  • Medusa and the team building exercise. Episode 3 was quite a rollercoaster with some unexpected intensity. I could have assumed that Medusa was always a tragic character, but to hear it so well spoken is another thing entirely! I hope you enjoy this reaction to Episode 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians!

    As others have said, Medusa's backstory was expanded a little bit for the show. However, those kinds of existential questions are fairly common in the Percy Jackson world. The author Rick Riordan has this really amazing gift of making the mythology seem really silly at times while modernizing the concepts. It makes it accessible for younger kids, but retains all of the real world emotions, problems, questions, and situations that make it relatable. There's a lot of focus on the morality and ethics of the gods themselves. It's one of the things I love most about this universe. The gods definitely aren't perfect.

      I absolutely love the rich texture it provides the storytelling. So much more nuance, and it makes me think back to my younger days watching Kevin Sorbo's Hercules, and how fun and often petty the gods were (especially that Ares!)

      This means so much to me to hear this! I'm amazed at how you were so able to articulate my goals with my reactions so clearly. My intention is to always be genuine with my reactions, and I find that comes from a place of gratitude and humility.
      This is a story that so many have tried to get me to start. For one reason or another, I just never made time for it (which I'll explain better in a scripted review for season 1). So while I've never read or seen Percy Jackson, I've understood its glory (kleos).
      Starting this story and immediately being pulled in from the opening moments with a promise of adventure, I felt like Percy standing before the statues of the Greek gods. There is a reverence at play, an incredible story and journey lay before me.
      You are seeing the wish fulfillment of so many in my life (former students) and also watching me exchange the cloak of stubbornness for one of gratefulness.
      I'm grateful in my life that 2023 has sparked so many new and wonderful adventures for me. So grateful that 2024 will likely be even bigger than the last, and humble enough to know that all good things that happen on this channel are the result of the wonderful communities coming together to support me on these journeys.

    The entire Medusa exchange is actually not book accurate
    I don't remember if you heard, but the author of the original books had a huge part in the show (Rick Riordan)
    He was open to changing some things, not being word for word from the book
    The original book, they took a bit longer to figure out it was Medusa, and she was a lot more inherently bad, the show actually did a really cool job of making her seem like a tragic character
    The actually Medusa story is really sad too, TLDR: Medusa was faithful to Athena in every way possible, one day, Posiedon came into Athena's temple and there was a man and woman thing that happened, I think you can imagine what
    Athena was disgusted, and as punishment, punished her, like she said
    Tbh, this is a really cool change, it fits very well with the early scene of little percy and his mom at the museum
    I'm curious to see if they change anything else with this idea in mind.

    The author Rick made a pretty big change in the Medusa scene from books as it was told that Athena was just mad that they were hooking up in her temple but in the show here it’s seen as Poseidon being almost worse than Athena in making Medusa seem so special just to throw her aside when Athena gets mad to save his skin making her really similar to Percy’s mom which I thought was a very solid change👍🏻👍🏻

    Regarding the monsters and their "deaths": when their physical forms are killed, they go to Tartarus (deepest pit in the Underworld), and are reformed at a later time. There is no science to how long it takes for them to show back up. Could be days, weeks, years, even a century.
    It's quite a neat way to explain how these famous monsters who have previously been defeated in various myths are alive and kicking in Percy's time.

    With the story of Medusa media has made her the villain but she never was she was a victim of Poseidon who SA her in Athena's temple and was punished for Poseidon's actions. And she was killed by Perseus Medusa is a tragic figure in Greek mythology

    • @bookswithike3256
      @bookswithike3256 7 месяцев назад +13

      I mean it depends on which version of the myth you're following. In the original she was born a monster, then the next version was the Poseidon story but it was consensual, then it was the SA version. I believe the original was Ovid, the second one was Hesiod and I don't remember who the third was. But this adaptation does a good job of blending the Hesiod version and the SA version. So consensual interaction, but Poseidon was manipulating her.

      Well that actually depends on the verison of the story. Many ahve been told. The main two are she was a victim of SA in Athena's temple and Athena granted her power to never be messed with again, or she just had sex with Poseiden in Athena's temple and Athena cursed her. This version in the show blends both, it seems

    I don’t really consider this a spoiler but just something to note. All demigod hero’s have a fatal flaw and Percy’s is really interesting and is shown very clearly in this episode with his immediate rejection of Medusa’s offer to betray Grover and Annabeth. Percy’s fatal flaw as a hero is personal loyalty Percy is loyal to a fault he quite literally doesn’t understand why someone would betray someone else which makes the prophecy that a friend will betray him all that more heartbreaking because Percy will simply just not understand why :(

    • @Noxiddar

      I know I said in the reaction that I love how even though the setting is contemporary, this adheres to a very classic form of storytelling (oddly enough so did the Live Action One Piece - which I also loved!). I love complex characters, and I especially love complex characters that appear simple on the surface, where the complexity is buried between layers of nuance.
      I often find the hallmark of a good story and, conversely, a good storyteller is the ability to tell a story as is, but carefully laid out to further elaborate on the story by what WASN'T written or said. I often find that it is these places where a story creates its roots in the hearts and minds of an audience, and that human connection flourishes.
      From 3 episodes in, I can sense there is a story where I'm not being told, but it is on full display for the observant audience member, such as yourself pointing out Percy's quick departure before even hearing the entire deal Medusa was making!
      Thank you for your insight and helping to enrich this already enrichening experience!
      Have a great 2024!

    I love your reactions to this! It's refreshing to see and hear from someone that doesn't have any background on the books. It's fun to see you getting immersed in the story.
    As for Medusa, they changed it a bit, even her backstory (which actually helped). Also, in the books, they originally didn't know who owns the emporium and it took them a while to figure it out, nearly getting turned into stones. But Rick Riordan said (Threads) that given the format, it would make sense for them, especially Annabeth, to immediately figure out where they are and who they're dealing with given the setting and the very obvious clues. Couldn't delay the reveal unlike in the books.
    They've done a bit of changes in the story even in previous episodes, but I think it definitely helps that Rick is directly involved because the changes they made actually work in the story

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  7 месяцев назад +4

      It's amazing to read how directly involved the author is, and to see the parallels of how the One Piece Live Action had a similar level of direct influence by the original creator. It makes for much more cohesive storytelling than a bunch of writers sitting around adapting something and putting things in and taking things out by a committee vote. Too many cooks in the kitchen is my guess.
      But there is a definite FLOW that just helps scenes come together and feel complete. And that's definitely a kind of vibe that has that direct storyteller channeling the story. It feels "handcrafted" instead of "produced". Percy Jackson and the Olympians feels a lot like the former. It makes for great storytelling.
      I cannot wait to see where the adventure takes us next! I'm glad you are having fun with the reactions too as much as I am!

      I really appreciate the support. I think it's just amateur jitters, you know? I spent an entire 6+ years on RUclips doing gameplay let's plays with no facecam, so it's always nerve-racking to be front and center. I also hadn't edited any of the videos at the time of this recording, and so in my mind, it's still fairly fresh how my first reaction to One Piece went over. I believe the most used comment I received was: "You talk too much", and "stop pausing". Haha.
      In the end I just settled with that philosophy of Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec when he says: "I have no idea what I'm doing, but I know I'm doing it really well."
      I never want to force a behavior that I have to wear like a mask. Ultimately, I'd rather display a behavior that is an authentic representation of myself. I may be veering this topic off course a little (I've been drinking. It's New Years EVE!), but even just seeing advice from others always makes me feel good to know others care and are investing in my own personal growth as a creator. Thank you so much for that!

      I think what you've said has been one of the biggest and most refreshing surprises to me about this story. There is a rich tapestry of human emotion, nuanced character development, and the psychological nature of divinity that I never would have expected from a YA story about children on a road trip in a world that crosses reality with Greek Mythology.
      Percy Jackson is so much more. And in so many ways, I'm so thankful for that, and it's what I look forward to most in the next episode, waiting to find a way to express that appreciation for being creatively fed something so unique and special.

    Happy New Year! ✨
    Like others have said, the Medusa in the show has more depth than the Medusa in the book. My personal take on her story based on what we see in this episode is that she was initially wronged - definitely by Athena and potentially by Poseidon as well. And then over time she became the monster to match the way Athena made her look. Her basement is full of what seem like innocent victims (unlike the front yard where she showcases the monsters she has turned to stone, acts of potential self-defense). There's Uncle Ferdinand, for example. Satyrs are peaceful, nature-loving creatures and he couldn't have posed a threat to Medusa. I find this kind of victim to victimizer story really sad.
    Speaking of satyrs, since you were wondering if Grover is good at his job or not. You can answer that question yourself over the course of the show but I will give you some info from the books: one of the powers satyrs have is empathy - they are very good at sensing other people's feelings. They haven't mentioned this in the show but we can definitely see it with Grover trying to forge peace in this episode.

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  7 месяцев назад +1

      This is really good insight! I didn't consider the passage from stone monsters outside to the innocent victims inside, tucked away in the dark as following the plot line of victim to victimizer. Well said!
      I do suppose my question about Grover is more rhetorical. And I do see what you mean about empathy. I haven't mentioned it, but I really like his delivery on his lines.
      I actually watch this show twice. The first time is what you see. My awkward stumbling self taking in as much as I can while hoping to add something to the conversation. Haha. The second time is usually a few days later with my family where I can sit back and passively take it all in without competing for air space to talk. I think it's in the second viewing where I really notice just how amazing Grover's actor is. There is a subtlety and nuance in his performance that seems pretty advanced for as young of an actor that he is.
      Amazing show so far, I'm certainly looking forward to what comes next!

      @@Noxiddar Watching twice is good for taking it all in!! I feel like watching various reaction videos is sort of like my "second watch". I would be pretty intimidated to do reactions myself because of feeling awkward and potentially confused during the first viewing. So kudos to you for putting yourself out there like that! making a second comment to not over-clogg the first, it was already long
    The reaction stuff at the end is all fair, I am enjoying your perspective so far, I'm no expert at this stuff either, but like you did for the one monologue, just pause it for a minute to share your thoughts.
    I gotta ask, based on your last 2, you like Walker as the main actor, and I genuinely cracked about 7 times on my first watch of this one. His jokes are a lot of quick jab humor, but still funny (honestly it's just my kind of humor). Seeing how much you liked that?
    Also the scene with Medusa turning and Percy is just GONE gives me chills, the music gives really cool vibes there.

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  7 месяцев назад +2

      I agree. Although it's not just Percy, I thoroughly enjoy Grover's awkwardness. I don't feel like we've seen enough from Annabeth. She's this intriguing character, but the show seems determined to use her as a blunt instrument to baseball bat Percy to the next story beat.
      The part where she speaks with the fury was really interesting, but her performance kind of took me out of it. That's probably why I ended up talking over portions of it. I'm a stage actor (theatre) and a teacher, so I get accustomed to hearing what reading aloud and reading lines especially sounds like. Maybe it's part of the audio mix, but instead of a demigod incognito, I heard an actor in a sound booth.
      Other than that, the show has been really well done! I don't make a habit of nitpicking because I'd rather point out what I enjoy. I think most people coming for reactions feel the same.
      The nice thing about talking over anything that might be important is I actually watch the show twice. The first time is the reaction I'm sharing with the internet, and then a day or two later I sit back and watch it with my family.
      And I'm always catching Grover's little quips and facial acting the second time around. He is invested IN IT. It's so fun to watch!

    • @Timister0902
      @Timister0902 7 месяцев назад +4

      @@Noxiddar I think that's fair, as a viewer perspective, constant nitpicks get old quick. Fair criticisms are good when applicable,
      I enjoy the other cast members too, they live up to their identities pretty well, I've watched a couple interviews in my down time and most of them are pretty positive about everyone, the show deserves time to buid
      I hope we get to see a few more of those annabeth/fury style interactions, they add some really fun exposition and character.
      Being theater you may like this- I heard a quote once, "a trick to making a character feel powerful is to make other clearly capable people talk highly of them," though we haven't seen too much out of her yet, both Luke and the Fury have done this, really convincing the reader "she means business"
      One last observation, the book is written entirely as a Percy POV, so any scene that involves not him is likely new and not from the book.

    even if this is not book acurate in the word for word way. it is acurate about what the whole saga want us to think. "are gods the good ones? are the monsters the bad?" even if medusa is in the book just bad in the whole saga theres other monsters with a comlex story like this

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  7 месяцев назад

      I feel like that's likely been an ongoing question for thousands of years, but in our contemporary world, it feels more pertinent than ever. "are the gods the good ones? are the monsters the bad?"
      I'll likely cover this in a review, but something that has been rolling around in my head since starting doing reactions, is how I've been so wrong in my judgment of things. Dismissing things I thoroughly enjoy, but years before passing on them, not deeming them worth my time.
      I think it's because of my former stubbornness that I approach all of the reactions I do with appreciation and gratitude. Because every show so far has hit me over the head with that very same lesson: "things aren't always what they seem. Snap judgments are hardly ever fair and/or accurate."
      I'm learning that lesson. Glad to see it is a major theme of this series!
