I like Mick's line," It's too early for these cerebral activities. Get me a coffee"
And he says, “I’m pondering as I’m sitting here, Phil.” What a quick wit!
I love the way Phil opens deep ditches, I have been a plumber for the majority of my life and am aware of others who died in a ditch that was opened in an unsafe manner. A tip of my hat to the whole crew.
Mick Aston what a man I would have liked to meet him but alas I learned about time team last year by accident I am just so happy to have found the series. I definitely wish this was promoted more especially in today's age as it is intellectually powerful as the Time Team consistently shows us how to build theories and how to question and work with opposing theories and most importantly it shows people how one can disagree and still be great mates and have a pint together at the end. And that just scratches the surface it has provided plenty of unique insights on history that I would not have learned about in any other way (I love history as a hobby), and archeology in general is not often talked about so to get some insight on the process is amazing. I really was sad to find out that this fantastic series ended, I hope one day the world will get another team like Time Team except one that does archeology like this around the globe how amazing would that be!
They are hoping to revive the series via Patreon. Go to the Time Team Official youtube channel for details.
It's quite sad that Mick's departure from the series was acrimonious. The producers decided to go in a "more polished" direction (subtext - hire pretty cohosts), and Mick felt very strongly that they were dumbing down the science, and degrading a show he dedicated so many years to. He died just over one year after leaving the show.
@@MrVvulf (subtext - hire pretty cohosts),Yes MRVvulf, and not only pretty, but with a politically correct agenda as well. My sympathy is with Mick.
@@carolinebarnes6832 Indeed.
@@MrVvulf Carenza and Helen are real archeologists and Raksha, not just pretty faces. A world of difference between them and a pretty face that is just a front for the camera. Tony is the only front for the camera that is needed, and his real interest in archeology shines through. He is not just delivering his lines. Do these producers and writers think that we have to be manipulated and entertained with these little show biz tricks? The popularity of this show over almost 2 decades prove that we do not, the real thing is more than enough.
And we can do without the little reminders that it is only the peasants that suffer, give it a rest for pete's sake.
I absolutely love the British dry sense of humor!! These folks were definitely at the pinnacle of it. Love this show.
Tony "We don't know what they were doing here". 2 seconds before: Paul "they were drinking beer". about nails it
Watching from Castle Hill, New South Wales, Australia!
I've binge watched nearly every one of these episodes. Can't get enough of this kind of education. Learning about how our ancestors lived just a few hundred years ago. Amazing.
I bet when those boys were growing up they got crazy excited every time it started to snow. Those hills are perfect for sledding.
they've only ever seen snow on skiing holidays to the Alps
Snow in Somerset? That would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
@@Butchinthewaikato quite the excitement then :D
I don't know who I am, I don’t know why I'm here, All I know is that I must watch every Time Team episode ever made.
Good lad 💪😁
Yeah, pretty much… 🦴🏺🍺
These shows are addicting.
Thanks again!!
Rainy afternoon here, so I’m spending it with some pseudo family, Tony and his mates ! Keep posting and I’ll keep watching, I love this show 💕😘
what is crazy, the story of a castle that was never completed, almost 1000 years ago, is still being told in the area
That's not that unusual - If you look at that hill, it sort of inspires people to think that it's an ideal place for a castle, so the speculation about it is constantly refreshed by the next generation of Boys imagining the castle up there - I got a similar situation in my little home town in Austria, we also got a hill like that, and at one point there actually was a small castle there until it was demolished and turned into a Church like 500 years ago, but the stories about the castle still live on
Head to the nearby Dinnington Docks if you want further local stories and the site of one of the Roman TT digs
Good resolution filming with beautiful native English bluebells :) excellent banter and behaving weather!
"I'm pondering as I sit here Phil"... RIP Mick!
I have ancestors from Crewkerne so it is nice to see what their homeland looks like. Thanks!
That visual how the castle would have looked was really touching! All this effort and hope that went into it! The breaking of that one stone an it's transport made this so tangible! Wonderful!
thank you.Once again. Is it possible for you to upload the specials? Keep the episodes coming frequently. I watch them all
Mick; i hope you can look down and see all the new people enjoying your work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heyyyy! It's good to see Alex on an episode!
Looking back at these episodes Alex and Mary Anne got a rough deal at the time, because they weren't Stuart etc...
Hills like that are so beautiful, I'm in the US but I've been obsessed with those sort of hills ever since I saw Watership Down when I was young. Someday I'd like to go to the UK and visit a few, especially the real Watership Down.
One hill. That sort of hill. Two differing hills. Those sorts of hills.
@@judeirwin2222 Rude.
I like the pun " there should have been a BIT more evidence", when talking about knites horses.
0:25 _"No real reason why a castle should be here"_ 0:53 Is it not blatantly obvious?
Watch John struggling to the top and Tony even claims "it will take 3 days just to get up there."
I bet Phil knows exactly why. He seems to be enjoying the trek (no doubt teasing John is half the fun).
i find it amazing how people/places/ events can just disappear in history. temporary or not, those people trusted that structure for their safety. the probably had some good times in there. definitely some dramatic times. and now 800 years later. we are not even sure what was there. i find that really sad.
"Mead?! Is there nothing else?!" I agree Phil, a proper ale would be preferred.
Just look at Phil's face when he takes a sip of the mead. Epic. :)
I would have liked to see Stewart analyse the landscape in this episode. Thankyou for the uploads!
(and not a fan of the new "rock music" backing! I much preferred the original Time Team soundtrack...)
ah, the tradesman's entrance. Tony's innuendos are classic.
Nice...🤗
Thank you
Fascinating - the computer center seems to be in a ger (a round mongolian tent, sometimes called a yurt). I camped in one of them for years - very comfortable, and spacious.
always enjoy these castle digs. a surprising number - look up the people involved - in this case - baldwin de redviers - and - 25th great-grandfather.
My favourite time team digs are always the prehistoric and Anglo Saxon ones! Probably because of the mysteries that surround those time periods
Thank you.
i wouldn't mind being part of the team, it would be so much fun, to spite the hard work.
Irish and England. Local names seem very descriptive
They should have got a Mr. Castle and a Ms. Hill involved.
I can understand the desire to build something extra into the series as some previous episodes must have been a producer's nightmare when there was little found or the weather hampered the archaeology, but I regret to say, the revamped format went too far into being top heavy with distractions from what the series was always about - archaeology. Thus I can see why some familiar faces left, while others may rightly have felt disgruntled after being relegated to side show status. Thankfully the old format is back via Patreon, and with some familiar faces too. What's perhaps most comforting to me is that many of those who rose to prominence over the Time Team years (e.g. Raksha, Matt, & Brigid) have gone on to great things, but what would we give for a reunion?
It's Paul 'Blink'n' Blinkhorn!
Was here October 2020
It turns out it was a stage built for the Hartnoll brothers who entertained early festival goers on their way to Glastonbury.
Not the hat!! I hope they got it back!
Considering the roads, and the transportation methods of the time, I'd love for someone to research just how they transported (over land) such flimsy, thin-walled large jugs of water, beer, etc. without most of them breaking.
You have to remember that the geographics of the land has moved.
Pack them in straw.
Maybe there were still some good Roman roads to use too?
Over longer distances they'd probably used Barrels, the jugs were probably more in domnestic "short distance" use
@@ErnestoBrausewind Do we have evidence of barrel making? Barrels take metal rings to hold them together, and I have yet to watch a Time Team discussing all the barrel bands they have found.
Remarkable architecture..! Where is it... is it open as museum?
Another wonderful dig site! Love them all.
Alex from Wartime Farm! And Guidilon!
Great episode! If only we had stuff like this in Florida...
Right? And as far as hills go, I think if you wanted to get a view from the top like that you'd have to go to Bok Tower and that might not even be close tho... Florida is so flat...
@@PaigeDWinter have you ever been to Florida? Not Daytona or Miami, but places like Ocala, Clermont, or Monteverde? Florida is far from flat.
@@SkunkApe407 I've been living in the Space Coast area since 03. I've been up near Ocala once but it didn't seem all that mountainous. I'm from the Northeast originally. So with the exception of places like, Bok Tower, Florida is very flat to me.
@@SkunkApe407 Florida is flat to people who live in actual Mountains. I looked up images of those areas and can safely say your molehills have NOTHING on Vermont's majestic mountains.
@@vermontvampyre yeah, and Vermont is a frozen wasteland to us who actually know what "warmth" feels like. I also get to go to the beach on Christmas and I also happen to live in the middle of the largest concentration of natural artesian springs on the continent. When was the last time you ate a mango or banana that grew in your your own yard? When was the last time you went surfing? How about deep sea fishing? Oh, and then there's the fact that EVERYONE wants to retire down here, NOT in your arctic borehole. Nice try sunshine, but I'm quite happy living at the north end of the Caribbean as opposed to the armpit of Canada.
Is it possible they gave up on building it if they could not secure a water source in the well?
If there was pottery from several centuries, they propably finished the wooden fort, but didn't finnish the stone keep.
Water source and supply is the very first step before a project commences, note the untidy base of the foundation. Mortar mix needs plenty of water on hand at all times. As Tony noted toward the end, the owners of the project ran out of money and scrubbed the project of building the castle. JMO
...where the farmers are more posh than the archeologists...
I used to fly hot air balloons from the foot of this!
Seems like Fort Apache, when they get into it!
Would you consider extending your day limit up to 5 days? There's so much more to do when you quit. Please
This show is from 2012. I agree with you, but no point in suggesting now. :)
@@Psychlist1972 Considering Time Team is returning in 2021 I would disagree. The problem with extending the dig time to 5 days means each site will cost a lot more money which has to come from somewhere.
@@Grievous- I was also under the impression most of the crew were academics so they had classes during the week and dig over the weekend.
@@SEAZNDragon Yeah that's right.
I've always wondered what happens to the site when they leave.
Woot!
walking the magnificent horse 10 miles .... ..... not something many can say they have done recently
Since these are all -old - episodes, it could have been nice to see, even a 3 minute clip shot by a local -stringer- ,waht had happened to the features TT dug up in those 3 days.
Was everything closed again?
did a local archeological society dig any further?
and special when the dig was o na -listed place- what did English Heritage do about it...
Well Jurts are basically the best temporary houses there are, aren't they?! And the british have that round house thing, basically every third word in this series is "roundhouse".
Weould be a fantastic Brand now I come to think of it - "Roundhouse", and a geofizz style logo, a C with a dot in the middle.
Roman Signal Tower?
Thank you so much for posting these episodes, but way too many ads. Unfortunate and really annoying!
If you are that annoyed by the ads, there are these little things out there now called ad blockers, download one. Either that or don't complain. These channels are posting these things for us to watch free of charge, monetizing to get ads on the videos helps them make some money from their efforts, also I believe these high quality copies are posted by people that paid for the license to post, so they want to make some money from it, and there is not a thing wrong with that.
After nearly two decades with Tony as ‘Dr Watson’ asking all the silly questions what made the producers decide they needed another?
17:50 Hammer throw
I grew up not far from there. Used to work and go to pubs in Crewkerne. Funny hearing everyone pronouncing 'Crewkerne' wrong (it's 'Crook-urn' not 'Crew-kurn'). I'm sure the side-hosts killed the series off. Both of them were dingbats, and poor Mick - the actual expert - doesn't get much of a look in.
I wonder who used the hill first to scout out the nearest pub?
At 4:00 Mick seems just a little impatient with this slick and insolent puppy who has been foisted off on him. Or maybe I'm just projecting.
@thomasbell7033
I think you’re projecting, I don’t see that impatience at all.
@@Brinta3I saw your comment and watched that time stamp again. I honestly don't know what made me post that. It seems like a fairly scripted passage with neutral delivery. But yeah, I resent these two from Season 19. And I didn't even discover TT until COVID, so I came by my resentment organically. That is, I was not aware of the resentment of them by the original fans of the show circa 2012.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Let’s hope micks family, Phil and the gang are finally paid for their work with these videos
This one is giving me anxiety and Ive seen every time team twice. Is there new music added?
There's a Castle Hill in Cambridge.
Also in Coalville, Leics.
Mead is god’s nectar.
Hello to the Time Team all our so many times Great Parents they were all Kings and Queens of England going all the way back to the years of 534AD.🥇🇦🇺🦘⚜️👑⚜️🏴🇬🇧
You can see how the series was in decline in this season. With Tony, Alex, and Mary Anne it was like three commentators and very little trench discussion and sense of discovery.
Why do you only do 3 days?
It seems like you could find so much more, with time.
Google it, that question has been asked and answered a thousand times already.
Mick was a true Brit
As all lightly men are of course
Unless there was water up there. or it rained every day, the place would be indefensible for long.
Many hill have natural springs, and rain falls on hills as well as flatlands. From there it has to filter down, so wells can be dug. “Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water...”
Many hills.
The ‘digs’ were done over only 3 days because everyone has/had a regular job during the week.
Ah, are there any mew episodes? I havent watched this channel for years bc it seemed to be essentially reruns
The last season was originally broadcast in 2013, as far as I know.
It is a treasure chest.
Ponder as I sit here
Of all the 22 seasons of this show you have to keep picking the same ones as one Timeline!?
"The Irish's." That's a bit "on the nose," isn't it? =)
why three days?
Great episode ! Everyone in great form. Thanks {Anthropologist] Mary-Ann Ochota for your informative and well-written book ‘Hidden Histories’, by the way !
This is the worst season of TT.
Good thing is that the worst of Time Team is still enjoyable enough to watch.
Have you seen the size of that hill? I think there was a Celtic fort on that hill right underneath the unfinished castle. Not only a fort but possibly a full city!
Isn't the UK gorgeous? I'm beginning to understand why England is such an honored island. Add the Monarchy and it is fabulous! Thanks you TT!
I think you’ll find, if you consult a map, that this island contains several countries, not just England. Don’t go to Wales or Scotland and start talking about how beautiful their area of England is, or you may go home with a garden hoe or broom handle jammed three feet up your backside.
That was a fun one. I feel bad for Mary Ann, I think she gets a bad rap.
As did Alex at the time, because he wasn't Stuart..
ugh hated the other host they tried to shove in the show.
26:0
Knightly
initial thought. it's a fucking motte and bailey. They put them ontop of every hill on that island. They would have built them on anthills if they could find willing laborers.
Now what was the reason for adding the "female host"?
When the Advertising-Marketing guys begin "dress-up" an already successful show, there's always a classic college of the Freshman year showing and the show can "lose its frequency".
Not recommended if it isn't justified.
Journalism/PR/Marketing is 1 of my degrees. And 30 years post grad ... I recognize the "Juniors" approach.
I love Time Team.... But seriously... A DAMN COMMERCIAL EVERY 3 MINUTES???? Just as much commercial time as program time.
Way too many commercials!
Yeah, blame youtube.
Because of the pandemic/ economic stagnation and regression RUclips has less paying partners so they have to pump the number of ads up to make money.
Google : Torch browser
@@SonsOfLorgar No, they can set the number of ads.
@@DavidM2002 Being a small time RUclipsr I am very willing to have a reasonable ads.
When Time Team started downhill by adding Mary Ann.
Well maybe , but it wasn't her fault.
Crikey. Marianne has enough teeth for the whole crew. She could double as a human JCB.
Rudeness shows your class.
Who is that unwanted female?
Heavy duty FLUF-- someone in the network HQ wife or something else
Rudeness shows your class. Get off the bandwagon.
@@albertfat907.. Why don't you Google her then apologize.
TimeTeam really went down the toilet when they felt the need to add "representation". Just focus on the archaeology and leave the social politics out of it FFS.
I can’t be the only one who’s dumbstruck by Mary Ann? Brains, seems to be a sweetheart AND is stunningly beautiful! 😋
What they call a garden is not what I call a garden.
WHAT UP WITH PEOPLE ON THAT TOWN WITH THEIR SURNAMES....ONE FAMILY SURENAME IS IRISH..JUST IRISH AND THEN AT THE QUARRY GENTLEMEN SURNAME IS JUST 'ENGLISH'...LMAO
great show of worthless ads with a few tie-bits of what might have been a rather interesting program
So enjoyed these shows for years. The history of the Mother Country is so fascinating. Then Mr Robinson decided to lecture us barbarians in the US on our politics. A low class and thoughtless act. Im sure the fine people of Britain would appreciate folks from America lecturing them on the Royalty, or any part of how their Country SHOULD be run. Like we could possibly understand the situation without actually living it. I expected better of a seemingly intelligent man representing a great Country.
Well unfortunately the British (and most Europeans in general) are quite prideful. Also some British come over to the US to actually praise our system because it is one of the few in the world that is not Parilimentary and doesn't have the issues that a Parliamentry system has. I would say that our biggest weakness is letting the Executive Branch legislate and letting the Courts legislate and of course, lacking certain broad based ideals that cement civilization itself. We need a Constitutional Convention to fix these structural issues.
Stop faffling around
*cringe* a season 19 episode *clicks away to something else*
?? Why, whatever is wrong with season 19? Forgive me, I’m not a Brit so I am stumbling on this show bc of my interest in history and archeology.
@@jessicaclakley3691 Mary Ann drew a lot of criticism. I've always thought of such things as deep resentment and angst against, well, against the "other". Mary Ann is fine, after all this was a show intended for popular consumption and having an amicable interviewer of the historians works for me. Some of the resentful posters prefer the pompous old duffers of the early seasons.
Dan Edwards ahhh I see, thank you very much for the clarification, that clears up other comments I’ve seen on various vids I’ve watched before.
@@jessicaclakley3691 This was right about the time when the network executives started screwing with the format by bringing in "experts" that were in fact amateurs (and in at least one case, a historical fiction author with a personal agenda to rewrite history in order to sell her own books) and bringing in "hipper, younger talent," some of whom weren't even archaeologists, to replace many of the key archaeologists from years past (including the Anglo Saxon specialist and the guy from English Heritage who always knew where the archaeology was by simply looking at the terrain). Mick Aston quit soon after these episodes were filmed.
TL;DR The quality control was very poor in seasons 19 and 20. I do want to point out, however, that the pottery expert in this episode is the real deal, and appeared in several episodes throughout the years.
I keep thinking time team should have had Raksha and Matt take over some of the hosting duties. They were part of the family already.
Taking no interest in the dig site, not proactive, mirrors what Mick says, and is completely useless.....why is Mary Anne on this show?
