G'day Maaaaaaates! From what i can tell the ResMed S9 uses the same foam as the AirSenes 10 and AirSense 11 machines. This is a polyether polyurethane foam material that ResMed selected based on studies that show it’s more resistant to water than alternative materials, and therefore is more durable in moist environments. One series of ResMed ventilators (Stellar) uses a silicone-based foam that has been tested, verified, and validated for safe and effective use using rigorous ResMed quality system protocols.
From my research i believe ResMed machines are much safer than Philips however you still need to avoid using Ozone cleaning devices as evidence does suggest that ozone can also degrade ResMed foam as well.
That being said, have a look inside this ResMed S9 turbine! It's is completely coated in dust and debris and looks very unhygienic to say the least.
I have been saying for a long time now that dust is the NO.1 killer of CPAP Machines and this is exactly what i'm talking about.
I think ResMed needs to come up with a better air filtration system or enable customers to purchase replacement components.
A big thanks to Emma on our private facebook group for sending me through her old ResMed S9 Autoset! Much appreciated :-)
    Lots of love

Get well soon Nicko! My S9 Auto has 24,000 hours on it and keeps going like the Energizer Bunny. 🐰 I can only imagine what the turbine must look like. It has become quite loud over the years. I live in an area where wild fires are common and air quality takes a dive during the fire season.

If there is so much dust getting past the filters, I wonder if it is getting in through poor seals to the case, preventing the air from being drawn through them. A good test of the foam filters is warm water bath. If they’re squeezed no doubt they probably will be loaded with contamination. If there’s minimal dust etc, I’d be asking where the input air to the turbine is coming from. Great video mate!

Luckily it still works with the horrible worrying noise included. I believe it's time to replace being the average usage life for a cpap is 3-5 years. Good video and thanks for sharing.

@CPAPReviews Gidday mate - MY S9 gave me the warning at about 24,000 hours - thanks for reassuring us that we CAN continue using it, without risking anything. Seeing inside via your videos, has made me think about replacing the motor anyway (talk about grimy!) - Can't be great for our lungs to breath all that crud in! I assume of course, that aftermarket IS the only way to source a new motor? Is there a way to reset to zero, the usage, once the motors been replaced, or is it permanently there in the software? Thanks mate!

I am glad I saw this video. I have the Phillips Dreamstation or whatever it’s called and it’s on the recall list. Someone gave me the ResMed S9 they were no longer using and I just didn’t feel comfortable using it and now I really don’t feel comfortable using it ever. I just think of all the dust from someone else’s home being inside that machine and if someone smoked in the home it’s sure to be in that machine. I really need a new machine but our insurance is a high dollar deductible so I would have to pay for the machine out of pocket as we never meet the deductible even with a family of 7. Insurance sucks because we pay a high dollar amount just to have it and make the insurance company richer but yet we still pay for everything. If we don’t have it we get fined so it’s a lose lose situation for us anyways.

Hey mate, yeah i agree! The philips ones you can take apart with a few screws and give a good clean. It's simple! ResMed has these fused casings and there's no need for it. This is highly dependent on your room air quality and whether you use a fine hypoallergenic filter that's always changed regularly. For example, a home in suburb Florida where the AC runs most of the time with no pets will generally have cleaner air than a home in a colder northern city with pets.

Hey brother! Stay well 🙏... Airsense 9, same exact thing, gunked up motor, you may or may not remember my Airsense 10 died after only 8 months use with a rattling motor only to eventually seize... I went everywhere to find a motor, nobody wanted to just sell the motor.. same with this S9 I am refurbishing but stopped because... it has that infamous message that motor life is exceeded and it is useless for me to buy a motor and still have that message... nobody in their right mind will buy a machine even with a new motor because of Resmed and their unstoppable message.

Regarding the dust problem I am wondering if making a large enclosed filter box might be a benefit. As as an example, use an upturned milk crate covering the CPAP machine which is clad in a foam covering as a first line of dust retardation ! Easy to clean or replace. Maybe the subscribers could come up with some other suggestions. It could be a good cottage industry for Nico and the kids ! ha ha. I wonder what effect all that gunk has on the pressures achieved by the machine - both true pressure and displayed pressure? Before my Dreamstation AVAPS , I had an S9 VPAP Auto. I started getting headaches and I felt the S9 wasn’t giving me the pressures that it used to. My settings were at the max for the machine. Subsequently I was found to have an element of central sleep apnea on top of my severe obstructive sleep apnea and hence the AVAPS with the Dreamstation also providing for higher max pressures.
Do you think in addition to being un-hygienic, all that gunk could compromise performance?

When I googled "CF-36850-1" this appears to be a standard pollen filter. Am I correct about this? Many online CPAP suppliers sell the CF-36855-1 as the Hypoallergenic Ultrafine Filter for the Resmed S9 & S10 Series, Airsense 10. Is the CF-36855-1 the filter that I should be getting?

So here is my single question for the day: IF I find that I can acquire the Prism 20A, or if I am stuck with the other 2 choices, what do you know about the serviceability of their motors with respect to the gist of your article about the s9?
    Thank you doctor!!

Don’t know what you think of this Nick, but I bought a material sleeve to cover my tubing to stop condensation in the tubing. One night there was a god almighty loud bang/whistle like a train, I woke suddenly of course and there was soot in the mask and my nostrils, it was all very strange. I took the machine to Resmed who took it apart but they could find nothing wrong with it. I always thought it was static building between the tube and the material covering I had bought, but maybe it was dust….who knows, anyway after that I got the heated tubing yea !!!

@@CPAPReviews Hi Nicko, Yeah pretty nuts, gave me a fright I can tell you. The guys at Resmed even thought it might be psychic phenomena 🤣 Personally after seeing the dust in that motor you showed on your video I think it must have been a combination of dust and electrical charge caused by the friction of the nylon sleeve over the plastic tubing, but who knows. Hope you are feeling a bit better today my friend 🤗

Wow. Maybe unless these things ever become user replacable this dirty little secret makes it reasonable to have their machines refuse to run after a set number of hours. It would be much better if they would design them to be economical to repair in the first place, but that good old conflict of interest when they can sell a whole expensive machine instead always gets us wasting things every time. Glad I got myself and my father a new AS10 before all the CPAP drama and pricing kicked in. Thanks for the teardown.

Cheers Sammy, thanks for your great comment! It's very true. ResMed would much prefer you buy a whole new machine then replace a $50 turbine. the turbine gets dirty if the filter is not used every time. I just opened mine after 12 years and it is clean as a whistle. I just removed the foam. it may be the main filter and or sound dampener, but I would rather breath the environmental air then risk having it breakdown overtime given the recent risks for the other recalled machines. I think I will make a filter box that goes around the machine to provide more filtration while of course leaving the pre filter in place.

I wonder if you could’ve use the air compressor to blow that out? Also I would like to make this observation if you don’t use a CPAP machine then you’re breathing in the dust that’s in the room at least with the CPAP machine you have a greater chance of stopping the dust from getting into your lungs because the CPAP machine has a filter if you do not use a CPAP machine you do not have a filter except for your nose but you have that regardless. Just a thought. I hope you do not have Covid

    • @CPAPReviews

Hi Anthony, i don't think so mate but it's a good idea. It's a fair point you make however there's a whole lot more airflow compared to normal breathing so there's a whole lot extra dust and particles that are getting pulled in from the air. Cheers man. Nick

I know this video is several months old but that's unexcusable. These machines need to be accessible for easy cleaning and maintenance. These companies know their products are blowing air in patients lungs which are sensitive to contamination. The color of this dust has me really concerned about the patients health and further analysis should be done. The most common dust is dander and household types of dust. This looks like a CPAP in use just outside a coal mine.🧐 Duel filtration is important in my opinion. Machines need it to work properly as much as the patient needs it to live properly.

I would bet money that this machine belonged to a smoker! It looks like soot that firms in furniture and clothing that hasn't been washed in ages(curtains). I just don't see how that much dust could otherwise get past the filter. It had to be coming from they're lungs!

I have just bought ResMed S9 Escape of marketplace for like next to nothing. And, to my surprise it has only 117 clinical hrs, and humidifier chamber still have plastic on it...😀😀
But here is the thing, i never knew S9 series have 5 models. And Escape is not the best one, it won't record AHI, just hrs of use overnight.
Considering turbine still in excellent condition, is it possible to swap parts between S9 autoset and escape to make a refurbished Autoset for myself as a backup machine? Any idea where to find internal parts for S9, or if someone have a broken S9 Autoset, so that i can test my skills...🙂🙂

Or if possible, please let me know will definitely try for fun... 😀😀
