    10MP unusable? Wow … how did some of the most influential photographers just work back in the days, when 10MP was only an engineers wet dream? I mean … all of their work was unusable … right?! What an unusable statement.

    Excellent review!! If I get you right, the A7R IV is kind of the jack of all trades, a camera that does pretty much everything very well whereas the A9 II is kind of like a Ferrari on a race track like a very sharp and precise instrument (but, only within the confines if the race track). I am a birder, I guess what it boils down to is the difference in the acquisition rate. Birds in general are hard to capture, they are tiny and they jump around. And unless you are using a huge prime with a bigger aperture of say f/4, most would be using a super zoom of some sort with an aperture of f/6.3 at best without the use of a tele converter, which means you are not letting in much light for the camera to work with. Some say the A9 or A9 II's hit rate is close to 100% or at least well over 90%. I am not sure whether you shoot birds, what would you say the A7R IV's hit rate is? Also, now that the A9 II is out, that makes the original A9's reduced price point almost the same as an A7R IV. This is a tough one I think. May be the AF on the A7R IV is also excellent in its own way? If that's the case, may be the A7R IV is the way to go.

      I own the A7R4, tracking with birds are very good. The problem is ISO. Like you mentioned, most ppl like me shoot telephoto at F6.3, when the light is not that bright in a cloudy day, the ISO goes all the way up to 12800 easily if you want to keep the shutter speed around 1/1000s or 1/2000s. The noise on A7R4 at ISO 12800 is so terrible and the photos are barely useful. I am a landscape photographer, recently trying some bird shooting and the post editing is so painful for A7R4. Maybe I should save money for a A9II.

    Currently using an a7iii and a6400 for wildlife; the a7iii when 600mm is enough and I want max quality and the a6400 when I need the extra reach. The a7riv is a compelling option having both options built into one camera. As a hobbyist it doesn't really make sense for me to sell/upgrade, but definitely compelling for anyone who is at a point where upgrading makes sense.

    I have an issue with you saying that 10mpx images are unusable. There are are 10s of thousands of pro images out there that were taken with lower mpix cameras just 10-15 years ago. 10mpx is plenty good enough for printing decent size images and far more than needed for digital only images. Only some pros really need 60 mpix. We have fallen into a huge marketing trap, proliferated by this ridiculous pixel peeping done by most RUclips reviewers. I shudder to think of how many amateurs and even prosumers overspend on a camera only because they think they need super high mpix when it’s just hype.

    • @CamillaI
      @CamillaI 4 года назад +1

      @@chasmoonie3403 The A9II and A9 have better low light capabilities being less pixels than the A7r4 (so less is more and don't generate as much noise.) However in great light situations you will be able to reach much further with in theory 26 mega pixel crop of the A7r4. Thats why someone like Mark Smith in Florida (blue skies) has the A7r4. As usual with photography equipment there is a trade off somewhere, and in England you would have to pack your fair weather camera A7R4 . But you also need 20 frames per second and the fastest autofocus?

    The crop mode of the a7RIV (or any other full-frame camera) does not give you more "reach" if by reach you mean more magnification of your subject. Your subject is the same size (in pixels) whether you shoot in full-frame mode or crop mode. You are simply cropping the picture in camera, not magnifying your image/subject (except in the viewfinder).

  • @Poopdeck1015

    I’m sorry but the a7riv CANNOT accommodate all forms of photography. I work in news, I can’t send the huge files the a7riv has to clients. APS-C mode is not a solution either. Pointless having APS-C on any full frame camera tbh. Strange because for freelancers, none of these cameras are within the range for photojournalists. But for those working with wire firms, of course, they will be provided such equipment.
    The a9ii is for everyone. The a7riv is for commercial. But even then, commercial/fashion photographers will spend more and use hassleblads/medium formats.

  • @orbitaljellyfish808
    @orbitaljellyfish808 4 года назад +2

    8mp is enough for a 4k monitor so how is 10mp crop unusable?
    R4 cons: huge files, noisier ISO, VF lag and blackout during continuous shooting, and can’t switch between full/crop while buffer recovers
    9ii cons: lower-res vf, “only” 25mp, less dynamic range than R4.
    Both are amazing but to me the real time tracking, no-blink cont. shooting, and capturing the moment is worth more than the detail; which can be had with glass anyway.

I like many of the features of the A7R4, especially the resolution. I shoot a lot of landscapes (waterfalls) and some sports and wildlife. My big concern is my inventory of Canon glass. Would my Canon glass work okay on the A7R4 without any negative affects to resolution? Any help with my decision would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • @rodneylapage4513
      @rodneylapage4513 4 года назад +2

      Raymond5621 I don’t have the A7r4 but I do have the a7rii. The canon glass adapts pretty well. When I upgraded to full frame it took me a bit to get glass. I borrowed canon glass from friends. You will have no problem shooting landscape. The af is much slower using an adaptor and you won’t get eye af. As a hobbyist I can still get wildlife and sports but if you are shooting professionally you aren’t going to get fast enough af and will need to invest in glass. I can’t say enough about Tamron glass for Sony. It’s tack sharp and fast af. The price is right too. Good luck man!

    • @AlergicToSnow
      @AlergicToSnow 4 года назад +2

      I have an a7rii. I still use canon glass with an adapter in some cases. I mostly do landscapes and portraits where it’s perfectly fine. It worked almost perfectly shooting a whole season of a nephews football, and two seasons of midget hockey for another nephew. Autofocus was a touch slow for sports but I can’t say I missed that many good shots. I do have the advantage of knowing both games very well and I had a good sense of when and where my best shots might present themselves, so I was prepared and didn’t have to rely as much on fast autofocus and long bursts of continuous shots. Resolution was never an issue, and my canon lenses are very sharp so no worries there.

      I have the Sony A7R4 and good Canon glass works well in terms of resolution with the A7R4 - I use as an adapter the MC-11. BUT: although the resolution is not an issue, the autofocus is and I mean here continuous tracking. So for BIF's an adapter based solution is not a good thing. Don't expect here too much. It works but not the reliable, sometimes you lose the focus while tracking.

    Sony must upgrade their memory slots to CF cards in their next generation. And if they beat everyone else in dynamic range and native ISO they will stay on top. More MP sensors are fine unless you cripple dynamic range and native ISO. Sony can stay on top but I guarantee Canon is working hard to compete in these areas with their next flagship mirrorless lineup. Flippy screens are cool but ill take performance and a tilt screen over crippled performance any day and twice on sunday. Canon has not opened up their RF (Nikon either with their Z mount) mount to 3rd party lens manufacturers which gives sony a default advantage right out of the gate.
    I'll take the a9 over the a7rIV any day.

The only thing I don’t like about a7r4 is the lack of touch screen, articulated screen and lack of multiple raw formats, which are all in r5 with I believe almost close to Sony in eye tracking too. But glasses for r5 ridiculously prized. Being a7s3 announced with all these features, I believe it is best in investing in a7r4 for future proof. What is your thoughts b/w these cameras?
