- A peaceful waterside field beside the oldest bridge over the higher reaches of the River Thames in Oxfordshire poses the perfect setting for a Time Team assault. Their mission? To uncover what looks like the remains of a large medieval castle buried under the grass.
I love it when the community comes out and participates. 😀
I have just discovered TIME TEAM during the 2020 COVID shelter in place. I am binge watching! I love Phil and Mick and Stewart ....Victor and his drawings........ and Tony is such a good ‘ring master’!
Debbie Williams ...Robin in the early seasons was awesome too. Same....I’m binge watching.
Me too
Time Team members and the producer have been buying up and posting the episodes under their own site in HD so people can watch them freely and in order on either site. It's nice to have them labelled by season so you can watch not only the changing of time with the experts and others involved but also how archaeological information and methods have changed over the two decades it aired.

They have even began taking donations to do other digs with the added benefit of more time to dig and accurately convey information about the site. So far they have funding for two digs and have one ready to go soon.

@@WyattRyeSway I love Robin. His way with words when talking about the things he discovered was incredible. Really came to life as he weaved his tales. RIP Robin.
Phil and Mick laughing at 4:30 is adorable. I love them both. RIP Mick. :(
I bet. I know i was. and he was gone a year before i ever discovered time team. (im american)
LOLOL I found it about 3 years ago, and you dont want to know what viewing im on. I put it on in the morning to listen to when I am doing housework, in the evening when im cooking. There are a few I know by heart. The Isle of Man is my favorite episode I think. :) Im a 53 year old grandmother and very sad american tv is not this good.
Do you follow Paul Blinkhorn on facebook.. omg he posts the best stuff.
oh and there are other time team related pages. RIP Mick Aston is a good one too.
Leopararouen Im an aspie and people and I do not get a long in person most usually. I tutor, and network blood donations for people with blood disorders in pakistan. long story. I take a lot of online classes, and am a book hoarder. (I have a huge library but my husband just calls it hoarding.) lol
"You don't build a bike shed like that"...got to love Phil.
Our beloved Phil has a birthday this Saturday the 25th of January. He'll be a young 70!!!! 1950 to 2020.
Me? I'm right there with you, Phil.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL !!!!!
If anyone knows where to wish him so, please do. He's been a fan fav forever.
@Charlie K Well, HBD to you as well....!!!! Have a lovely day to you when it arrives!
@Charlie K Phil is my age.
Happy Birthday Phil!
contact wessex archaeology to wish Phil
There is a Facebook group for Phil and one for Time Team...the members of the Phil Harding Appreciation society sent him a boat load of cards and such for his birthday last year(70th) through a member who happens to know someone whom knows Phil. He was very happy to recieve them. He is not active on social media at all though.
Oh boy, 50 seconds in and an episode I somehow missed over the past couple of decades. This is going to be excellent no matter what they find!
To stoned to watch??????
Stewart is a landscape reading wizard.
he looked at it a year ago..lol... told Geo-phiz what they would see ...and a year later/tada
Love Stewart's work and the subject!
No, he isn’t. He’s a twat.
Paul’s encyclopedic knowledge of pottery never ceases to amaze me.
The reality is pottery was fairly limited for centuries so the same stuff pops up again and again
Many thanks Reijer. Watching these videos has become addictive for me. For me, a series like this would have been wonderful 60 years ago when I was struggling through European History 101 courses. Brings events to life instead of merely memorizing dates and maps, then forgetting them completely after the exams were over!
Celto Loco I don't mean to be contrary... Some people learn by watching. I actually learn more by reading the information. Yes, these videos have helped bring things to 'life' more than just reading it. However, for me, I don't think this would have meant as much to me without having read all of the background details prior to watching. I have spent the last 8 years being bedridden because of my disabilities. All I've basically done is read nonfiction books about almost every period in history. I have read, on average, 3-6 books per week during that time. That is excluding the past 2 months or so, because all I've done is watch the first 15 seasons of TT. LOL BTW, thanks for the link, I intend to check that out as well!
Good thoughts for you Donna. My point above is that trying to cram a lot of events and dates into my mind so I could pass a required course was not really learning. For me anyway. Boring! Of course I was not a history major either, European History was just another of the courses required in Freshman Year of Studies.
KYIRISH1 I agree with you about the memorizing dates etc. Some of the methods used to teach history are absolutely useless! In fact, some of the things that are taught in today's public schools are downright frightening! One of the many reasons that I homeschooled my children. Now they are all well on their way to being productive members of society with valuable college degrees to boot! I'm so glad I decided to make the sacrifice for them. It wasn't easy, but it was worth every minute!
here, here!
@KYIRISH1: I couldn't agree with you more! When I studied European History in school, I hated just memorizing dates and names of historical places. Remembered them until I passed the next test and then forgot them. Now, I am in my late 60s and love history programs. My hat today is off to Mick when Sir Anthony (Tony) was teasing him about failing to document something pertaining to this dig and he admitted that when he was young, he missed it. Hope Mick is enjoying his retirement.
And at 0:23 Tony rows up in a boat that is already tied to the shore. Saves a lot of time when you have only three days.
Its tv show fyi
Every time I rewatch it, I get a good laugh from iit.
That's a picky detail we are not supposed to notice.
i didnt even notice thats hilarious nice transition shot though
"Stone the crows! Phil is off to the pub."
Brilliant! That made me really laugh out loud.
And that made my day too. Oh how often have I thaught when digging: Where is the th next pub?
Shame on you ... :D
That is an interesting comment. "A murder of crows" is a flock of crows. I don't know why. But did Phil say "Stone Of Crows"? Or "Stone The Crows" . There was a fairly recent documentary by the BBC/PBS on Crows and their use of tools.
I know Crows well. They are amazing birds with incredible memories.
@@chrisgordon5719 That's right Corvids Crows, Ravens, Jays ect ate most advanced bird species
"Stone the crows" is a garbled version of "knock the bung off the barrel" In other words, "Let's send the beer around." Not sure if this is fact, but it certainly does fit.
Love that tribute to the humble potters at the end.
Radcot is briefly mentioned in Charles Spencer's "White Ship." It simply states that Radcot was a supporter of Matilda. Matilda, however, had holed up in Oxford Castle. They were facing eminent surrender to Stephen's forces and Matilda escaped with the help of 3-4 of her most loyal knights who lowered down the side of the castle wrapped in a white bedsheet, good camouflage as it was near Christmas.
it always amazes me what knowledge all the people have. to be shown a pice of - something - and be able to tell what it was, waht it looked like and when it was - made -. i love to watch these - old - episodes of Time Team.
I been watching these youtube videos for a few weeks now, love what yall do, and gotta say, getting the local kids involved is awesome.
Absolutely stunning! Ready for the King’s visit
The end of this episode is the reason I have watched all episodes. Brining fun real history to the history makers....all of us.
"You've got to remember the situation in 1142". What a lovely line, unselfconsciously uttered by an Oxford academic, for whom it probably is as familiar as last week.
Traction trebuchets like the one shown would often have someone hooked on to the end of the beam until the moment of release, to add the spring energy stored to the team's pull to the projectile.
Ha-a! Well spotted! They dont want to be so rude as to (a) suggest someone might not know and (b) to seem to be lecturing. Sometimes I've done this when lecturing about Human physiology. "OF course you know that...:
I've seen a few trebuchet videos here on YT, but not one powered by people hauling on ropes. I can't think they would have had as much power as those using stone weighted buckets -- or would they?
@@Lucius1958 Look for "traction trebuchet" - there are certainly videos here. I don't know of a thorough comparison, but I've seen quite a modest setup hurling bowling balls a considerable distance. It depends on the team, but the rate of fire's probably much higher than one that has to be cranked back. (One mediaevel battle was won by a side with women working a t-t, to the greater shame of the losing side. :-)* )
How have I never seen this one before? Magnificent.
Another brilliant episode.
Tnx for the video Reijer
I'm so glad I found out about this series -- Tony Robinson is the Carl Sagan of British archaeology. And I'm embarrassed at how much I loved how bloodthirsty the children were at the end! 🤣
You wish your children well not how they have to live, just that they do😊
Thank you for putting this show on. 💜
I absolutely love Stewart Ainsworth. I think he is so sweet and humble and kind. Definitely Keen to not be the center of attention. So laid back. Don't know why they got rid of him. Dumb move time team.
Many of those decisions were made by the Producers as a cost cutting measure. In the first few shows, they didn't even dig. It cost a lot of money to dig with excavators and then return everything to the pristine condition it was in before you started.
Chris Gordon ....sad, but true. Nobody complained when they made plenty of money with the commercials, did they ?
If I was the producer I would have sacked him too. He relies too heavily on old maps and plans. As an architect things very rarely get built per plans and to rely on a 12th century plan without a scale or any reliable survey technique is foolish at best but Stewart digs in his heals and isn’t flexible to allow other theories. He’s wrong 80% of the time and has the team always going down rabbit holes. He may be a nice guy but he doesn’t appear to be very professional. I just fast forward past his parts. Oh, and he never ever helps dig. All of the others, pregnant women and even pottery specialist, pitch in but Stewart never does. In the 200 or so episodes he is never filmed picking up a trowel or shovel.
@@RonHei
Gasp! His parts are some pf my favourites! The geographical analysis of places and his knowledge of "lumps and bumps"... Just love it!
@@RonHei dúh that's the whole idea, to have different perspectives. And he doesn't dig, because he is not trained in that . He could do some rough shoveling, but that's not needed they have enough manpower (volunteers) for that. He also is not wrong 80% of the time, I have binged watched a lot of episodes in the past weeks because of illness and I would say in about 50% of the cases he brings something useful to the project.
I love it when they include young children into their projects.
yes recreating human sacrifices is important!
Saturday.2/15/2020. beautiful people and show. two of the greatest guyz on this show, havin a bit of fun!! luv it!! John with his car key for his pointer!
Mick,, what a beautiful man. the artist,, ( forget his name ) , what a talent to have! a wonderful video! just sayin
Ahh, the late Victor Ambrus. Died 10th Feb this year aged 85. Check out various obituaries and the Wikipedia pages on him. Developed his drawing skills from a very young age and continued living in strife torn Hungary until eventually able to emigrate to UK. A gift to us all.
I now can say, I wish I would have spent my time in getting an archaeology degree insead of a pre law. I am so totally drawn to Time Team and when you realize they only have 3 days to do their dig, I think they are amazing. Now I want to visit archaeological dig sites (via the internet) all over the world.
I did get an archaeology degree! Sadly its really hard to get full time work in the field as its very seasonal so like most of my course mates im doing something else!
They have 3 days because the show is written that way to add excitement .
@@ianrutherford878 they only had three days because of budget. The producers of this show were notoriously cheap and frugal.
It's never to late to get a trowel in some dirt. Let alone I'm sure some archeological sites could use someone with your knowledge to help Preserve sites. So much of our history is just being bulldozed in the name of progress.
@@bigbensarrowheadchannel2739they had 3 days because they all had day jobs. These were filmed over the weekends.
Excellent history show. I’ve enjoyed each episode I’ve watched.
Tony: "If you could live your life again..."
Mick: "Oh, tell me about it."
So sad. Poor Mick died last year.
So sad to hear this! What a scholar and gentleman!

Why poor? He had a very full life, some health problems and a quick death from a brain hemmerij (I can't spell it)There's a fascinating account of his life, mainly his career, but not exclusively among the google results.

Bottom lands, excuse the french Jesus Chrsit man how somebody can manipulate a comment of thank you socall the cops, do what ever you think you need to do! Im a retired PIG you like that, I have no idea how You know, how all this worlks , i was a homicide detective, so if you have a beef dont screw with me, if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything God in all the years this is the first time I was slapped for just saying thank you! Im almost hoping my cancer kills me so i can come back and see you cast the first stone, You are the very fist person i have ever read saying something like this, I am 60 , a rocker, Joanie Larkins childhood friend, and dont know much about all the technicalities of the internet. So if I idie I wanna come back and sit next to you to see what perfect really is! You know they give my meds that give me full menopause and PMS to slow the cancer, would you do me a favor and not comment on my thank yous ever ever again. Im trying to have my last days not fencing with people like you! God I wanna come back and just be your companion for eternity s I can learn how not to be so stupid on the internet Please show me how! Why am I not seeing four hundred comments saying whoever posted this is a thief or whatever, If you take a picture off pinterest , its not yours, you must have stolen it, I have put this documentary on my likes so I must have stolen it too. I have been a diplomat all my life byt you oissed me off I said thank you Father God forgive me, but if you have irreparable proof that this was wrong, how do you know the person who posted even knew they did something wrong. You need intent and knowledge , when you prove that against a person then report them but all I am going to say is Merry Christmas! Now screw me with that now too of how offensive I am by saying it! Maybe I'll just write a song and record it, and say what i please, just to say it. If it offends, and i have no proof beyond a shadow of a doubt,I'll just saY It anyway because I can hide behind a keyboard and not face the person i just insulted face to face! I really hate it when people who can't just keep their negativity to themselves to themselves. If you have a beef then address it , dont F with a guy who said thank you You seem like a bigger moron thaan me right now! If you have proof this person knew it was theft then tell somebody I didn't know that and if so then everybody posting on the internet has been a thief, somehow, unless it all says public domain, Instead of thank you should i close out to everybody and say screw you! You prove that person is a thief and if you can't, then apologize to them! I had a person write how he thought a friend of mine looked like a truck ran over her face then had the stupidity to say I wasn't trying to hurt her feelings. She is a celebrity that ha given her life to entertainment then some dumbass throws that in. I even said when i next see her, anything else you want me to pass on to her form you! I didnt appreciate your cheap shot to me, as simple as what we both said as that was degrading, insulting and humiliating. I said to the guy, yeah you were trying to insult her and her family and friends see this. yeah so please apologize if you didn't mean it but still hurt her. her family sees it she sees it and her friends see it He could not apologize. Apologize to me for making jest at my ignorance. You won't do that either! He without sin fire the first stone! I have no idea, so why dont you write a thesis now so i can understand exactly what this person did and if this person hd no intent nor knowledge of wrong doing it is not theft until that is proven. God you pissed me off! Good will to men, the season to be jolly and to give and to think of others, so please write down everything so i can understand the who what where how why and when of it! Thank you , from the dumbass that has no clue ME obviously
You're laughing at me for you being a moron Bravo! and if you can spell I dont know your initials there so say it straight out So I thought you were going to explain professor how this person is a thief. Maybe your laugh out loud wont be so loud if he or she sues you for written liable.I think I am dying and you laugh at me, I pray for you because somebody else is seeing this too. Ihope you feel like the cocok of the walk Alot of people will think i am long winded which i am, but they will really think something very different of you! Guarantee it!
I pray for you! You do realize others see you laughing at somebody who is dying. I ain't going to forget either will they! So how is the person a thief?
@@joaniejett7189 The comments that you are commenting on have been removed. And, I'm glad they have. Apparently, the bozo that wrote the comments didn't mind watching the so-called "stolen" videos he/she was bitching about. I applaud your comeback to what must have been a disgusting comment. And then, later, to laugh at your illness is beyond rude.
It's amazing what people will say to others on the internet that they would never say to a person's face because if it was said to the person's face, the person's fist might come out to play with the rude person's face. The internet has been a big boon for research and entertainment, but at the same time, it has been the downfall of morals and good behavior. I'm 56 years old and when I was growing up I was taught to be polite to everybody. I'm still polite to everybody I meet. I get some really strange looks from people because of that.
I'm sorry to hear about the cancer. I hope and pray that you are and will continue to get better. BTW, you're not the only long-winded person. I get mine natually from my mother's side of the family.
Thanks again for telling off that brat. It was definitely needed. So are the prayers you would say for him/her. God bless you.
*"Time Team's" greatest energies of success as a Show were:*
▪ Folks largely enjoy Human History Archaeology,
▪ The show followed a consistent rhythm of procedure and maintained a high energy (that beat was set by Tony"s Narration and his high energy + Film & Tech Production Excellence)
▪ *They established a "Real Team of Personalities",* particularly:
Tony, Mick, Phil, John, Stewart, Matt, Bridgette, Victor, (the Digger Driver, 8an Barclay) (Carenza earlier), that improved with the addition of H(elen, Rakshar, and Johnathon), and although Johnathon wasn't on as many of the Shows, *these 3 were clearly perfect choices to it's Highest Perfection* and enduring potential, beyond the ending of the Series.
When one has the public info on the details of season that resulted in its ending, it raises the Q: *"What the hell was the "Producer thinking?"*
It is a "given" in TV Series that: *One avoids making "replacements" to an already established and $uccessful cast.*
...and even w/o knowing this rule of thumb, any regular viewer would have in mind to ask:
"Why would the Producer make such an (unintelligent) decision?"
... Hard to not get personal, (and I don't intend to be judging nor rude), its hard to avoid judging, but ya have to just think:
*"Was there was an overwhelming degree is stupidity involved here!?!"*
...and I hope that individual regains their mind.
*Two of the focal people, both extremely qualified and extremely well liked by the Viewer base, Helen and Stewart, and then the decision causing one of the 3 Key Figures (Tony, Mick, Phil) Mick, in such diress that he had to object and leave the Show.*
Even if it had been at the 10 year mark, the decision would have caused a way too early end.
Note: this is based strictly on the info as reported in Media and my having had a related degree and experience in the Business of: Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising, Journal8sm, Stage and TV/Entertainment, Ownership, Production, and Management.
I'm also baffeled why they didn't make the Show available in the USA Market, they would have seen, Conservatively, a minimum of 3 times added Profits.
Helen and Stewart were such strong values to the Show. I am consciously avoiding making comments regarding the replacement subject because, although it was so obviously not a wise choice, it is unfair to judge individuals whom otherwise could have possibly been alternatives.
*(Truly a situation that had no reason to have ever been.)*
Focus on the Positive:
Thank goodness there's been a generous sharing of this Show-series, to have the vast positive enjoyment of focus, for the Public and all involved.
Eternal Positive Energies thoughts and blessings for Mick Aston, Ian Barclay, and Artist, Victor Anbrus.
What fabulous Successes and with Continued Enjoyment.
Truly appreciating all the "Work-n-Digginh". 💯
😘
the new Time Team has the most breathy and low energy presenter. I do hope Tim calls James May to fill in.
Thank you! I watched every episode... Outstanding!
He has about 25 years on me, and he is in far better shape. I absolutely adore this man. He's well spoken, funny as hell, intelligent without any hint of arrogance, etc. etc. They just don't make 'em like Tony much anymore...
It’s worth watching these programs are tremendous
Ah, I love these guys! Mick's affability, Stewart'sexpressive hands, and Phil- well, he's just the cat's meow :)
I'd love to depart from my cold and snowy Canadian winter to walk on that beautiful green grass in my bare feet.
Stewart makes my nerdy little map loving heart happy!! I'd love to see him have like a special where we just got to watch his process. So methodical!!
I had been reading the novels Cadfael Chronicles by Ellis Peters which is set during the feud between King Stephan and Empress Matilda. Watching this episode let’s me visualize the story in context of the surrounding landscape!
Great site, great episode!
The field is here:
51°41'41.4"N 1°35'22.4"W
The regrown grass hides all the trenches though.
Awesome. Fabulous episode
"Children, today we are going to make severed heads. Does any one know what a severed head is? Michael."
"That is a head that has been cut off miss."
"Very good. Now in the middle ages soldiers used to cut the head off of people and shoot them into castles using machines like those on page 42 of your text books. Why do you think people did that?"
"To scare the people inside the castle?"
"Very good. The heads would be of their friends and it would make the people inside cry and want to give up. Now take your materials and glue and make a head of a dead man."
If I'm not mistaken playing with severed heads is how golf was invented.
It's England and Scotland and Wales ; all you need to do is go out in a field with a little shovel and the kiddies can simply dig up a Skull with sword jack marks- Scottie or Brythonic , Roman, Saxon, viking or Norman
😂😂❤
I LOVE the Monty Python battle scenes.
Out of all possible phrases that could be spoken on this show, *"we're going to use a very dangerous grapefruit"* would probably be the last one the hearing of which I would put my money on xD
A castle built in the middle of a swamp? You've uncovered that castle from The Holy Grail!
Nice to see Tony, Phil Harding, Mik Aston, etc.
That's a hell of a tan Mick has, in all of these episodes lots of people look sunburned. I miss him, he was really cool.
His tan has definitely faded by now...
Refreshing to see the sun in this episode!
Just love this show!
Stephan and Matilda civil war sites was a surprise/common element. I think there were 3 episodes that touched on this period.
I would just love to have a nice tower house like that. Apparently Ireland was thick with them at one time and there are still quite a few.
If you promise not to alter the basic structure or change whatever is left, from an archeological standpoint, you can purchase a towerhouse and live in it. It must be quite a architectural problem to make it livable without changing whatever ruin is there.
43:50 Gothmog: "Fear. The city's rife with it. Let us... ease their pain. Release the prisoners." (cue catapults firing)
And then he dodges the return fire after ordering everyone else to stay in their place. :-)
Love this series! 😎👍

I would love to have gone on digs with time team. I have had good fortune and at 66 I should look into volunteering on a dig. I plan on going to a hang gliding school it this general area in the spring. Kevin from sunny Mexico.
So you wanted to go from a dig in the ground to a splat?????
Hope it an the rest works out for you .😊
The kids building papier mache heads for the trebuchet launcher is one of the most hilarious moments on time team for sure.

Almost a Monty Python and Holy Grail moment where the historian is explaining the background for the scene and he gets cut down.

21:24 The hell!? "Well...tssumm robostle ballastle jyugg-they, native upon the Oxfordshire buggy-n-chibarress." It's like he stroked out for a moment. I've never had a problem understanding these guys, but that sentence reminds me of a boy I met on a cruise to the Bahamas when we were both about twelve years old, in '92. He was from Liverpool and we became fast friends, running all over the ship, playing basketball on deck at night, accessing off limits areas below deck, being boys. But about half the time he said something to me I had to ask him to repeat it because it sounded to me like, " Well...tssumm robostle ballastle jyugg-they, native upon the Oxfordshire buggy-n-chibarress.". I was able to understand him pretty normally by the time we had to part ways, of course.
That's funny, I looked him up and Paul Blinkhorn is from....Liverpool. Whiston, properly, but right outside the Liverpool area.
You're right Steve. They want us to sit through 15/20 minutes of adverts without being able to fast foward through them like we did on our old video tapes.

The “surprise” that the Norman castle would have been destroyed so early is ludicrous. It’s well known that Henry II pulled down a very large number of castles and fortifications during the early part of his reign.
Its a shame as castles look so pretty. They could have at least left a few nice ruined bits for us to look at, like they did at other castles and abbeys, which are good for the economy and days out with the kids. Too many historical people were selfish and simply gave no thought for the future. Punchline... Good job nearly all humans today are not so short sighted and make sacrifices to preserve things of great importance. Arrfff arrfff.
Wrong episode label.
This is S16-E07, but that episode is about Radcot. The Caerwent Episode is S16 E04.
Thanks for these anyway. Watching the ones I've missed as quickly as I can before the inevitable take-down notice. ;)
What is that wonderful dance tune at 6:20? Does anyone know?
Just curious, how many of these sites have been reburied after yall leave ? and how many have gone on to be fully exposed and preserved ? How about an episode featuring those that have been worked to full exposure after yall leave ?

Good lord, he is a actor! Of course the scene is staged!
I always wonder what happens to the sites after three days? Do the team just leave, does someone else continue the work or does someone fill it all in again? Does anybody know please?
I can’t answer fully beyond saying that I know their sites are remediated after they leave.
3.8 meters = 12.4671916 feet Now that is a THICK WALL
i just found this on youtube, and how refreshing to hear people argue civilly and intelligently and accomplish amazing things. It's refreshing and fascinating.
For those of us in America that are Metrically deficient, I just wound it off t over 12 feet. meter being 3' + about three inches.
Most of those decimal places are unnecessary.3.8 m is an eyeball average of an irregular surfaced wall from a tape-measure.He didn't say it is 3.8000000 m thick.About 12'6'' is what you'd say.
The 3 meter thickness says "foundation wall". Higher up walls would be more like 1 meter thick.
The Cromwell civil war really destroyed a lot of heritage sites. Castles were just no match for gunpowder.
You have to remember that castles and fortified manors held by the opposition were often “slighted” by the victors.
Geography rules this site. Everyone saw its strategic value.
Raksha is super cute 😍 💕
🤮
I feel it safe to say that there isn't much civility in civil war...!!
I love Raksha.

"It's 4 meters thick! you don't build a Bikeshed like this!" Oh Phil. You've obviously never seen the apocalytically bombproof "temporary" things a Friend of mine used to build.... The use of 20cm screws for 4cm Boards is only one of those "It needs to be sturdy" and "It'll not be me anymore to take it down again" Things 😵😵😵
For a bike shed?????😮
@@PaulMahon-w2b yep. because it needs to hold up in all weather a few months...
(It still stands today, 20years later, hasn't moved a cm and will likely never be taken down, even it was "just temporary")
I have read that every castle had a water well inside for use during a siege. I’m curious why TimeTeam doesn’t find more wells?
At the end of the Anarchy it was decided that the 'illegal' sites of both followers that were built up during the battles would be destroyed. This may have been one of those sites.
As soon as I heard, you say you thought, it might be evidence of the first cement or stone, Norman castle, my thoughts were the Romans were there first the Normans came in and didn’t use the cement built their own…
I think they relearning the tech to do that they are mentioning.
Never been have been able to lose that, but make beautiful pot
"There is nothing in this tench, Phil!" - "Oh, there is, Tony, its just the resolution is too bad." 😕
Love the goblet
Throughout the TIME TEAM series, my favorites were: Mick, Phil and Stewart.
I don't understand how Tony is now: Sir Tony.
When the shoots were finished did they fill in all these holes and replant all the flower beds they destroyed?
That WOULD be nice.
One rock is a rock, two rocks is a wall, three rocks is a Roman village
Excellent.
Yay,Normans! Thanks RZ!
Love Time Team
Hi can somebody tell me what happened to Karen?
To me. She was an anchor of the show. Thank you
You mean Carenza? Not positive, but I believe she went back to academia after she was misdiagnosed with breast cancer and had a radical double mastectomy, which turned out to be totally unnecessary because she didn't have cancer. It was about this time that she disappears and Helen Geake becomes a prominent member of the team. Alice Roberts left as well, again, to pursue an academic career, I think.
Look up Carenza on Facebook. Very accomplished woman. And Helen Geake is in Wikipedia.
@@johnrinehart2074 alice roberts is a major presenter herself now. Lots of great documentaries including the brilliant "digging for britain" series. Im sure they are about somewhere on here

@@andy-the-gardener Yep.
Probably mentioned below but my immediate thought on the knife blade was "that's a seax"
might hit the like button if you would play the entire show. think about it
A squabble between royal siblings for control of the hoi poloi doesn't sound particularly anarchic.
it was more than a squabble . Google it.
Perhaps a little facetious calling it a squabble, although their arguments rarely put them in harms way. They saved that for the masses.
Since anarchism is a doctrine advocating the abolition of government and its replacement by a social system based on voluntary co-operation, describing an argument to determine who will control the masses as 'the anarchy' may well be institutionalised but it's wrong.
I think in this context, anarchy could be taken to mean lack of government. King Stephen and the Empress Matilda were fighting for the English crown, in fact a civil war so rather more than a squabble.
That's certainly how they are using the word in this context. My point is, it's the wrong use of the word. It was a civil war to determine who was going to control the masses which couldn't be further from the actual meaning of anarchy.
The word has been institutionalised, quite wrongly, to mean disorder and destruction by an establishment who can't conceive of an anarchic system because it wouldn't have them running it.
Do excuse my facetiousness but, in fact, the vast majority of wars are squabbles between individuals for power where they rarely put themselves in harm's way. They leave that to the masses.
Google it - the time period is called The Anarchy, whether or not historians of the time are using your definition. To the people affected, it felt like anarchy. The lack of central government resulted in a number of Lords seizing local power and becoming something like robber barons. As to personal harm, Stephen actually had Mathilda in his clutches a couple of times - she was in mortal danger - but he always let her go.
The Tower was built by the Conqueror, that is not anything like a bailey...wouldn't this be exactly what they would build?
I suspect John Gator spends a lot more time shaking his head than we might think, lol.
