@@fowlae4414 Yeah, but the Beatles also have the generational advantage. Most grandparents, at least in my experience, are there to tell their kids and grandkids of the Beatles. Green Day can at most be passed down from parents. Both massive bands for different reasons and as such, cannot be compared.

Loved this! This record changed my life, too. Very similarly, I used to only listen to the radio or the "Now! That's What I Call Music" compilations, haha. But I heard "Boulevard" on the radio one day in 2004, and it caught my ear. My uncle let me borrow his copy of the album and my mind was blown. It inspired me to teach myself guitar and start writing my own material. I became instantly obsessed with them. Went out and got all of their other records. (I also went to Hot Topic and bought all of their merch, lol.) After about a year of listening to nothing but Green Day, they also inspired me to start looking for similar bands because I knew that the whole vibe and energy of that early 2000s "pop/punk/rock" genre was definitely what spoke to me.
That's when I discovered Fall Out Boy one morning in '05, watching music videos on MTV in the morning before school. Panic! naturally followed in '05-'06 with Fever. And ever since then I haven't been able to "fall in love" with another band. They're my three. I have tattoos for all of them. But, Green Day will ALWAYS be number 1. (My Green Day tattoo is actually just a simple red star outlined in black, as a little tribute to this record and what it means to me) I just saw them at the House of Blues on Oct. 1st and ended up crying my eyes out during "Letterbomb" (my favorite) and "Jesus Of Suburbia." I kept telling myself "Enjoy this moment for 12-year-old You." ...and just lost it. So, yeah. This was awesome! And I think it's so funny how much I relate to your Green Day videos (as well as your FOB & Panic! stuff!)

This album holds a pretty special place in my heart as well. My mom is a big green day fan so I grew up with albums like Dookie but there was definitely an increase in love when this album dropped. My mom and I followed the pre release of this record and once it came out we both instantly loved it. It followed me throughout middle school (I used to listen to it every night before I went to bed) and even all these years later I do still love it. I can see why you'd call this your favorite album ever Jon especially if it holds so much personal significance to you.

I'm sorry to hear that you grew up in an environment very unaccepting of this music. Coming back here when Green Day is becoming my favorite band and American Idiot is becoming my favorite album.... As I mature, I start to see Green Day as being so much more personal and relatable to me. And I'm thanking you, Jon, because you showed me these guys. You showed me they were this amazing. And you're the reason I found the super personal song Wake Me Up When September Ends. Thanks, for being on RUclips at all.

Really dude, I could listen to your reviews over and over and over. You're so passionate, so accurate, plus I'm so related to how you feel about American Idiot in the first place. This album means the world to me. Back then it changed my perspectives and my musical views forever. Keep up this way man, greetings from Italy!!

+ARTV i love that you actually respond to fans, it's actually pretty nice, id love to discuss all things music with you lol especially Green Day. Also I know it's random, but you should do a throwback review for switchfoots vice verses, I'd love to know what you think of that album, because for me that's what got me into them. Also can't wait to here what you think of revolution radio, I feel it's gonna be a huge record, bring Green Day back in form.

God I love hearing you speak so passionately about music. This is why you're my favourite RUclipsr! This album means a hell of a lot to me and watching you get choked up talking about wake me up when September ends really hit me hard because of the personal meaning I find in that song. Fantastic review as usual, Jon! Happy 7 years - Can't wait to see more amazing content in the future!

Jesus of Suburbia is my favorite song of all time. ‘Give me Novocain’ is also amazing. Those two songs are helping me through a rejection that has hurt me so much. She was my everything, but she drenched my heart in gasoline and lit it. I love her, but she punched me in the face with a cold hard rejection that hurt me more than the rejection itself, but how it makes me realize what all these years of work have built up to a raging destruction of my heart. This whole album just channels my emotions so well. I love it so much. I will love this album forever.

Incredible review. I love that you had the perfect balance of objective criticism and personal attachment. I was hoping you would speak about your own emotional connection to the songs and album as a whole and I was not disappointed. American Idiot is the greatest album of all time and you honoured and spoke about it so amazingly. Thanks man! (My favourite tracks are: Jesus of Suburbia, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Homecoming and St. Jimmy... and all of the rest)

This is awesome. American Idiot is my favorite album of all time, and the album I grew up to. It's been there for me with tracks like Jesus of Suburbia and We Are the Waiting whenever I was in need of some assurance that I wasn't the only one feeling lost in the world, and it holds a really special place in my heart. Congratulations on 7 years by the way, I loved this video and a lot of your others as well :)

I agree completely. In my humble opinion, is the greatest album, and one of the best albums that I've ever heard with Californication by the RCP, and Meteora, by Linkin park. I was doing a review in my music school, and I have to do a conference related with how American Idiot was studied (harmonically, by the structure, and so on), and it undoubtedly is a masterpiece.

This album is my favorite album of all time. The story is about being lost and I have definitely gone through those thoughts many, many times. However, the songs definitely stand on their own especially Wake me up when september ends. Every time I listen to that song, I start to tear up especially when I see it live. Music is definitely the best way to convey your feelings and thoughts to the world and Green Day proves it here.

Johhny Test introduced me to American Idiot, because the comments sections were filled with "theme song ripped off Green Day American Idiot". and then I watched Journey 2, and thought the song at the beginning sounded familiar, so I watched the credits to find the song was Letterbomb, by Green Day. next stop, RUclips, to play the whole song. I slowly listened to the rest of the album, and bought it along with RevRad about a month later, and then TFCB a few more months later. I'm slowly getting to their older music, but since hearing them for the first time, they've become one of my favorite bands.

I had such a good run with this record, the very first album I ever bought from the alternative world back in 04 or 05, God the memories with this album. I loved listening to this review because I totally feel everything you're saying. I also owe everything to this record, absolutely. First came this and then Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and From Under the Cork Tree. American Idiot is so important to me and so many others obviously, it's absolutely timeless and just perfect. Whatsername particularly fucks me up these days. But yes, thank you for this review, it seriously let me relive a ton of emotions and I'm gonna have to spin this one again from start to finish asap.
