A "bad" album from Green Day is still miles better than most albums from other bands these days. I had a lot of fun listening to FOAMF. Far from my fav Green Day album but its got good stuff on it. BJ and Green Day are just great song writers so even when they stray from their tried and true formula its still going to be decent.
I will say this album came out in my senior year of high school and I had just gotten into Green Day the year before, so I still kind of hold a special place in my heart for this album. But compared to their other work it's "Enjoyable" at best.
This album is…………fine. I get it’s love gets, and I get (most) of the hate it gets. I think the album’s promotion was awful, but the music itself is decent. It’s just feels like an album the band only barely cares about and in the future, I think the only thing we’ll remember about this record is it’s crappy cover. Also your original review was totally fine. I was blown away by some of the hate you were getting lol.
This album is not at all my favorite by them, but I genuinely enjoy listening to it. It’s super fun, and light hearted, and it honestly just makes me want to dance.
i so hope they bounce back hard after Father of All. i'm a massive defender of the trilogy but even i have to say Revolution Radio was a step in the right direction for Green Day
6:58 They finally played it again at their Vegas show the other night. Agreed on it being one of the best songs on the album, and that it’s one of those songs that sounds better live.
Father of All IMO, is a fun album to vibe with! Its just for a good listen when u wanna hear a couple bangers and lay back and feel the beat. Sorta takes you through the motions a little bit and it's a little fin to get lost in.
I’ve always really liked this album. Sugar Youth and Take the Money and Crawl are my favorites. It’s really upbeat and fun, even though it’s different.
The funniest part about this album’s rollout is that everyone thought it was so bad that it had to be a joke until a surprise album, an actual good one, would come out later We were really living in glass houses in 2020
I respect the honesty and willingness to admit you were wrong. That’s what I enjoy about your videos, your honesty and willingness to share with us when you change your mind on something. I enjoy these reviews. I hope you’ll do one for Hozier’s upcoming album unreal unearth once it releases.
I’ve been a huge Green Day fan since 1995. I love this album. I much prefer it over Revolution Radio. The band sounded invigorated and inspired, like they were having fun and making the album that they wanted to make at the time.
Your experience was very similar to mine! I really enjoyed it on my first listen, but I got over it extremely quickly (something that never happens with Green Day) , I didn’t hate it but nothing made me want to come back. I will defend Father of all… tho, that song was good back then and it’s still good now
Strong agree, I remember listening to it and not really thinking of it about a week later. I also remember that first single really souring how I felt compared to the other two, knowing I was going to hear it live on the tour (though that concert never happened because it was the one Canadian gig)
I agree with this a lot. I was pleasantly surprised on FOAs release date. And then just forgot the album existed not much later. Every once in a while I’ll turn it on, but it doesn’t take long before I just put on a better Green Day album lol
Entirely fair to you for coming back and pointing out your change of heart on this album. Especially as it's an album from your fave band. Ngl, my opinion hadn't changed: I still really kinda like it but I may not be so gracious towards it if it wasn't short. Least fave GD album is still iUno!
I like Father Of All... My Ranking is: 1. Father Of All... 2. Meet Me On The Roof 3. Take The Money And Crawl 4. Graffitia 5. Fire, Ready, Aim 6. Sugar Youth 7. Junkies On A High 8. Stab You In The Heart 9. Oh Yeah! 10. I Was A Teenage Teenager I listen music for fun and to make me happy. And this Album definitly does it for me. That's why it's one of my fav Albums of all time. I Also, love it when Bands try new sounds I already listened to Saviors on last Saturday and it's definitly better than Father Of All..., but Father Of All... will always be one of my favourites. Father Of All... was also my first Green Day Album I've heard
I've heard a lot Green Day Albums and my Top 5 Favourite Green Day Albums are: 5. Uno 4. Father Of All... 3. Saviors 2. Revolution Radio 1. American Idiot Honorable Mentions: 21st Century Breakdown, Dookie, Dos
The conversation around this album is so strange. It’s not their best but it’s not bad. It’s most certainly not the worst thing we’ve ever heard. At the end of the day, Green Day did what so many other acts have done in the past which is phone in the last contractual album to get off the label. If you’re a Green Day fan, you should be at least interested to hear the first independent Green Day record since Kerplunk. I think detractors are going to be surprised, much like when RevRad released and everybody decided “Hey, maybe we shouldn’t count them out yet”. Have some faith y’all 😂☝🏽
Cant say I haaate it, I still come back to Meet me on the roof quite often, but it’s definitely a weird record, I back the experimentation but I could never say “This is the way I want Green day to be” It’s still a Fun record, but that’s it
I basically agree. I’m not even sure what the average Green Day fan expects from them with future releases. Like they have to change it up a bit now and then.
I always found this album to be pretty okay, had some of their worst songs but like six of the songs were pretty neat. Graffitia was the standout for sure but since the album is so short it’s a pretty easy listen for me. I’d say like a 5 or 6, has its right to exist
Hot take: I prefer this to their previous album, Revolution Radio. No, it's not Green Day's best, but it's still a fun little garage rock revival album. It might go down to become Green Day's most underrated album.
I thought overall it wasn’t the best, but it had 3 tracks that in my opinion are their best 3 since the AI/21st CB era. Sugar Youth, Teenage Teenager, and Graffitia sound like long lost American idiot tracks which I loved
I still enjoy this album. Yeah it isn't super clever but nearly every song has fun best and hook. Also love how short the album is. I feel like they just wanted to go crazy and have fun with this record. It's light and fluffy and sometimes, that's all I need.
I never got what was so "fun" or "light and fluffy" about the album. Any time I've tried to go back listen to the album all the way through it's been a chore at only 26 minutes, and a pretty miserable time.
Funnily enough, watching this reminded me of this thing that went viral around the time, when a band called Panicland managed to convince a load of people that Green Day where simply putting Father Of All... out to get out of their label, while a more ambitious (and presumably better) project was to be released independently later on. That troll might actually be the best thing about this whole era 😂
Fire Ready Aim is actually my favorite from the album 😂 I can hear how commercial the sound is, but it still is. I keep coming back to a few songs like The title track, Stab You In The Heart Graffitia and of course Fire Ready Aim, so I wouldn't say its as bad as some think it is. Not nearly as good as what I'm hoping the next Green Day album will be, but still good
My thoughts have been the same since it came out. It's very meh. Some songs bore tf out of me, but I love Graffitia to pieces. I also will defend I Was a Teenage Teenager cause when I listen to it, I pretend it's a Weezer song. 😂
It's best to write: FOAMF is... And left it this way. When I was picking up five best tracks from every album I had HUGE problem with this one. Despite your choices I also like Sugar Youth and after these three tracks chosen I started to scratch my head thinking what to pick up next
I love this album, i know thats kinda weird, but i honestly had a lot of fun with it, i see why people hate it, its defenetly not their original sound, but i think there is not a skip on this one. Also, graffitia its on my top 5 green day songs, love that one!
This is kind of a trip - I remember commenting on that vid that while I was not into the album, I respected that you were and either way I appreciated your voice in this funny space that is music criticism. I’m not surprised that you’ve re-evaluated, only because that album really did feel like an “end of contract” sort of get it over with effort. Like random riffs from Billy Joe’s butt-rock fictional band “Muscle Car” or whatever.
When i go into listening to a new album from my favorite bands, i try to pretend it's not that band. Just listen to it as if you're listening to a no name up and coming band. This record is fun. There might be a few snoozers, but there's character in a lot of those songs. Overall, it's fun, and can get you dancing and singing in the car or while doing dishes..
Far and away the best part of FOAMF is that Tré gets to really let loose on the drums. His sound usually takes a back seat so it's nice to see a lot of punchy beats.
It's definitely not a very good album to me but hope to God they do bounce back with a return to form. My biggest issue is that it doesn't feel like Green Day.
That’s a valid take. There aren’t any songs here that are super well known outside the Green Day super-fans. When the general public thinks “Green Day” the first thing that comes to mind would be the obvious hit singles from Dookie, Nimrod, and American Idiot. And while this band have shaken up their style from the aforementioned albums before (albeit to much better fashion imo) most of those experiments aren’t nearly as super well known to the general public outside of Green Day’s fanbase.
@@theseth455 oh and I just can't stand Graffitia it reminds me of a cheesy music video of a volleyball match at the beach. But hey I've heard worse in that genre and in that year.
I think it’s always challenging when an artist you value highly releases something like this. For years, we always said the trilogy was the worst thing they made and hoped that it would be the lowest point of their discography, but I remember being so bummed that this one sank even lower for me. I think their next album is gonna be a huge improvement though
It's definitely an album with Green Day's name on it. That's about it. I do like, and very rarely but consistently come back to, Take The Money And Crawl
I regularly go back and listen to all the albums from the 10s. RevRad is easily the best, but trilogy and this are very replayable and simple to listen to. I can listen to it for the same reason people seem to dislike it, it's simple and easy.
I remember when I played Father of All album for many of my pop fan friends, most of them, especially girls, fell in love with Take the Money and Crawl.
When I saw the thumbnail for this video, I was like “Really? We’re throwing back to early 2020 already?”, but then I was like, “Actually that feels like it was 10 years ago”, so yeah, I’m fine with talking about it like it was the distant past. I don’t think I’ve listened to Father of All… since December 2020 when I wrote up a list of my least favorite albums I’d listened to that year. Pretty sure that’s the only time I listened to it since the month it came out. I still have zero desire to go back and re-evaluate it. Normally I wouldn’t get impatient with a half-hour long album, but they somehow found a way.
I genuinely see this album as a "We have to deliver one last album in order to free ourselves. Nobody said it had to be good or even a green day record."
I wasn’t a huge Green Day fan when it came out. I remember listening to boulevard of broken dreams when father of all came out. Probably for the best. I do wish I did start listening to them during quarantine.
I personally can still get into most of the album when I listen to it. I like FOAM and Fire Ready Aim quite a bit and I have next to no issues with the back half. Infact if I had to pick I’d say Take the money and crawl is possibly my favorite track on this one. Sure it’s not their best album by a longshot, but it’s passable. Also I fucking love the longshot now that I mention that word
Really interesting take on this album. As time had progressed since the albums release, i had slowly started growing alot more fond of the album and its songs. its not a good GREEN DAY album, but its a fun album that you could turn your brain off to and just chill with.
I don't think I'll ever LOVE it, but once they have another album, this one will feel a lot less like the anti-Christ to people since it'll just be something harmless from the past at that point
It’s funny, the two songs he strongly dislikes (Meet Me on the Roof and Teenaged Teenager) are actually my favorites, like by far. I think they give the album some much needed girth near the middle. It’s straight pop done very well, nothing fancy, just great melodies and hooks. The Pitchfork review also lauded these two songs as the album’s saving grace. I think they gave the album a 6.5, and they are generally much harder on Green Day. Junkies On A High is great and I don’t mind the “overproduced” vibe. I think it works and feels like a sad but worthwhile meditation on the songwriters state of mind. The title track is highly underrated and nice to see them doing something different. It’s crazy how they have washed their hands of these songs so quickly. I would love to get more info on the making of the album and why marketing was handled so poorly. I’m still trying to decide if the album itself was a risky business decision or just haphazardly decent. My grade: B-
I was a Green Day fan for over 15 years, grew up with them in my life and have seen them 3 times, and I’ve never been able to listen to anything past their 21st Century Breakdown album. Sorry to admit this lol.
In my opinion, it was a "troll" album to finish their contract but I'll always defend the song Graffitia! It's their worst album but I still love them. I hope their next album has the energy similar to Rev Rad.
I loved Green Day with Kerplunk, and then I pretty much forgot about them until this year. I went back and listened to all the albums I missed, and this was the only one that had zero songs I liked. Which is insane to me, because I love Saviors so much. I thought perhaps they were just past being able to make good music, like the Rolling Stones. Which is fine, people still go to their shows. But I just can't understand what happened with this album.
I saw Green Day in 2017 and saw them again in 2021. The set list was even better the second time with the only newest song they played was the new single released after the album. Not only that but they also played september which I thought they never performed live. They didn’t play it the first time I saw them
They pretty much dropped September after the tour for 21CB, and then brought it back a couple times before the RevRad tour, and iirc they didn't play it at all between 2016 and 2021
The first three tracks slap, the rest are ok imo. I love the songs I like tho because they had a different sound, showing they're still growing as artists. They're a GOAT
I bought this album on cd the day it came out, liked it the first run through, and then rapidly had the same realization you did. I like sugar youth but still only listen to it a handful of times a year
I've listened to this album exactly twice. Once when it first came out. I hated absolutely everything about it so much I vowed to never listen to it again. Gave it a year or so and thought, maybe I should give it one more chance, maybe I was too hard on it. So I listened again, only for it to reaffirm my utter hatred of it. So no more listens from me. Not on purpose anyway.
Honestly the thing that really sours me on the album is the vocal effects Billie used. Some of the lyrics and guitar riffs I actually really like and the melodic catchy energy it has is great at parts. But I think it would have been more accepted if Rev Rad had never came out. After the trilogy this sort of feels like the natural progression from the 3 albums but Rev Rad was Green Day merging dookie and AI into one so this felt like a roller coaster. I am really excited however for the rumoured 1972 album next year.
I truly believe this album was just a fuck you to their label. Last album on the label, I think they may have just been unhappy with something and just wanted the album to tank so then they could be under their own label.
September 10th, 2019 to be exact, I still remember that day. Hella Mega was going to be my first time seeing all four bands that performed. I went to the DC and Pittsburgh shows.
That’s the main thing I had with FOA. I liked the title track, which made me think the album would be decent, but I was left with an album that felt soulless and skeletal.
I just started listening to this album again and found myself liking it more than I originally did. But I'll definitely agree it was kind of a let down in comparison to their previous works. Especially since it came out after my favorite album from Green Day: Revolution Radio.
If that 1981 song is going on the album that’s a good sign. Definitely closer to that Green Day signature punk sound. Just hoping the lyrics are a step up from this album too though (although it does have it’s good moments lyrically).
@@theseth455 1981 sounds like a great song from the clips I’ve heard. I definitely think it’s more Green Day. FOAMF was just very unfortunate and I think they fixed their mistake because 1981 is giving me hope. And I do agree that they should step up lyrically, because when I listen to Green Day I expect their amazing relatable poetry like in songs like burnout or revolution radio.
I really liked “Revolution Radio” but I skipped this one as the few singles I heard didn’t do it for me. Hopefully now that pop-punk is a little more back in fashion we might see a return to form in the next album.

Also your original review was totally fine. I was blown away by some of the hate you were getting lol.
Can't wait for Todd to do a Trainwreckords on this one
This album is not at all my favorite by them, but I genuinely enjoy listening to it. It’s super fun, and light hearted, and it honestly just makes me want to dance.
i so hope they bounce back hard after Father of All. i'm a massive defender of the trilogy but even i have to say Revolution Radio was a step in the right direction for Green Day
Same.
The funniest part about this album’s rollout is that everyone thought it was so bad that it had to be a joke until a surprise album, an actual good one, would come out later
We were really living in glass houses in 2020
I respect the honesty and willingness to admit you were wrong. That’s what I enjoy about your videos, your honesty and willingness to share with us when you change your mind on something. I enjoy these reviews. I hope you’ll do one for Hozier’s upcoming album unreal unearth once it releases.
Agreed
It's definitely not an album i go back to often but gotta say it has some alright stuff on it
I agree with this a lot. I was pleasantly surprised on FOAs release date. And then just forgot the album existed not much later. Every once in a while I’ll turn it on, but it doesn’t take long before I just put on a better Green Day album lol
I can summarise Father Of All MF in these words.
“A Quick Overview of Over-Production: The Album.”
My Ranking is:
1. Father Of All...
2. Meet Me On The Roof
3. Take The Money And Crawl
4. Graffitia
5. Fire, Ready, Aim

8. Stab You In The Heart
9. Oh Yeah!
10. I Was A Teenage Teenager
I listen music for fun and to make me happy. And this Album definitly does it for me. That's why it's one of my fav Albums of all time. I Also, love it when Bands try new sounds
I already listened to Saviors on last Saturday and it's definitly better than Father Of All..., but Father Of All... will always be one of my favourites. Father Of All... was also my first Green Day Album I've heard
I've heard a lot Green Day Albums and my Top 5 Favourite Green Day Albums are:
5. Uno
4. Father Of All...
3. Saviors
2. Revolution Radio
1. American Idiot
Honorable Mentions:
21st Century Breakdown, Dookie, Dos
okay but their new song 1981 goes crazy hard
The conversation around this album is so strange. It’s not their best but it’s not bad. It’s most certainly not the worst thing we’ve ever heard.
At the end of the day, Green Day did what so many other acts have done in the past which is phone in the last contractual album to get off the label. If you’re a Green Day fan, you should be at least interested to hear the first independent Green Day record since Kerplunk. I think detractors are going to be surprised, much like when RevRad released and everybody decided “Hey, maybe we shouldn’t count them out yet”.
Have some faith y’all 😂☝🏽
Cant say I haaate it, I still come back to Meet me on the roof quite often, but it’s definitely a weird record, I back the experimentation but I could never say “This is the way I want Green day to be” It’s still a Fun record, but that’s it
I still fucking love this album, I don't care if anyone else likes it. It's a fun and catchy album that doesn't overstay its welcome.
I basically agree. I’m not even sure what the average Green Day fan expects from them with future releases. Like they have to change it up a bit now and then.
It's just an album celebrating 50's and 60's rock n roll. I think it's a fantastic album.
You got it on the nose
I never got what was so "fun" or "light and fluffy" about the album. Any time I've tried to go back listen to the album all the way through it's been a chore at only 26 minutes, and a pretty miserable time.
Funnily enough, watching this reminded me of this thing that went viral around the time, when a band called Panicland managed to convince a load of people that Green Day where simply putting Father Of All... out to get out of their label, while a more ambitious (and presumably better) project was to be released independently later on. That troll might actually be the best thing about this whole era 😂
I’ve always like the album, I’ve actually liked it more as time had passed
Was just listening to “oh yeah” like minutes ago on my drive home my phone was on shuffle 😂
I heard it once or twice. Its an alright album. Kinda like an album that gets played on a road trip
Father of all is my favourite Green day album atm
Teenager reminds me of a Bush song in terms of the verse progression
I honestly love that song
Yeah Teenager is a fucking banger. Love it
It's best to write: FOAMF is... And left it this way. When I was picking up five best tracks from every album I had HUGE problem with this one. Despite your choices I also like Sugar Youth and after these three tracks chosen I started to scratch my head thinking what to pick up next
I always knew this video could come out any time
The title track still fucks six ways to sunday, but i cannot for the life of me tell you what anything else on this album sounds like
All songs are terrible
Yeah I was willing to give it a shot because I genuinely like the title track but then was horrified
1972 should be a banger. They’ve got rob cavalo and are recording it in the studio that American Idiot was record in.
I actually quite like FOAMF. It sounds a more refreshing and creative than the last few records.
@@theseth455yoooo I love the song Junkies on a High
I think it’s always challenging when an artist you value highly releases something like this. For years, we always said the trilogy was the worst thing they made and hoped that it would be the lowest point of their discography, but I remember being so bummed that this one sank even lower for me. I think their next album is gonna be a huge improvement though
I've haven't watched the Oh Yeah music video so one thing caught my eye at 9:02. The news reporter looked liked Mike Lindell the MyPillow guy.
I was thinking Rob Delaney but yeah maybe along with a little bit of that MyPillow guy’s look as well now that you mention it.
@@theseth455 When I saw him I said was that Mike Lindell?
Been following you since 2020 so it's mental to see that we finally agree on this album 3 years later your first review lmao
Remember when we thought it was gonna be American Idiot 2 LMFAO!!!!!!!
This is a totally fair review. What did you think of 1981?
Live snippet I heard sounds dope. Billie's voice was struggling but I'm excited for the studio version ofc
Gonna be great studio version
I used to hate this album just because of critics but now I appreciate it especially when you do read into the lyrics
Then we got the awesome Saviors!!
I genuinely see this album as a "We have to deliver one last album in order to free ourselves. Nobody said it had to be good or even a green day record."
I actually enjoyed it pretty much from the beginning, the only thing I have to criticise about the album is that it’s way too short
I wasn’t a huge Green Day fan when it came out. I remember listening to boulevard of broken dreams when father of all came out. Probably for the best. I do wish I did start listening to them during quarantine.
The only thing that stills bothers me since then, despite enjoying the album, is that some songs and especially the album cover seems to be SO LAZY
Someone send help I really loved this album 😭
Some decent songs on revolution radio
Same. Even 21st was disappointing to me.
Hey Jon!! A Bunch of us are trying to revive the Green Day Amino since it’s been almost silent for about a year.
I don’t know how often you check in on it but we’d love to have you back there, especially with the recent 1981 reveal
I remember when it came out, so many people where convinced that it was made purposely terrible, artwork included
Yes I listened to this precisely once, 3 years ago, and never again
I’m right there with you: Father of All and Graffitia are the only tracks I’ve returned to. This album unfortunately never had a leg to stand on.
In my opinion, it was a "troll" album to finish their contract but I'll always defend the song Graffitia! It's their worst album but I still love them. I hope their next album has the energy similar to Rev Rad.
You nailed it with the hella mega take
I loved Green Day with Kerplunk, and then I pretty much forgot about them until this year.
Green Day’s St Anger to squeeze out the last bunny turd of a record contract. Predictably terribly.
I loved this album it was so different and refreshing
Idk about this album but I’m still pissed they cancelled the Toronto Hella Mega Tour stop and never rescheduled it because what a lineup 😭
I truly believe this album was just a fuck you to their label. Last album on the label, I think they may have just been unhappy with something and just wanted the album to tank so then they could be under their own label.
At 1:55 did you mean September 2019? :)
September 10th, 2019 to be exact, I still remember that day. Hella Mega was going to be my first time seeing all four bands that performed. I went to the DC and Pittsburgh shows.
Yep, wow idk how I didn’t notice that 😅
Graffita slaps to this day
I love this album so much
That’s the main thing I had with FOA. I liked the title track, which made me think the album would be decent, but I was left with an album that felt soulless and skeletal.
I love this album..Oh,Yeah!!
I just started listening to this album again and found myself liking it more than I originally did. But I'll definitely agree it was kind of a let down in comparison to their previous works. Especially since it came out after my favorite album from Green Day: Revolution Radio.
I am just so hoping that their new album is more punk.
Your honesty has set you free, John....now go throw on Nimrod and rock out, buddy😂🙂
Pulling out the box set as we speak 🫡
