      Time Team came about because Mick Aston had a couple of hours to kill one day while waiting for a train, and he went for a walk through a town. On that walk, in under two hours, he deduced the town's medieval layout and the likely location of some missing buildings. He talked about his deductions to Tim Taylor, who realised that with the right experts you could learn a lot in a very short time, and eventually managed to get Time Team produced.

      yi qx: legions in Great Britain were made up of men from all over the empire. They cavorted with local women and dropped their seed which contributed to the mixing of the original population. Of course the British do not like to admitting it. The same happened in Italy and all over Europe. A little doggerel in Italy goes like this: ‘watch out young man, Napoleon takes all men, young, ugly and handsome’ - thus he formed the ‘gran arme’e’ wherever he travelled in Europe. The British did the same to build the growing empire.

    Awesome episode. I'm a surveyor and I've been designing and building roads for 30 years. The principal hasn't changed drastically in 2,000 years. Cross sectional shape with a crown in the middle. Stormwater runoff sheds laterally to water tables or kerbs on the sides. Structural design comprising layers of metal aggregate varying in thickness. Larger particles at the bottom, smaller particles on the top.
    Brilliant episode.

      Ermine Street appears to have been a Roman version of a multi-lane freeway. In other episodes, Time Team uncover the remains of paved local Roman highways. Smaller side roads, with only two - four lanes, were built with the same materials, but were built without paving. Basically, like a modern, well-graveled, country road. ;)

      @maxdecphoenix 4 года назад +7

      @@patrickglaser1560 they're not dry though. Not initially anyway. you take the corn in (corn being the historical term for a seed grain from any given region - wheat, barley, oat, or in the case of American natives, maize), hydrate it and apply low heat. this facilitates cellular activity and replicates environmental conditions of spring to germinate the seed. Then when most of the corn is germinated, you need only apply enough heat to kill the seed. You don't necessarily want to roast it. And the grains are protected by the ceramic or fresh clay floor, in practice. They shouldn't ever contact naked flame.
      The issue here is that when dealing with heated gases in a tube, they will typically not flare up until they are exhasted. Where they become essentially like a thrown-flame. So i would think that the typical failure would have been that after a long burn, where a lot of energy was already in the bricks, the super-heated gasses passed through the tubes without fully combusting, found their way out of the three exhaust ports near the floor of the exterior, merged with air, burst into open flame, then licked up the sides of the exterior wooden walls and eves, and set the building alight. Burning it from the outside > in.
      Another possibility is that repeated use dried the surrounding foundation, shrinking the earthworks, causing cracks, and the flames erupted up through the floor.

    For me, the difference between the two technologies used for surveying, is that one is absolutely used and made by the operators, and the other is used by someone connecting to a technology made by others unrelated to his own proffesssion. So, for me, the older system works surprisingly well, and quite quickly, without the need of reliance on a tech which is unrelated to the task (GPS satellites are multi-function, not only dedicated to surveying). And relying on data broadcast from another tech, doesn't mean modern surveyors are more accurate - the tech of space is, for sure. Accessing that tech is the big difference, and a big advantage. SOmetimes I think our tech takes something away from the more basic ability of using human intuition, etc. We (humanity) are all lucky to have this tech, but without it we are extremely vulnerable, imho.
    It would be interesting to see how a modern surveyor would manage without his digital devices.

    It's kinda funny how long England was Roman. It's rather sad we don't know as much about the civilizations that were in America at the time. Ok they were "stone age", but several had established languages and at least two had education systems as well as permanent cities. This was ignored, destroyed, and otherwise completely overlooked by Europeans looking for "free" land.

    Interesting that they can't seem to agree on the pronunciation of Cheshunt. I have an uncle that lives there, and I've always thought it was 'Chess-nt'. NOT Chesh-nt. Even the lady archaeologist explaining the name's meaning confirms this. But on they go, saying CHESH-nt.
