  • In this episode we fit the steels and remove walls. We won't be showing how to do it but will offer some advice and information to think about when you become involved in the fitting of steels.

It's good to see you all back in the thick of it.
When you were narrating, you said the word "bit." It reminded me when I used to visit Simon Engineering in Dudley when no one said goodbye or see you later. They always said "Tarabit ".
You saying the word in a Black Country accent took me back
Great video, that butty looked good 😊

Not forgetting, propping off the floor you have to make sure that the floor itself can take the weight!

Enjoying the channel so this feedback is given with sincerity- theres an old film-making rule; 'show, dont tell' - this video has a boat load of telling... not a lot of showing, which is what I'd love to see :)

Good morning. You may have gathered from the ‘telling’ we didn’t want to do the ‘showing’ because of the nature of what we were doing and not wanting to do a ‘How to’ on steel fitting. Thanks for watching mate and hopefully more showing than telling on the next lot of episodes 👍🏻🪚🔨

Certainly looking more modern too. Can’t wait for part 2!

The steels have to be boarded with fire board as per building regulations. Also before the fire board you need fireproof sound insulation between the joists before the fire board goes up. We are at this stage now. Adds a lot of cost to the build. Better to be safe than sorry. 👍

fully understand why you didn't go into detail re fitting hte steelwork - not a diy activity, leave it to the professionals - us!
Interesting when you pulled the ceiling boards down and revealed all that bodged plumbing!

Rock and roll now guys, much nicer job than that problematic money pit you started last year. Showing what you do best now, and explaining as you go. I reckon that exposed ceiling could do with two rows of bridging whilst you have the opportunity, to brace the tiled floor above, and alleviate those poorly drilled holes in the joists. Excellent stuff, really happy for you guys. Nice job for the new year. Cheers !!

Not only calculations but you need certificates for the steel from the suppliers and if any fabrication has been done on the steel it has to be done by a CE certified company and paperwork supplied.

My house is the same as that, the joists in the middle stick out at least a foot into the other side of the middle wall
Which was great when we had to run a wire along one wall, but impossible on the other side because that's no gap🤦

For an engineer they should always be insured and ideally a registered member of the Institute of Structural Engineers.

  • @baldyslapnut.

Good decision not to show full procedure for steels. Every case needs a check of what's going on above and below. Some rough calculations of what loads are being transferred and from where can be done before SE gets involved. Large trussed purlins are often carried by spine walls in many older houses.
I often leave remains of cast in-situ concrete beams and build off them, like you did here. More harm caused trying to extract them in my experience.👍
Finally please turn the flow rate down on the Stihl, you dont need that much water pissing everywhere, just enough to catch the dust.

Does the building inspector not require that the steels should be given a coat of red oxide for rust protection, all the ones I have fitted it was a requirement.

Why did you put pad stones under the steel and leave the short nib of concrete lintel below. I think you should have taken out the concrete lintel and rebuilt from sound brick. Nice otherwise. John.

40mm/50m waste pipe through the joists, was always taught it's bad pratice...

    • @mrabuilders6723
      @mrabuilders6723  4 месяца назад +4

I’m not a fan of fitting them either they make me twitch. Putting waste pipes in joists isn’t necessarily bad practice it’s how the fitter installs them that’s the issue. There are rules of how much of the joist is cut out and where the hole is drilled. All holes should be drilled in the centre of the joist and no more than a 1/4 of the total depth if I remember right. It shouldn’t be drilled out within 300mm of the end of the joist either again if I remember rightly. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong 😁👍🏻

That’s the proper way to do it the joists on a load bearing wall should be 150ml minimum overhanging (to allow for expansion and contraction) either side of wall, old school builders knew what they were doing 👍🏻
