Sorry about the Bell's Palsy and I hope you're feeling alright! I first heard of it 20 years ago when a player on my favorite NBA team suffered from it, it doesn't seem fun at all.
Re: the UploadVR showcase and how meager the trailers were, I agree of course. With Meta blowing so much money on VR, I wish they'd understand how bad the trailers made for Quest games look and throw money into some super high quality visual showcases for PCVR just so they can show them off to non-VR folks. It wouldn't be games that make money since PCVR is so small, but it'd be a showcase for what is possible in modern VR. You guys are right, all of the PCVR games from back in ~2016 look incredible compared to anything made for the Quest in 2024, and it just looks bad to non-VR peoples.
Or like that trailer for Hitman 3 VR coming to the Quest, it's practically a punchline the way the trailer ends with crappy cell shaded footage of the Quest game (running at a low frame rate to boot). All of this stuff is bad PR and just makes VR look silly and dated. Meta should be making their own versions of Half Life Alyx to really wow people, and they should just consider it a part of their overall marketing budget. Blow people away visually, get great reviews, win some awards, and earn some VR converts.
Like imagine if they just aimed for something with a 2080ti as the recommended spec, with all of the standard modern VR mechanics we've become accustomed to (stuff that devs hadn't figured out in 2016), it could be something really impressive.
Lastly, re: ConVRgence, it IS similar in tone to Into the Radius and Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but that's just cuz Into the Radius is based on the same book that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is based on, and the guys who made Metro were former devs for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., so it's just a little mini genre all building off the same core general ideas and concepts. And all of these games were sprung from the classic Russian sci-fi story "Roadside Picnic", which was adapted into a movie named "Stalker" in 1979 (it's also a classic, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, the "Russian Stanley Kubrick").
So 25+ years after the Stalker movie, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game series comes out and blends the concepts of Roadside Picnic/Stalker with the Chernobyl disaster, and this mini genre of video games is born.
Personally, I love S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Into the Radius a lot, so I'm a sucker for this sort of thing. I bought ConVRgence, but it's very early access-y and it's worth waiting for the lone dev to keep working on it before snagging it (particularly if you're not inherently interested in this genre to begin with).
The fact the Metro studio sent a cease a desist for Paradox of Hope is so stupid to me, since it's not like any of these companies own the rights to this mini genre. I understand the dev not wanting to fight it, though.
Sorry to write so much, take care!

I wasn't aware that Metro was made by ex-Stalker developers. Metro was always the more interesting looking franchise to me - maybe I'll try and revisit it at some point.
I hope that behind the scenes Meta are at least putting some serious money into Quest titles (probably the best we can hope for given they don't care about the PC gaming market). While it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, Asgard's Wrath 2 showed what can be done by an experienced team with funding behind them.

Thanks for the episode! Feel better soon Lee! Not sure if you have ever played Devour (on Steam) but if not you should play together. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that experience!

Yeah, my B&S review from when it came out was negative bc it was just waves of enemies, but I decided to change it to positive once they added the campaign. I called it a "mild recommend." The easy combat and janky physics are my main issues.

I had it a few years before COVID btw... I thought it was a stroke to wake up with face half frozen like that so I rushed to hospital. Worst was trying to speak and half frozen cheek blowing full of air...
