    I really like how the villains do psychological intimidation and engage intellectually in addition to just being scary. Like the idea of a creeper on the train really weirds us all out, so it's even scarier when the creeper is also out to get you 😱. Plus you get the sense that your'e in the presence of mega-intelligent beings who've probably been around for millennia. The way Echidna manipulated the entire situation to perfection was fitting, the way she only cared about training her monster was fitting, and she gave off evil while being completely calm and not doing cheesy evil laughs or anything. Pretty dang cool.

      I know!! The villains have been phenomenal so far and I love how much depth has been added to all of them!!! Echidna was just done so well, every thing about her was she knew she caused pain but she enjoyed it!! A line that really stuck with me in tlf is when percy talks about father for the first time. He said in the book his mother said he was lost at sea, not dead, just lost at sea. It definitely was a small moment but it stuck with me a lot as someone who lost their father very young, that small but incredibly important distinction helped percy come to terms with the greek side of him.

      So sorry to hear about that, though happy to hear how it connects you with the story 😁 Always liked that Percy thought his dad was lost at sea and it's kind of a shame he's just become an absentee Father in the show.

    "I don't think you wanna take that tone with me, little girl" is such a chilling line, when you take into consideration that Annabeth is black, and noone is talking about it. Also, quite ironically, Echidna wasn't the mother of any of the monsters they've encountered until now (well, actually, she was mother of the Gorgons according to one version of the myth about Medusa, but that's it).

    Love your reactions. You're one of the few book readers I'm still watching because some of the book purist can be a bit irrational and only want the show to be a direct page by page translation to show which is impossible to do. You're so right about everything and I can't wait to see the pay off at at the end when Luke finally reveals his true colors and motivation.

    Never has there been a more nonsensically completely reasonable sentence than "You are dying. You need to fall." Relentless!
    I loved the episode by the way, so much visual artistry. And of course Suzanne Cryer's star villainy.
    Oh, and I think Annabeth's dad did love her in the book... but he doesn't really pay a lot of attention to her from the scenes we got with him, pretty sure he had to be reminded at one point in book 3 that she was in danger. His daughter's unfortunately second to his work and general nerdiness for history, so I'd guess step-mom ended up having to be mostly responsible for Annabeth's upbringing when she joined the family, which was probably just an unfortunate stressful situation for everyone involved. That's just how I see it though.

      Yeah this episode might be my favourite so far, loved the shot of Percy falling from the arc and just all the visuals this one gave us, especially with the Centaurs. And Suzanne Cryer was AMAZING! So hoping she comes back to team up with her husband Typhon.
      Ah so with Annabeth's dad, it's more of a neglectful relationship rather than a hateful one, I always thought he just didn't want her from the start and saw her as a burden but it's nice to know he loved her but put his work first, and loved your point with the Step-Mum, always viewed her as evil cause I guess that's how Annabeth might have seen her but really she's probably horrified to the world she got brought into and having her children as well be exposed to the dangers Annabeth brings with her.

      @nicolaashamman6201 6 месяцев назад +1

      @benspiller Oh yeah, Annabeth definitely painted her step-mum as a villain, but when Percy met her I think he thought "she seems alright". But I remember it felt off then when she showed up in a flashback in Mark of Athena and was really harsh on Annabeth for being afraid of spiders. She definitely wasn't a helpful loving parent to her, probably just didn't have a clue how to raise her and her own kids all at the same time.

      Typhon always seemed slept on to me, he was used to basically distract and draw the Gods away from Olympus, all of which are crazy powerful and needed a whole load of them to stop him, yet he just doesn't feel as up there in villainy as Kronos or Gaia, it's probably because he was just being used by Kronos but I just think there's a lot of potential in his character and this show could do some great things with both him and Echidna working for Kronos.

    You're so right!! I loved Equidna, and I hope they bring her back later in the series, she's such an interesting and powerful monster, she should be leading her children to battle against the gods. But also, Zeus's the one who sent her. So I'm not sure, how does he have control over her? Maybe it was just like, "Hey, Equidna, long time no see! Do you want to kill some demigods for me?" "Kill demigods? You know what? I do need to teach my baby Chimera to hunt. I'm in.", like a mutual favor and not like he really has any control over her.

    • @benspiller

      I'm so hoping they do this 😂, I can already picture a scene with Typhon fighting the Olympians in the background with Echidna maybe riding the Chimera into battle with a bunch of monsters surrounding her! I think she listened to Zeus because she had too, like when Kronos shows up the Monsters, Gods and Titans are forced to take sides so I think it'd be a pretty natural decision for Echidna to side with Kronos if he promises a better existence for her children.

    • @vultar9999
      @vultar9999 6 месяцев назад +1

      Nope, Chimera has a snake's tail, you might be thinking manticore as they do have a scorpion's tail, however. In myth, the Chimera's tail is just a snake with the head as the tail tip. In the show, they've changed it to a lizard tail, which works, but I'm not sold on the 'stinger' since, visually, the tail doesn't feel like it would have a one.

      @@vultar9999 the Greek chimera also has multiple heads (3 if you count the snake) which this didn't... I assumed they were blending it with a manticore as that clearly attacked like a scorpion and not a snake or dragon depending on which Greek source you're looking at.

      @@matte5705I think it’s also partially implied that there might be more than one chimera. Echidna also mentions that this one is young, so she might not be full-grown yet?
      The two/three-headed-ness is also not a universal trait; in the Iliad, Homer says that she has front part of a lion, the back part of a serpent, and the middle part is a goat - no extra heads mentioned. So depending on which description they go with, the multiple heads are not absolutely necessary.
      I think it’s also likely that they chose not to go the multi-headed route with the Chimera since we’re getting Cerberus, also a multi-headed monster, later this season!

    Overall I like this episode better than the first 2, but it's a step back from 3 for me.
    The thing about Annabeth's dad in the books is that we don't really know what he thinks. The relationship is definitely strained, but Annabeth's not a reliable narrator here. She's got a lot of hurt towards her dad and stepmom, but we don't know how much of that is reality and how much is her interpretation of her mortal family dealing with the realities of demigods. I can also see her dad saying no thanks to Athena, just because of family history, but it doesn't mean he doesn't love her. He's definitely a loving parent later.
    Personally I think there's too much dialogue for Echidna here. She's just repeating stuff over and over again. The chihuahua is a nice nod to the books, but really makes no sense in the show. It's just sort of there. I feel if the Chimera hadn't been in the pet carrier all the time it would have worked better, but it seems like the show wants it so demigods don't get tricked by the mist, which they definitely do. It feels awkward.
    Really don't like the arch being a shrine to Athena. Athena is not a goddess of architecture, and by doing this they've stolen Annabeth's special thing. She is described as loving this so much that she invests so much effort into it that Percy tends to forgets she's just as ADHD and dyslexic as the average demigod. They're taking a personality moment (which Annabeth needs) and converting it to a 'parent conflict' moment again. I agree they need to give us some of those for later reasons, but it feels like they're overcorrecting and everybody should be on team Luke now.
    The problem with the arch and Poseidon part is that Poseidon isn't going to going to let Percy die here because he needs him, so it feels, to me, a lot less like 'I care' and more like 'I need you alive'. In the book Percy chooses to let go and trust his father. The arch isn't over water so that makes a problem, but I'm not sure the solution they chose works, because accidently losing your grip and falling doesn't indicate any feeling at all. Maybe if Poseidon spoke to Percy telling him to let go or telling him to jump?
    Hades is the best dad in the books by far. Heck, he's best god in the books. I'm hoping we see Nico and Bianca in the casino.

    • @kooyanessa
      @kooyanessa 6 месяцев назад +2

      I don't think we should be expecting Nico and Bianca in the lotus casino. I can't imagine they will already cast them when they then won't appear until season 3 and they aren't supposed to age before then. Maybe there will be a small reference with their names or something, but I can't imagine they'll do much more than that.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад +2

      Ah, I think I've been drawn in by Annabeth's description of her family life too much 😂😂 Still re-reading the first book so some things are a little foggy but at least this episode sets up their relationship and we'll get to see if Annabeth is being emotional or not.
      I actually really loved Echinda's dialogue in this, she takes that Evil spin on Mothering with the Chimera learning to hunt and talking to the kids like a Mother would, for a centuries-old monster that's defined as being a Mother I thought that was very fitting. I get your point about the pet carrier, it might have been better to have the Chihuahua out of it for more than one scene to make it feel less than a nod, hopefully they'll use these two again though.
      I think the reason they changed the Arch was to try and keep the tone consistent with bringing in Echidna early when there was no threat on the train in the book, they were free to wander around the city and indulge in personal stuff. Here it seems way more unnatural than being attacked and finding safety. I do agree though that I wish the Architecture stuff was more personal to Annabeth, she already has the Spider thing linking her to her Mother so it definitely felt unnecessary, hopefully though it will get built on and maybe as she realises that her Mother doesn't actually care about her as much as she thinks, she might distance herself from it but go back to it after realising she loves it for her own reasons.
      True the Arch scene is going to be hard to interpret, the trust he has in his Father definitely isn't there yet though I do like the visual metaphor of Poseidon reaching out and catching him as he's falling, hopefully that can be built on as a sort of trust fall thing.
      Also hoping to see Nico and Bianca in the hotel, I think all three of the other forbidden children could show up in this season with Thalia being in one of Percy's dreams but I have no idea how the casting would work with it being so early on.
