As a wedding photographer the A9's silent shutter and Real Time Tracking are such great tools to have. Also, the black-out free viewfinder and bursting are a joy to use during those need to capture moments.
Every time I see a video comparing the Sony's (and now with the a7riv included), I expect to discover which one I need. And every time the same thing happens. I realize I need all of them LMAO.
@@morsinimicis8737 OK, loaded question, but I'll bite. AF. The 5D4 is nowhere near as fast or accurate. Video. 5D4 looks OK in HD but 4k is cropped with huge files at the end of it. Size. Even with a grip the Sony is more manageable. Quiet. Silent shutter on the Sony vs that flapping mirror on 5D4. IBIS. Those are the first things you notice. As you use it more, you realise the Sony files require less post than the Canon files (at least for me they do YMMV) for some of the jobs I was shooting I was able to deliver jpg SOOC, I'd never been able to do that with the 5D4. It was expensive for me to move as I changed all the glass as well, but the increase up in keepers, ease of use and less post for some jobs has meant it was worth it. All the talk of complicated Sony menus etc is BS, I always found the Canon menus terrible. Hope this helps.
Switched from a7lll to a9 and I love it. The AF factor and 20fps is so completely at another level I could never go back. But I'm shooting dancers and moving targets a lot. One thing that has been a pleasant surprise is the video quality. I thought I'd miss the hlg etc, but I haven't at all. I do like the reduced rolling shutter. That was a serious problem when shooting video on the a7lll.
... great comparison of both cameras! And good to know that the a9 II has solved some of the a9's issues - I love the new version with the better ergonomics, the Anti Flicker Mode and the 10 f / s mechanical shutter.
Again a very nice video Wes! * Regarding DR and ISO, over 800 ISO which is were the A9 becomes ISO invariable (it isn't under that, source DPReview ) I can't tell DR and noise apart from them over 800 ISO. But I can tell at base ISO on DR, the highlights clips easier on the A9. * Regarding EFCS, e-shutter and full mech shutter and bokeh: it is the combination that give problems. So full mech or full e-shutter works fine, but not EFCS which is electronic first curtain with mech second curtain. The reason is the distance difference. The e-shutter "travels" on the sensor plane exactly and the mech a few millimeter in front of it. With shallow DOF, this creates an angle problem for the light rays. Full explanation, also with some illustrations, was given a few years ago in the DPR Sony FF forum. * Regarding HSS banding and flash with EFCS on, it seems to not happen with Sony flashes like the HVL-F45/60RM, but can happen at times on the 3d party flashes, like Godox. * Banding in artificial light with the A7III and other slow read out e-shutters, use the same shutter speed or max the double as the electric grid frequency has so 1/60 (or max 1/120) in the US and 1/50 (or max 1/100) here in Europe. * If you have problems with AF-C and small apertures (high numbers), especially in low light, then go over to AF-S. It focuses with most (but not all) lenses near wide open in AF-S. This principle goes for most Sony bodys (but not all). * We still lack the Aperture Drive in AF / Focus Priority Mode (forces AF to run almost wide open also on small apertures) to work with all lenses. The A7RIV seems near that. The A9 has the menu, but it only works with a few selected lenses and only in e-shutter mode (so not with flash), and the A7III (and A7RIII) doesn't have the Focus Priority Mode. Sony is really good with autofocus in general, but this part they really made a mess with.
I have the a7R2 and a92 and think this is a really excellent overview, as always. One thing I’d add is that once you have complete confidence in silent electronic shutters there is no going back. Thanks!
Since my flash equipment can’t refresh any faster, the mechanical shutter limitations don’t become an issue for me. I have the A9 and love what it can do with autofocus.
Really good comparison video Wes, the best I have seen. I switched from Nikon D810 based system to an A9 just as the v5.0 firmware came out. I was honestly shocked at the A9's AF-C and tracking and still am. I did miss a second body and on occasion, the higher res of the D810. So, I purchased a hardly used A7Rii for under £1k. The AF is not in the same league obviously, only one SD card slot and I do need to carry a pocketful of spare batteries. But, I enjoy the extra res for studio and landscape work. At some point I will exchange the A7Rii for a used A7Riii or A7Riv when they hit the 2nd hand market. I cannot see me selling the A9 in the foreseeable future. It is the camera I pick up when I just have to get the shot. Keep up the good work Wes and thanks.
Thanks! And yeah, I used to bring 12 batteries to weddings back in my a7ii days 😂 My next body will either be an a7Riv or an a9ii...depending on how much more commercial work I end up doing. Just going with the flow over here and buying what suits the job 👌🏻
Another truly useful, information-packed, and wonderfully presented video, Wes. Thank you. I expect your subscriber numbers will be heading north in short order. At least, they should be. Now, about that Wes Perry studio tour we're all waiting for ....
Great to hear it! I try hard to set a balance between professional and casual/personable. And hey, I’m filming in my kitchen, so you might as well grab something from the fridge while you’re here 😂
I just bought an A7iii 2 weeks ago and I LOVE IT. I upgraded from an A6000 and the differences between the two are night and day. I have an 6400 as my B cam, but was thinking of upgrading to an A9. Here in Korea, I can get a refurbished A9 with a shutter count of 1000 for about 2,000USD. Would you recommend upgrading my APS-C to a Full Frame?
Personally, I find an enormous difference between the image quality of an a9/a7iii and an a6400. I’ve been using an a6100 as well for several months (same image quality as the a6400), and I’ve found it really hard to match the two up. Images and video from the full frame cameras is just so much cleaner.
@@WesPerry Agreed. I photographed a basketball game with both my A7iii and the 6400 and found myself using the A7iii a lot more. Looks like I'm trading my 6400 in for credit towards the A9! Thanks for your input!
I use it quite a bit. In bright sunlight it’s still not bright enough. Additionally it makes the exposure and colours inaccurate. Anything beyond the +1 setting on the rear screen seems to skew the exposure and colours. The viewfinder is always much more accurate.
@@michaelhains2291 lol, australia has the most brutal sun, probably a personal preference type deal. I also dont have an issue using sunny weather mode.
Have been shooting with an A7iii underwater for a couple years. Was looking at an a7riii for the larger sensor but have been holding off due to the auto focus being a bit slower. I hadn't even looked at the a9. Now on to some research to see how others find its performance while diving. not normally using single photo mode. 90% of my photos are with strobes. And everything is moving including the camera. Yes I would love to upgrade to one of the current camera but underwater housings cost $5k so finding units that fit my current housing.
Very informative video, the Sony a7III was my introduction to digital photography, my last slr camera was a Nikon N90s and I've been trying to catch up ever since. I'm blown away by the things that digital mirrorless cameras can do nowadays. and I'm in love with my a7III, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens combo ( near the same price of a D780 body ). I'm not a pro so the a7III is for me, Sony Rocks!
Emil Cabaj it depends on the church. Some have decent natural light or high quality CFL/LED’s and it’ll work. But some have crappy fluorescent/LED lights or even worse sodium vapor lights that make a disaster of silent shutter. It’s a case by case basis. You have to test carefully before committing to a silent vs mechanical shutter.
I just sol my a7iii toget a9. Im a little bummed about dynamic range. I have some amazing backlight ski shots. Still really stoked. I've been using my a6400 over a7iii because of the better focus system and I want that capability in full frame. In the forest and around grass or rocks the a7iii hit focus much, much less than my a6400.
@@WesPerry I looked it up. The DXO dynamic range score slightly favors the a6400 though they are very close. I'm convinced that the a6400 is the best value for money camera one can buy.
Great comparison. In my opinion A9 is worth extra money. I own Olympus m1mii and i shoot occasionally with A9, because of great electronic shutter and deep buffer. I don't photograph weddings, but I have to say i hate the sound of a mechanical shutter in a church.
True story there. I’m always really grumpy when the lighting in the church is so bad that I have to turn my mechanical shutters back on. I feel so obnoxious when I have to make any sound at all now 😂
Yeah it’s annoying to have to turn off the electronic first curtain shutter on the a7iii to get clean bokeh at high shutter speeds. Makes it sound like a machine gun, while the a9 effortlessly pops along.
Just what I needed! How’s the A9 compare in low light focusing. I have A7iii but looking to “upgrade” to A9 for silent shooting, build quality and real time tracking 🤌 A7iii shutter failure stories have me scared
I can’t say I’ve heard many a7iii shutter failure stories myself. I think I’m about 100k in with mine at this point. The a9 does do better in low light AF than the a7iii, but be aware the a7iii’s image quality holds up better at that point. The a9 becomes mushy at the limit of its autofocus.
@@WesPerry I see quite a lot of horror stories in the Sony Facebook groups I’m in. And then a class action law suit is on going suing Sony for A7iii shutter failures. I’ve tested the raw files from DP review and the A9 RAWs do degrade quicker. But files look nice... kinda like film grain rather than iso.
Well you asked ! I've got two a7III 's and thinking about an a9 MkI for photographing dogs mainly, specially as they tear around a field. A7R IV... Nah, don't need that many MPs, a9II... Again nah, not getting paid for anything so cannot justify the extra Wonga ! Great vid, as usual, Still don't know, maybe get rid of one of the A7III's and get an a9, Cheers Dude.
Hi Wes. Great review. I'm in the market for a Sony FF. Currently have a a77ii which has helped me with my studio photography. Want to upgrade. What would you recommend of the 2? Also want to shoot some street photography
Hi Wes, I take low natural light shots outdoors (street & landscape) - will the dynamic range & ISO of the A7iii give me visibly better results than the A9? I print at about 24" x 16".
The difference is only visible when you push it really hard. Most people don’t push it that hard, though. However, I stopped doing hdr for real estate when I got the a7iii, because I found the dynamic range so good. I do find the a7iii has a more visible grain structure than the a9, but the colours and overall accuracy of the image doesn’t break down as fast. The a9 turns to mush before the a7iii does.
Oh absolutely. I used an a6000 for years, and the a7iii just makes everything better from there. The a7ii actually has slightly Worse autofocus than the a6000, so I wouldn’t go there.
Thanks so much for your video. I Still shooting with my old A99V but I want to upgrade for A9 or 7R3 . I love shooting sports also portrait. Which one in your option???. Thanks so much.
I have an a7rii but like doing wildlife and sports photography. The 7rii is great at many things but the aforementioned it is not. Waiting for a nicely priced, hardly used a9 coming to me in the mail!! The AF and zero blackout were the tipping point for me!
Hi Wes, Good review. Am selling my A73 in exchange for the A9 because I need fast action stills so this breakdown video comparison was really helpful. The A73 is an all-rounder hybrid camera but it doesn’t excel at either stills or video with newer tech and bodies out there in 2020, while the stills AND af of A9 still is on top and excels. And although the A92 fixes all the shortcomings of the A9, the price difference makes it a harder decision to upgrade especially since the video specs didn’t improve. As for video, the R5 looks promising on paper but let’s see in real world use. FYI, the A9 prices have dropped significantly and I was lucky enough to pick one up for the price of A7r3 almost new. Lastly, I have the EOSR to see if it is as good as it says with the claimed color science and af speed. And putting it against the A73, I can say the following: EOSR af is fast but not as intelligent as the A73 when it comes to eye af and tracking. And for colors, it’s more of preference than science as I think Canon does a better job with white balance (especially in auto) than Sony. There are other features and tradeoffs in both but as you mentioned several times, all are good and it comes down to what you need and/or use, what you can afford, and if you’re a paid professional, it comes with the territory. For non-paid professionals, then decision process has other factors to consider. Love to hear what you do for the video side or what lenses are your go too!
Agreed. And also that the R5 exists only on paper right now. People get really put off when you tell them that. Haha I just use straight non-slog profile for shooting video for youtube, as I don’t have a lot of time to devote to it. Contrast -2, Sat -2, Sharp +2, then balance in post. Lenses are usually Zeiss 35 1.4 (not very sharp for photo, but sharp enough for video) and either the Sony 85 1.4 or Viltrox 85 1.8.
Hi Wes Perry, Awesome! Thanks for sharing the lens and video settings. Have you tried the Sigma MC-11 with EF lenses. I hear they work well and shoot 20fps in single mode and 10fps in continuous. And since I’ve only been a hybrid shooter for about a year part time, I don’t get brand struck/loyal but rather loyal to the tools that allows me to perform my best, which you have the creative, the exposure controls, and the gear. It’s good times where the competition will drive new and better tech as well as drive prices down or at least be more competitive. R5 comes out then Sony hopefully comes out with the A7s3 or A74 or whatever next improvements. This is good for all of us!
I’m afraid I’ve never used adapter canon lenses. But yeah, I’ve heard the MC-11 has been working well for most people (assuming they’re using “modern” canon lenses. Older ones not so much).
I would love to see how the A7c autofocus compares to the a9 being both have real time tracking and the A7c can focus down to -4 ev as apposed to the a9 to -3 ev
To be honest, I’m not quite sure that I buy that assessment, just based on how it seems to have performed for the people who have shown their tests. Unfortunately I have yet to get my hands on one to see for myself, though. I would, of course, expect it to do marginally better than the a7iii, though.
Was thinking of moving from a6500 to a7iii.. but didnt know so much of these issues.. i thought it would have auto tracking for stills like the a6400.. hmm.. bit disappointed
It would still be mostly an upgrade from the a6500. The a6400, though, makes things a bit more complicated. I would still take an a7iii over an a6400 any day, just for the full frame goodness and battery life.
So as im shooting wedding...I like the A9 for fast action if needed (like kids doing something and you just need to react) but then, there are also parties indoor, so i need that flash...as comment below, also want videos and then its the A9 again...Im torn between A9/7iii/7Riii... (why 7Riii, cause i also like to do portrait) (sports and wildlife isnt my thing at this moment) any suggestions?
I think I already gave all the info I can. Haha. I find the R cameras just have too many megapixels for wedding work. Although lots of people use them for weddings, it would just slow down the workflow too much, create added storage need, etc. Lots of people are perfectly happy with a7iii for wedding. So I guess the answer is...a9ii 😏😂
well,i have a7iii with Tamron 28 75 2.8 and i think its very good combination! i research for gimbal those days! check if you like my last video in very dark place, hammam exactly!
Quick question if I may. Looking at DPREVIEW, I was shocked to see that at high iso, A9 is very significantly noisier than A7iii. Is that accurate or has things changed with firmware upgrades? Thanks. Thanks for your excellent videos!
In RAW, that’s not really something you can change with a firmware update. I wouldn’t say it’s Significantly noisier in practice, but it’s certainly noisier, that’s just a fact. I find the noise is a little more organic than the noise in the a7iii, though. That being said, it turns to mush much sooner than the a7iii does. It’s just a fact of life when the sensor has ram and processing glued to the back of it. More heat and EMI to raise the noise floor of the sensor.
That’s a tricky one, should make a video just on that. The a7iii has picture profiles and sLog, which is a huge advantage, But the a9 has slightly better AF in video and Much better rolling shutter (which the a7iii is Terrible for). a7iii generally has better colour and contrast rendition than the a9 in video, and is just a hair sharper.
@@WesPerry Thank you : ) I think the same because of silent shutter : )) Your opinion was very important for me . Thank you . : )) ( So far a9II is too expensive for me ) Have a good day and a waiting for the next video . : )
I’m surprised to learn that a9’s EFCS does not affect Bokeh compared to a7iii. I’m very curious to find out if the difference is noticeable. Do you have example shots on a9? Thanks for great video!
If you’re into bokeh, the difference is actually pretty substantial. I was about to make a dedicated video about it, which is why I didn’t go deeper into it here, but the schedule kindof got away from me. One of these days...
Hi Wes, which one does your cat like? ha,ha! Seriously, you have given me something to think about with the a9. I currently own the a7iii. The video looked great by the way; I checked to see which lens you were using.
This became more of an education video for me. Can you do a video on just the e curtain shutter? I’ve been basically keeping it off on my r3 bc I use Godox flashes. Not bothering to enable it when shooting in natural light.
Thank you for the video, I’m a subscriber, and do enjoy your way of sharing information. I’m on the fence for the A9 or A9II, I own the a7iii (first camera I’ve ever purchased) plus some lenses. Im not a professional, I shoot my boys soccer games, speedball paintball, portraits, family travel, street, events for friends, I’m just enjoying the hobby. I do wish the A7III had a stickier AF, your comment about AF and aperture convinced me that the path is to an A9 or A9II, just don’t know which one. The A7RIV with the file size in RAW would require a significant investment in editing hardware for me, not going there. Do you think Sony can deliver the medium raw option through firmware? That would make the A7RIV really appealing to a wider range of photographers. Thank you!
I wouldn’t only say go with the a9ii if you would need mechanical shutter (mostly flash) for a lot of your stuff. And there’s no reason to believe that they’ll be producing a medium raw option, unfortunately. That usually has to be baked into the image processor chip from the get go, as the processing overhead would make it too difficult to accomplish through general purpose processing.
Thanks for the answer, i use now a canon 7D mkii with 600mm 4L, but the weight starts be a problem. So i want smaller lighter. I think Sony A9 or A7 with 200-600mm.
Of course the a9ii is the best for AF, but it’s only a little ahead of the a9. Now between the a9 and the a7Riv, that all depends on how close you think you can get to them/how much cropping you’ll probably have to do. Some find the extra pixels or useful, and some prefer the faster focusing 🤷🏻♂️
Wow you explained this so clearly and accurately! I'd love to hear some comparisons of the A7R3 and also A7R4 and A9ii with the same details. I thought the A7R3 was just a "better" version of the A7iii but came to learn that wasn't the case, the A7iii is actually superior for action and AF. Sometimes the more expensive camera isn't always better., in addition the A7iii and A7R3 both have better IQ in my opinion than the A9 does, must better ability to recover shadows without getting a noisy murky look.
I still haven’t gotten my hands on any of the R’s, as they don’t work for my workflow (too many mp’s). But now that I’m focusing more on RUclips, I’ll be trying to get a look at the Riv sometime.
The AF of the A73 is the same as the A7R3 the only difference it has more sensor coverage so you claim of it being better for action is pure nonsense based on the horrible and often repeated mistake that it shares the same AF as the A9. Not even close! The only thing where the A73 has an upper hand is on high iso for video. Everything else the R3 is the better camera.
@@shaolin95 I had the chance to use both at the same event and found the A7iii to work much better. Same lens, same light, same dog agility event. AF tracking wasn't even usable on the R3 for me. I have used the A9 and A9ii also, clearly better than any of the A7's i've used but I think if you actually shoot the A7iii next to the A7Riii you'll find the A7iiii works better.
@@shaolin95 , I own the A9, A7RIII (just sold to get the A7RIV) and the A7III. I can tell you in my experience the A7RIII focus is not as fast or as reliable as the A7III AF. I think it is because of the older sensor in it. And I am not just talking about the spread of AF points, but actual continuous AF speed and reliability. Of, course any of the Third Gen FF bodies crush Gen 1 and 2 in AF performance. I can tell you that the AF performance of the A7RIV is better than the A7III and almost as good as the A9 (probably 85-90%), and it has the Real Time Tracking.
I'm more into video recording, will be using my Camera for professional purpose . Produsing movies, which one is the best in video recording quality. Sony A9 or A7111 ?
That’s not a clear answer. The a9 has significantly less rolling shutter, and marginally better video AF than the a7iii. The a7iii, however, offers picture profiles, SLOG, and better dynamic range even in non-log recording. So it depends on your use case. If you record a lot of action, and don’t want to fool with LUTs and profiles, the a9. If you really want to get into the nitty gritty of it all and get the absolute best image quality, the a7iii.
Hey Wes, from your experience when shooting the A7iii and the A9 together do you have any issues matching your colours when editing or are they seamless?
The truth is somewhere in between. They’re reasonably close, but you’ll get a larger colour difference from your lenses rather than the cameras anyway…unless you’re shooting with two of the exact same lenses for some reason…
is that right about the buffer? Thought the A7iii was much higher. The R3 has near 80 shot raw, unless uncompressed? The A9 blows away the A7iii, no sugar coating it.
Hey I am planning to buy new camera for photography. But I am confused about which camera I should buy. I would be happy if you share your experience and recommend me any best camera. Thank you
You didn't talk about the difference between the user interfaces, dials, and ease of use? I would say that the best camera between these two is the one that you can find for cheaper.
I find any differences in ease of use to be a wash. The drive mode dial on the a9 is actually more of a hinderance to use than a shortcut button (as I use on the a7iii), requiring you to completely reposition the camera to make changes. The user interface is only very slightly different, and those differences can be grouped in with the autofocus section, as that’s what they really concern. Just my opinions, of course ;) Obviously I had to trim out many dozens of little differences that likely aren’t That significant to the average user. Had to focus on what I thought was most important.
@@WesPerry Thank you, Wes, for the reply! So nice of you. After 7 years my Fuji X100S broke and it's not worth fixing. I'm looking to upgrade. (I also am determined to get a Profoto B10.) I just can't decide, the Sony A7III or Fuji X-T4. I like the full frame of the Sony but the mechanical dials of the Fuji. I am really impressed with the lenses from both companies. I only want two. A 35mm & 85mm prime or the Fuji APSC equivalent.
Most are very happy with the Sony 35 and 85 1.8 lenses (if you’re not looking to break the bank). For me that would come down to whether or not you do much low light photography. This year I’ve had to use my a7iii at 52,000 iso and I’m pretty sure a Fuji APS-C would have died 😂 BUT otherwise the Fuji is a more fun camera to use, with only slightly less reliable AF.
@@WesPerry Thank you, Wes. Yes, I've been researching Sony's 1.8 lenses. Really very nice. Light, inexpensive. Great image quality. Exactly what I would get. If I do low light photography it's usually still objects so I just use a tripod and longer shutter speeds. This is not an issue. Yes, I think the Fuji would be more fun to use. For me it's more intuitive. I'm worried about getting used to the Sony interface. It's such a simple request, Sony, just put ISO, Shutter Speed, and Exposure compensation on dials.
I have been shooting the last year with A7III and am considering upgrading to A9 or A9II to get away from banding issues. Most of my photography is crowds, indoor for non-profit groups and for social media reprint. Ant ideas?
I’d suggest renting one to make sure it actually deals with the issues. a9ii is slightly better than the a9 for it, as it also has anti-flicker, which a9 does not.
@@WesPerry Thank you. I just cringe a little with the price difference as this is a hobby for me. I have gotten most of my glass down to f2.8 which seems to help.
It’s a known issue. The electronic first curtain shutter not properly keeping pace with the mechanical second curtain shutter. The electronic shutter on the a9 (and similarly the a1) is the only one that keeps up.
Video autofocus is about equal, low light/high iso and dynamic range is Much better on either of these Sonys, as they’re full frame cameras. Regular photo autofocus is probably close enough in the a7iii, but with the a7iii you gain powerful face and eye detect AF, and the AF in general will be vastly superior to the 80D in the a9.
Hello Wes, did you mean both cameras can do 1/32000s in silent shutter or just one of them? I've been using drop in ND filters in my A7R3 for bright days shooting 105 f1.4 and even 70-200 f2.8 I would like to know if that option is available on my camera as well.. Thank you for a great review! Again :)
So I have a Canon 5d iii and was hoping to move to a 1Dx ii, but Canon has left my country and Sony arrived. I can get a better price that in USA for the a7iii. I use the 5diii for wildlife and sport, will I get same AF speed results with the a7iii + metabone (5th gen) with my canon lenses? I know a9 would be better, but it's not available, so a7iii will at least give me the same af speed as 5diii?
Each lens will vary greatly in performance, there’s no one best option. Also, after years of firmware updates, most agree that the Sigma MC-11 adapter now works best overall (and usually costs less). There will be many lenses that will work Better, but some older models, or simply models with older AF systems, will work a little worse.
@@WesPerry Oh ok, so af speed depends on lens too. My big question is if I have to move to sony, due to Canon prices on 1dx and not being in my country. Lenses I use now are 70-200/300/400 2.8. So I would continue using them with the adapter, but wondering if af will be a downgrade from 5diii to a7iii. I don't expect to be superior, just to know if that change would be a same result to start in Sony world. As bringing a 5Div would cost me the double money than getting here the a7iii many thanks for replying
Again, depending on the lens, I’ve had many people tell me they get Superior AF compared to the 5Diii on their adapted lenses on a7iii. This is with the latest/newest versions of the lenses.
The A9 AF is FAR superior to the A73 so your statement about how close they are is just absurd. This is simple, the A73 has a slight advantage in high iso and is clearly a better video camera. EVERYTHING else, the A9 is by far the best camera of the two. Much nicer EVF, LCD, much bigger buffer and faster FPS (electronic). MUCH faster readout speeds so you can actually use silent shooting without rolling shutter issues which also means, you do not have to use EFCS for faster shooting which when in use leads to rendering bokeh issues at faster shutter speeds. Also, it goes to 1/32000 shutter instead of 1/8000. Extra dials also are welcome. And what about no blackout... Eye AF that is FAR beyond any other camera from Sony or any other manufacturer ..same for AF tracking...a WHOLE new league. Plus you can select Left or Right eye. Funny that every plus of the A9 you downplay then exaggerate the pluses of the A73.
I actually prefer the a9 to the a7iii for video, as I’m not fond of using log profiles (not useful for my work), and the a9 has much less rolling shutter than the a7iii in video. We can’t agree on everything ;)
Thank you for this. I have been on the fence to go Sony from Nikon. Have been budgeting for an A9 next year. Broke my Nikon and picked up an A7 iii at an opportune price. Still on the fence, even with the mirrorles benefits. I think I still may go with the A9 next year though.
The recently leaked allegedly leaked A7MIV specs seem as if no upgrade was made....pretty disappointing....maybe I'll save for a A9II for my 2nd sony buy
I hadn’t seen anything about that yet. I assume it would at least get the new body and real time AF. As long as they keep the price down that’s really all they need to hold off the competition (I’m not saying I’m not hoping for more...)
16:18 - A7III doesn't have a USB- C port. Otherwise - the best comparison video between those two beasts I've ever seen. ( tell me I've been wrong about USB-C) 😅
24p is disgusting and belongs nowhere but in the cinema. I similarly have great difficultly watching the choppy mess that is 24p youtube videos. Just hot garbage with the 3-2 pull down to match computer displays. 30p is acceptable, but still needlessly jumpy. When youtube accepts it, I’ll be happily moving to 120p. It doesn’t work for fiction, but it does for real life.
Víctor Aguilar don’t worry, you’ll come around eventually. Just might take a few years 😂 (24p is going to look even sillier once everyone is accustomed to the smoothness of 120Hz+ displays.)
Different tools for different jobs!
Unless you do all the jobs...then I guess you need all the tools? 😏
I have the Sony a7III and its so far ahead of the Canon 5D4 it replaced that I'm still blown away with it.
Really? How so, I'm tempted
@@huwjones5879 it does thank you, I'm setting up a hire with the 600mm soon. Cheers 👍🏻
@@huwjones5879 sounds like a load of bs
@@mandeepkalsi2377 How so?
Have you got stuck with a load of Canon EF gear that’s worth fuck all by any chance?
Switched from a7lll to a9 and I love it. The AF factor and 20fps is so completely at another level I could never go back. But I'm shooting dancers and moving targets a lot. One thing that has been a pleasant surprise is the video quality. I thought I'd miss the hlg etc, but I haven't at all. I do like the reduced rolling shutter. That was a serious problem when shooting video on the a7lll.
Yep. That’s why I generally Prefer shooting video on the a9 👌🏻
... great comparison of both cameras!
I am aware of these things, but didn’t go in depth as the video would then be an hour long and no one would watch it 🤓😂
I have the a7R2 and a92 and think this is a really excellent overview, as always. One thing I’d add is that once you have complete confidence in silent electronic shutters there is no going back. Thanks!
Agreed 👍🏻
Thanks!
And yeah, I used to bring 12 batteries to weddings back in my a7ii days 😂
My next body will either be an a7Riv or an a9ii...depending on how much more commercial work I end up doing.
Ohhh, it’s coming. I just have to clean my kitchen...err, studio, first. 😂
Hey! It's Wes, that intro makes me feel home man! can't explain it
Great to hear it!
Thank you so much Wes, very helpful and informative comparative review! I learnt a lot! God bless you and good luck!
6:29 The A9 has a menu setting for using the rear screen in sunlight. It makes a big difference if you use it.
I use it quite a bit. In bright sunlight it’s still not bright enough. Additionally it makes the exposure and colours inaccurate. Anything beyond the +1 setting on the rear screen seems to skew the exposure and colours. The viewfinder is always much more accurate.
@@WesPerry Must be the milder sun in Australia, works well here. Personal differences I suppose.

Yes I would love to upgrade to one of the current camera but underwater housings cost $5k so finding units that fit my current housing.
still relevant. great job, wes! i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
One of the best reviews of the A9 I’ve seen! Thank you. Ordered one (second hand) today.
I have three other videos about the a9 on my feed as well. The long term review and full setup videos might be helpful To you.

Very informative video 👍
I’ll accept it 😏
Great review. Thank you very much for clean explanation and for mentioning of bird photography.
Thank you for the detailed review..
I'll wait till A7 IV and then abandon Nikon :)
Sounds like a solid plan. 👌🏻
(Especially given their current financial difficulties 😬)
I jumped on the A7II first and then after A7III I said BYE Nikon! For some reason I can't part with my D500 though🤦🏾♂️😩
All that Nikon glasses wasted.
Canon user has switched already (with much better adaptors)
@@WesPerry Hey, can you tell me is silent shutter in A7 III useless if I want to use it in a church? Or is it sufficent?
Emil Cabaj it depends on the church. Some have decent natural light or high quality CFL/LED’s and it’ll work. But some have crappy fluorescent/LED lights or even worse sodium vapor lights that make a disaster of silent shutter. It’s a case by case basis. You have to test carefully before committing to a silent vs mechanical shutter.
Thanks this was really helpful
Great video Wes! A9 or A9II in my professional use...sporting events, mtb, motorcross, etc.
The a9 should still get you a lot more dynamic range than the a6400!
@@WesPerry I looked it up. The DXO dynamic range score slightly favors the a6400 though they are very close. I'm convinced that the a6400 is the best value for money camera one can buy.
As always, excellent detail in the comparison Wes. Good job.
I feel so obnoxious when I have to make any sound at all now 😂
Really good comparison. It's helped a lot
I've heard of and noticed the weird bokeh when shooting at fast shutter speeds. One of the reasons I prefer a9
Yeah it’s annoying to have to turn off the electronic first curtain shutter on the a7iii to get clean bokeh at high shutter speeds. Makes it sound like a machine gun, while the a9 effortlessly pops along.
@@WesPerry wow I certainly wasn't expecting a reply! Love your videos and the unique vibes Wes. Will always keep watching 👌👌🔥🔥
Excellent video. I'm definitely getting the A9II. Seems like the ultimate stills camera.
It really does. Enjoy!

Great! Perfectly done! Thanks!
I got the A7R III......waiting to see what that A7 IV specs will be. Eventually want a A7R IV and A7 IV/III depending on new camera's specs.
For practical use, USB-C charging and battery life are big deals. Thanks for the comparison review. I was thinking about A9 after I just sold my A73.
If you’re shooting outdoors, the performance difference between the a9 and a9ii is marginal at best anyway.
Hi Wes. Great review. I'm in the market for a Sony FF. Currently have a a77ii which has helped me with my studio photography. Want to upgrade. What would you recommend of the 2? Also want to shoot some street photography
For studio work the a7iii is much more usable, due to the better tethering USB port (faster, more durable), and faster mechanical shutter.
@@WesPerry thanks for such a speedy reply. The A7iii is firmly on the shopping list now 👍
Really appreciate your videos, Wes
Thank you for this review! Very helpful!
As someone who just likes photography as a hobby and owns an a6000 would you say the a7iii would be a good transition into the full frame world ?
Oh absolutely. I used an a6000 for years, and the a7iii just makes everything better from there. The a7ii actually has slightly Worse autofocus than the a6000, so I wouldn’t go there.
@@WesPerry thank you for the feedback! Great to get some insight
Great prices for used a9’s now!
What do you think for 2023? I can’t seem to find a better camera than the a7iii or a9 for under 2k, but I like Nikon and Fuji colors
Excellent comparison!
Hi Wes,
Good review.
Haha
I just use straight non-slog profile for shooting video for youtube, as I don’t have a lot of time to devote to it. Contrast -2, Sat -2, Sharp +2, then balance in post.
Lenses are usually Zeiss 35 1.4 (not very sharp for photo, but sharp enough for video) and either the Sony 85 1.4 or Viltrox 85 1.8.
Hi Wes Perry,
Awesome!
@@WesPerry i have yet to use full frame yet.. just got into photography a year ago
Great insights! Time for an a9ii, a7Riv comparison.
Hopefully one of these days I’ll get my hands on them 😉
Mechanical shutter for life!
(Though I am a heavy strobe user so...)
well,i have a7iii with Tamron 28 75 2.8 and i think its very good combination!
i research for gimbal those days! check if you like my last video in very dark place, hammam exactly!
Great video !
This opened my eyes so much! Of course! Extra heat would introduce more noise. Thank you! :)
@wes - Thanks for the comparison.. what about video.. how do the two compare?
That’s a tricky one, should make a video just on that. The a7iii has picture profiles and sLog, which is a huge advantage, But the a9 has slightly better AF in video and Much better rolling shutter (which the a7iii is Terrible for). a7iii generally has better colour and contrast rendition than the a9 in video, and is just a hair sharper.
Great video ! But as a wedding photographer, if you had to buy one camera, which one would you choose A9 or A7III ?
Just one? A9ii. Best of both worlds. Haha.
But if it’s one of those two, the a9. It’s just a more confident camera.
@@WesPerry Thank you : ) I think the same because of silent shutter : )) Your opinion was very important for me . Thank you . : )) ( So far a9II is too expensive for me ) Have a good day and a waiting for the next video . : )
Yeah, it’s still too expensive for me as well. 😉
Wes Perry wao thanks for the quick reply. Please consider making that video in the future. I’m particularly interested in the example in a9.
Hi Wes, which one does your cat like? ha,ha! Seriously, you have given me something to think about with the a9. I currently own the a7iii. The video looked great by the way; I checked to see which lens you were using.
The cat refused to go on the record for it.
This became more of an education video for me. Can you do a video on just the e curtain shutter? I’ve been basically keeping it off on my r3 bc I use Godox flashes. Not bothering to enable it when shooting in natural light.
I plan on it 👍🏻
Thank you for the video, I’m a subscriber, and do enjoy your way of sharing information.
Wes Perry thank you for the answer.
your video look sooo smooth... 120 fps??
Birds photography witch is better 7III or A9?
That’s easy: a9
Thanks for the answer, i use now a canon 7D mkii with 600mm 4L, but the weight starts be a problem. So i want smaller lighter. I think Sony A9 or A7 with 200-600mm.
Or A9ii , A7IV, A7III, i really don’t now. My passion is birds photography
Produsing movies, which one is the best in video recording
quality. Sony A9 or A7111 ?
a7iii
That’s not a clear answer.
The a9 has significantly less rolling shutter, and marginally better video AF than the a7iii.
The a7iii, however, offers picture profiles, SLOG, and better dynamic range even in non-log recording.
So it depends on your use case. If you record a lot of action, and don’t want to fool with LUTs and profiles, the a9. If you really want to get into the nitty gritty of it all and get the absolute best image quality, the a7iii.
Thanks alot.
@@WesPerry Thank you for the quick response I appreciate it. It might be less of a hassle to have two of the same cameras I suppose :)

Probably got a great price on a great camera. The AF ago the a9 with the 35 GM is fantastic.
Hello and thanks for your videos! Is there a chance to talk about petions for PICTURE PROFILES and GAMMA DISPLAY ASSIST in Sony A9?
I think we’re well beyond that ever being added to the a9, three years after it came out.
is that right about the buffer? Thought the A7iii was much higher. The R3 has near 80 shot raw, unless uncompressed? The A9 blows away the A7iii, no sugar coating it.
Yeah, just double checked it. They were shooting particularly high with that spec. 🤷🏻♂️
Which would be better for landscape and wildlife?
a7iii for landscape and a9 for wildlife 😂
i have an a7iii for 3 1/2 years now. i think getting the a9 for cheap is a good 2nd body
I think you are wrong on the a7iii buffer. I get like 75-80 shots in Raw on mine before it slows down.
Yep, looks like that was the spec for uncompressed raw:

Wes Perry usually nature and people around me.. thank you for the reply
Just my opinions, of course ;)
Obviously I had to trim out many dozens of little differences that likely aren’t That significant to the average user.
This year I’ve had to use my a7iii at 52,000 iso and I’m pretty sure a Fuji APS-C would have died 😂
BUT otherwise the Fuji is a more fun camera to use, with only slightly less reliable AF.
The a9 can be gotten used for pretty cheap now (which I guess I don’t have to say, since it’s one of the main themes of this video 😏)
@@WesPerry Thank you.
Do you have a theory behind halved bokeh? It makes no sense, as bokeh is, just as much as the focused subject, simply light falling on sensor.
It’s a known issue. The electronic first curtain shutter not properly keeping pace with the mechanical second curtain shutter. The electronic shutter on the a9 (and similarly the a1) is the only one that keeps up.
My question is how is the a9 with the mc-11? Do I still get 20 FPS with the sigma 70-200 2.8 sport?
Pretty sure the MC-11 tops out at 15fps with most lenses.
Would this camera be a upgrade from a 80d?
Again :)
Sorry if I was unclear, only the a9 can do 1/32,000s.
@@WesPerry Thank you!
As bringing a 5Div would cost me the double money than getting here the a7iii
many thanks for replying
@@WesPerry So the MC-11 by Sigma it's also good price where I live, since there is an official Sigma here. Thanks for that :)
Again, depending on the lens, I’ve had many people tell me they get Superior AF compared to the 5Diii on their adapted lenses on a7iii. This is with the latest/newest versions of the lenses.
You don't have to turn the electronic shutter even when on flash on A9. You won't get banding.
No, you’ll definitely still get flash banding on the a9. That has less to do with the camera and more to do with the flash itself.
Good comparison! Thank you!
Gostaria de saber como gravou esse vídeo, camera, lente 30p? 60p ? grato
60p. Love using 60p ;)
@@WesPerry thank you so much
Great video but really annoying background music.
What camera are you using to film yourself?
Sony a9 with the 35 1.4 Zeiss 👌🏻 (links in description)
@@WesPerry Did you film in 1080p60? because you can't film 4k60?
Deadeye yes indeed. Because I like 60p more than I like 4K. One of these days I’ll get to have both ;)
Nice video... I currently have the A9 and have been debating on whether to get a second body and thinking either the A7III or A7RIII
I opted for the a7iii because I don’t need or want all those megapixels all the time. Really wish the Riii had a medium raw mode like the D850.
In 2024, I just bought an a9 as a second body for $1300. Will pair with my a7riii
9:09 Stockphoto alike :D
I'm willing to take that as a complement. Need to be able to execute all styles depending on the circumstance ;)
It sounds like the two cameras complement each other rather than one of them replacing the other. (BTW, I have an A7iii.)
Probably why I have both 😉
What about a9 vs A7IV? Thank you :)
Big time. Trying to get my hands on an early copy of the a7iv, but I’m not important enough, I guess 😂
@@WesPerry Seriously ? You are one of the most reliable in y...
I’m still not up for early looks at anything yet. For a variety of reasons 😏
A7iii feels like a far better camera for my kind of work. Landscapes, parties, portraits and events. I pretty much never used the burst mode lol
If it works, it works!
The recently leaked allegedly leaked A7MIV specs seem as if no upgrade was made....pretty disappointing....maybe I'll save for a A9II for my 2nd sony buy
I hadn’t seen anything about that yet. I assume it would at least get the new body and real time AF. As long as they keep the price down that’s really all they need to hold off the competition (I’m not saying I’m not hoping for more...)
the best?...Mine...the a7iii =D
👌🏻
16:18 - A7III doesn't have a USB- C port. Otherwise - the best comparison video between those two beasts I've ever seen. ( tell me I've been wrong about USB-C) 😅
It definitely does 😉
Sony A6400
Yes?
I couldn't get past 1 minute because of your 60 fps. It just makes me dizzy. Why not just shoot in 24fps?
24p is disgusting and belongs nowhere but in the cinema. I similarly have great difficultly watching the choppy mess that is 24p youtube videos. Just hot garbage with the 3-2 pull down to match computer displays. 30p is acceptable, but still needlessly jumpy. When youtube accepts it, I’ll be happily moving to 120p.
It doesn’t work for fiction, but it does for real life.
Wes Perry lol, says you.
Víctor Aguilar don’t worry, you’ll come around eventually. Just might take a few years 😂
(24p is going to look even sillier once everyone is accustomed to the smoothness of 120Hz+ displays.)
I just buy a9 with 24-70 gm
And how’s that working out for you? 🤓
Wes Perry after sony a II, just amazing!!)
