0:56 this transition right here blew my mind. The way the hand gestures initially is displayed as a normal mannerism before being recontextualized as it holds the images being transitioned into, which gives a paprika esk feeling of reality wrapping, as the TV in the background is held by the hand in the foreground. It is posed as though you are presenting the explanation physically. I like the subtlety of it. I was not even aware my mind was blown before a good second when I actually held a thought of awe. You are an incredible artist and I wish to reach those heights, which you have shown me someday.
I love their Miracle Musical work. They're from Michigan which is where I live, and I've actually been to Marvin's marvelous mechanical museum a few times. It's definitely an odd place...
Favorite album of all time. You gotta see the video of them playing songs for the dead live where Dave Grohl is beating the drums like a husband from the 50s beat his children meanwhile Mark Lanegan is still as a statue singing through gravel as 1000 bodies mash together in a huge festival. Sick.
Holy shit that was the most polished and well written video I think you've ever released, and I loved every single minute of it. Also, not for nothing, but your music taste kicks ass. Have a great day Funke I've been watching your stuff forever and it's such a pleasure to see how you've pushed yourself and improved over the years.
FUNKe's evolution as a content creator is very impressive, with videos increasingly worked on and with different subjects for each one. The details of the scenarios spread throughout the video is something quite interesting too, maybe he's trying to create a FUNKe lore, I don't know. In short, you did an excellent job. ; )
Surprised that Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral didn’t make an appearance. Themes of self-hatred, desperation, substance abuse, and similar subjects aren’t at all uncommon in music, but the way The Downward Spiral handles that narrative is unparalleled and makes for one of the most sobering musical experiences out there. It’s sequel, The Fragile, is also just as good, and serves as an arguably darker continuation of that narrative. Phenomenal albums, couldn’t recommend more.
My favorite concept album is "SpongeBob SquarePants: The Best Day Ever" by SpongeBob & The Hi-Seas, what a great listen, and the use of radio transitions between songs are just *chef's kiss* mwhaa
ELO - Time has to be my favorite album of all time. Usually I only enjoy certain songs from an album, but time is the only one I'll listen to all the way through for the story.
This is the kind of video that makes me want to get into music. It’s so addictive to hear someone talk on end about some hint they’re clearly passionate about. Also, I can’t help but feel like the “cheesy script jar” bit is kind of a commentary on how it’s okay for songs and lyrics and things in general to be cheesy, based on how your character goes from denying your script is cheesy to being angry at it for being cheesy to purposefully going to admit the script is cheesy. Maybe I’m just looking too much into it.
Ngl, this is one of my favourite videos by you, not just because of the animation, but by how you gave me such a liking to so many different genres of music.
Worthikids’s “Duloc” is sort of a musical following a mute protagonist trying to survive political upheaval in the background of Shrek 1, but every song doesn’t really focus on that specific crisis that they all encompass? Like, it is the plot of the album, but the myriad of different characters singing just do their own things when it happens. Wonderful album about accepting inevitability
Or it might be about how being stuck up your own ass can lead your society to ruin without you noticing, that’s also a reading that pops up from the text now that I reread it
if you like tally hall and concept albums i’d recommend hawaii part ii, the only album from tally hall-adjacent project miracle musical. it’s very abstract but most people agree that there’s an overarching plot connecting the songs, though most interpretations are complicated by the constant allusions to 9/11. also it’s really really good music
It's very likely it's at least in one view, a sailor and other lost souls trapped in a siren song and or a lotus flower situation. Or in another a single person, named Simon (one of the demo's for the mind electric mention it) living though his own thoughts in a fragmented mind. Or really the simplest one, 9/11. though this really can only apply so much to the entire album in my opinion. It itself is a fragment of ideas that converge around each other into a concept itself, and you're going to believe whatever hits you the strongest.
@@Foxlum my personal interpretation is twofold: 1. it’s the thoughts of one of the twin towers as it collapses on 9/11 2. it’s the second part of a trip to hawaii that began in the 90s this is based on what joe hawley has said about the album since its release, but the album is so abstract that loads of interpretations are feasible
Whenever I watch a FUNKe video, I just have to shut off my brain and enjoy the beautiful animation because as soon as I try to think while he's in the middle of a rant, my brain gets fried
This video goes so fucking hard. Absolutely loved the animation, direction and pacing. Honestly can't wait for anything and everything you make. You've blown all my expectations out the water for what a simple RUclips video essay could be, to such a point I feel bad using the word simple. So excited
@Artistic Cat A Concept Album is basically just an Album that tells a story across it, my go to example is American Idiot by Green Day cause the only songs that don't really fit the story are American Idiot and Wake me up when September Ends. Every thing else from that album however forms a cohesive story with a beginning (Jesus of Suburbia), a middle (Literally everything else), and an End (Letterbomb and Homecoming), there's even an epilogue with Whatsername
@Artistic Cat honestly he mentioned some pretty popular bands i believe you're just slightly uncultured and uneducated on the topic therefore should refrain from further commenting
I gotta chuck in a recommendation for The Protomen and their albums "The Protomen" and "Act II: The Father of Death". Both some of the best rock albums I've listened to, with some interesting themes and ideas relating to authoritarianism, industrialisation, and what it means to be a hero. Deltron 3030 is another good one, with all the songs being set in a dystopian scifi future.
Seconding this Protomen recommendation, although it should be noted that Act II is quite a bit different to Act I (and better than act 1, IMO), so if Act I doesn't seem to be your jam (it's not mine bc of the intentionally(?) muddied vocals), I'd still recommend trying out Act II as well.
6:02 question: what’s the whole deal surrounding this moment? I saw noodle (another awesome animator video-essayist) do this a couple months back in his last vid: the extreme vivid close-up with the live action lips and a green screen transition. What’s the deal with it? Also this funke is FUCKING legit, it took me like 3 rewatches to realize every single moving action has a soundtrack accompanying it! GREAT STUFF!!
@@Spiceonthehill Any idea what specific upload/cover of the song this is? The singer/instrumentation sounds different from every version I've been able to find so far, but the specific arrangement used in this and Noodle's cutaway gags really, REALLY entices me, I can't stop thinking about it EDIT: On further inspection, the one from Noodle's video is sourced clearly from the original song but with added distortion, FUNKe's version here is the clearly different one that I'm looking for, and I wanna tear my hair out over trying to find this!
Going from TF2 commentary to literaly 10 minute masterpieces that take more effort than 90% of the 5 hour video "essays" on RUclips. Excellent work and I hope this blows up even bigger than it has. You deserve it.
This is phenomenal, for every second I can tell that a large amount of care went into this from the animation, editing, background music, and FUNKe's voice over too. So thank you for blessing us with this outstanding video and thank you for showing me some new albums to look into.
This video was hilarious and great on its own, but the one scene where Justyn is sleeping and it makes the loose cannon sound just had my sides in orbit. Pretty much everything about this video fits fluidly together, all the jokes are well structured, and this kind of content caters to both old and new viewers alike. FUNKe isn't falling into the syndrome of content getting lazier, his quality only increases with every upload. And to top it all off, he's a Weezer fan. I hope more people realize what they're missing out on and check out this channel, it's just too fucking good.
This is by far, one of your most masterful videos yet. Your form of mixed media is entrancing and your script is witty and smart. Everything is so intricately crafted and I can imagine the countless times you've returned to this video to refine and make sure every frame of the video is worthwhile; so much so that it seemed to pass in seconds rather than 10mins. Great work and I'm glad to support your channel for all these years. My unsolicited criticism has already been addressed by you is the pacing. You're suffering from success in that everything is so well done that everything is battling for my attention. Its a real shame youtube doesn't allow you to share song clips because I think that would have been the best and easy way to give to give the view the time to digest every phrase and visual eye-candy. Maybe a patreon exclusive?
I've thought about making an edit with more center-stage clips of the songs mentioned, i'll give it some genuine thought about rendering out just exclusive for non-youtube uploads.
6:20 THERE IT IS. I was losing my mind because Mandy's Marathon review had this cognitohazard-ass section, and now its here again. Something is afoot. Can't wait to see more of these being found.
This had me laughing several times. The sudden pencil to the heavy. The arm on the jar. The sprawling, verbose, and frankly lovely(and slightly silly) description of the Bardo-like state followed by "maybe I just didn't feel like animating it" into the Jar again. This was Inspiring and I may or may not have spent some time songwriting because of it. I appreciated this look into your experiences and your visual portrayal of these auditory media visually. I tend to be a lurker on RUclips, but you pulled a like outta me. No small feat. *TLDR:* "Good sh!t, dude."
Bruh. I've said it before but I need to say it again. I love what you've got going on here. This is coming from some nobody, but your content blows my dome clean off. The style, the little touches, the humor, the way you still absolutely slam your actual points down in a coherent way. I'm still laughing about the pencil. You started out as a TF2 streamer, and now you've blown up into talking about actually pretty deep concepts, in an incredibly engaging, informative, and entertaining way. I'm so glad I found your page, you've given me food for thought and creativity that very few others have managed to do. God bless, brother, and keep it Funkey 🤙

I think good kid mad city deserved a mention as it is an incredible concept album, it's like the album equivalent of a movie, although I'm glad you mentioned to pimp a butterfly.
To be fair almost every modern rap album is sort of a concept album, otherwise it's thrown as a mix tape. That's what I read somewhere at least. But I agree that gkmc is an excellent example of storytelling.
I... am continuously impressed by the level and variety your creativity encompasses. That musical intro?! These animations!? This script writing? A man without bounds.
I've fallen in love with concept albums ever since my deep dive into prog rock a few years ago. There's too many to name but Magma is one band I always return to. I don't know of anyone but Christian Vander who can jump between singing bass and falsetto in a made up alien language while on the drums. In my opinion one of the most underrated bands and musicians I've every had the pleasure of listening to.
This is amazing! Interesting visuals, music humor, beginning song I wish existed, and talking about concept albums? I couldnt ask for more, this is one of my favorite videos lol
Would Everywhere At The End Of Time count as a series of concept albums because each stage was released one by one, or would it count as just one large concept album because you can buy the full thing on bandcamp now?
As easy as they are to overlook as just pure comedy, I think Neil Ciceriga’s Mouth albums are genuine works of art and some of the best concept albums I’ve ever heard.
The video has tons of really great musical recommendations in it but genuinely I'm pretty enamored with opening piece you played. I saw in another comment that you said you heard it in the dream you described in the video. Your lyrical work is really enjoyable and I'd love to hear something similar on a more grand scale in the future.
The sheer quality and the effort and love you put into your videos shows man, you deserve so many more subs than I could ever send your way. And the fact you brought up feed me jack and a bunch of artists I already loved made my day, not even mentioning all the new ones to listen to!

Favorite album of all time. You gotta see the video of them playing songs for the dead live where Dave Grohl is beating the drums like a husband from the 50s beat his children meanwhile Mark Lanegan is still as a statue singing through gravel as 1000 bodies mash together in a huge festival. Sick.

i love how much better FUNKe is getting, the production quality of all of the videos this past year has been amazing
7:56 dude thank you i haven’t seen an apple in so long
Holy shit that was the most polished and well written video I think you've ever released, and I loved every single minute of it. Also, not for nothing, but your music taste kicks ass. Have a great day Funke I've been watching your stuff forever and it's such a pleasure to see how you've pushed yourself and improved over the years.
One can only wonder how many hours this man puts into literally just the references alone in his videos
FUNKe's evolution as a content creator is very impressive, with videos increasingly worked on and with different subjects for each one. The details of the scenarios spread throughout the video is something quite interesting too, maybe he's trying to create a FUNKe lore, I don't know.
In short, you did an excellent job. ; )
I think it's his best one
Surprised that Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral didn’t make an appearance. Themes of self-hatred, desperation, substance abuse, and similar subjects aren’t at all uncommon in music, but the way The Downward Spiral handles that narrative is unparalleled and makes for one of the most sobering musical experiences out there. It’s sequel, The Fragile, is also just as good, and serves as an arguably darker continuation of that narrative. Phenomenal albums, couldn’t recommend more.
I was looking for a comment like this. A huge opportunity was missed by not mentioning The Downward Spiral.
My favorite concept album is "SpongeBob SquarePants: The Best Day Ever" by SpongeBob & The Hi-Seas, what a great listen, and the use of radio transitions between songs are just *chef's kiss* mwhaa
The fact that you included The Mars Volta, Opeth and Mastodon in one sentence is fucking awesome.

You've condensed 30 mins worth of content into 9 mins, and still somehow made those points easy(ish) to understand. Nothing but respect for you FUNKe
That's a pretty high concept. I don't know, this video isn't doing a lot with those.
This channel is sooo good, the fact that I now know funke is such a big music enjoyer makes me like it even more
Ngl, this is one of my favourite videos by you, not just because of the animation, but by how you gave me such a liking to so many different genres of music.
Or it might be about how being stuck up your own ass can lead your society to ruin without you noticing, that’s also a reading that pops up from the text now that I reread it
A concept album... based on Shrek? Oh I'm listening to that!
if you like tally hall and concept albums i’d recommend hawaii part ii, the only album from tally hall-adjacent project miracle musical. it’s very abstract but most people agree that there’s an overarching plot connecting the songs, though most interpretations are complicated by the constant allusions to 9/11. also it’s really really good music
good news: he already knows about it! he said that yes, there is a concept... whatever it is but it's there
@@cartodelina7715 very cool
It's very likely it's at least in one view, a sailor and other lost souls trapped in a siren song and or a lotus flower situation. Or in another a single person, named Simon (one of the demo's for the mind electric mention it) living though his own thoughts in a fragmented mind. Or really the simplest one, 9/11. though this really can only apply so much to the entire album in my opinion. It itself is a fragment of ideas that converge around each other into a concept itself, and you're going to believe whatever hits you the strongest.
@@Foxlum my personal interpretation is twofold:
1. it’s the thoughts of one of the twin towers as it collapses on 9/11
2. it’s the second part of a trip to hawaii that began in the 90s
this is based on what joe hawley has said about the album since its release, but the album is so abstract that loads of interpretations are feasible
funny, i always associated it with pearl harbor. i guess that's 9/11's grandfather, so it checks out
Loved the little snippets of Tally Hall, they’re my favorite band. Excellent video, your quality just keeps increasing :)

Whenever I watch a FUNKe video, I just have to shut off my brain and enjoy the beautiful animation because as soon as I try to think while he's in the middle of a rant, my brain gets fried
Justyn covering his passions is a lovely sentiment and this video is wonderful.
I agree
This video goes so fucking hard. Absolutely loved the animation, direction and pacing. Honestly can't wait for anything and everything you make. You've blown all my expectations out the water for what a simple RUclips video essay could be, to such a point I feel bad using the word simple. So excited
I watched this all the way through and I’m still no closer to understanding what a concept album is. 10/10, excellent.
@Artistic Cat The video is about concept albums
@Zote from the hit indie platformer, Hollow Knight not really but i just died to zote in pantheon of hallownest
Bro your editing is delicious. Keep pushing & keep creating
Hell yeah I love 3030
What am I fighting forrrrrr

EDIT: On further inspection, the one from Noodle's video is sourced clearly from the original song but with added distortion, FUNKe's version here is the clearly different one that I'm looking for, and I wanna tear my hair out over trying to find this!

My favorite concept album is everywhere at the end of time. I have never felt so distresed, hollow and emotional at a album.
I... am continuously impressed by the level and variety your creativity encompasses.
I love how FUNKE snoring is the charging sound for the sticky bomb launcher
This is amazing! Interesting visuals, music humor, beginning song I wish existed, and talking about concept albums? I couldnt ask for more, this is one of my favorite videos lol
Would Everywhere At The End Of Time count as a series of concept albums because each stage was released one by one, or would it count as just one large concept album because you can buy the full thing on bandcamp now?
It's definitely a series of concept records. It's so much a concept it barely makes sense without it.
That and the fact that it’s meant to be consumed in one sitting. Tbh who knows lol.
