Celebrate 15 years of American Idiot with me as I rank every song the iconic album! I’d love to know some of your best memories of this record, leave it in the comments 😄

Just realized today that it was its 15 anniversary because I really couldn't sleep at all so I was on reddit reading up some of the theories on MOOTIK and I found out it was American Idiot's birthday.
It gave me a fuzzy feeling, i thought it had more years but feels very old at the same time. I dunno if i can explain it, it's just something I kinda took for granted.
While i don't listen to Green Day all that often nowadays, this record was something I heard every single day during 2015-2016. It was alongside me during very lonely days, haha.

If it works for a story, while I don't have any in specific besides listening to whatsername on New Year's Eve, I did have a constant thing I did while listening to it.
I always loved drawing and I really want to animate stuff, so while listening to the album I was visualizing the complete story and the way I'd direct it and stuff.
I used to mix the characters of 21st century breakdown with the american idiot storyline and it gave this strangely cohesive narrative in my mind.
I loved doing that and i fantasized about it a lot, i dunno if i still have some of the drawings but i did some of them, i guess those are some of the experiences i have with the album.
I also remember being infatuated with "whatsername" and listening to it during new year's to receive the new year(as redundat as that sounds).

I also had this friend with whom i listened a ton of music with. American Idiot was one of his favourite albums, along with Gorillaz's Demon Days, which used to be a staple when I used to go to his house). We used to listen to it quite a ton, as well as a ton of music in general.
Sadly though, he had to move out of the country because her mom found a job in the US and felt that it could be better for him out there. I really miss him a ton as he was my only friend and talking to him though messages now isn't the same(as well as doing it once in a blue moon). I really wish I could share more music with him and show him some new stuff I've been listening to, but I'm also happy that for him.
Just as a fun detail, his favourite song of the record was "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", so I guess he's like you, Jon!
Anyway, sorry for just rambling a lot. It's been a strange day, haha.

My dad bought me American Idiot on CD on my first day of secondary school and my life has never been the same since.
I can’t rank all of the songs but I know that Whatsername is my number 1. The raw emotion in this song makes me cry every time. Not only does it strike a personal chord with me, but also it makes me think of others in similar positions. The American Idiot Musical version of the song is really good as well. The violin at the end is almost haunting. This is probably my favourite Green Day song.
Also, even though Whatsername is my favourite, I can’t go without talking about Letterbomb. It starts off as what you think as only a great punk song with banging drums and guitars. However, it is one of the most emotional tracks on the album. And once again, when this song was in the musical, I saw it entirely through Whatsername’s perspective. How she didn’t completely ruin Jimmy. To some extent she was affected in a worse way by what happened between them.

American Idiot appeared on Madden 05, Holiday on that Tony Hawk game and I’d always see the music videos to Wake Me Up When September Ends and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams on VH1 and MTV back in 2004. I never listened to the American Idiot album all the way through until 2018. And when I did, I appreciated music and Green Day’s music even more. One of the best albums I’ve ever listened to. I first heard Jesus of Suburbia when I was eight years old, I was in a friends house watching tv when it came on, and I knew in that moment I’d found my favourite band.
I bought the record a few weeks later in a book store and it genuinely changed my life and made me who I am today.
It also legitimately saved my life, I do not say that lightly at all, I was in a coma a few months after I turned nine (car crash, long story) and my entire family was told I wouldn’t make it through the night, so my mam brought in my boombox with my copy of American Idiot and just played it on repeat the entire night.
Needless to say, I survived the night, but then the doctors said if I survived at all, I’d be pretty much brain dead, but still my mam played this record on repeat, and one night when WMUWSE was playing, I started to move my lips to the words, and I was showing my first signs of brain activity since the crash.
That’s why I got lyrics from WMUWSE tattooed for my first tattoo; “As my memory rests but never forgets what I lost.” with a pocket watch - I’m physically disabled for life because some asshole decided to go for a drive after a few glasses of whiskey, and I’ll never forget the life that I could have lived if things were different, I’ll never forget what I lost, but I’m putting that to rest.

God, I love hearing you talk about Green Day. You gave such amazing reasons and details for why you ranked each song as such. Good job!
American Idiot is my favourite album of all time and has been so important to me for the last 15 years too. I've always felt very similar to you because of that. Kind of makes sad when thinking about how Green Day has been ever since but, ah well, I won't let that bring me down.

When I was 11 years old in foster care, my foster parents bought me a “cars” themed CD player with one Cd and one Cd only. American idiot. It’s the soundtrack to my childhood. Every song on it makes me feel alive when I listen. “Homecoming” is quite literally one of the most epic songs I’ve ever heard and I still get chills listening to it. It’s one thing to love music, but I feel sheer gratitude to this record. It made me who I am. Simply a masterpiece.

Damn what a tough exercise. Here’s mine:
    13. Extraordinary Girl - with you. Compared to the rest, it’s forgettable, but I love the intro. It would not be the worst on any other GD album.
    12. She’s a Rebel - the drumming, as is Tre Cool’s signature, has a lot of hidden impressive moments. This one isn’t as replayable as the rest. It’s a great track. It’s a shame it has to be this low.
    11. American Idiot - I was critical of your placement...until I had to rank myself. Damn is this album amazing.
    10. St. Jimmy - love the lyrics and energy. It can get stale after a lot of listens, but it’s awesome and integral for the album.
    9. Holiday - yet again, can’t BELIEVE this song is so low. I love Holiday. Every time it hits the C chord it’s so calculated and effective. Great protest song.
    8. Letterbomb - this song has some amazing energy and urgency to it. It picks up right when the album is in as close to a lull as it gets. Great lyrics and guitar. Excellent.
    7. Are We the Waiting - I absolutely love the drumming and arpeggiated guitar. The lyrics are very dreamy and the chorus is powerful. Probably in GD’s top 25 songs or so even at #7.
    6. Give Me Novocaine - the segment after the first chorus is so relaxing, and I love the beat and acoustic progression. I think this song has immense replayability and is soothing to the ears, and the chorus’ energy is just enough that it fits everything else.
    5. Boulevard of Broken Dreams - even if this is #5, the coda is probably my favorite part of the whole record. Lyrics are incredible, love the progression, I feel like this one had to be one of the greatest efforts on the album. It just has a lot of competition.
    4. Jesus of Suburbia - an epic song championed by many as the greatest song by Green Day. I love this everything about it. City of the Damned in particular has hauntingly good lyrics. Just great work and an amazing introduction to the story.
    3. Whatsername - the more I listen to this song, the more I appreciate it. It is a masterful closer and has a vibe that I can’t quite find anywhere else. I love the beat in the beginning, the rising action, and then the end with the guitar motif coming back. It’s so emotive and catchy. It used to be one of my least listened to, but it has amazing replayability.
    2. Wake Me Up When September Ends - I mean, what is there to say about this one? It is so moving. A perfect power ballad. It is really relatable, too, if you lose a loved one. Lyrics are beautiful, arrangement is perfect, the dynamic shifts are epic. This is one of the best songs Billie Joe has ever written and it came from the heart.
    1. Homecoming - the ultimate grower song. I feel like this one requires a few listens to fully appreciate. The transitions are perfect, the movements are refreshingly different, and I love how much it comes across how much fun the band was having. This song really feels like a journey, and I think it’s #1.

Boulevard Of Broken Dreams was the first Green Day song I ever heard and loved. Also this fantastic album really got me into music as a teen.
I mostly agree with your ranking, though I'd put American Idiot and Holiday higher on the list simply because they are such bold, fun songs. Though they are more political and have little to do with the story of the album.
Wake Me Up When September Ends will always be a song that moves me to the core. Also I'm glad you put Letterbomb so high! I feel like it's quite underrated. And you're right Jesus Of Suburbia is THE song to describe this album. It's Green Days Bohemian Rhapsody.

For me it would have to go:
    1. Jesus of Suburbia
    2. Boulevard of Broken Dreams
    3. American Idiot
    4. Holiday
    5. Wake Me Up When September Ends

As John said in the video, I dot hate of these songs. But the difference between his list and my list is how much I like each song over each other and not how much each song is relevant to the albums story.

My favorite will always be Homecoming, love how it ties a bow around the story and settles loose ends. Also "I fell asleep while watching Spike TV" is pretty much how I feel always.
