    The difference between anabeth and clarisse i think is Clarisse would push him down the steps even if the quest didnt require it

    I interpreted Percy being "afraid of himself" more as the other two misunderstanding that he was really afraid of them betraying him since he hadn't shared the second half of the prophecy with anyone until the end of the episode. like how he wanted to turn around after the bus, he was probably thinking someone else could take the mission instead because he might have hoped that the prophecy would go to someone else and he wouldn't have to be scared of his friends betraying him, which Annabeth then read as him being scared of his capabilities to the point he'd want to give up at the first bump in the road. So not that he's actually scared of himself but just and overall misunderstanding! but who knows, maybe he actually is

    Uncle Rick stated his intention to revisit certain parts of the book he wrote almost two decades ago
    The book interpretation of Medusa could be seen as a little racially insensitive, more even nowadays so it makes sense he would want to change it
    I've heard people complaining about what "they" changed, but Rick Riordan the literal author was in the writer's room the whole time, and personally I trust him

      True and honestly I do like that he's the one behind all the changes cause he's the one that knows the books inside and out and it's probably why all the changes we've seen so far haven't had a damaging effect on the characters or the story. I just like being able to spot the changes and trying to figure out how they affected everything cause I've been really impressed with how it's flown pretty smoothly.

      I guess he was able to mix being a Disney Channel show with the books pretty well I imagined it would have been worse. 😅

    Yes so much better pacing. I really do like how they're letting Annabeth cook a little. It feels like they're leaning more into both the child/parent relationship for demigods, and establishing Annabeth's fatal flaw. I do have issues with them not immediately correcting Percy's assumption about the prophecy. In the books they're right on 'interpreting prophecy is dangerous and you shouldn't try', but they don't here. I hope they don't use it as an 11th hour way for the kids to start doubting each other again.
    This is a pretty good take on a more family friendly Medusa myth (with an 'if you know you know' vibe). It's also kind of inspired the way they handled the fight, smart use of tools from the characters, low budget, and completely family friendly but, at the same time, doesn't feel contrived. I do like them calling out Athena on some awful behavior. I'm not so hot on Poseidon not getting as called out (but I think they might be handling that with Percy's much more antagonistic feelings toward dad.) Also calling out Poseidon opens a whole can of worms about Zeus, so I can see why they aren't going there.

      I only wish they didn't know it was Medusa right away, it just doesn't seem logical for them to go if they knew it was here. Yes his mom thought she was misunderstood but his mom was wrong. Medusa through Greek mythology has turned so many to stone, she's a monster she kills, she's full of hate and revenge. I also don't like how Ms Dodds is now the monster that got Thalia it just isn't a good change either for me. And I don't like how they took away from grovers character so many times now. He's snitched, done nothing to help hardly, he didn't sob to Percy about failing for Percy to cheer him up, he didn't even get his fight in with Medusa. He should've been flying around smacking Medusa with a log.

      The pacing should only improve from here since we're basically halfway through the book with only three episodes so it's good to see it already improving when they're cover fewer chapters, loving the set-up with Annabeth's development and how she now has this fixation that her Mother is perfect, while Percy knows that his Dad is isn't that great, it's a good way for them to learn something from each other while retaining Annabeth as a character with all the answers. Hopefully when they start revealing the larger prophecy they'll go more into the whole interpretation thing but if they do make the kids doubt each other at the end I'll be so annoyed, the start of this show needs a golden trio with a relationship audiences can get behind, having them get the doubting over with earlier is the best option and it'd be so stupid to bring it back near the end.
      Really like how they did Medusa's fight, of course, I still think the book's version was better but it's really impressive how much they were able to carry forward and the techniques they used were so creative. quick thing, I'm hoping this show will mature with its audience as not seeing the beheading of Medusa was fine when the characters were 12 but as they grow up I'm hoping to see some more brutality, makes me wonder how they'll do the final season basically as they're fine with showing monsters turns to dust but how will they deal with what happens to Luke? With Poseidon, Percy is definitely the representation of what he does wrong, Athena represents the wrongdoing of the Gods when they actually do something whereas Poseidon represents what happens when they do nothing, hopefully, they'll deal with this less subtly as the series goes on as the parallel would be another great way to bond Percy and Annabeth.

      @@hyrulianhero116 1) They were about to turn around when they arrived to the conclusion that they're in medusa's lair. You know what's more illogical? A child of Athena being dumb enough to not suspect something is off and willingly entering medusa's lair without even suspecting what the "Auntie Em" stands for. I always thought that part is too out of character for Annabeth. Plus them getting lured in the books over and over (medusa lair, lotus hotel, crusty's) always realizing too late that they walked in on a trap gets redundant specially when it is to be translated into a show.
      2) Actually they did not change medusa's story from the books. This is the same version Rick used to explain medusa's past. What they did is add more context for the viewers why she became the way she did. It adds flavor to the story telling and make the viewers want to symphatize with her if only for awhile before she reveals her true color. The show did not say she's not evil but that she was a victim and her monstrosity is a result of what they did to her (atleast in the version they used). Again this is a good way to add nuance on why Percy see how much of an asshole the gods are. She was killed anyway and it was still revealed that she turned many many innocent lives to stone which was hidden under her basement.
      3) When was the last time you read the book? In the book it says they were being chased by all three of the furies and an army of hellhounds when they arrived at camp. You may be remembering about the cyclops but that was when they are still out in the cities, not when they are almost to the camp where Thalia was changed into a tree.
      4) The changes with Grover is the one I can kind of get behind you but then again we are only 3 episodes in so I believe they are still going to tackle about his searcher's liscene and him feeling incompetent as a protector. I understand why they opted to develop his relationship with Luke first rather than Annabeth and Grover because they had to make the betrayal scene believable at the end. But now that they are in the quest, they will have more time to develop their bond and learn about their vulnerabilities. Him snitching on Percy at the early episodes was just as bad as him gaslighting Percy for a whole semester. They did not change much of his personality excpet for the absence of his back story which as I've said, something that they can still show in the next episodes.

    The first 3 episodes are literally half the book. Presumably they made it fast paced at the start so they can take their time on the actual quest. As you say, there are changes, but so far it's all been to improve the character moments.
    There are different versions of the myths. Originally, Medusa and her sisters were monsters, daughters of Phorcys and Keto. Medusa being a priestess who was cursed by Minerva (Athena) was a Roman invention, and the not-so-family-friendly part seems to be a modern interpretation.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад

      Really hoping the pacing gets solved from this point as we still have another five episodes to deal with the same amount of stuff they covered in three.
      The Roman and Greek myth connection thing always confused me and I know they actually use the Gorgon sisters later on so it does make me wonder why they wanted to make Medusa more tragic instead since there going to make her sisters actual monsters.

    The only thing I dislike is they removed the suspense of them figuring out they are in Medusa place. Also the fight scenes just seem so quick and easy its not like in the books that you feel worried or tense about them getting to fights no sense of real danger. Hopefully that changes but overall was a good episode.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад +1

      I do wish they had built up the tension more, but I just think it's a tricky sequence to right, on one hand, Annabeth should be smart enough to figure it out but then why on Earth would they go in with full knowledge of an extremely dangerous monster inside. Hopefully, the next episode with Echidna will build it better as from the small tease at the end she's on the train which is earlier than the books giving her a lot more time to appear as a fully evil monster.

    I happen to disagree with you about the pacing since it feels like they're only doing a chapter or two per episode. Sooo.... it doesn't feel rushed to me. My best friend who's read the books too and I turned this episode into a watchparty!!! This is STILL everything we both wanted!!!! I'm also glad we're not the only ones who didn't judge the show for hiring Leah as Annabeth and Aryan as Grover... I went into this show assuming that Rick Riordon must know something we don't yet because he and his wife did the hiring this time around!!! Sooooo.... with that in mind I went into this show with an open mind and I happen to think Rick did AMAZING job casting all the characters we're all so passionate about!!! I'm glad my bestie and I aren't the only ones who liked the actress who plays Medusa!!!! I'm suprised you didn't realize that the pegasus they showed looked like Black Jack!!!!!

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад

      Well... both episodes 1 & 2 covered up to chapter 8 then episode 3 covered the next 3 chapters which brings us to 11 chapters out of 22 in the first 3 episodes, happy though that it didn't feel rushed to you and in all honesty the pacing doesn't bother me that much since the way they've done it means they can stretch out the remaining chapters over 5 whole episodes. Love the casting now, at first I do have to say I was taken aback by it but after seeing the cast behind the scenes and seeing their performances, it really brought me around and now when re-reading the books I've started to picture these three in my head 😂 I noticed Blackjack in the first ep but kinda assumed this black Pegasus would be just another random one since Percy didn't really feel any connection to it but I would absolutely love it if that was actually Blackjack and he's just gonna pop up through the story, it's the kind of thing I'm hoping they'll do when we get to the Lotus Hotel as I just want to see Nico and Bianca in the background.

    Hello I don't want to sound rude or nasty but do you have a speech impediment? I have a lot of language issues including dyslexia and I am training to be a speech pathologist and was just curious. Percy Jackson is actually the book serious that helped me learn how to read at 12 so it means a lot to me as well.
    I also love seeing how a book reader that remember/is reading along to match what is going on in the show.

      Thanks for the comment, didn't come off as rude at all 😁 Honestly I don't know if I have a speech impediment or not, never been tested, what might explain it is that I am from the West Midlands in England and we don't exactly have the typical British accent, most people compare it to Farmer talk, plus I watched a lot of America TV growing up so I don't exactly sound like most people from here, hope this helped 😁
      I love how everyone has such meaningful connections to these books! I read them a lot in school and they helped me get through being bullied.
      Glad that you're enjoying my commentary 😁 😁

      @@benspiller you have a w/r glide and some other interesting speech sounds that don't sound accental but may be. It does not sound American at all since your r's are w's. It is an interesting accent if it isn't a speech thingy.
      These books thankfully didn't need to get me through bullying (I didn't understand when I was being bullied due to the language issues) but they did help me academically to reach my full potential.
      I am looking forward to hearing more about what you think for later episodes

      Same, when I first read it it seemed cool but when you get to understand Hades and his family more, you really don't want to imagine any of them being related to some of the worst people in all history, having the quest effect the world seems much better cause now that sort of blames WWII on a failed quest so basically it's a monsters fault.

    As a fan of the book I hate what they did with Medusa and auntie M's. I'm pretty disappointed in the series in general. There's been so many changes and the script sounds like a script coming from the actors. Not to mention the rushed plots constantly. Was definitely hoping for better :/

      I can understand being frustrated with the changes, so far they haven't changed anything I couldn't look past. I do kind of wish Auntie Em's was a bit more evil though cause the woman literally kept all her victims on display on her front lawn but having her relate to Annabeth and Percy's Mom helps to highlight some flaws in Annabeth and point out how the Gods do bad things when they are actual doing something and when they are negligent.
