Your understanding of the golf swing continually amazes me. There are so many intricacies that I never thought about! Thanks for another great lesson! David, USA.
Very impressive explanation! I had applied it to my swing before and found it to keep my strike much more consistently and straightly. What I understood is that the initial movement of your downswing should feel like "down, down, down" from your lead arm, lead side of hip and right hand to make a following proper rotation of your body. However, to ensure it to be done properly, a good backswing is a must (weight shift to trail foot).
Very interesting. I can understand why someone would keep their arms so passive. So many golf instructors are trying to keep people from starting the downswing with the arms to prevent them from coming over the top. But at some time the arms have to become active in the swing. This video really seems to provide a solution to this problem.
Btw, after trying to watch all the other channels and trying to improve I realized how much harm that was doing. Your chanel is my go to now. Keep up the great content.
The reverse K at setup helped send me down a dark road for years! Flat shoulder turn and a lead shoulder that moved up too early kept me under plane for a couple of decades.
Very good. KEY: Don't loose the height of your trail side in takeaway/backswing. If you do, you "pop out" and cant make the move you suggest. Big fault of mine was to begin the downswing with a recentering move that pushed the lead shoulder across the ball rather than down. This caused me to drag the club through the ball....high wipes were the miss. I have been working on getting that first shoulder move to be down, with the lead leg flexing (making lead side/hip go down)...your video confirms I am on the right track. Thanks.
Another fine Video; thx. The 2nd down, I found squaring the lead hip back to provide the clearance space to get club back on plane as opposed to down. Some professional refer this down to a squat motion , which i guess it is, but "simpler" is to square the lead hip up and start the rotation process for downswing. Perhaps semantics , perhaps the same, but it works for me.
Tried this... Made five birdies on the front nine today. Easy tip, great for irons, but very different than driver swing. Please explain the path changes with the driver off the tee!
My last practice session at the range, I was hitting punch shots, short swings with every club just working on ball striking. Then full shots thinking of the feel of the solid punch shots. Tried to work on proper aiming alignment. I think it helped a little bit on the course. Hit driver straight down the fairway 3 tee shots in a row. Then the next 4 tee shots hit hooks. That was like the first consistency off the tee I've seen.
Very good Chris. I love seeing a swing which "squats" from the top (Rory). My bad advice comes from pro's 30 years ago at the Trafford Centre..."get behind the ball and bump forward from the top". It taught me to sway my head away from target. I can't believe that back then no-one talked about staying centred
This is exactly my problem. Always told to stay behind the ball. I developed a ugly sway and hit up with my irons with no distance. It worked well with my driver. But now that I am working on my iron ball striking, I struggle staying center in the backswing and it feels really awkward. I have improved my iron striking but lo and behold now my driver is all over the place. How do the pros hit up with driver with shaft lean? I have to hit up by repositioning my low point so that I hit on the way up which is losing distance.
Chris, love the consistency across your videos. Do like the simplicity of the Down x3. Lead hip down looks like a good diagonal lateral shift movement. What is the timing of these moves? Does the hip down move get started before you complete your backswing? Or in early stage of transition? The 3x downs seem to happen almost all together? This reminds me of your drill with the 2x alignment sticks swinging them / bringing them down off your chest and stopping abruptly at delivery having shifted into a squat (ready to jump) position. Brilliant advice. One question I have is around the trail shoulder. Provided you move your lead shoulder & hip down and hands down do you get a decent trail shoulder pivot motion for free? In the golfer who didn’t have the down with his arms it looks like he tried to bump his hips and dip his shoulder ti get to the ball. My understanding is you need to have some pivot / shoulder rotation to get down into this great delivery position. Do the shoulders start pivoting straight away in transition? In your example it doesn’t look like him moving his lead hip and shoulder required any / much shoulder or rotation to that point? Your back being still mainly facing the target at the Delivery position. Maybe a slight rotation on moving his lead arm down? Myles
Another winner Chris thanks again for your great insight. Would love to see your top indoor drills for the winter so we can hit the ground running in spring. Pretty cold here in Wisconsin now.
I LOVE golf! There are about 100 "how to hit a golf ball" theories. All of them work ... provided you don't mix and match. The student you were working with was definitely in trouble .. especially since he was missing the second half of what "that group" of theorists call the "compound pivot." Of course, your solution works but it is based on a wholly different branch of theory. As you mentioned, I've thrown away years of golfing ..because I mixed and matched. Not knowing until way too late that it was because I was mixing and matching. **** Just a quick update on me, personally , I'm still shooting scores in the low 70's MANY THANKS TO CR ****
Hi Chris! I believe this is very good golf instruction and advice. Is it safe to assume that the same fundamental apply to the driver swing except you have the ball teed up further forward off your lead foot and your spine is tilted slightly to promote an upward sweep of the ball off of the tee?
Chris...love your videos but a question about this one...with the hip going down, what do you do to prevent a sway? At some point the hip has to stop going down and rotate...do you have a video for that movement please?
Hey Gary, yes that movement should then turn into a rotation and push away from the ground to avoid issues at impact, when is really down to timing but should begin around half way into the downswing 👍
@@ChrisRyanGolf Thanks Chris...so when you say push away, push away with the toes on the front foot so the the knee goes back? I tend to let the knee keep on going down which ends up as a slide or dip....
Hi Chria, Excellent demonstration and explanation of how to effect the transition- three downs. But how does one get the lead hip/shoulders to go down from the top of the back swing? My solution, don't know if it is right, was to bend the lead knee down and forward about 45 degree angle to the target. This makes lead hip and shoulder to go down. Any comment?
Hey Harold, it tend to come from a slight increase in flex on the body, so manly from the lead hip. The moment that you make to create your set up, and increase on that angle should help 👍
Hey Chris, I really enjoy your teaching style and believe in supporting your channel. Does your ultimate ball striking course contain new material that isn’t covered in you videos. Hey Don thanks for watching, the course on the website is a different way of leaning the game. Here on RUclips I can provide tips and drills to fix certain issues, the ball striking course is ‘in my opinion’ a much better and systematic way of leaning and I believe it provides a lot more value. In truth, many of the drills within the course are here on youtube, but not presented on the same way Hope that makes sense and more than happy to help further if you have any questions 👍
Hey Chris, That certainly makes sense. I will be ordering and look forward to getting better at the game we all love. Thanks so much and best wishes to you and yours. Talk with you soon.
I have managed to play reasonable golf despite terrible tips! Passive arms was one of them! along with stuffing things under my armpits!, get behind the ball,1 piece takeaway, lag the club etc etc .Now ive got rid of all that rubbish im a good golfer and i can relate to your down down down video as long as youve got the athletic ability to go up up up!
One thing a local club pro suggested to me years ago was... "Keep your head behind the ball!" He saw I would sway forward such that my head would move ahead of the ball on the downswing. Obviously this led to too steep a swing, tops, etc. the problem was he didn't tell me HOW to keep my head behind the ball. When trying to stay back, I found it was difficult to shift my weight to the front foot on the downswing, and the weight stays back on the back foot. Since then I have realized it isn't so much keeping my head behind or move ahead of the ball, but to KEEP MY HEAD STILL, and if I setup with a slight tilt and my head slightly behind the ball, if I keep centered during my swing, I have less lateral movement.
Wasn't exactly a bad tip, but an instructor was telling me about "early extension" in a way that made me think he was talking about casting from the top, flipping, etc. Took me a long time to figure out otherwise.
Hey Ed, thanks angle glad you enjoyed the video. The description box below the video has a link which will take you over to my website where the series is, let me know if you have any problems and I can help
Hello Chris, my question is related to the arms, do you throw your arms down directly from the shoulders sockets or you push down with the chest to make the arms go down? any other?
Hi Chris, I am learning a bodyswing to spare my back, and clear the Hips early, less using my arms. Your explanation of using arms is very usefull. At what moment do you clear the hip when you use the arms?
This is exactly what my issue has been for the past year. I’ve struggled to get my arm down resulting it a push slice, fat shots and poor strikes. Does this drill/ feeling also work with the metals?
I'm even more lost than before 😅 does the rotation ever drags the arms in the downswing. I think one of the advice o listened too was tge backswing is a spring, tighter coil for more power
I don’t know if it was the worst advice or how I interpreted it and that was low and slow. It Made me get my right elbow way to far from my body on the takeaway.
I think the way the "connected" swing is taught gives a lot of beginners trouble, it creates too much tension in the arms and chest. Rather, emphasis should be put on body rotation being the driver for speed and distance.
I hear this every time I play or practice at the range. Don't lift your head, don't swing with your arms, turn your waist. When I see a coach, he then told me if you don't use your arms, what you gonna use? He actually said swing is 85% your arms.
this was me, I "feel that the club is dropping down in front of me." Kind of like Justin Rose? BUT this move seems contradictory to starting the downswing with the lower body with separation. But I believe when I do make this move my lower body actually starts to shift and turn. Almost impossible not to with an athletic swing. ?????
By doing your suggested moves, one automatically raise their body through impact. Worst advice was turn your torso against your lower body. Caused instance back problems. Thx. Tom
Keep your head down... I was standing up in my down swing. Just looked like my head was lifting. Now I know I can lift my head and look at target which actually helps me. Another one is hit down on your irons. Well, aren't I already hitting hitting down on it? With that thought process I was very steep and fatting a lot of shots.
My worst advice > Start downswing by shoving both knees towards the target. My slide now seems to be a permanent part of my DNA . I believe I picked this off the cover of Golf Digest ! Should sue them😂
The worst well-meaning advice of all time is “keep your head down” or “you raised you head on that shot”. I guarantee anyone that has ever told you that has no idea why your head moved up, almost as if they think you just arbitrarily decided to fling it skyward.
In my earlier years I was taught that in the backswing the upper body should rotate on a braced or fixed lower body. As I lost flexibility in my fifties and sixties it became obvious to me that in order to rotate fully I needed to free up the lower body in the turn. This has made a huge difference in my ball striking..
