using at home only, but want the best feel/sound, which of these 2 would you recommend, or is there something more appropriate? thanks
Great comparison! What song are you playing at 10:43?
Just a little improvisation. ;-)
Bruce Hornsby vibes! 🎶
Can i ask which one you preferred if you had a choice?
would have liked to have heard the CLP585 simulate a Bosendorfer...
To me, the CLP 585 sounds more muted. I am assuming that the same mikes were used.
Great demo! I also played both of them and I would have bought the NU1 if it would have had the 585 speakersystem. But the action on the NU1 is soooo nice.....oh well, I'm very happy with my 585.
+kees ketsers Yeah it's a tough choice isn't it? - Both great pianos though.
I'm in the uk, I was wondering if you are based in London or somewhere else?
We are in Banbury, just north of Oxford. Just off junction 11 of the M40 motorway.
How do you take the front panel off of the NU1?
Strictly for piano playing, Yamaha's Avant Grand hybrid pianos trounce the Clavinovas in sound and feel. It's not even close.
So, would be better with a CLP585 if I were to want to play a grand piano?
Yes
Thankyou!
Digital = Muffeled, fake, toyish. Sounds like under a blanket. NU1 = AWESOME!
Are the keys on the 585 fully wooden or just the sides of the plastic keys are masked with wood?
The newest model is actually the 685 and yes it does have fully wooden keys with a Synthetic Ivory and ebony finish on the top - simulating the touch of a real grand piano.
Oi Pedro , O que vc achou?
Hi, I hesitate between both. I had a opportuniti to buy one a 3000euros, is it worth ?
Thank you, and sorry for my bad english ! :)
Hello! If you search for the video "Hybrid Piano Yamaha NU1 issue" you may have another point of view. Good luck!

Benjamin Smith They are suitable for beginners. But not mandatory for beginners.
88 keys the same as a real piano you say! so are they not real pianos?
Lol, saying "real" is a very bad habit our ours. A more accurate word would be "Traditional".
thank you . its very helpful .and NU1 Hybrid is like a more pure or close. i am right. i am going to buy.
Please upload a comparison between clp 575 and 585. Trying to decide which to buy. Thanks
British accent is so funny :D
Yes but that's also the original accent
Very nice comparison!!

It seems to me that in the NU1 they are higher.

I waited for 10:19 minutes of video to hear the sound taken from the camera's microphone!
The key difference is the keys difference.
So, basically - Yamaha are trying to build pianos that .. er, simulate other pianos ?? Duh!
