    Went straight to the range after watching this and in about 3 swings got a totally different feel/result. Much better, more consistent contact and ball flight. I played a lot of baseball in my youth, but never used the "shallowing" idea for golf. It really worked. Another great video.

      How interesting and sad it is that with all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, and thank you for sharing your improvement.
      Keep up the great work!!

      After all the lessons I’ve had over ten years not one golf teacher has mentioned the butt leading the clubhead down. My difficulties continued until now. Thanks to you I can now feel the club shallowing and the butt leading the way. In fact this move forces my hips to move first. It felt though that the clubhead was never going to find the ball, but it does. Also feels like it’s coming in sideways but it squares up with the hips turning. Amazing feeling! It seems the teachers here in Australia don’t want to give too many secrets away so we have to keep going back and back again. I’ve always been told to shift my weight better, nothing about the way the club comes down. I’ve casted and topped and fatted my way to an 18 handicap. My shots are now crispy, what a difference. Love your videos 🙏

    I’m writing you a tremendous thank you. I’m 53 and been playing since I was 14. It’s the only sport I’ve struggled with. I played basketball and baseball in college. I could dunk 2 handed and hit a baseball 450’. Tournament water skied in my 20’s and 30’s. Raced motorcycles. I was good at all stick and ball sports. But golf always tortured me. I was athletic enough to get by. Played to a 5 handicap but didn’t know if I was gonna shoot 73 or 83. But since coming across your channel I’m scratch easy. I got by because I could hit it a ton. Club head speed in my early 40’s was 121 so if I halfway kept it in play I’d do ok. After coming across rolling your ankle on the downswing video the athletic lightbulb went off. I’m easily scratch or better now. I even putt with my feet now making a minuscule imperceptible roll/banking move in my forward stroke. It keeps my putter square and accelerating. The physics of the strike in the full swing is unreal. You feel like you’re doing very little and the ball explodes off the club. WHat I’ve realized is by banking the right foot and keeping the inside of the heel down it drives the hips in the right direction not spinning and it forces you to use your right side to and through the strike and you hit the ball hard with the palm of the right hand like a shove just like a baseball swing. And you finish with the back of your right hand and the palm of your left facing your target. I’ve also noticed now the great ball strikers keep their heel on the ground longer. With irons Palmer and Trevino and hogan don’t release their heel from the ground until the club is at 3 o’clock or past. Other pros I’ve seen couples els are like 4 o’clock. I’m hitting absolute lasers. Sad though I’ve lost about 12 mph since my early 40’. Using this I don’t struggle with alignment anymore, use it on chips they’re all solid with zip, flop shots I set up open open the face and just bank the ankle with my body lines. All you have to do now to move the ball left or right is do what Jack said. Just aim left or right open or close the face and swing normally. It also changes your whole mindset on course management. If you get in trouble you don’t have to risk anything crazy. If I can get within sandwedge away I’m gonna put the ball 10-15 feet away and a great chance for par for example. They said hogan had a secret well I’ve discovered mine thanks to you. Bty the old guys had it going on straightening the trail leg in the back swing. That resisting and holding the flex is for the birds. I think a ton of pros were damaged with 90’s instruction.
    Oh bty my daughter and I entered a 2 man 2 weeks ago we shot 64 made 3 eagles took all the skins the first day. About 500$😂. She’s been playing 4 months. Again thank you. You’re a good a little unorthodox in a good way and the best online instructor I’ve ever seen. One more thing that simple move is why Trevino could take it outside and Palmer inside and it would reroute into the slot. Take a look at Miller barber that is proof in the pudding there. Use him as an example in a video on the importance of rolling the ankle.

      Hi Christopher,
      I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share your improvement in such detail. And congratulations to you and your daughter on firing a tremendous score and cleaning up on the skins!!
      Golf is indeed counterintuitive to those of us who excelled in other sports - particularly baseball - that is, until it is not. And the "not" part can only happen if we are truly able to understand the differences and properly harness the similarities. Sadly, "conventional" instruction never gave us that, and thus we have generations of amateur golfers - amongst them countless excellent athletes - senselessly stuck in the vast abyss of frustration and physical/psychological anguish. It doesn't have to be that way, and thankfully many good folks like yourself are discovering this and now getting on with enjoying the best golf of their lives.
      Thanks again for your kind words and support, keep up the fabulous work, and have fun out there with your new "golf buddy"!!

Completely changed my backswing for the better, and that in turn, has improved my downswing and ball striking. Really, Tom, this one is a major-league teaching tool.

      Major league?? LOL!!!
      I'm very glad to know that this baseball feel resonated well with you. As I've said to other former baseball players (I'm one myself), we need to understand the differences and harness the similarities between the two motions. Accomplish that and we can build a very good, consistent, powerful golf swing. Otherwise we can easily find ourselves stuck in the abyss of counter-intuitiveness.
      Thanks for your comment and support!!

    High level hitters in baseball actually tilt the shoulders in the downswing to get the butt of the bat travelling down the line and at the ball which produces this shallowing and then when they snap the hands the barrel goes right at the ball through the zone on the diagonal. You can see this with the baseball player in in the video. It's not well understood or taught but your video has demonstrated it perfectly here. The golf swing is the same way, you have to tilt and deliver the club, bat from a powerful position. You load, tilt and release, can help in both sports.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Justin!
      Obviously, the "tilt" in baseball is variable and reactionary depending on pitch location. In golf it is preestablished at address in relation to the static ball position. It is also not necessary - and is actually counterproductive - to try to time some kind of contrived, split-second "release" of the hands/wrists. The proper action through the zone will occur naturally if we train it and then simply allow it to happen.
      Thanks!

      The key in the backswing is to put yourself in position to make a transition into a good downswing. Watch a Tour event and you'll see a variety of backswings. Which one is "perfect"? It doesn't matter because they would not be on Tour if their downswing didn't consistently bring them to a solid impact condition.

    Great video. This has helped me a lot. At 3:56 you talk about the back of lead hand being “more skyward “. Many others talk about getting the club face angle matching the spine angle at P6. That requires turning the back of the lead hand more toward the ground. That created over the top swings 3:58
    With the more shallow approach to the ball as you described with the back of the lead hand somewhat skyward, is continuing to rotate the body the key to getting the club face square ? Thanks!

      With regard to your question, after the proper positions/motions are ingrained I much prefer entrusting the swing to the big muscles as opposed to contrived "handsy" manipulations that must be precisely repeated each and every time.
      Having said that, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts in my instruction wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why thousands of folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result (and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews ). Tom: Thanks. I’ve been working on this shallowing motion/feel and it helps a lot. Many other instructors, including those from whom I have taken lessons, emphasize to “turn the knuckles down”. That motion seems unnecessary in the swing which you teach. Am I correct about that and can forget about “knuckles down”? When I try it the ball seems to go left. Thanks for the clarification.

    Hi Tom ,
    Really enjoy your instructions. Thanks.
    What are your thoughts about having the right palm facing the sky ( or close as possible ) at the top of the backswing ? I find a lot of positive things happen , like keeping elbows together, right elbow pointed straight to the ground and below lead arm . It also keeps the left wrist flat or slightly bowed and also stops the wrists over hinging resulting in a cupped left wrist . It also promotes left forearm rotation in the last 20% of the backswing. It sets up transition , shallowing the club , getting it more behind you .
    Cheers, and thanks once again .

    The essential action can be very clearly seen in your baseball video example. Notice how as the baseball players shoulders come back to parallel with the swing line he starts side bending and keeps increasing the amount to the max possible. Notice how that side bending increases the downward angle of the shoulder line much more than the angle of the hips.
    That point of the golf swing where shoulders come back to parallel is when the mass of the lead arm is freed to accelerate down towards the ground much faster than the hips and shoulders are turning. What the tilting of the shoulders does at that point is change the force vector of that arm mass - which is still pulling on the club head mass - to point forward toward the target instead of rotating in a circle around the feet.
    I see very few older recreational golfers use any side bend in their swings, perhaps because it is not stressed very much as an essential action in golf instruction. Not without some irony nearly everyone will do the side bend action ideally with their trail arm releasing straight at the target if asked to throw a golf ball with just the trail hand. That is a great drill for grooving the feel of the side bend action and straightening of trail arm towards target needed to get the mass of the lead arm and club head mass it pulls down to release towards the target. 😊

    @sagutogolf Using the baseball analogy, what direction would the golf ball be coming at you from and what direction are you trying to hit it? In baseball, the ball is coming from 90-degrees from the direction you're facing and you're basically turning 90-degrees to hit the ball back in the direction from which it came. In golf, since you are bent over, from where would the ball be coming from and where would you be trying to hit it? Would the ball be rolling on the ground from down the line? Or would it be traveling up through the ground towards you?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      Hi Marc,
      We must recognize that although there are similarities - and the shallowing move demonstrated here is certainly an important one - there are also some definite differences between the baseball and golf swing motions that should not cross over from one to the other. In baseball, the ball is indeed moving and we have to react to the varying pitch speeds, locations, and curvatures, and as a result the swing plane is constantly changing from one pitch to the next. In golf, the ball is just sitting there on the ground - or a tee - on top of "home plate", so we orient ourselves to establish a relationship with that static position, and our swing plane is preset accordingly. It's therefore very difficult to make any comparison in this regard.

      Here's a lesson regarding keeping a steady head: ruclips.net/video/E5csidjztzg/видео.html As mentioned in the video, this was Jack Nicklaus' most important swing key.
      It's important to understand that the swing is a sequential orchestration. This is why it's always best to search upstream for the true cause of an issue rather than try to put a band aid on the symptom. So, for example, oftentimes when golfers believe they are lifting their head prematurely to see the ball flight, the true cause is actually something occurring out of sequence in the downswing. On the flip side, this also means that if you nail each successive variable - starting with the foundations of the setup - then you are facilitating the proper execution of the next swing element. That's how the sequential lessons and the drills of the school are designed to work.
      For a good starting point, here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ (I've recently updated it with some more of my favorite drills!)

    I know it’s your superb show but may I make an offering?
    I found this out for myself but there is an important change in the way your wrists move!
    I’ve gone away from rotating the wrists to a movement that is similar to beating a rug. Or say slapping. Imagine hitting a hockey stick. You wouldn’t rotate your wrists.
    This not only takes a shallower and longer divot ahead of the ball but also keeps the club face square in the impact zone for longer!
    Plus it’s easier to shallow the club.
    I not only hit it further but also I have lost my left hook.
    Plus!!!! It helps to create forward shaft lean!!
    Not many trainers mention the wrists.

    Love your explanations and demonstrations. I’ve been doing many things wrong for so long that it doesn’t always hold up on the course although at times there is improvement. I have one question that has nagged me for many years maybe you could address- what is the need for a back swing in golf ? You compare the golf swing to a baseball swing- there’s no back swing in baseball and the ball is moving all over at up to 100 mph. In golf we are trying to hit a stationary ball. My question is why can’t the golfer just start at the top of the back swing in the proper position and swing forward just as the baseball hitter does? This would seem to eliminate the part of the golf swing where many of my troubles begin- the back swing. Also since there is a stopping point in the back swing this seems to indicate there’s no need for it in the first place. Your thoughts would be appreciated-THANKS

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад +1

      Hi Gregory,
      It's very difficult to hit a stationary object from a static position. For example, try hitting a nail into a piece of wood without first swinging the hammer back. In baseball we are reacting quickly to a moving object approaching at constantly varying pitch speeds and in different locations. It would be very difficult to time these planned inconsistencies with a backswing.
      With regard to the golf swing, there's no reason you can't have a slight pause at the top to gather yourself and initiate the proper firing sequence of your downswing.
      Thanks for your question. I'm glad you are enjoying my content!!

The netting we used is 10' x 10' golf cage impact net purchased from Amazon, and it differs from the screening material in the video. Good video Tom. Also noticing how the baseball player's head doesn't move at all either, just like golf should be. Seems to work well, especially with driver. Would you recommend that swing feeling?

      Preventing the elbows from separating any further than the preestablished distance between them at address is a very important swing key for a properly shallowed downswing path and consistently crispy, powerful impact. If your feel is effective for accomplishing this and is producing the desired results, then I would simply suggest that you allow your ball striking and shot shape to be your guide.

    What size jumbo max grips do you use on your irons, Jeff? Is that the “small” size Jumbo Max?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад

      Hi Jason,
      I'm not sure who "Jeff" is 😎, but I’m using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large. I wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. These grips keep my hands much quieter - which I personally prefer. Also, since my fingers don't wrap all the way around and dig into my palms, I'm not triggering any forearm tension or activating arms muscles that may otherwise have a tendency to take control of the swing.
      The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.

      @@SagutoGolf Tom, I feel like an idiot because I KNOW your name’s Tom (I watch your channel constantly), and the only reason I wrote “Jeff” is because it was on my mind from reading another comment on one of your videos where a guy called you “Jeff” and you responded with an identical response to what you just you wrote to me 😂 I must’ve subconsciously typed the wrong name, and can’t believe my pig-headedness!? 😅😅 My sincerest apologies!
      With that being said, thank you for your response! I have the XL Ultralite on my driver, but didn’t know anyone else using that sized grip so I felt out of place and thought maybe they were too large because it? I gripped my other driver with the “small” Ultralite and liked that it felt more similar to a baseball bat grip (like you, I grew up playing baseball). However, I do miss the feeling of the XL! I was pleasantly surprised to watch one of your videos and notice that you were using the same brand grips as me, but couldn’t tell which size they were from the video (hence the reason I wrote this comment). I’m so stoked to know that you & I are in the same boat, and that I’m not the only one! I 100% agree that the larger grips feel great in the hand (I’m 6’4” with XL hands)! My question to you know is that with the XL grips being as large as they are, do you have trouble fitting a full set of XL-gripped irons in your golf bag? I had trouble even getting my one driver to fit comfortably in my bag, and that was just one club?

    I think one thing I noticed was how much hip turn you have. I think that must help in allowing you to shallow. I feel newbies often swing over the top because they don't get their hips out of the way and there is no place for their arms to go.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      Actually, my hip turn is being governed by the lateral movement. One major issue that amateurs routinely struggle with is too much hip turn occurring prematurely in the downswing. The technical term is "disassociation", meaning that the lower body moves laterally towards the target while the upper body - and therefore your swing center - remain in place. That's the formula for preventing the hips from spinning out early and routing the club steeply across the ball. Here's a lesson video on this topic: ruclips.net/video/dB4ItR3guGU/видео.html
      So yes - hip turn is an important component, but it must be kept at bay until the proper moment. The lateral action of the lower body accomplishes this for us.

    Does the downswing change at all if you already have a shallow backswing?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Год назад

      You don't need to You don't need to "drop it in the slot" if it's already there, Jeff. That's the theme of this lesson from my channel's archives: ruclips.net/video/0IxI_qmaF_A/видео.html
      With regard to the shallowness of your backswing, the swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders. As such, if we are going to remain on that circle/arc it requires the hands and club to take a slightly inward path - not a disconnected snatch or roll to the inside - just a natural tracing of the outer rim or circumference. Here are some lessons related to this:
      - ruclips.net/video/1gzcyrJ_yBw/видео.html
      - ruclips.net/video/WxDD63quyk8/видео.html
      - ruclips.net/video/ylVWSenTtOw/видео.html
      We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to harness the power of swinging on a circle through a seemingly effortless force known as angular momentum.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 месяцев назад

      Your shanks can be the result of a variety of actions: 1) You may be too steep on the downswing and thereby exposing the hosel to the ball; 2) Conversely, your downswing path may be too in to out; 3) You may be rolling the face open or snatching the club inside with the hands in the takeaway; 4) Your wrists may not be hinging properly (which is often the case when a golfer tries to manufacture or force the hinge rather than just allowing it to happen); 5) You are setting up with the ball positioned at the heel of the club; 6) You are losing your pre-established relationship with the ball (i.e.: a deficiency in the Tilt component); 7) More... What I'm getting at is that there are a number of potential causes, and without actually seeing your swing it's impossible for me to identify the culprit behind those hosel rockets.

    Your other video said your shoulders start the down swing ,???

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  14 дней назад

      Hi Brenda,
      When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help in overcoming this, correctly engaging their hips and fixing their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition.
      In general terms, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my RUclips content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following:
      1) They don't start with - or maintain - enough weight on the front side. In general with the longer clubs we should add a little more front weight load at address - more like 60/40 instead of the 55/45 prescribed for the other clubs. This forward weight should gradually increase to the top of the backswing (70/30) and build further on the downswing - approximately 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish.
      2) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Here's a channel video on this topic: ruclips.net/video/dB4ItR3guGU/видео.html
      3) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. Have a look at this lesson video: ruclips.net/video/o0xscMyN3v8/видео.html The shaft length of the longer clubs encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as you take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as you maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around you, it should put you in the proper position at the top so you can attack the ball from the inside.
      It’s essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. In fact, here is a video of Stack and Tilt co-founder Mike Bennett hitting the driver: ruclips.net/video/7fmtzyH3rsA/видео.html. It looks very similar to his iron swing, right?: ruclips.net/video/SLjwU_1Cc7o/видео.html If you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously.
      Speaking of which, if you'd really like to own this swing through your entire bag please consider enrolling in my online school as so many folks across the globe are now playing the best golf of their lives as a result. The school's intuitive curriculum greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, plus there’s so much additional guided instruction courses and content on the many other aspects of the game. Doesn't shallowing the club move the swing plane?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      The majority of amateur golfers get steep at the transition or early in the downswing, Sheldon, and as such they must fight that shot-killing tendency by emphasizing a shallowing "feel" in order to ultimately match the backswing plane (as discussed in this video: ruclips.net/video/0IxI_qmaF_A/видео.html )

      Have you actually been properly instructed in the system, or are you working off of a book and/or random videos? I ask this because most golfers who learn the S&T system properly stay with it for life as it produces consistently great results for them in a most sustainable, body-friendly manner.
      With regard to my YT content, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. So many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      @Rudra Patel - Actually, if one were to ask how many PGA Tour major championship winners TILTED, TURNED, and EXTENDED in the golf swing, the answer would be all of them! Stack and Tilt is a golf swing system based on data from the game’s best golf ball strikers. For this reason, someone can be embracing key Stack and Tilt elements without being aware of it. This is because there are basic requirements that must be met to hit a golf ball consistently on the center of the clubface. There are also components necessary to add power to the golf swing without sacrificing accuracy. Stack and Tilt determined, based on a study of the best golfers of all time, that they all had 3 things in common (the 3 main golf fundamentals): 1. Hit the ground in the same spot every time (consistently crispy contact) 2. Have enough power to play the golf course well (distance) 3. Be able to have a predictable curve (accuracy). A player MUST be able to do these three non-negotiables in order to truly be good at golf, and Stack and Tilt provides a road map for accomplishing them incredibly well in a low-maintenance and body-friendly manner. As far as Tour players using 100% of it, 99% of it, 97% of it, or 78% of it, it doesn't really matter because they're ALL doing it to some extent. Those 3 fundamentals never change!
