I love and appreciate the analysis, even though Hot Fuss is not a concept album. The lack of "Leave The Bourbon On The Shelf" already kills the whole story because the song is part of the Murder Trilogy. And I think only that trilogy has a consistent concept inside. "Mr Brightside" is about a girl and it has a sequel "Miss Atomic Bomb" so it seems like a completely different story altogether. Maybe there was a bigger concept at some point but it was abandoned before the album was finished. It's almost like Flowers ran out of steam trying to put the story together and they just patched Hot Fuss with the best songs they had. That's why the album is a mess plot-wise but it sounds great musically. Still, your analysis makes sense of it anyway so good job! IMO Hot Fuss is a concept album in the way Wonderful Wonderful is a concept album about Brandon's wife's PTSD and his own life growing up in Nevada. It's a loose concept but it has its themes.
it's good to know i'm not the only one who spent a long amount of time overanalyzing hot fuss lol. but honestly this is such a good take !! i have my own order for how i think it goes (the story is very similar) and it was really cool seeing yours !
5 years late to the party but this take always made a LOT of sense to me personally and people i knew would constantly kii about the possibility of Hot Fuss being a queer forbidden love story. i always identified with the lyrical content and theme of this album growing up as a queer person when this originally dropped and regardless of Brandon’s intent, he managed to craft a very BROADLY reaching narrative that speaks directly to the experience of closeted youth in america! art is meant to be interpreted and this is a deeply thoughtful example of just that. amazing ❤️
This is like level 5 Killers and I'm only on level 3. Didn't know it went deeper than it already was. No wonder people think im gay after I force the killers on them. Great video and I love the emotion and power behind their songs from the lyrics to the beat. Thanks!
What a well explained story! I've been willing to get to know the full story behind the album for so long, but nobody could explain it better than you. Thanks!
This is an interesting take. And while the band has stated some of these things (the fact that Jenny was a friend of mine and Midnight Show are 2 parts of the murder trilogy, along with Put the Bourbon on the shelf, from Sawdust) I don't believe that they've ever confirmed that songs like Mr. Brightside are connected to that story at all. I can certainly see it being true but it's tough to buy into without them confirming that sort of thing. Another thing... a line in "Andy you're a star" literally says "Andy, you're a star... in nobodies eyes but mine" but you said the whole town loves Andy... that seems a bit contradictory.
To be honest I'm not sure a lot of this is quite right, but it's certainly a solid analysis -- I think that Hot Fuss as a whole is not a concept album, but that the songs bundled into it complement the murder trilogy moreso than actually extending it -- I saw a good theory a while back on how each song fits into the parts of the trilogy but I don't remember where I saw it.
An enjoyable view! Thanks. Btw, for all Killers fans, listen to this; I'm about to see The Killers live for the 10th time. I've seen the guys at Wembley Stadium, Royal Albert Hall and in August it's Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. Get in!!!
@Mitch Ddhfacetyy >Music videos don’t always match up with the song, You're absolutely right. REM's Losing My Religion is about someone in love and obsessed with someone else and "losing your religion" is a way to say "losing your composure" in the southern US. While the music video implies a whole different thing about faith.
I love this video and how you draw! I feel that Somebody Told Me is moreso Jenny threatening to ruin Andy's image with Andy's relationship with Brightside. The lyric "Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight" can be either interpreted as Jenny hearing rumors and trying to confirm that the reason she was broken up with was because of Andy dating this boy because it makes HER look bad, or Andy trying to convince Jenny that he isn't dating Mr. Brightside when she confronts him about it. Which, while this isn't enough to drive a person to murder, it's a bit more convincing to me than simply Jenny calling Andy/Brightside a slur. It could've been a mixture of the two. I also feel that Andy never got arrested, mainly because of his popularity in the town. Like, how could the golden boy kill someone? This also makes a connection back to Andy You're A Star with the lyric "On the streets, such a sweet face jumping in town , in the staffroom, the verdict is in". It talks about the court case of the murder of Jenny and how Andy went from being that sweet, popular football star to being in a courtroom on a trial for murder. Everything Will Be Alright's lyric of "I never knew, I never knew" can mean multiple things, either that he never knew he would end up in a situation like this in the first place, that he would ever fall in love with some random guy, or both. "So take your suitcase, cause I don't mind" supports your idea that Mr. Brightside leaves town completely and Andy doesn't stop him, he understands why he is leaving but feels conflicted because he still loves him. I always had this interpretation of the story, and you were able to make points that I wasn't able to make. Fantastic video.
i love how nobody in the comments understood that you just wanted to connect the songs in a cool way. even if your opinion isnt official, i really love it ! and i had fun watching this video. (im a bit late lol)
From what I've gathered elsewhere, Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf is officially the first part of a Murder Trilogy, along with Midnight Show and Jenny Was a Friend of Mine.
Mr Brightside is 100% about a guy and a girl, the song is about Brandon Flowers being cheated, there are two videos confirming it is a guy and a girl, The Mr Brightside music video and the Miss Atomic Bomb music video.
Finn all of this was just for fun! None of what I said was probably the intention of the band, it was just an interesting thought I had and I wanted to see it I could make it work. I’m aware of the contradictions to music videos and songs that are based on the band members actual lives, I just wanted to try and connect all the songs in a cool way!
This was fun, great analysis! It got me thinking about Believe Me Natalie. My interpretation is she could know what Mr Brightside did and maybe even covered for him/helped him get rid of evidence, but now she wants to confess and Mr Brightside is trying to convince her not to, arguing her life could be over if she does. I also have an alternative story where there's only Andy, Jenny and Natalie, and Natalie's the one who has a crush on Andy and helps him commit the murder.
very interesting video i have seen another theory linked to midnight show jenny was a friend of mine and a song from sawdust called leave the bourbon on the shelf
''coming out of my cage'' I thought that was about a guy seeing the girl with another guy and not avoiding it and it bothers him? he's trying to face it but he can't.
I feel like hot fuss is about a guy learning to let go of his relationship with his career, he will do anything to save it, but in the end what will it get him? Its better to die a great artist than to become a washed up hack and kill what once made you great. The jealousy and hate is about those around him who are telling him to stop before he kills the chance at a normal life and his legacy, though they were write in the end. Now the only way of getting it back is by ending his career, and killing it for good, now he can only reminisce about the old years and the old version of himself. Just how I see it...
I had dated a guy in high school that had a gay cousin. I always thought they had a thing together but I wasn’t sure. He would always act weird. This album is messed up.
Smile like you mean it has the lyric "sunsets on the east side" which are a direct mention to bassist Mark Stoermer and Brandon Flowers growing up on the east side of vegas, which makes me think the song is about missing home and where you grew up, nothing about sexuality

@Ddhfacetyy I've heard conflicting stories on what the song is actually about, I hear from somewhere that the song is supposed to be about a dude who would bully Brandon and then this theory, I kinda don't see either
Hot Fuss may be concept album for the murder of Jenny, but Sam's Town is a concept album about (you guessed it) the residents of a small town
It's just a shimmy and a shake, uh huh

I feel like the video for Mr.Brightside kinda contradicts
Blindcone you’re correct! This was just a fun idea I had, nothing official or confirmed.
@Mitch Ddhfacetyy >Music videos don’t always match up with the song,
You're absolutely right. REM's Losing My Religion is about someone in love and obsessed with someone else and "losing your religion" is a way to say "losing your composure" in the southern US. While the music video implies a whole different thing about faith.
Very few music videos match up with the song - they are usually a video directors take on the song not the musicians.
