I've found that for me, it's always been *more* scary to have the door open than closed. When it's closed, you're scared of what might be hiding in your room. When it's open, you're scared of what might be hiding in the hallway and your room.
Also, if you have the light off, it can sometimes be less scary, since it is harder to notice shadows when the whole room is somewhat dark, and you fall asleep quicker with the light off. It probably doesn't apply for someone that is already scared, though.

Over controlling children is what causes them to rebel, forcing nonsensical rules onto them is what pushes them to find ways around rules.
