    I hate how people mystify music theory, or act like it's some sort of arbitrary set of laws. It's just a tool to look at music through, literally a form of literacy that learning can help you better conceptualize why the things you hear sound the way they do, and a framework you CAN CHOOSE to use when making music. But I suppose the idea of 'evil cabal of musigicians' is appealing to people who want to rage about not knowing stuff.

      Nothing wrong in not using basic music theory at all. But I know alil myself after getting really bored and just decided to learn music theory through jazz guitar which was a gener I loved listening to. It's a helpful thing to have because i can make decisions much faster without thinking too much. Then when I got something basic I start to expand from there and usually abandon any really structure or rules. This way it sounds good flows well and it's too basic then it's all gravy

      @AzureWolf168I’ve been producing and composing for a few years and I’m studying composition in school, and the general consensus even from professors that have doctorates is that what you make will never sound exactly like what’s in your head. You can try and get close, but it’ll always be different somehow. My advice is to embrace it and go where the song takes you, not where you want it to go. Also try learning basic music theory, it’s actually really simple and you can find good videos on RUclips about it. Hope that helped :)

      I'll be honest my composing has gotten WAY better over time as you start familiarizing yourself with basic theory and how certain chords sound and feel can really streamline your production... but when I listen back to the first things I wrote you can hear I just put everything into it because I didn't know the "rules" so I had none lol I think the best line to ride is learning enough to guide you to how you want to sound but never feel locked into theory or what others tell you is right.

      You would be surprised by how many great musicians wrote songs that went to the top of the charts without knowing a single line of music theory. Did they use pre-made packs? Nope... They sat down with their instrument or sampler, and tried things until something made "sense" for them musically speaking. They could have learned theory and cut the time needed for exploration, but that would kill their creativity because knowing theory they would never try something they were told "won't work"; and that means no innovation would ever happen.

      Knowing theory isn't gonna stop experimentation. If anything, knowing what's "expected" or "common" often leads people to try new things out *because* it's not what's expected.
      I really don't see why people are so averse to learning about the things they're into. Learning music theory isn't so much about learning "rules that must be followed", as much as it is learning about how to identify and describe aspects of music in a concrete way.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 2 года назад +3

      @@kohai-kun9261 I didn't exclude that theory can lead to breakthrough and innovation; but it is clear that most of the great things happening in music history were not only driven by knowledge, but at times by the lack of knowledge.
      When you know "something", you are setting yourself in a box with well defined walls; going outside these walls is something that our brain does implicitly; because we are used to accept some things as being true, and live and operate in the realm of what is true.
      If you would know nothing about physics, you could think about creative ways to explain what gravity is, because you can "feel it"; and yet you have no clue of the theory behind it.
      For music you can't follow the same process because it is not something you feel and there is room for getting it right in different ways. Music either sound good or not, and that is what theory teach you. Once you are bound to those rules that make music sound good, you follow them and avoid to go out of that path.
      Learning is not wrong; nobody is against it; and the only ones against it are lazy people that do not want to put time in it, and just look for a way to get good at something or make money in the easy way.
      From my perspective you need a base of theory to do anything, but when you start to fill the voids on your own, you may end up in places that others have been already (so you wasted time, because you could read a book to learn it), but you may also end up in a different place you would probably not end up if you were only following what you know.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 2 года назад +3

      @@carbdebunkshate8967 Some musicians write their song before even know what a scale or the circle of 5th is. And when they learn it they improve their work (sometimes it ruin it but that is a different story).
      You don't need to be an expert to write music or play an instrument; you need the right skillset, a good dose of patience and inspiration.
      Then if the results are a masterpiece or garbage, that is up to debate. I listen to music that sound like garbage of mixed sounds with no interesting qualities, and those are called artists. If I need to study to understand why that noise is considered music, then it is not art anymore.
      I get feelings listening to music, looking at a painting or a sculpture; that is what art is all about

      Yeah when I heard the price I lol'd because it made me think about AAA video games which cost less than that typically ($60 or so). While those are also somewhat debatable in quality and how they are priced at times, the better examples still represent many man-years of work by teams of dozens or hundreds of people. The chord packs aren't even close to deserving a pricetag like that.

    I collaborated with a young producer once who has produced a couple of songs already and I was just starting. The only difference was I have been learning music theory since I was 14. I was blown away to find out how this young producer does not have an ounce of idea on how chord progression came to be in the first place. He was clueless on what a major and a minor progression is about and when I told him, we are gonna use Key of G, I-V-IV modulating up half step for the Outro and will end in G#, he looked at me as if I am speaking an alien language or maybe Klingon.

They can devote it to either learning music theory or learning all the other skills of their craft. Just learn some rudimentary music theory, overtime you will get a functional/practical palette of chord progressions and voicings, and ofc youll pick them up from music you love. Over the past decade though I have slowly learned that I have to buckle down and learn everything I can about music if I want to be the best I can be at song-writing, arranging, and performing. However, I still find my self from time to time thinking about short-cut methods sold by smooth salesmen. Fortunatly they usually sound phishy or have obtrusive ads to try and get you to by immediately that I research them and don't purchase their product. You have taken an important step, but you are still missing the true power and purpose of music. The actual purpose of music is to create powerful vibrations that will uplift the human race and help us create a better future for the planet. But not everybody is cut out for that path, it it is a difficult road that requires discipline, dedication, compassion, humility, courage, and sacrifice. But if that is not your path, perhaps at least through your studies you can begin to understand how music can impact human consciousness, and which kinds of vibrations have the most powerful positive impact on humans in different circumstances.

    Despite having written my own sequences for years, I got a MIDI chord pack once out of curiosity(it had arpeggiation lines and articulations, so I would certainly rank it above generic chords), and that was all it took for me to figure out that no MIDI pack would actually help me make better music.
    If I had to give one piece of real advice to beginners who are interested in getting harmony "over with", it's simply that they should focus entirely on using notes within a scale, the smaller the scale, the better - when you want to impose a specific feel to the harmony, turn it into a progression: select a new scale that overlaps the old one(e.g. D pentatonic to D major) and continue from there. Now you have a track that can engage with some complexity while only considering a tiny subset of the notes on the keyboard at any one time. This vastly reduces the trial and error aspects of building up chords and makes harmonization speedy even without specific theories of chord progression. Automation/correction tools just add "icing on the cake" to this approach by eliminating your errors.
