Since my original foam removal video there has been a large number of tutorials provided on youtube. Some using coat hangers, others with various drill bits however i really like this technique which leaves the turbine casing in perfect, original condition.
It uses a device called a drain weasel which is normally used to unclog drains - cpap.review/dr...
Once connect to a drill however it can be inserted into the turbine casing and with a slow drill speed can be used to wrap around and grab hold of the foam. Once it has grabbed hold you can then slowly and gently pull the foam out through the air pathway holes in casing.
It's relatively easy to do and should only take between 10-20 minutes once you have the casing out of your device.

Disclaimer - this video is for general interest only. I'm not recommending that you do this as both Philips and the FDA has recommended that you do not take the foam out.
If you do decide to take it out i would consider keeping it as evidence if a lawsuit is required in the future.

Drove to Home Depot, dropped 6 bucks on a drain weasel, came home, loosely followed these directions, 10 minutes later, foam is cleanly out. No cuts, no holes. THANK YOU FOR POSTING! I will now use this as my primary and use the new garbage Dreamstation 2 they sent as a travel unit.
May I ask, what didn't you like about the Dreamstation 2?

Just did this, took maybe 5 mins. Right side is easy, left side takes some bending and work but fast and easy and don’t mess up your air box. Thanks for this!

Great video! Wish I'd known about this method before I cut holes in my casing. Still worked out ok. Used a wood burning iron with a flat diamond shaped blade to cut flaps in the casing then resealed them by melting them closed. This would have much easier. Thanks for all your informative vids!

Using a wood burning tool to make a flap, then re-melt the plastic closed is a very good idea, too. Much cleaner than any cutting tool. Good job!
works like a charm. Have to use the drill extremely slowly. Once the weasel comes in contact with the foam just a slight press of trigger without letting it rotate a full turn iteratively does the trick. I rolled aluminum foil into a stick and used it as a guide for the weasel to connect to the foam in the chamber with the top hole access and that worked very well. Thanks for the video and all you do!
Can you explain how you used the aluminum foil? I have worked 4 days on this with very little success!
@@disneyworldinfo Unfortunately I no longer have the machine as I returned it back to Phillips. You have to make a thing long roll of the foil long enough and stiff enough to be able to push the foam closer to where the weasel can come in contact. Once you achieve that it catches it and entangles the foam. Without the foil, because of the steep angle and narrowness, its almost impossible for the weasel to reach to the foam and then it just rotates around air.

Gegday mate!The Foam in my Dreamstation(circa2018) is mostly destroyed from OZONE. What is left in the one chamber is 80% gone with the rest being soft and crumbly/smeary. The turbine is a sealed unit (glued).I have replaced it with a 3 B medical Luna II and have retired my SoClean.
Same here. Gooey mess. I soaked it in hot water with dishwasher soap and got it clean. Let it sit in the soapy solution for a couple of days.
Brilliant idea. Easy to find in stock at local diy in the states. Will do the surgery tomorrow and report back!
That worked great was easy and only cost me $2.99 for the weasel i have been on the list since last year and had to buy a another cpap machine cause i drive truck and have to wear it to stay compliant here in the states I bought a luna 2 the power cord failed last night and today i operated on my dream station thank you for posting this i have watched many of your vids and they are very informative

Wish I found you a year ago, that’s one full yr not using this thing and life without much sleep...
I did the easier hole first with the same model drill... even on slow I over torqued the plastic and it stretched, needing a second trim almost too short ...
finished that hole and did the second one by hand with the backup weasel and using the included crank, slider in my teeth to one side of my face , and guiding/supporting the shaft with my freehand.
I RECOMMEND THAT INSTEAD. I don’t think the power of the drill is an advantage, in fact I got to “feel” the process through both hands , and knew when to stop torquing and pull instead. A COMBO of continuous torque (after the snag, and sometimes re-snag) and slow pull was even better. With careful turning, you can coil that bugger up right small and slide it out easy.
The harder hole was actually easier that way, “by feel” and softer pull/turn.
SECONDLY: I was worried it would sound like a lawnmower once removed. I’m almost mad how little it changed... IE ALL THAT TOXIC FOAM AND CANCER RISK for what?? How much engineering for what? People, don’t worry about it, do this method and DONT worry about being kept awake by sound.
TEST: what I did was set up the old analog Teac tape deck and Tandberg microphones (probably 40 yrs old minimum!) and did a before after comparison. I used old analog cuz of how exacting the VU meters are, how I could lock in the level, because I know there’s no auto gain modern stuff in it, and can get a real accurate comparison.
For good measure i laid the ipad on top more for picking up vibration changes not t caring about auto gain.
I didn’t monitor the recording with headphones, which wasted the effort. Because I would have heard the wildly odd unnatural howl that was recorded. Only way I can describe it is sounded like a DIGITAL tone generator that rose and fell with the machine matching my breathing in or out.
The tone was so loud you couldn’t hear the hiss of air flow at all... really confounding..
You can’t hear it by ear, so obviously the turbine interferes with the old mikes somehow. They have 4 foot leads so the deck was far enuf away I think. It is odd because they have a diaphragm for pickup, not a chip. It should only be picking up sound waves hitting the diaphragm.
THE IPAD didn’t pick up the interference LOLLL. It did pick up a change of sound but not an increase of sound.
But whatever. I’m excited to get a real good sleep tonight without the cancer
Followup: I used some guitar tuner apps on the ipad and the tone generator that comes with. Sine wave matches the best tone when trying to dupe the sound on the tape recording.
The fast tuning spectrum graph shows the high tone (most airflow) was usually an E♭4 running 303.7 Hz, with all the app settings default and A = 440. Then the low artificial tone still sounded like the tone generator sine wave equivalent, spectrogram showed C♯3 at 140.9 Hz most of the time.
why the tones sounded like the app's tone generator when emitting at those freq's I still am not sure of. Sounds 'digital', overriding all the other pickup sounds (like the air flow hiss) in through the analog gear. Moving the mics back barely two feet totally eradicated the 'tone sound' and picked up room noise, the air flowing, and my voice again. Using the headphones to monitor first wouldve informed me that the constant VU balance I thought was airflow hiss was this 'tone' instead.
And no it wasnt feedback, I made sure to have the speaker volume at zero and the amp set to a totally different output as insurance, while the input to the recording deck was just the mics. Wierdness.
OH AND YES. Delicious night's sleep, full 6.5 hrs without waking up once.
Rested.
I will go commando foam (naked) from now on, hope they DONT send a 'replacement' now.

I ordered the new air chamber without the foam. I installed it tonight with no issues and it seems to be working well. I'm kind of excited to begin my therapy with the DS1. I've been getting by with a pretty good F&P Icon.

worked on the inner one . the outer one was harder, so i drilled a hold. In retrospect, I should have drilled a hole from the inside since the chamber is still sealed when we put the turbine back in. In anycase. very helpful video since the Amazon replacement are no longer available

I struggled with this technique for hours before bashing the chamber apart with a hammer. It did not work at all, I am amazed it worked for anyone and incredibly jealous tbh. Does anyone happen to have an extra tank they removed the foam from?
This technique takes a lot of patience, kind of like fishing. While it worked after using a few drain weasels, there is a line of foam residue where the foam was glued to the case. Maybe safer to buy the replacement case on Amazon.
Did you find one without foam? Can you tell me how to search for the one on Amazon?

You actually don't need the drill. I did mine by hand with the handle that comes with it. The drain weasel twisted itself up because of the length, but after binding itself up it worked great. No extra tools, not much more time than done here. Just maybe a few extra minutes and some patience. Kept going until it wrapped itself around the foam and then slowly pulled out.

I couldn't for the life of me get the section out by the air intake port. Tried bending the tip of the weasel but it wouldn't catch it. Had to eventually drill two holes on the inside wall of the motor housing to pull it out bit by bit. The other side worked great.
1st I did not know there were 2 different drain weasels. The one you use to is the hair clog. I have gone through 5 drain weasels and still can’t get from out. Not sure what I am doing wrong!! So frustrated!!

Boy am I glad to have stumbled onto this method. I finally decided to remove the foam from my Dream Station and really didn't like the drilling holes method. Using the "weasel" is genius and remarkably easy. Thanks for the video, but how come everything is in reverse down there? lol. Great job!

Is doing these videos easier or harder with the red cordial you were drinking the other day? You are sounding much clearer in this one than in that video. The ravens are loving having you chatting with them in the back garden. If any sulphur crested cockatoos visit during filming, you'll be completely drowned out by them.

Just ordered 2 Dreamstation 1 air intake plenums without foam from Amazon @ $40 each to replace my original but foam removed plenums. I will do an OSCAR 1 day and 1 week data check before and after to confirm that the new plenum data ports are configured correctly and OSCAR data is similar to original. If the new ones are built correctly I should see no data change. Here is hoping 🤞

Installed both Amazon foamless air intake chambers in my two Dreamstation 1 Auto CPAPS. Installation was easy, needed needle nose pliers to carefully disconnect wire connector blocks on rear of circuit board. OSCAR one day data was virtually the same before and after installation so lack of foam made no operational difference. Machines were no noisier without noise abatement foam. Why did Resperonics ever use the foam in the first place?
I got my new Dreamstation from Philips today. Very excited. I followed all of the directions to a 'T'. None of it works. The device doesn't connect or download my settings off the memory card. I cannot enter it manually. It is essentially, a brick. I have to continue using my old device until someone gets back to me.
How can I get the foam that is still slightly glued to the plastic? I know it’s minuscule but it’s still toxic.
It took me a good 40 minutes to remove the foam, but some foam was left stuck to plastic ridges and I ended up having to drill some small holes big enough to insert a scalpel and cut the tops off the ridges where foam was stuck.

@@CPAPReviews my machine only 13 months old and never ozone cleaned. The foam was a little bit crumbly.
I tried ... but ... some little bits of the foam stayed inside on top of the ridge (very little) as if that was the glue point. So, although it's minimal, I've already had 10 years of Philips' death foam. Don't want another second of this, nor the tiniest bit of this foam. I ordered from Amazon. Thanks, next I'm off to the Dreamstation GO to give that foam a shot.

Thanks for the informative video and keeping us up to date with the CPAP issue. I registered and received my new replacement machine from Philips a week or so ago (main unit, power supply and hose in a new case) Thank you Philips. In the meantime, I had used the inline bacterial filter with no issues. They want me to now return my old unit. Should I?

Hi David i think the noise is very acceptable personally. Sure it's a little louder but it's only marginally and i would prefer a little more noise then breathing in toxic gas every night. Cheers
Philips sent my replacement this spring, but the replacement is soooo loud (turbo shopvac loud) as to be unusable, when I tried to compare it to the old machine, the old machine was mysteriously inoperable. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?
Getting the 2nd foam out is nearly impossible. I wasn’t able to do it.

I don't think you can really do it wrong mate, You just jam the weasel in, use a low speed drill and then once it wraps around it you start pulling it out gently. Cheers

That's the way I took out mine but mine was all sticky and gooey and was disintegrating as I took it out.

Thnx. I'll be putting a new empty chamber in my original DS1 as I drilled and would like a new chamber. Question: is it necessary to remove the new silicon foam in the replacement DS1 should I ever get mine?
Yes, the new foam was never properly tested and can also release toxic VOCs.

Wow, really smart idea, thank you for passing it on. Worked great, had a little trouble with smaller chamber but it came out fine, just in 2 pieces as yours did. Didn't use ozone cleaner so foam still seemed to be intact. Anyway gave it a rinse with water, mostly dry already, should be ready to put back together tomorrow. Unfortunately my particular turbine is sealed so won't be able to get in there, oh well, hopefully there isn't to much debris in there anyway.
Was sorry to read in the comments people struggling to remove foam that was beginning to degrade. Phillips really should have made available a foamless chamber for all those willing to replace it in their own machines, instead of leaving them to struggle to get the foam out on their own to make their machines useable again.
Anyway thankful for people like you who take the initiative and stand in the gap to provide useful information when corporations cower in silence. Thanks again 👍

the one side, it won't on
the other. You can't bend the weasel 90 degrees to reach the side by the filter. I ended drill 3/8" hole on
top on both sides in the
middle of foam section.
Bent a thin stiff wire into a hook, grabbed the foam, twisted and pulled foam out. Used a vac to pull any small
Crumbs left behind. Try not to scratch the inside plastic, or foam
will stick to any rough
scratches left behind.
Super glue a 1/2"x 1/2"
Square to cover the holes.
What was the point of the foam in the first place? Honest question

Wow, wish I had known. I cut a hole and took mine out. Then put glue to put piece back in. Now I just smell plastic and I am afraid to use my machine.

G'day mate, that black foam glued is the breakdown they are talking about. It get's all sticky and turns to muck. I'm not sure what you can use. Could try some boiling water and perhaps a instrument tube brush. If you can't get it out then just buy a brand new casing - ruclips.net/video/DuVeh2q-78c/видео.html . They're pretty cheap. Cheers

Hi there, yeah it's a bit harder that side but if you keep pushing it back in and out and try different angles it will eventually hit the foam. I think i was trying to push it off the roof so that weasel made like a U shape. I'll see if i can get another chamber and show you :)
@@CPAPReviews Nicko, I think it would be really great if you could show exactly how to get the Drain Weasel to make contact with the smaller piece of foam. Howard Morland's video also fails to show how he got his Weasel to make contact. Both he and you only showed pulling it out AFTER the contact was made (there is a skip in the video). After much "weeping and gnashing of teeth" I was finally able to get it out, but I also took a long time to do it. I tried reviewing your video and Mr. Morland's, but neither of you showed how you got the Drain Weasel to make contact. Since this was the most difficult part of the procedure, it should have been the most detailed in the videos. BTW, another little detail is how to get the back of the top off of the DreamStation. No mention was made in your earlier videos that the tabs (inside the rectangular holes on the back) should be pushed in to disengage the top cover from the back plate.
Nevertheless, I very much THANK YOU for showing us that this is possible. I think we need to contact the Pope and have you named Saint Nick. All the kids would love you at Christmas time. (And the beard you had earlier is almost white enough, too! ;-) )

HELP! The procedure worked great for getting the foam out but now my dream station won't run. THe power light comes on and then after w few seconds it starts beeping,. Nothing appears on the screen. Unplugged it a few times and at one point the fan did start running but start again once turned off.. Took it all apart and made sure connectors were inserted properly. I originally did not remove the ribbon cable from the board but was careful in handling the board and front panel so as not to hurt the Ribbon cable. I have since removed the ribbon cable from the board and reconnected but still no display.I examined the ribbon cable and it's connection to the front panel and all looked good. Any idea on what to do?
Will it be much louder without the foam?…..

The WEASEL didnt work on the Newer White Foam, it wont catch the foam like it did on the Black Foam. Had to cut it open.

I barely noticed any difference after foam removal. My ds1 is about a year old.
I removed the foam in my DS1 half a year ago. By drilling access holes in the plenum, removing the foam with Merle nose pliers and then blocking the holes. Oscar data was the same before and after foam removal and there was virtually no difference in noise level. Have registered for the recall, received a task number but nothing else. I’m in Canada.

did mine the same way works great. at the time I tried to do something like the weasel couldn't get done so went with the drill

I don’t know if anything is happening here in Chinada at all. I don’t read of anyone getting serviced.
My sleep clinic didn’t make it thru the stupid lockdowns and they went under. No word of notice on that either, just tried to get help one day and landlord foreclosure sign was on door. So took the cell chip out, where was my data going all that time?? Didn’t want it going to “unknowns”.
I got a recall service number too but that’s it. Still. In well over a year.
Tried finding old email or numbers to contact a follow up, nada.
I don’t know if I’m ineligible now the clinic went under or if they deal with individuals one on one (I hope they do)
Now I got the foam out I’m considering just the class action lawsuit... I don’t trust them not to replace it with something just as poisonous, looking at that tear down video of a “replacement” model That foam looked even worse and more likely to flake.
Actually, I kind of hope they DONT ever follow up, but hope the class action lawyers do... I prefer that outcome, and the lack of foam appeals more too
I removed my foam using the drain weasel. Has anyone noticed to much air flow after doing this?? I backed my pressure down to the lowest setting and still get way to much air flow. HELP!!

Can anyone advise if the foam was glued down? Was there residue left in the chamber after removing the foam? If so, how did you clean the chamber after removing the foam?
G'day, it should not be glued down but it can sometimes feel that way as when the foam degrades it gets sticky and feels like it has been stuck down. Not sure how you could clean it out after removal. I was able just to blow mine out. Cheers
I found some foam was stuck inside (I've never used uvc or ozone).and had to drill small holes to allow a scalpel blade to be inserted to cut out the ridges where the foam was stuck.
It's kind of strange that, in my case, I DID use ozone for about two years (about two times per week) before stopping its use back in June (after the recall). However, when I took the foam out today (using a Drain Weasel), none of it stuck in the chamber. It did crumble very slightly (found one or two small, but loose, particles in the chamber after removal). I just rinsed out the chamber with tap water and it is now air-drying in my bedroom.

Shorter version of my earlier post... I would’ve used a dB meter if I had access to one, so I used an analog tape deck instead knowing it didn’t have built in auto gain/correcting stuff in it.

I would say the sound changes but doesn’t get louder, kind of like the sound of something sticking outside your car window on the highway if it turns, tonality changes not volume.
Frustrated, spent a long time working on this. removed the foam that is accessible from the center bottom. But for the one located near the top, cannot get the drain weasel into the foam. It always is below the foam. Have tried bending the weasel also. This is a brand new unused machine from 2017, wondering if the hole to access the foam might be slightly different. suggestions please, thanks, I really appreciate the channel.
You can get it mate, just need to keep pusing around, try different angles with the drill / weasel, you almost need to bend it off the inside roof of the housing. If you can't get it then just buy the empty case off amazon for $30 ruclips.net/video/DuVeh2q-78c/видео.html
Mine was also purchased in 2017 and the smaller piece of foam was definitely extremely difficult to extract. The little "funnel" shape of the air inlet (where the filters attach) would not allow the Drain Weasel to make contact with the foam. So, I also wonder if there was any change to the design since 2017. I bent the Drain Weasel wand and just made sure to turn the drill VERY slowly. I had to try several times and it finally caught on the foam. BTW, the turbine housing on mine was the "sealed" type and did not have the accessible screws shown in Nicko's video. I used a small hand-held hobby vac on both ports of the turbine. Hope that is enough to remove any foam particles from the turbine.

It looks like there are some broken foam particles left behind in the chamber. Can they be rinsed out or blown out. The problem is they put bitters in canned air. It really pisses me off that for a few that abused canned air, they ruined canned air for a lot of legitimate uses. (I.e. electronics etc.) I have an air compressor but do not consider that as a very sterile option. I have to wait till January 6th to even get a script for a new CPAP. I have older dinosaur Resperonic machine that still works, that I could use that if I mess this up. It uses the old credit card style memory cards. I use it for camping because it works great on battery power. My sleep doctor hates it because they can no longer read those cards.

A year too late but will toss this in here... Dunno about water... look at the separation area between the two foam chambers, there appears to be some further filtering device, window, something.... looks like a set of blinds or pleats like on a filter for your car dividing the two chambers.
might wind up washing particulate up on it or maybe water compromise it or mould it, while air wouldn’t. Then again air might damage it too if too much pressure. I went for light air from blower on low and held far from the opening.

THAT is a VERY good question. The stated (by Philips) reason is to lessen the noise that the machine makes when you run it, so they are calling it "nose abatement foam". But almost everyone who has removed the foam, or replaced the air chamber with a foamless one, notice very little, or no difference in the noise level. The fact that Philips put this toxic material in their product, and then made the deliberate, conscious choice to stay quiet about its toxicity for at least two or three years after becoming aware of the problems, makes me wonder if they really are trying to rid the world of people with respiratory ailments. Make no mistake. These people (Philips executives) are criminals who should be put away for life. They should be forced to use their own respiratory products (with the toxic foam) every night for the rest of their lives.

Something is fishy. He happens to accidentally miss recording the part nobody can get to work on the input. Even when he demonstrates a second time, there is a cut in the video where the most difficult / impossible part is - grabbing it with the weasel.
Also, he says try to get it out in one piece. How is that even possible? There is a plastic cylinder going right through the middle of the foam top to bottom. It has to break in two to come out.
