I hope Sony will improve the availability of their product. I really like Xperia phones
This has to be the best compact flagship ever made! That excellent battery life and stellar camera quality are enough to justify what I have just said!
That's true
@@StarDust_1988 The s23 is wider, while 5v is taller. So they are both as compact
@@StarDust_1988dude we hold our phone in vertical most of the time, not horizontal. 😂
@@StarDust_1988and you mean 3mm narrower which is alot
Too bad the price is also stellar. I mean for 1000$ it's not competitive at all.
The night time photos are superb - really clean and detailed that looks natural. One of the best I have seen for a phone.
This is my next phone. I am glad Sony is taking steps in the right direction. I have been going forth between Samsung, Pixel and other android phones but this one seems like a keeper. Better start saving up now! 😄
I switched to pixal 6a from Xperia Xz2, believe me I couldn't tolerate the pixal and even being the stock Android, the pixal keeps lagging occasionally.
Xperia xz2 being 5 years old still does not lag.
I am going for Xperia 5v again.
Fyi currently using Xperia 1 ii and sold the pixal 6a within 2 months.
Moral of the story is that if your hardware is bad then no matter how much software support and updates you provide. It kills the overall experience.
Interesting. I switched to a 1 series Xperia from a HTC U12 Plus. I love the Xperia phones. I'll be getting a new 1 series phone next year. This 5 series phone is a good budget friendly alternative though.
Do RUclips have tha money?
why not PIxel 8?
I'm definitely buying this phone, I've started saving money and hope to get it by the New Year, and maybe there'll be some discount then ;)
The cameras look like pro cameras, so natural with wide colour coverage and realistic contrast levels💯
Just looking at this phone gives me satisfaction! Let alone using, it will be a heavenly experience. I used few sony phones earlier, the experiences were so good I can't explain!
Sony is a piece of art, and art is expensive!
Sony is cooking something under the hood. Improvements in every aspect of their phones.
Agree 100%
CPU mostly...
Just kidding XD
Until they have long term software support, I think they'll always be not worth it for people who like to hold their phones for 5 years.
Phones are so powerful now that you don't need to keep swapping them around.
I have an xperia 5ii and I would've been perfectly happy with it had it had the support for Android 14 is it now? Tried a custom ROM to bring it up to date but there's still bugs that kinda suck.
I agree with you on the support part of Sony. They're terrible when it comes to smartphone support
Except for the gigantic side bezels.
I've a xperia 5ii and I absolutely love it's 70mm telephoto. Removing the telephoto was a bad idea . I would choose 5iv over this one
I would suggest poeple stay away from the 5 series until they have an answer for the light lines across the screens. It's one thing to have bad quality screens supplied by their vendor, it's another matter not to take responsibility for it.
You still have a 48mm zoom that apparently is quite good. I wonder if at the same crop, pics are now actually sharper.
@@user-jt5vm3mi1w They write about it in detail in the written review and also mentions the good quality in the video.
@@fretboardrunnerit is. People did compared 1.9x versus 2x.. it is different. But it appeared in Taiwan video explanation.
@@s.w4325You hav nt hold this phone inyour hand neither you have it and start already generalize . May some units of the 5 series have hade this isues but telling people not to buy the 5 series is abit to much .
Quite pleased by what Sony has done. It really starts to differenciate the 1 and 5.
The 1 is the big and most feature rich of the pack while the 5 is more fun.
agree. as a targeted 5 and 10 series user, i always felt that 10 was abit not enough but 5 was too much, thinking it would be better if the 5 would be abit lower.
Now it happens and im quite happy with it.
Snoycucks are the worst. This phone is overpriced junk.
@@fantasytky28 Why are you happy with them taking away features tho. I for one loved how picking between Xperia 5 and 1 was more about the size preference rather than features. As a fan of feature complete compact phones, Sony was basically the only option.
What is fun about being worse ?
@@MrMozkoZroutexactly. I 100% agree
For sure will be my next phone after S22 plus I'm using now. Battery life, processor, cameras, audio jack, microsd card and the form factor are the things who make me want it.
It'll definitely be amazing!
what about the 4 years of updates fo the Samsung compared to the 2 years for Sony . I thing the Samsung UI is better and the software support also
Why not wait for S24
Big respect to Sony for keeping 3.5mm jack 👍
I have the Xperia 5 III. I use the cameras a lot. The telephoto 70mm and 105mm are excellent for photos and fine for video. Shutter button is great. The best lens is the 24mm prime. Little hazing and good contrast. The size, buttons, dual sim, headphone jack, and cameras is why I purchased the phone.
Sold, been waiting for this phone since the 1 was released, The camera lenses will be more than good enough as I get my full frame camera out to do serious photography, been a Sony user for some 9 years now, but I like the idea of a slightly more compact phone this time. The only thing I wish Sony had done is the ribbed sides you find on the 1.
6:25 Endurance rating 130h is *_*A_* *_BEAST"_*
Super BEAST💪
being someone who has used LG V series phones since the V20, and being currently stuck on the V50 due to LG pulling out of the smartphone game, I was eyeballing Sony phones as a potential viable upgrade and with this generation I finally feel like it's a viable option to move into coming from an LG flagship.
It has the camera options with manual controls, it has quality enough components all around, and it has that little side menu popout that gives you access to some QoL quick access stuff similarly to how LG had their little popout menu.
Coupled with a high enough quality headphone jack and expandable storage it seems to be the only real replacement for an LG user like me.
Totally agree with you sir. As a former LG G2 owner and currently a LG V50 Thinq owner (Verizon Version, but living in Greece) i also think that the best alternative to a LG phone is something from Sony's line up of models (10V, 5V, 1V). It seems that 5V is overall the best balanced one of all. Definately should try it.
I’m coming from a G8 and I’m not sure if I should switch. I’d love to keep my g8 forever cause 95 percent of phones in the USA are boring and don’t offer what I care about most. But I’ll have to switch at some point 🫤
I'm in the same situation, but the Xperia 5V screen is just too narrow (comparing with the LG V20). If it was wider, I would probably get one. My LG v20 phone still works great. It just getting a bit slow when when using apps such as Google maps
One of the best smartphone for me xperia ❤
Thanks! GSMArena has been my goto trusted source for 10+ years now.
Sony could really disrupt the market if they made their phones more accessible tbh.
And fixed their SW issues.
5 III user here, The 105mm telephoto is very useful (although its sensor isn't great, it's way better then not having one). I understand that the 5 V's digital zoom is probably almost as good as the 5 IV's more anemic reach, it's a shame they nerfed the telephoto in the 5 line. Between this and build quality issues in experienced with my 5 III that were fortunately covered under warranty, may be looking elsewhere for my next phone. If only there were a reasonably sized flagship device with a telephoto and a headphone jack!😢
Yeah i am in the same boat as you. I also have an Xperia 5 III but i am actually super happy with it. And i am a bit affraid that when the time to upgrade will come, the 5 lineup won't be as feature complete as it always been. I loved that Sony didn't cut too many corners with their lower tier flagship and basically just made it more compact version only. I use to Z1 compact back in the day as well and i loved it. Now it seems that they are walking in the footsteps of Samsung and similar phone makers who have one Ultra grade flagship and then cheaper grade flagship with many compromises and cut corners. If only smaller and more reasonable didn't always mean worse.
You may consider the Asus Zenfone 10.
Sorry to say but the tele quality on your 5iii is crap.
The zoom on v with the new Algo beat the bad native tele that sony had
Well, to my mind not including something was obviously needed (It's cheaper), and I personally prefer a phone without telephoto to a phone without 5000 battery.
@@fantasytky28it doesnt beat that cause it doesnt zoom that far
Few upgrades like the lack of telephoto, half the storage and no LTPO which actually something I'm hoping for seeing it isn't a variable resolution display like the 1V. Otherwise solid but not groundbreaking. At least the main camera is improved and the zoom is usable for a crop. Plus lower priced. It should be a good buy if you don't mind a few sacrifices.
Yeah... Should have provided a 3x zoom camera to improve zooming capabilities, since it's a flagship.
Yeah except it always used to have a zoom camera before and now it doesn't. Xperia 5 used to be the smaller phone with almost no compromises, now it isn't anymore.
@@MrMozkoZrout The 5 phones always has a “worse” camera than the 1 though, the 5 IV had no optical zoom, no variable focal length (which, ironically enough, was present on the 1 IV, 1 III and even the 5 III) and a smaller camera in terms or resolution (13 megapixels instead of 51 megapixels on the 1 IV), so nothing really new here.
LTPO is advertise as a good feature for saving battery but it's actually the worse feature.. it gets you eye strain without noticing.
@@netako there's no 51MP camera on the 1 IV.
This was almost my dream phone
1) 6.1 size
2) Android
3) 5000 mAh
The only deal breaker is it doesn't have internal memory storage of 256 GB by default.
Memory: 128GB 8GB RAM; UFS 3.1; microSDXC (uses shared SIM slot).
The side bezel looks so thick! Xperia 5 IV still the best for me.
I was looking for them yesterday in Dubai, they are nowhere to be found.
Great review as always. Also loving the shorter hair. :) im so bummed Sony exited the Australian market, this is the phone id buy for sure. Ticks all my boxes, no other phone does
Battery life is one of the killer stuffs
I love Sony, it launches great phones with innovation❤🎉
Xperia 5 II is my main driver. If I have to choose my next phone, 5 V is probably the strongest competition. I'll just wait a little for a price drop after the release date.
Not a good idea i think u should go to the zenphone 10.... Would give u an excellent performance
@@starkabdelghani168 I agree, Zenfone 10 is a strong competition. Expandable storage is a nice perk for me, so it's hard to give up on that. I'll wait and see if thermals are better than in the previous generation of Xperia 5. Benchmark comparison between Zen and Xperia should tell a lot, too. For now, I bet on Xperia 5 V, tho.
@@starkabdelghani168ASUS has pulled the ability to unlock Zenfones until further notice (starting in May). Considering the servers still aren’t up, I wouldn’t look at buy a Zenfone til I knew I would have the ability to unlock it.
@@starkabdelghani168I've got a zenfone 8 presently sent away for service as its totally dead, no charging, nothing. I'm hoping that everything is retreavable and then I'll get this sony one. I can't trust it any longer.
5ii user here too . now with 4 green stripes in the screen :(. now still looking around what is available but this 5v just seems to have miss the spot with leaving a good telelens out :S weird choice of sony. lets hope for e 5vi with telelens
Can t wait to get this. I have a S21 5G now, I was thinking between this and the xperia 1IV, but this one has better battery life and a newer procesor. The 1 IV has a better screen and maybe cameras, but for me the battery life is pretty important. Thinking about getting a sony phone from a long time ago, now i think it s the time :)
great choice
SONY ❤️ 🇯🇵 👑
as someone who is not willing to touch a samsung phone and much rather get a chinese phone for extra cheaper... this will be my return to both sony and having an upper range phone in what i think has been 7 years... my last upper range phone was a sony ericsson... its just been absolutely downhill after that...
Posted this with the quickness! Great work
I can see Sony improve a lot on camera and video quality.. But why I see this 5V it seems to be smaller than the last year? Dang I love compact phone I still have my XZ2 Compact
Finally! In the right direction. This is way way way better than the weird elongated ones! This will be my next phone.
the best smartphone in the world in terms of professionalism and functionality. although the camera's postprocessing needs to be improved further. However, this can still be covered by using an editor such as LR.
I'm still satisfied with my X5IV.
Well, seems Sony is the only vendor who made phones with rectangular display without any notches etc, and do not sacrifice SD card and 3.5 jack. I'm buying it.
I'm glad Sony are doing more to differentiate the 1 and 5. The 5 should be markedly cheaper than the 1 to make it appealing to a wider audience. The removal of the telephoto is brave, but a Main+UW is the same setup as the non-Pro iPhones, which doesn't seem to inhibit them. My one gripe with it is the width. The bezels on the side are awkwardly wide, but if that extra width is required to fit the large battery, then that's not too bad. With good marketing from Sony and promotion by carriers, I think it could do quite well.
I noticed the bezels get thicker too. That's unacceptable at the price range $999.
@@ryannguyen0206 It's more complicated than bezels/price at this sort of size. It would be unreasonable to develop a new display to fit in a chassis that's actually only 1mm wider than last year's, and if that extra mm has enabled them to fit a larger battery, then it's really no biggie. That battery will last longer per charge, and give a reliable full day of use for longer as it degrades from it's higher starting point. The real controversial thing with the 5V is the lack of telephoto.
I exclusively buy Sony phones since before they even merged with Ericsson. My first and still fav model is CMD-J5 which I still have till this day :)
I have 5 v few days now and something is wrong with the audio and speakers. There is distortion and weird treble on high volume.
Sony care bout music lovers didn't removed 3.5
2 years OS update is a dealbreaker for this amazing phone. A lot of people will not buy xperia phones for 2 years os updates. Sadly, Sony will soon die in the phone industry
Looked Compact Phone for
- Pixel 8 (Eynyos releated modem and battery issue)
- ZenFone 9 & 10 (camera and SDCard issue)
- S23 (ui, battery , ufs 3.1 on 128gb, 3.5jack, sdcard, camera instability issues)
But seems like Xperia 5 V beats all of them on every aspect excluding taller size and thermal throttling, Just price is force us to start dietary ))
I'm looking for a new phone, because my pixel4a is no longer recieve updates. This phone is perfect except... 3 years of security updates. Just why?
Ive been a dedicated sony phone fan for maybe 10-15 years. The only thing that really bothers me about sony phones and its cameras are the insanely slow shutter speeds that are chosen in automatic / regular photo mode, especially in darker scenes where you dont want it to force night mode.
I cant begin to tell you how many times ive needed a quick photo and the shutter speed was so off (even the automatic ISO) that the photo was basically useless. =/ i sense that happening here with this phone. Idk, but i feel like whoever is making the backend stuff needs to figure out how to make these light sensors read better.
everything else with the phones are perfect, and i really hope they bring back the actual compacts like the xz2 compact
They really killed the 5! The 5 was supposed to be a smaller 1, but they even removed one of the cameras.
There are not good phones anymore.
Yeah i loved how they continued in the spirit of the old Compact lineup. Just a smaller version ofthe flagship with as little compromises as possible. Missing one camera is sadly not it anymore especially if the price stayed the same and the memore and ram didn't increase in the last two years.
I agree that is a big mistake. The zenfone 10 is not big of a difference anymore now but almost 300 euro cheaper
I love Sony camera never disappoint
This phone has everything I need. Speed and battery in a small form factor. Unfortunately the price is just too much.
My opinion not popular probably nowdays, nut I really miss under 5 inches display. A 4.7 display was perfect fit for normal everyday phone usage and ine handed operation. Nowadays people call 6.2 display as small!
We call it compact because it shorter than its brothers, yet still quite tall for me.
For me its fine.. For the sake of 21:9 ratio it's fine..
6.1" isn't that tall
Hi, cal you help me plz ?
I can't find the shortcut icon for disabling/enabling mobile data... You know, the buttons when you swipe down. I've never had a Sony smartphone. Don't they exist on Sony phones ?
Love the phone overall but at about 1000 Euros, man that is off puting. I was lucky enough to snatch a S23 Ultra(512 storage) for about 950 Euros. Right now its 1150.
I've seen the Xperia 1 V go for 1099€ which is very close to 5 V. I think the price should've been 900€ for the 5 V.
Price is worth it. This phone rules. Plan on buying as my next.
The xperia 5 should be key to reach more customers but Sony just killed with several downgrade. This should be not mark V, but III.5
Whyyyyy sony!
the telephoto cam missing is a mistake... its not about how much i can digi zoom, but how faces in portraits look. How natural and such. There should be telephoto and main... they should drop wide.
Exactly! I have never ever used ultrawide so far... That is totally useless.
Oooor hear me out, for this price they shouldn't drop any of the cameras lol. Like it always been before. And they could already upgrade that ram and memory. 8GB/128Gb for how many years in the row now ?
@@MrMozkoZrout true, the price is not spectacular either for one less lens and just 128Gb storage. I thought they did it to sell it really cheaper and sell more.
@@vladimirkraus1438100% agreed. And i am a 5ii user. Will still keep this one for a while. Maybe it sony continues this 2 lens trend on the 5 i might choose Asus zenfone 10 instead. It even had a resolution 50mp photocapture..seems very useful if you want to print your photos out. Sony why.
@@namelesssnitchy I very much like Sony because of the natural look of the photos. It is the only brand that really captures the scene as it is (mostly). All other brands oversaturate, oversharpen, artificially flatten the photo using too much HDR (calling it a good dynamic range, but the photo looks ugly)... So I am now choosing between 5 V and 1 V. I prefer the compactness of 5 V but I lack the medium telephoto... Well, well, well... It is hard to decide. If they put 3x zoom instead of ultra wide lens to 5 V, it would be the obvious choice for me.
Does Sony still make the compact phones, similar to the Sony Experia Z3 Compact?
Wow a review already? That's quick!
I have a 5ii . They stopped updating . Stuck on android 12 and security updates from October 22. Sony is great but the phone never gets updates . None of my touch to pay apps or biometric work due to lack of updates

The side bezels though
I just bought this phone in Australia but didn't realise sony didn't include a charger - I can't find official wall charger/ cable online. Do you know where I can buy a compatible charger for this phone?
is it just me or this amount of bezel on a smartphone is just perfect?
Samsung S22 has the perfect size of bezel, this is a setback to 2017
@@MikaelPorttila look man, it's just my opinion. I don't like too thin bezels on a smartphone, you might think otherwise.

I still have the 5. So for me this would be a big upgrade in any way I look at it (; so i dont have to think or worry if the price is worth it or not for small upgrades haha (;
Well, that's a goodbye to Xperia 5 for me. :\ Why did they decide to remove telephoto lens from the compact phone? No fun.
Ihave always loved Sony mobile phone, the specs are great..if only they have O.S support like that of Samsung..
Guys, what does Sony say about updates of the software? Again 2 years?
I just dont understand why cripple Xperia series 5 to make Xperia 1 look better, Sony has a tiny market share and still tries to position their own products against each other. Please make a proper compact flagship at a higher price if you have to and introduce Xperia 7 if you want a lower spec Xperia 5. Having no storage options, except for sd cards that makes the android phones laggy beond usability, is a no go.
How many software upgrades are we getting with this?
Waiting for side by side Comparison with S23 compact flagship of Samsung.
I love that Sony still doesn't do screen cutouts and very roubded corners + extra things like sd card and headphone jack but they're too expensive and a bit behind with some the technologies like LTPO screen. I would still probably get a Sony though if ever I'm in the market to get one but sadly I only look for Ubuntu Touch compatible devices 😄
Is still overheating? How many years of software support will get? Thanks
They should lower it to about 800 if they want to mass sell it. You could probably get the new Iphone 15 for 800. At 1000$ mark I might consider the S23 Ultra right now or even the 14 Pro
Xperia phone looks different
Wow ....not like other phone i like their design
This one really looks good. Hope Song Xperia will come back to the PH market.
how about the temperature? as we know sony have a problem with heat temperature (btw i use xperia 5 i)
Showing more phones that are going live on the market or markets make you more important than any other big Channel like mkbhd or unbox therapy 😮🎉
Thank you for your work 🙏
Nice phone but the screen is too small for me and it is too expensive for a phone.
Is there led notification
Im German but Love your Reviews
No LTPO display means it will remain at 120 hz even at ideal. That will consume more battery.
I used a Sony phone during my college days and it was one of the best phones I've ever had but the only thing holding me back from repurchasing are the software updates... don't they provide only 2 years of software updates...
Yes I am also thinking about that, does anyone know if Sony really stop their updates after 2 Years for the flagship models?
Yes I currently use an original Xperia 5 and it is still running android 11 and doesn't get any updates at all. I for the price the new 5 feels like a step back given that google are supporting the pixel 8 for 7 years. Sony do make some good phones but they come with some really dumb design choices compared with competitiors@@Thomas-wx7uf
Sony do it right. 7.20 just look at dynamic range, colour accuracy, I'm amazed. And that's all in normal size, not like other large, heavy breaks over 200g
usually I'm the last one to complain about bezels, especially top and bottom - but WHAT is going on with those side behemoth bezels???
Punch hole is better???
At least it's better than a hole in the screen as if a fly landed on your phone screen while you were watching a movie 😂
Sony Xperia designs are classic and very beautiful
as you hold it you will feel it
Xperia 5 iV, iii, ii have thinner bezel than this phone. This too thick.. 😢😢😢
Only mark against this phone is no LTPO display, I imagine the battery life would be a lot less with the high refresh rate on all the time. It has expandable storage unlike the Zenfone 10. I prefer the plastic back on the Zenfone. If Asus goes ahead and allows the bootloader to be unlocked then I think the Zenfone 10 is a better all around phone.
Sony have a market leader camera sensor, have a market leader gaming console, and also have a good their own Oled display.
I think they will conquered this smartphone market easily, but why they didn't..??? a big WHY ..??
Looks okay, but a bit sad about a true Telephoto lens going away. It is a bit odd how undecisive Sony seemed regards 5 series Telephoto. It is *wild* that they went 60mm equiv. on the 5-IV, less than the 5-III or 5-II !
24mm is still too wide for a main camera as well, especially with a missing telephoto.
price?
Smartphone makers in general should've removed the ultra wide lens instead of telephoto. Ultra wide lens with lower resolution and smaller sensor is kinda useless. You can't squeeze enough viewablw details with such tiny lens and tiny sensors simply because of physics. It works well with bigger sensors with larger resolution but not on smartphone cameras.
nailed it Sony!!
What is the price?
Sony make some best Sony phones 📱 I ever seen dam
Great analysis! Congrats to SONY!
Sony needs to do something with their design.
Where is the photo gallery on this device , I don't mean Google photos I mean the actual phone gallery .. ridiculous that I'm even having to ask
Lovin the new hair do 💗
So it might have enough power and battery life to be usable for a long time. And they still do not provide security patches for more than 3 years. Fantastic job Sony, great analysis of the market. Very pro-consumer and environmental thinking. Not like we're living in the world, where something somewhere gets hacked like every second. It looked promissing, but that's a no-go for me. Phones should not be e-waste after just 3 years.
You can keep phones longer. My lg g8 is on 4 years and it does just fine in most aspects
How long was the android support on this?
2 years os i think
It's so frustrating not having gallery and a simple camera app. Best hardware in poor os. No face recognition and no adaptation refresh rate
